I thought Jesse had gone soft, saw it was Marcel and now preparing for the fury most likely coming once we're all vulnerable.
Quite nice really.
  12:38am rw:

Ha! Aitch, I was thinking we were still listening to Jesse's show too! Checked the playlist because this track didn't seem typical Jarnow fare.

Howdy kids.

what do the neighbors think?
Avatar 12:53am Marcel M:

I do wonder what the USPS people think when they are loading trucks and I have the door open to smoke.
Avatar 12:55am coelacanth∅))):

those Fucking weirdos at wfmu! these people actually send them money?!
  12:55am rw:

Ha! They probably wish they were doing a radio show and having a smoke instead.
Avatar 12:58am Marcel M:

Hah. I don't think they know what it is. Most people around here have no idea.
Avatar 12:59am coelacanth∅))):

well, i will say, my brief moment of experience with them on the loading dock when i brought a pile of packages to drop off, was a pleasant one. friendly guys. (even knowing that the packages came from fmu!)
  1:00am rw:

Years ago I had a talk with my mail carrier. She knew a heck of a lot about the neighborhood.
  1:03am BH:

considering the standards one could have about diners, how bad would it have to be to be "not good"
Avatar 1:05am coelacanth∅))):

rw yeah they do. of course they can be thrown off -like by me getting extreme "right-wing" propaganda mailings!
  1:06am rw:

coel, Keep 'em guessing!
  1:07am rw:

You haven't been forwarding those mailings to my mom have you?
Avatar 1:07am Marcel M:

Well these are like ... people in big trucks loading stuff in. Not like, walking around the hood all day.
Avatar 1:08am Marcel M:

I'm sure the local carrier knows what it is.
Avatar 1:09am coelacanth∅))):

BH a good diner has not great but decent food. some diners don't even have that!
...nd the diners in my area are more expensive than restaurants that aren't called diners, and they generally suck.
i always thought a "diner" was by definition inexpensive, but not so.
Avatar 1:10am coelacanth∅))):

rw yeah that's kinda my point! i've recently met others too who do the same thing -just to fuck with the statistics and therefore the expectations come election time.
Avatar 1:13am coelacanth∅))):

haha -not that i'm pro-democrat either! they usually all suck, unfortunately -whatever they call themselves.
Avatar 1:13am Marcel M:

The rare diner does have truly good food. But usually famous and packed. Like Tops in NJ
Avatar 1:13am Marcel M:

But to me a decent diner is great. If they can fry eggs okay and the hash browns are fine i'm in.
Avatar 1:13am Marcel M:

But I grew up in NJ. So thats how it goes!
Avatar 1:16am coelacanth∅))):

when i first entered "the work force" i went to the cranford diner regularly. 99¢ 2 eggs, home fries, toast. they got us on the $2. coffees but still! food was good. then the prices went up; quality went down. prices went up some more...
  1:19am rw:

I drove past my favorite diner around here recently and it had been torn down. Old school with the tufted vinyl booths, oversized portions, waitresses that call you "hon", crawling with old people. They turned it into a McDonalds.
Avatar 1:19am coelacanth∅))):

i have a whole list (in my head) of nj diners that were really good, then not.
kenilworth; echo diner on 22; rustic mill...there was one in roselle park that seemed to be remaining good. last time there is over 18 years ago. "midas touch"?
Avatar 1:20am coelacanth∅))):

oh that's sad rw. fuck mcdonalds.
  1:21am rw:

Really sad.
Avatar 1:22am coelacanth∅))):

there was one in westfield nj that was an old railroad car, with all the chrome adornments and such that happened i guess in the 50s? 40s? and some german guy with too much money bought it and removed the entire thing, sent it to germany.
prick.
Avatar 1:23am Marcel M:

I want diner food now
Avatar 1:23am Marcel M:

There is a train car type in Summit that is really great. Just breakfast I think and closes early.
Avatar 1:24am Marcel M:

I haven't been there in years though
Avatar 1:26am coelacanth∅))):

i remember the one in summit. not bad.
waitress never called me hon!
i worked in summit in the mid-late 90s.
  1:27am BH:

in my area, there was a trolley car sort of restaurant that was concentrating on sandwiches and soup.. and eventually that place moved and last I recall it's operating out of a library. The one time I went to a Waffle House, I didn't budget great and barely escaped with money in my wallet
  1:27am rw:

Marcel, I want diner food now too!!
Avatar 1:28am coelacanth∅))):

damn, i'm hungry!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:29am Ken From Hyde Park:

Confound it! I want an omelet with the works and hash browns and some toast!
  1:30am rw:

