Next stop ... The twilight zone.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:03pm Phillippe Bastille:

Gotta admit this Marsalis is a bit jarring after Mary's 3OAK of Sister Europe.

I came for the Stormville flea market art of the day
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:04pm Lunchbox (From DC/AUS):

hey everyone!
  3:04pm Listener Robert:

I'm trying to pick apart the symbolism on the playlist page. Is that dithering, fingerprints, or a moire pattern? And, though I remember the episode, I can't recall whether it was Twilight Zone, Outer Limits, or Alfred Hitchcock Presents. And then I'm trying to tie it in with the Hong Kong situation.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:05pm Phillippe Bastille:

I think it's printed on the side of a football
  3:05pm Listener Robert:

OK, is someone NAMED Willoughby tied up in the Hong Kong protests?

Damn, I have so much practice with allusion-piercing from "Lost", yet it eludes me here.
  3:06pm berbo:

Twilight Zone

Brian, it IS a train depot sign, for a stop only this guy could perceive.

LET'S DANCE!!!
  3:15pm Listener Robert:

I mean, it's only within the past week that I realized the allusions "Lost" made to "Strangers on a Train", which adds weight to the hypothesis that the pipeline-to-Alvar-Hanso (phony survivors) and bogus bloodline scams were separate ones whose perpetrators came together on for mutual advantage and to deflect suspicion.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:21pm queems:

this is better than the original
Avatar 3:22pm Irwin:

I love this version. I hear "Porganmaise."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:22pm Alison Porchnik:

It's a pork-based condiment.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:22pm queems:

tbh the lyrics in this song are kind of inconsequential. this version is so mysterious!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:23pm adampsyche:

this is a nice song

Avatar 3:55pm Irwin:

What's wrong with both Knees?
  3:58pm berbo:

I missed Bent Knee in Milwaukee this summer. They are just as amazing live.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:59pm Phillippe Bastille:

@queems that's why I like cats better than dogs. Unfortunately our house has four dogs and no cats. Apparently we have more ghosts than cats. Not a lot of places can say that.

I just played Almost Cut My Hair on my show Aural Medication on RadioFreeBrooklyn.org...last Friday. what a ko-in-kee-dink
  4:23pm rina:

I like it

  4:23pm Larry O:

David Crosby lived in Springfield for a few weeks years ago, at the rehab center on Morris Turnpike.
  4:23pm rina:

so mean
Avatar 4:24pm coelacanth∅))):

i guess a lot of people don't understand that song -that it's a metaphor and that it's about society prejudices and "government" control.
absolutely Brilliant song!

Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:34pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...nothing Roger McGuinn didn't know in an instant in 1964...
  4:35pm Beetlemuse:

maybe so musicians seem to make better actors, but actors never make good musicians :(
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:37pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Bowie - Actor. Jagger - always Jagger...
Avatar 4:37pm Irwin:

Tom Waits does both terrifically.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:38pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Put a bunch of Waits in iPod to shuffle thru
...like - 400+ tracks! Beatles was ~200...
Avatar 4:39pm Irwin:

Waits outlasted the Fab 4, and outlived two of 'em.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:39pm Carmichael:

You mean Steve Allen wasn't a great jazz pianist? He sure thought he was ...
Avatar 4:40pm Irwin:

I doubt Steve Allen thought of himself as a "great jazz pianist." He knew true jazz genius, acknowledged it, featured it, celebrated it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:41pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Digs Steverino.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:42pm Carmichael:

Maybe it just came off that way, to me.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:44pm Mr. Pumpy:

Vijay Iyer...nice! Hit's the spot after messing with my boiler...and realizing it's not broken. Dodged that bullet. Thanks for the tunes, Irwin.
Avatar 4:45pm Fredericks:

Vijay has an amazing drummer behind him.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:45pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Maybe like a lot of rillly smart babies - Allen was opinionated about some stuff.
He goofed on RawkaRolla a good bit - like a lot of old skool Jazzbos...
But he had on Elvis, Tim Buckley, Blue Cheer !!...& not everybody did that...
& - he was perfect accompanist on those Kerouac tracks - & it takes some taste & smarts to do that for a Reader...
Avatar 4:47pm coelacanth∅))):

it is harder to be a good musician than a good actor, so
@4.35 yeah, makes sense
of course there are exceptions
  4:48pm Dave Miss:

