Options November 17, 2019: Keeps them out in front... this Friendly Stimulation

Welcoming 3 Sheena Stream DJs this week on the show. Don-O flashes back to his 14-year old self in music, Georgy Girl slices out a segment of High Waisted Modernists and Jan Turkenburg presents Dutch versions of songs you may know and... love.

Plus, we have Frank M. Young presenting a couple of rockin' numbers and Archivist Viv showcasing the music of Shae Tull.

Top it off with the 3rd installment of SOB's 2005 cross country travelogue adventures by train served with a side of vintage 1986 Subgenius rants delivered by Krys O.

And oh, for dessert, slices of new and old cuts in the usual freezeform mix variety.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:23pm Jan Turkenburg:

Hi Chresti!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:25pm fred:

I don't even remember when I turned 35. Too long ago
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:26pm Jan Turkenburg:

I remember I was still very young ... :-)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:27pm Jan Turkenburg:

What was left of my hair was still black...
Avatar 4:32pm Franco Twinkie:

Otis, I have a picture of myself the day I turned 35. I was on a ladder painting a big pile of wrecked cars in junkyard. Those were the days!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:33pm Otis Fodder:

Even myself, just 15 years back at 35, I have photos (real one) developed. I often miss developed photos, should get back into that again. Digital great and all, but I would like to have more polaroids and pics on my fridge.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:34pm Otis Fodder:

That sounds like a great photo Franco!
Avatar 4:37pm Franco Twinkie:

When I think about what I was doing at 35, and of course never giving a second thought, it makes me want to take a nap.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:39pm Otis Fodder:

Ha, at this moment in my life ... I'll always substitute adventures for naps!
Avatar 4:41pm Franco Twinkie:

Shit, to be 50 again! Never mind.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:41pm Linda Lee:

my 35: 1985. it was glorious. better than my younger years for sure.
Avatar 4:42pm Franco Twinkie:

Linda Lee, Me too! Are you on Medicare yet?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:43pm Otis Fodder:

Every decade is better (in the mind) and well, body, meh, there it goes right, right? Feel great at 50 in the mind. Does anybody really ever want to go back to being 20? Count me out.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:43pm Linda Lee:

no, i'm not. age 65, isn't it?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:44pm ParUbi:

I keep getting pulled away. I'll just listen to this in the archives!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:45pm Linda Lee:

that was a typo. i was 35 in 95, not 85! :-)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:45pm fred:

For some reason former girlfriends stole all pics of me from my twenties and earlier. To my single digit years. So I have no pics from before adulthood
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:45pm Otis Fodder:

LL, I'd dig ya if you were 35 in 35!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:46pm Linda Lee:

thank you sweetheart. same here! :-)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:47pm Otis Fodder:

Fred, I think about that often and the number of photos that have gone lost. I was lucky recently to borrow a photo album from 12 years ago and going to scan those photos in... but wish I had a ton of 80s and 90s photos still. Thankfully I have a ton of 70s photos from parents as I'm on a mission where I am slowly scanning and documenting them all.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:48pm Linda Lee:

that's a great project, Otis! & less time consuming that digitizing vinyl & tape.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:49pm Otis Fodder:

... and doing that now too, so slowly, but in free time. Mix tapes and other personal recorded media. Figure I'll post all the audio online in time and for photos, to share with family (nephews, etc) to look at in the future when I'm dust.
Avatar 4:50pm Franco Twinkie:

Well, I was having at blast at 20. Skinny as a rail, sleeping on the beach, sleeping on the side of the road, running around and having fun in the great outdoors.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:51pm Otis Fodder:

20 was fun totally... but too crazy. I think about it now and think, oh god, I'm going to lie down on the couch and nap. Ha. Happy memories though. I had a mobile DJ biz and was playing clubs in the SF bay area at 18 in 1987.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:51pm Linda Lee:

old personal photos are always compelling to me, even if i don't know the subjects.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:52pm fred:

I think they liked the idea of young me more than than what I turned out to be. Can't blame them. They did have a clue
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:52pm Otis Fodder:

Yes, love found photos in that regard.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:56pm Linda Lee:

i love the ambient sounds too. an environment for the voice.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:56pm Otis Fodder:

I may have Franco, but can't recall. I was mostly over on Broadway at a club Palladium in 87', right after that it was City Nights. Used to have a spot at a club in Castro Valley that started in '88 called Muggs (headed up a male chip strip show but had to stay behind the dj booth as I was under 21.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:01pm ParUbi:

Makes me want to randomly carry my Zoom h2 around.
Avatar 5:01pm geezerette:

Otis, good! I've been lucky to know several, brilliant, funny, passionate people in their nineties who seemed ageless to me. Learned a lot from them, enjoyed their company enormously.
Extraordinary role models.

Loving the travelogue. :D
Avatar 5:02pm Franco Twinkie:

Hunts was on the corner of 20th and Mission. Open 24hrs and attracted the most insane and potentially dangerous people in the city. Always top shelve entertainment. Chaos and glazed donuts.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:03pm Otis Fodder:

Thanks geez, and yes, what's that bit about growing old and knowing next to nothing... well something but always learning more and more in the mind and body.

Yes, these recordings are great. SOB (Diane) is one funny cool gem of a person.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:03pm Granny Spicy Tuna (they/them):

i've been looking forward to my 50s all the way through the awkward and annoying 40s. I saw all my older friends really hitting a peak era in their 50s. Wouldn't go back to any age before my first Saturn return for anything.
5:04pm Kat in Chicago in the app:

Been too busy today to chat (starting a temp job tomorrow) but wanted to say that it’s really fun to hear SOB in Chicago!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:04pm Otis Fodder:

I don't remember ever going Franco, but god... Donuts at 20, that's as important as booze and dates at 20!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:05pm Otis Fodder:

Hi Kat. Congrats on the new job, hope it goes well. Yay for Chicago!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:05pm Linda Lee:

friends who've lived on both coasts do seem to feel more at home on one or the other. they are very different.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:05pm Granny Spicy Tuna (they/them):

after six months on the east coast, i went scurrying back to the west one
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:06pm Otis Fodder:

Was west coast born and raised until age 36 in 2006... Moved to Toronto and now Montreal... and love the east. Big fan of both, esp, upper parts.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:06pm Granny Spicy Tuna (they/them):

this travelogue is so excellent
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:07pm Otis Fodder:

... and we have more coming up too. Will be 5 parts in total, more next week and the week after.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:08pm Linda Lee:

just about the opposite here, Granny! after traveling from new york city, south to new orleans & across to new mexico, then into mexico an and up the west coast to san francisco, i came back east with precisely 25 cents on hand. had to be back.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:09pm Granny Spicy Tuna (they/them):

LL: you're originally from nyc, yes?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:10pm Linda Lee:

yes, i was born there! :-)
what about you?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:10pm Granny Spicy Tuna (they/them):

i was born near santa cruz, ca but within weeks my parents moved us back to KANSAS, where i lived until shortly before my 5th birthday
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:11pm Linda Lee:

i remember hearing a bit about Kansas from you!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:11pm Granny Spicy Tuna (they/them):

then mostly PNW, along the I5 and Amtrack lines
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:11pm Granny Spicy Tuna (they/them):

my wild mama liked to take spontaneous train trips :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:12pm Linda Lee:

beautifuil! i did too, for a while there. :-)
Avatar 5:12pm Franco Twinkie:

Exactly where, Granny?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:14pm chresti:

I was 35 in 95, too! @LL
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:15pm Linda Lee:

ho! two friends of mine just visited the good reverend at the Full Gospel Tabernacle in Memphis! still singing!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:15pm Linda Lee:

how were your 30s, chresti?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:16pm Granny Spicy Tuna (they/them):