There's a rail car themed place out here called Formosa Cafe. VERY Hollywood, but cool nonetheless. Seems it's closed and reopened since the last time I was there!
  1:31am rw:

https://www.lamag.com/digestblog/formosa-cafe-open/
Avatar 1:31am coelacanth∅))):

BH i think waffles have become fashionable! it's astounding how much they charge for a cool-shaped slab of empty calories w/diabetes syrup and butter, when a regular round, flat slab of empty calories (w/same) is like a buck or 2.
Avatar 1:34am coelacanth∅))):

wow that place is beautiful!
Avatar 1:36am slugluv1313:

@ rw -- that sucks! as if McDonalds was not already the epitome of PURE EVIL!!!
and yeah, diners are *supposed* to be reasonably priced -- as coelacanthø))) noted, some diners have crappy food, are higher priced, and are stingier with their portions than "regular" restaurants (and yes! i remember the Echo Diner on Route 22 too! is it still there?)
near FMU, i found Rumi, the Turkish restaurant -- love their lentil soup (usually with this amazing bread, instead of the usual pita) -- lotsa veg/vegan options, huge portions (for me at least) and decent prices -- but, they close at 10pm
and yeah, now i'm hungry too!
  1:36am rw:

Haha! One of the photos shows Rodney Bingenheimer sitting in a booth.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:36am Aitch:

I'm 10,000 miles away and I want diner food. Also it's nearly dinner time. Most likely will end up with Vietnamese, but could so go a pastrami bagel.
Avatar 1:37am coelacanth∅))):

yes,Ken seriously! when i lived in nj many of the diners were owned by greeks and so the greece-influenced dishes were really good -like the tomato-feta omelette. even the spanikopita was decent; and it's not easy to find good spanikopita.
  1:39am BH:

all of the Waffle Houses in my vicinity are at Interstate exits, so it's a little out of the way.
Totally random: eating at a Denny's changed a bit (for the better, IMO) once my municipality banned smoking in restaurants.
Avatar 1:40am slugluv1313:

@ rw -- omg -- The Formosa is GORGEOUS!!!!!
Avatar 1:41am Marcel M:

I've only been to a Denny's once. Driving from Joshua Tree back to LA. Everything on my plate tasted the same and the 7 cups of coffee did nothing to help me stay awake.
Avatar 1:43am coelacanth∅))):

slugluv i haven't been down that way in a few years but i think it was still there 5-10 years ago. driving on the hellish rt.22 and didn't notice.
Avatar 1:44am Marcel M:

Hi Slugluv, Ken
  1:44am rw:

slugluv and coel, Right? I want to revisit the place. It's been decades!

Marcel, you've only been to Denny's ONCE? Are there no Denny's in NJ?
Avatar 1:45am coelacanth∅))):

never ate at a denny's but had friends who boycotted them because of several bigotry-motivated unpleasant encounters at a few of them. this was the late 90s. i don't know if denny's is up here where i live.
Avatar 1:46am slugluv1313:

@ Marcel -- same here, and agreed -- only time i had been to a Denny's was while traveling with the Sideshow many years ago -- in Maryland, i think -- i was not vegan yet, but still really slim pickings for veg food -- even their avocados tasted like cardboard
Avatar 1:47am coelacanth∅))):

hey shout out to sv!
<
Avatar 1:48am slugluv1313:

@ coelacanthø))) -- aghhhhh Route 22!!!!!! i grew up in NJ too, some of my behind-the-wheel driving instruction was on Route 22
  1:48am rw:

Denny's kind of blows, but they're open 24. I've had many drunk/stoned late teenage breakfasts after midnight there.

sv! Nice.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:48am Aitch:

sv an interesting dude
Avatar 1:49am coelacanth∅))):

oh no slugluv! that's a scary place to learn how to drive!
  1:50am rw:

We should all buy sv's digital album. It's only $1.
Avatar 1:50am coelacanth∅))):

rw that's where the echo diner came in handy. drunk after the club in plainfield (whatever it was called)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:52am Ken From Hyde Park:

I forget who said it, but I recall some comedian with a line "Nobody goes to Denny's on purpose."
  1:52am BH:

Denny's probably exists for the people travelling who don't know of better options in the area.
I think my boycott list right now is just Chick-Fil-A and Jimmy John's. And even if CFA changes their stripes, their location near me is sorta tough to get in and out of.
Avatar 1:54am coelacanth∅))):

it's on my wishlist, rw. this laptop wont let me sign into my bandcamp account with firefox, so i wait 'till a have a few things to check out and do it all at once with safari, which i normally don't use.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:54am Scяaps:

Probably people already said, but, Nowhere Places 12-3 Sunday/Monday morning
Avatar 1:54am slugluv1313:

@ rw -- as far as i know, i do not think there are Denny's in NJ
years ago, a co-worker in Manhattan was talking about one thing she loved about visiting her family for holidays was going to Denny's, i think she grew up near Pittsburgh
@ coelacantho -- right? the Somerville Circle too! and, i grew up in Martinsville -- some of the most winding, crazy roads ever -- and back then, not nearly as many signs, road barriers, guard rails, etc. as there are now
Avatar 1:56am coelacanth∅))):

martinsville. i confess i've never even heard of that town!
-somerset county?