Good show IC
Avatar 4:49pm Irwin:

There's tons of old kinescopes and video captures of Allen presenting some of the coolest figures in jazz on his various TV shows. He was a champion of great jazz.
  4:50pm Beetlemuse:

does Irwin play any instruments? or tried to? Just curious
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:52pm Carmichael:

Whoa, nice take on A Young Man is Gone.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:52pm Carmichael:

Irwin's an old school drummer, jazz cigarettes and all.
Avatar 4:52pm coelacanth∅))):

speaking of messing with boilers (indirectly) if you basically know how to install a thermostat but run into a problem don't expect any help from the people at honeywell.
...friendly, but ignorant.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:52pm Carmichael:

HA HA
Avatar 4:53pm Fredericks:

Irwin plays the drums very well, Beetlemuse.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:53pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Think of drummer John Densmore of the doors in autobio saying 1st thing acting coach said was cut yer hair: Musicians hide - Actors show... Different skills...
Mucho impressive BBoys impersonation.
Avatar 4:53pm Irwin:

I'm not a musician. I play drums.
  4:53pm Santos L Halper:

When are you and Dennis D going to do another BB geekout show? I finally finished listening to the first one just recently, was great.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:53pm Mr. Pumpy:

Damn...he died the day they dropped all the SMILE tracks?! The humanity!!!
  4:54pm tak:

loving this new k&a intro song
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:55pm Mr. Pumpy:

@coelacanth∅)))...I'm good on the thermostat front. Thanks for the info though. This is the boiler for my tenants' unit, and it's old and cranky and a constant source of stress for me. Such is life.
  4:55pm Beetlemuse:

thanks that is cool they are a a fun instrument. had a set for a few years.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:56pm Carmichael:

Brian loved (loves) his Four Freshmen.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:58pm queems:

i love the books SO MUCH
Avatar 4:58pm Irwin:

The first time I heard the 4Freshman I was stunned by the harmonic similarity to the BBs.
Avatar 4:59pm Fredericks:

Wasn't Stan Kenton appreciative of the Beach Boys harmonies?
Avatar 5:00pm coelacanth∅))):

Mr.P i'll just say, when you get a replacement thermostat make sure the wires correspond right away, even if you're not going to use it right away - so you can return it if they don't.
this programmable one has no "Rc" and the instructions show no "Rc" in the diagram and says if my old one has both "Rc" & "R:" then i cannot use the new one...yet the woman on the phone said it must be defective because they all have that wire connection.
obviously not true.

if you're not familiar with Joanna Newsom you might be put off by her voice at first, but at least listen to the lyrics. it's a story.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:19pm Phillippe Bastille:

@coel and Mr P thanks for the unexpectedly useful info on thermostats. One is somewhere between the Home Depot warehouse and our front steps as I type.
Avatar 5:21pm coelacanth∅))):

cool Phillippe how fortuitous!

A pleasure in musicland, as always, Irwin. Coming home from a road trip through my past/future.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:43pm Mr. Pumpy:

@ Phillippe...no problem. I din't mean to turn this into an episode of This Old House! I've changed a few thermostats out up in my place in the Catskills, but that was before all the smart products. I will say though, to coelacanth∅)))'s point...you ust always make sure the wires match. Even with the old-school stuff...heat/electricity is nothing to mess with casually. Also, thanks coelacanth∅)))...sorry you had to go through that rigmarole.

Avatar 5:49pm Irwin:

The only part of the suite I don't like: Giles' drums in the closing passages. Overplayed, clunky.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:50pm Mr. Pumpy:

McDonald and Giles...awesome! And that the lyrics are done by Peter Sinfield! There are other King Crimson crossover elements, apparently, now that I'm reading about it. For all of my KC geekhood, this one got by me. I'll have to check the whole thing out. Once again, thanks, Irwin!
  5:50pm Peter from Dover NJ:

Irwin, thank you so much for playing this. A wonderful album.
  5:51pm Peter from Dover NJ:

Mr. Pumpy, if you dont have it, look for the Brondesbury Tapes by Giles Giles and Fripp.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:54pm Michael 98145:
