Mark, I was listening to a podcast where a bunch of African academics were lamenting the lack of indigenous languages publishing academic (or translations into indigenous languages), let alone digital databases. So, what started out as a Hausa, Swahili, and Zulu language FB pages became the frontrunner in setting up publishing in indigenous languages and now is looking more funding for a digital DB free from Google. They are now helping like-minded academics around the world to do such....

Mark, there was a great graphic going around with this fact a couple weeks ago.

  6:35pm Sam:

Ha, I would never pay one penny for email. An email company is just a giant data storage drive. Why would you even need employees beyond a couple guys to keep the machines running?
  6:35pm John from Florham park:

@Chersti stay safe
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:36pm Mark Hurst:

@Sam sorry, but either you're trolling or you have no idea the complexity of running a solid digital product like Fastmail/Protonmail.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:36pm mcginniwa:

I realized Slack's business model was renting the knowledge that you generated at your organization back to you. Essentially holding it ransom after you hit the "you must pay to find this" threshold.
  6:38pm kevlicki:

Who’s server space does slack use? Don’t all these companies use Amazon and Googles storage services?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:38pm Travisano66:

"The only reason Gmail is around is because it makes money for Google." And that's why I use it. I want my content to exist for the rest of my life.

  6:38pm Dave Miss:

What ever happened to Eudora?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:39pm Mark Hurst:

I'm not sure about Slack. But lots and lots of companies use Amazon Web Services. Netflix, for example. If Amazon's servers go down, Netflix goes down. I *think* Apple hosts its iCloud on Google servers but am not 100% sure.

@Travisano that's totally fair! As long as you're making a decision based on an awareness of the issues.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:42pm Travisano66:

I am very sorry that the Sin Eater jobs need to be done to keep YouTube running, but I assume no one is being forced to do them. Aren't slaughterhouse jobs also horrible and traumatizing for many people. Again, I assume they have a choice.
Avatar 🤖 6:43pm Bas NL:

I've just checked Fastmail pricing.. seems very reasonable.

  6:49pm kevlicki:

Also there’s an email service called riseup.net ,that was created by activists and organizers, as a “secure” email service. The creators donate much of their time to maintain it, so it’s not the most agile service, but they’re not spying on you

Regarding the "changing address" problem - this is why I always recommend getting your own domain (which also costs money, but you can take it anywhere without changing your address!)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:52pm melinda:

I started using gmail more only because my local email service doesn't work well on Apple devices so local address mail gets forwarded to gmail on my phone.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:52pm Vanessa bikes:

I switched to protonmail, it's fine. I don't forward because I am overwhelmed with the billion subscriptions I have to my gmail. It is taking months to switch all of the important accounts to my new protonmail account, but I feel good about it!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:52pm Folsom:

Travisano66 if i was paying then I would rather pay someone other than Google, also RRNov63 is correct, if you don't have a local copy then you can't guarantee it is available even if Google doesn't stop the service.
