Hello lost opera horses that are acting like soap
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:07pm Sam Segal:

In the manner of a Chresti! Welcome!
  9:12pm Dean:

I promise not to mention Steely Dan this week.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:15pm Sam Segal:

I want this to be a safe space for you, Dean! Dan or no Dan!
Avatar 9:16pm Hams:

this record's a knockout.
  9:20pm Chris Farrel:

Dean; academic question I thought of this week that I wanted your input on.
Is a story better to have a conclusive ending where there is a clear ending
Or is an open ending with no real conclusion more appealing?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:21pm Sam Segal:

Hams! Indeed, "Guitar" is a special one...especially love the whole Princess Sonata.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:22pm Sam Segal:

Chris, if I may weigh in, the best story has a
  9:25pm Dean:

My off the cuff response, Chris, due largely to the fact that I'm immersed in J. Hillis Miller's The Linguistic Moment, is that good literature never has a conclusive ending. By that I mean that the reader will never be able to conclude that "the moral of this story is" such-and-such. But I think you're referring specifically to the narrative trajectory itself: "and they all lived happily ever after" versus "and they wandered off into the sunset..." I don't think one or the other prevails.

Ask an academic question, get a pseudo-academic answer.
  9:26pm Chris Farrel:

Both parts of that were helpful. Thank you for your input.
  9:27pm Dean:

Some great works never conclude. See, e.g., Finnegan's Wake and Dhalgren.
Avatar 9:28pm Hams:

yeah, that version of "blind willie" is something else.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:29pm chresti:

I think it depends, if you want it to be made into a blockbuster movie, then definitely leave it hanging..
Haha Sam
  9:30pm Dean:

A *series* of blockbuster movies!
  9:31pm Chris Farrel:

I can understand that. I relate my writing abilities to a scene in the Royal Tenebaums where Richie Tenebaum is in a tennis match and he removes one of his shoes and “actually I think he’s crying”

But I came across several rousing ideas during my using days and could never put the puzzle together fully.
  9:32pm Chris Farrel:

A joke: I believe Blockbuster went out of business but Netflix is alive and well.
  9:35pm Dean:

On those rare occasions when I exhibit "writing abilities" I relate them to the last thing I just read. I'm pretty much a Zelig in that arena, not quite a copy-cat, but by no stretch an original.
  9:36pm Chris Farrel:

I can understand but originality is virtually impossible under some circumstances

And even then how can a person be sure.
  9:40pm Chris Farrel:

Nice set so far Sam.
  9:40pm Dean:

Of course. I don't mean "original" in absolute terms, but relatively speaking Dickinson is an original, like Wallace Stevens, Laurence Sterne, Rabelais, Mallarme...you know, literary oddballs whose eccentricities don't seem gratuitous or faked.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:42pm Sam Segal:

Thanks, Chris!
  9:42pm Dean:

I once flew into LFO from Denver on a layover.
  9:44pm Chris Farrel:

I don’t spit on the floor.
  9:46pm Chris Farrel:

Sam: when you were in Greece did you eat at any restaurants where it was custom to break your dishes on the floor what when done eating?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:46pm Sam Segal:

While it wasn't the custom anywhere I ate, I did do it anyway, Chris!
  9:47pm Chris Farrel:

Lmao. Time for Accounting goodnight to the chat.
  9:49pm Dean:

I once dined at a famous-ish restaurant in Long Beach/San Pedro, CA, a really fun Greek restaurant, Papadakis, where in fact they *did* routinely smash plates on the floor!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:51pm Sam Segal:

Sounds cathartic!
  9:51pm Dean:

Indeed. You can't get more Greek than catharsis.
Avatar 9:58pm northguineahills:

Dug that Dj Center!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:04pm Sam Segal:

You have a dubbers heart, NGH!
Avatar 10:11pm northguineahills:

We need more horse operas, but w/ Mr Ed and Francis the Talking Mule!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:14pm Sam Segal:

Less Bojack Horseman, more Mr. Ed!
Avatar 10:15pm northguineahills:

I just started binging Bojack Horseman, although dark at times, it's full of reflections of todays society and plenty of obscure easter eggs and jokes that mostly woofmooers would get.
Avatar 10:16pm northguineahills:

I would hope I have a dubbers heart, I used to dj monthly at the I dub NY and Dub Dub parties: soundcloud.com...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:17pm Sam Segal:

I have been wanting to watch Bojack for awhile. Still on my list.
Avatar 10:17pm coelacanth∅))):

Avatar 10:24pm coelacanth∅))):

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:40pm WR:

I thought I heard Sonny Sharrock call my name. Howdy partners!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:45pm WR:

Mr. Segal, quite a nice spread you have. I think as first time listener that I should browse you shows in the archive.
Avatar 10:47pm coelacanth∅))):

funny, i just had a Sonny Sharrock marathon earlier today
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:47pm Sam Segal:

WR, I'd be honored if you would! Glad I put out the Sonny signal for you!
  10:51pm Dean:

Remarkably, when I heard the first strains of this cheesy Genesis tune I thought, "Strawbs!"
Avatar 10:57pm coelacanth∅))):

i have a technical question someone here might be able to answer, if you'll pardon me.
my receiver specifies a 75 ohm antenna for fm and i cannot find one that i know i had. the only dipole antennas i find on ebay that have a lead wire long enough to come close to reaching the ceiling are "300 Ohm to 75 Ohm Push-On Adapter" antennas.
will this work as well? is there anything at all about it that is not as good as a straight up 75ohm wire beginning to end?
is there an upside to the 300 ohm adapter?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:57pm WR:

I could listen to Robert Wyatt sing telephone book or even recite the English alphabet.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:58pm doctorjazz:

Time for some horsin' around.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:59pm Sam Segal:

Happy Horse, Doctor Jazz!
Avatar 10:59pm coelacanth∅))):

i'm pretty sure he DID recite the english alphabet on an early soft machine album! ("II", i think)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:02pm WR:

Coelacanthø (holy sh!t your user name is in my text buffer as first choice for coe!) except for very demanding spec the adapter is just as good. My 2 cents...
Avatar 11:02pm coelacanth∅))):

(yes, on "volume two" - "a concise british alphabet" parts 1 & 2)
Avatar 11:04pm coelacanth∅))):

Thanks WR. i know little about ohms and such, i'm embarrassed to say.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:04pm WR:

Yes, remarkably Wyatt performed the English alphabet forward and backward on that LP. Hello esteemed doctorjazz.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:07pm doctorjazz:

Great Monk-ing!
Avatar 11:09pm coelacanth∅))):

(i enjoyed that genesis track)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:11pm Sam Segal:

Coel, your validation on that Genesis tune counts for a lot!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:20pm WR:

Sorry, missed who you said was on bass clarinet on that Monk tune?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:24pm Sam Segal:

That was the great Rudi Mahall
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:31pm WR:

Thank you. Feel silly to ask when I can look it up on the internet but wanted to capture the info in the comments for when I come back to the show in the archive. Heading off to sleep now. Will comment when I listen to archived shows. Cheers all.
Avatar 11:33pm northguineahills:

Damnit, was watching my niece and missed Lea....
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:33pm Sam Segal:

Avatar 11:50pm coelacanth∅))):

so, i was across the room and didn't consider that that wasn't Jon Hassell before; but i don't see his name over there
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:53pm Sam Segal:

Yeah, could have been either Sam Gendel and Sam Wilkes or CHI...both employ that Hassell sounding trumpet effect.
Avatar 12:01am coelacanth∅))):

never heard of either of them. must check them out (together and, possibly, individually)
Avatar 12:01am coelacanth∅))):