Avatar 1:57am coelacanth∅))):

popeyes -another one i've never entered.
  1:58am curtis_chaos_la_la:

I got punched by Lydia Lunch in a church last year. Anyone want to hear the story? It's short:
I didnt know what to say to her after the performance, so I asked her to punch me. She thought about it for .5 of a second and hit me twice. Bloodied my lip. Then hugged me and made me feeeeel her strength..
Avatar 1:59am coelacanth∅))):

hahaha! she didn't have to punch your mouth!
Avatar 2:00am tak:

it was the mouth that said it
Avatar 2:00am Marcel M:

lol. that story makes a lot of sense, Curtis.
Avatar 2:02am slugluv1313:

@ coelacantho))) -- yup! Bridgewater Township -- when i was growing up there, way more rural (there was a farm behind my parents' home, roadside farm stands, plus we grew a lot of our own stuff) -- now it is all "suburban," with the McMansions and four SUVs in every driveway -- UGH
  2:03am rw:

curtis, Great story!!

curtis, that is freakin' awesome!
  2:04am ignatatus666:

Last time I was at a Denny’s that I frequently went to on the way home from Monticello ( located in Middletown), the waitress asked if I tried the new coke available only at Walmart? I said no and she handed me a cup with soda in it. I took a sip and stopped instantly. I said does this have alcohol in it and she smiled then laughed. I said yo
This isn’t fucking funny I’ve been sober for over 20 years! I never went back again.
  2:04am BH:

i'd probably never be seen near the KFC or Church's Chicken if the nearest Popeyes was closer than it is.

iggy i trust your judgement on that but i don't eat chicken!
and to be honest i just never have a desire to go to fastfood places. it's been a few decades.
Avatar 2:11am Marcel M:

I had that dastardly chicken sandwich the other day. DJ Jonathan Herweg literally brought me one while I was working. What a guy
Avatar 2:11am coelacanth∅))):

...that's not true! maybe i don't know whare the line is to call something "fast food"
i've had pizza; and been to a panera (sp?) bread in kingston a few times.

Avatar 2:15am coelacanth∅))):

  2:17am BH:

As for the line about fast food: guess it depends on if you can usually get it without leaving your car?
Avatar 2:18am coelacanth∅))):

but out your way was beautiful...looking!
i had a friend in branchburg who got beat up pretty bad by manville cops for looking like a "punk" and his '66 impala was severely damaged while impounded there.

NORMS Diners in LA are classics. Happy to share the LL story w folks who appreciate!. She was doing the free jazz poetry that nite and every word fit. Gonna hit up the church to see if a/v exists. My band obvi had xxtra strong rehearsal the following day! Wish I could go to the Roland S Howard thing coming up. My kind of gig.
Avatar 2:24am coelacanth∅))):

oh, yeah i've eaten subway food a bunch of time too!
but cool! -not fast food!
Avatar 2:27am slugluv1313:

@ coelacantho -- yes! North Plainfield (from what i recall) -- nice town!
and yeah, when i was a teenager (1970s) kids were ALWAYS getting pulled over if they had long hair, a car that was jacked up in the back, etc.
and the kkk being there would not surprise me AT ALL -- one of the many reasons i realized i had to get the fuck outta there by the time i was 10 or 11 years old -- yes, GORGEOUS land, trees, etc. (although that is rapidly disappearing too), but ugly, narrow-minded humans/attitudes
Avatar 2:27am coelacanth∅))):

slugluv, i went (a few times) to a celebration (solstice or something) in i think bedminster hosted by a group that was trying to preserve certain aspects of native american culture, though there was a lot of pagan-ness going on too. and some pyramid ritual.
... i worked at a store in scotch plains that sold a great selection of loose herbs and many of the relocated southern folk and the rastas that came in for home remedies lived in n plainfield.
my neighborhood was most hispanic. friendly and not busybodies. fiestas on summer weekends!

@ coelaanthø))) -- DEFINITELY way cooler than Martinsville!
i mean, when i was a little kid, we had a "block" party of sorts (the road i grew up on was a dead end!) and even if everyone did not agree on everything, everyone kinda looked out for each other -- this changed drastically in later years, my parents really grew to hate the snooty people moving in -- nosy, busy-body types, but could not be bothered if a neighbor was in trouble, did "not want to get involved" (if that makes any sense!)
have a great night!