Franco Twinkie: where what? Watsonville, Lawrence, Bellevue, Tacoma, Vashon Island, Longview, Eugene, Astoria, Enumclaw, Kelso, mostly for living. Train trips to San Francisco!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:17pm chresti:

No, actually..I was 38..I think
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:18pm Granny Spicy Tuna (they/them):

also Topeka, Wichita, Emporia, Salt Lake City, Brownsville, almost Santa Rosa. All of this before college. Most of it before high school.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:18pm Linda Lee:

born in 57?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:19pm Linda Lee:

this is amazing, Granny!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:19pm Granny Spicy Tuna (they/them):

i've now been (mostly) in SF for 31 years!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:20pm Granny Spicy Tuna (they/them):

LL: my mama was a ramblin' gal for sure. <3
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:20pm Granny Spicy Tuna (they/them):

When i went to SF for college, my mama finally moved back to Santa Cruz until her death.
Avatar 5:21pm Franco Twinkie:

Watsonville is the answer! The Mexican food in Santa Cruz left something to be desired in the mid 70's, so we would drive down to Watsonville or Freedom. Less hippies, more Mexicans, no bean sprouts in your burrito!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:22pm Linda Lee:

was she from Santa Cruz originally, Granny?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:22pm Granny Spicy Tuna (they/them):

Watsonville is still the place to get the good Mexican food. YEAH. My parents actually lived in Freedom, down road a stretch.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:22pm ParUbi:

I spent my childhood in the LA area myself, and definitely gravitated eastward from there.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:23pm chresti:

Yeah, 57, my 30s were great, to have that energy..
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:23pm Granny Spicy Tuna (they/them):

LL: my mama was born in Hollywood, grew up near the Farmer's Market and then Santa Monica, back when it was the bad side of town (1940s).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:25pm Granny Spicy Tuna (they/them):

My girlfriend was born in 1958, upstate NY. Lived a mile from where the Woodstock Festival happened.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:25pm Linda Lee:

@chresti ~ yes, 30s energy, not so frenetic, but still bountiful. :-)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:26pm Linda Lee:

@Granny ~ your mother was a west coast lady for sure! <3
i'm about 30 miles from Bethel at the moment!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:27pm Linda Lee:

i'm guessing she was in Bethel.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:28pm Granny Spicy Tuna (they/them):

LL: my mama went to Barnard in 1961, when Erica Jong and Martha Stewart were students! But before the year was out, her parents slapped her into a mental institution. In KANSAS.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:28pm Linda Lee:

oh no.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:29pm Linda Lee:

i'm sorry for her.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:32pm Granny Spicy Tuna (they/them):

well, she met my papa there!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:32pm Linda Lee:

really!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:32pm Granny Spicy Tuna (they/them):

yes!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:33pm Linda Lee:

that's got to be an amazing love story. :-)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:34pm Granny Spicy Tuna (they/them):

they really loved each other. i feel very blessed by that,
Avatar 5:34pm geezerette:

GST, OMG! HHope they were happy! Glad you happened!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:34pm Linda Lee:

you were blessed for sure!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:35pm Granny Spicy Tuna (they/them):

geezerette!!! they had a good run for 7 years until the (ahem!) shotgun wedding in 1969. :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:35pm ParUbi:

that's an amazing story! you should write about that! did you write about that?
Avatar 5:36pm geezerette:

Hey, LL!
Chresti!
Franco!
Fred!
All!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:36pm Linda Lee:

geezerette! :-)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:36pm Granny Spicy Tuna (they/them):

ParUbi: thank you, i've been asked that many times, and i still am not sure how to write about it other than in these sort of conversational sharing sort of ways
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:37pm chresti:

Hi geez!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:37pm ParUbi:

well, it's good to have these in the archives so you can cut and paste them into some kind of record
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:38pm Granny Spicy Tuna (they/them):

DUKES!!!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:40pm Linda Lee:

it's not easy to write a true story from second hand memory of casual conversations. you need to be able to ask questions of the people you're writing about to make their stories come alive .. unless you're into writing fiction!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:40pm ParUbi:

this is great-- new to me! an XTC side project?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:41pm Linda Lee:

i once asked my mother to write her own story for me ~ but because she was not actually a writer, what she wrote is a letter.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:41pm Linda Lee:

not interesting reading for anyone else.
Avatar 5:42pm geezerette:

Otis, lovely show,thanks!

