aka "mutant disco." I was just thinking about this genre LAST NIGHT. Get outta my head, dude!

Kind of Bush of Ghosts-y.

Ursula1000:

^oh totally!

Mr Fab:

U1K: Ha!
Yep geezerette, The Heads/Eno/Tom Tom Club axis were def the biggest, most influential punk-funksters.

Martinibomb:

I wanna play bass in Delta V
Avatar 2:09pm
Ursula1000:

I believe they had 2 bass players---one playing the higher register stuff and the other the low end--so unique!
Avatar 2:10pm
Mr Fab:

I compiled a collection of NYC punk-funk called "Down By Law" that i put up on my old blog Music For Maniacs a few years back. Still sounds great, probably cuz it's kind of forgotten, so doesn't sound so played out. I haven't heard many contemporary groups do this kind of thing. No one plays horn or percussion anymore?
Avatar 2:10pm
geezerette:

Haha,you guys are amazing. :D
Avatar 2:11pm
Ursula1000:

yeah even w the whole LCD Soundsystem era of groups were riffing off of James Chance etc--none of them incorporated a ton of percussion or horns---I really love that mixture
Avatar 2:12pm
geezerette:

James Brown influence.
Avatar 2:13pm
Ursula1000:

Looking at that blog Mr Fab--some nice selections! Some are about to appear later in this show! haha
  2:14pm
Martinibomb:

I never get tired of hearing this era of music
Avatar 2:15pm
Mr Fab:

Right on! Looks like the link is still working. As i wrote back then: "Never has "dance" music been so dark, noisy, and experimental. Unlike the earlier sexy funk of James Brown et al, this stuff is uptight, tense, full of punk's nervous energy. And if the disco they were playing uptown at Studio 54 was slick and glamorous, this music was low-budget, as dirty as a SoHo street corner."
  2:15pm
Domenic:

Trying not to dance too much here at work! Wow 80's stuff I've never heard of!
Avatar 2:17pm
Ursula1000:

I love Haircut 100 but they were like the slick version of this stuff---love how loose it is---and anxious!
Avatar 2:19pm
geezerette:

Spectacular set!
Avatar 2:19pm
Ursula1000:

cheers!
Avatar 2:22pm
Mr Fab:

Did not occur to me about Haircut 100, but yeah, they did have the Latin rhythm thing going on. Send 'em to a gritty city setting, feed 'em drugs, keep 'em up way too late, they might sound like these guys.
  2:22pm
Martinibomb:

gaa been trying to practice bass more often but really need to get my arse in gear
  2:22pm
Martinibomb:

One of my fave tracks from ACR
Avatar 2:23pm
Ursula1000:

I can see Howard Moon of Mighty Boosh doing some thumb slapping bass on this!

Martinibomb:

I'm literally adjusting the action on my bass right now heh just need an allen for the old truss rod
Avatar 2:31pm
Ursula1000:

haha happy to plant the seed! My daughter is taking bass lessons at School Of Rock here in Brooklyn and she just got a cool small scale Ibanez purple bass.
  2:33pm
Martinibomb:

A friend used to have one of those tiny mustang basses I assume it's like that? Cool bass
Avatar 2:33pm
Mr Fab:

the story of 99 Records lawsuit against Sugerhill/Melle Mel re: "Cavern"/"White Lines" is quite horrible.
Avatar 2:33pm
Ursula1000:

I have a Mustang and that's small scale but for adults---this one's called a Mikro--a little smaller
Avatar 2:34pm
Ursula1000:

I don't know the full story of that Mr Fab---did LL not finally get credit?
  2:36pm
Martinibomb:

Hah it's even smaller I suppose a Mustang would be too heavy so they probably make this out of light weight materials
Avatar 2:37pm
Mr Fab:

As I recall, it dragged on for 5 years, til Sugar Hill weaseled out of it by declaring bankruptcy and dissolving the label. The guy from 99 Records was so burnt he quite music and moved to Europe. Don't know if Liquid Liquid ever got a dime. Ah, the music biz!
Avatar 2:37pm
Ursula1000:

yeah--check it out Ibanez GSRM20--it's pretty sweet
  2:37pm
Martinibomb:

I hope they teach her about chords I think that's important with bass and folks sometimes skip learning them
Avatar 2:38pm
Ursula1000:

aw man that story blows Fab
  2:38pm
Martinibomb:

omg that bass is sooo cute!
Avatar 2:41pm
Mr Fab:

The Robinsons of Sugar Hill were working with the notorious Mo Levy, who would send his goons around to 99 Records to intimidate 'em. Talk about "gangsta."
Avatar 2:43pm
Ursula1000:

that's so unfortunate---99 was an amazing label
  2:47pm
Martinibomb:

I don't think I've had the pleasure of listening to Crime before the heavy blues progression is interesting in this music
Avatar 2:48pm
Ursula1000:

this track is kinda like a one off from them--but their other stuff is awesome
Avatar 2:51pm
Mr Fab:

I was wondering if it's the same 'Crime' as the great San Fran punk band?
Avatar 2:52pm
Ursula1000:

yep same guys
  2:56pm
Martinibomb:

I put a huge pile of post punk in my wife's car and by far Delta 5 - Mind your own business was her fave. I'd say Delta 5 in general rose to the top for her and her friends
Avatar 2:57pm
Ursula1000:

their track "You" is pretty amazing!
