A viking ship appears on the horizon, a likeness of Loretta Lynn carved into its bow. Rare birds flock together to sing Francoise Hardy as soul hits. A sunset of blips and bleeps fills the air.

i'm here for the visual part. somebody?
  11:22am ignatatus666:

@Coel that’s funny. I imagine your parents were not into music and were happy with whatever is on the radio. We were lucky our Dad was into a variety of non popular music.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:24am sphere:

My mom was into a station that alternated swinging pop vocals with 70s lite pop. I don't know how I got out of it alive.
Avatar 11:24am ben abs:

This is a weird one - the sets a grower for sure, feel like there's some cringe moments, but overall great vibe
  11:26am yippie:

what about purgatory?

Ya mean "limbo'?

Limbo the Bimbo
Avatar 11:29am βrian:

Can you limbo in bardo?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:31am Phillippe Bastille:

@sphere lol, what station was that? You were still in MVA back then, right? My parents were mostly WCAO and WBAL on the AM dial, occasionally WLIF when they decided to get risky and wander over to the FM dial.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:32am sphere:

@ Phillippe - That was WMAL.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:33am Phillippe Bastille:

Ah. The MAL was short for malady...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:34am sphere:

Appropriately enough, it's now a right-wing shouter station.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:35am SSS:

Trouble, had it all my days...believe Trouble gonna carry my blues away...Hey, bit of a lyric change for this moment.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:37am Phillippe Bastille:

Isn't it amazing that the nation's capital has one of the most pathetic radio scenes in the country? Maybe "amazing" isn't the right word. How about "troubling"? Been that way for decades
Avatar 11:38am coelacanth∅))):

Iggy (@1122) no! my father especially loved music. mother liked music - but also wanted quiet.
i was fortunately raised singing along with with melody, harmony, rhythm and relevant lyrics; but by the time 1976 rolled around my father was listening to schmaltzy radio, 101 strings and shit. occasionally singing along in a deep bass.
...then he had his pop-country phase...
Avatar 11:39am coelacanth∅))):

...and by 1976 (when oxygene came out) they'd given up on me - and my musical taste.
Avatar 11:40am βrian:

What, no goat alarm?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:40am sphere:

@ Phillippe - Too true.
Avatar 11:41am coelacanth∅))):

Thanks gonthier!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:41am Phillippe Bastille:

My folks didn't get my musical tastes beyond age 14. Quite honestly, I have no one in my life that shares my musical tastes, except for you fine folks
  11:41am Craig:

This music is making me feel so good French music is so sexy
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:41am Carmichael:

My parents listened to Mitch Miller, Tijuana Brass, and Bill Cosby records. My dad grew up playing dixieland jazz piano in bars.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:42am ParUbi:

My parents were both into classical, though my mother would make allowances for the early Beatles
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:43am Carmichael:

Last night I took a deep dive into Stereolab, talking 'bout French music.
Avatar 11:43am coelacanth∅))):

we definitely had Mitch Miller, Herb Alpert and Bill Cosby records in the house!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:45am Phillippe Bastille:

@Craig. I watched the film "A Simple Favor" last night and was pleasantly surprised by the amount of fabulous French tunes in it. Movie is worth a look, the soundtrack worth a listen
Avatar 11:46am coelacanth∅))):

but i was weened off a mary poppins soundtrack and a Danny Kaye record with Peter Paul & Mary, the kingston trio and Harry Belafonte; then meet the beatles. i also loved his Benny Goodman record
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:47am sphere:

I was a teenage Chicago fan until Chain of Fools blew my mind.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:47am Phillippe Bastille:

My dad was particularly fond of Billy Vaughn
Avatar 11:49am coelacanth∅))):

ParUbi my father at one point decided i might be receptive and gave me 2 records: the student prince; and Vivaldi's concertos.
i didn't hear him play classical a lot though.

i still like those albums

I grew up within a classical household, oldest sister a piano performance major. In high school, I was deep into the dollar bin blues and jazz ofthe '20 - '40s. Only a bit aware of the popular things.

Phillippe i don't know at what age my parents didn't get my tastes. i started listening to steppenwolf and the 'stones when i was around 7-8; then Hendrix, which they hated... but they didn't give up for a while yet
Avatar 11:53am coelacanth∅))):

SSS i'd appreciate if i had a bit more exposure along those lines
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:53am SSS:

But, later, developed, with friends, what was essentially a musical incubator, the most well known to come out of it was Brian Setzer. The Little Green Building Down By The Tracks was a real thing.

Of the Stray Cats. Massapequa was HAPPENIN'!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:54am Phillippe Bastille:

@coelacanth for me the line was drawn when I stopped spending my allowance and birthday money on Hot Wheels and baseball cards and started spending it on records. I was kind of immature as a kid, not like I am now ;)