DOS sound like Beachboys! :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:42pm Granny Spicy Tuna (they/them):

LL: everyone i could talk to has crossed over, alas
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:43pm Linda Lee:

i thought that might be true. :-(
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:43pm Granny Spicy Tuna (they/them):

geezerette: do you know the Dukes? Look into their story and be surprised!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:44pm Granny Spicy Tuna (they/them):

SLACK ON
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:44pm Otis Fodder:

Love the Dukes ... and SLACK!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:45pm ParUbi:

Avatar 5:47pm geezerette:

GST, thanks, I will!

5:48pm Dave in St Albans UK:

Thank you Otis for another good one. Must go but looking forward to next week's FP.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:50pm Granny Spicy Tuna (they/them):

Otis, you're getting us all riled up and rowdy here.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:51pm ParUbi:

Have you seen "Wax, or the Discovery of Television Among the Bees?"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:52pm Linda Lee:

amazing to hear Sister Krys. :-)
Avatar 5:53pm geezerette:

Parubi, that sounds hilarious!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:53pm Granny Spicy Tuna (they/them):

Thanks for two tons of fun, Otis! Thanks to all the accufreakshow folx for an entertaining afternoon.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:53pm ParUbi:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:54pm Granny Spicy Tuna (they/them):

Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:55pm Linda Lee:

beautiful show, Otis! lovely! thank you dear!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:56pm Linda Lee:

what a shame we lose our comments board when Sheena takes over. :-)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:56pm chresti:

Thanks Otis, fantastic!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:56pm Granny Spicy Tuna (they/them):

every time i hear Kevin Ayers i wonder why i do not listen obsessively all the time
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:57pm Otis Fodder:

Have a great Sunday evening everyone. Off to have a nice supper here.

Granny - My god yes, same feeling here. Need to dig into more of his solo catalog. Always hits the right mental spots.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:57pm Granny Spicy Tuna (they/them):

LL: esp since some of the main stream DJs aren't so fond of us off-topic chatters! :P
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:58pm Otis Fodder:

I ***love*** off-topic. Please go way out here. Furthers conversations AND connections. Hugs to that all!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:58pm Linda Lee:

i'd say not. :-D
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:58pm Granny Spicy Tuna (they/them):

OTIS YOU RULE!!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:59pm Linda Lee:

yes you do!!!!! xxxx
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:59pm Otis Fodder:

My state of mind and position on off-topic conversations are as serious as the lyrics in this Ayers song. Ha!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:00pm Linda Lee:

here's a question: what's 'off topic' with freeform?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:00pm Granny Spicy Tuna (they/them):

mmm, ask one of those cranky DJs!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:01pm Otis Fodder:

Exactly... Freeform extends far past the microphone and lands smack dab on the playlist.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:01pm Linda Lee:

i'll just steer clear. :-D
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:01pm Otis Fodder:

Ah, we rule! Good times.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:02pm Linda Lee:

Beautiful. :-)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:03pm Granny Spicy Tuna (they/them):

group hug!!!! my parents were diagnosed schizos. What were they really??!?!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:03pm Otis Fodder:

Letting this last Rant play 2 or so minutes over, can't cut off Sister Krys. Sacrilege!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:04pm Otis Fodder:

Slade sang it best, "Mama Weer All Crazee Now"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:04pm Granny Spicy Tuna (they/them):

any way the wind blows…
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:05pm Otis Fodder:

Cheers all!
