Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:15am melinda:

I was looking at the '64 version on the playlist and thinking for a minute that the Ventures were way ahead of their time putting out a proto-disco number back then. Im not fully caffeinated yet.

  9:23am Brendan:

Disco was good to everyones career. Even Beethoven.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:23am steveo:

disco*
Avatar 9:24am Brian in UK:

This 76 version has lost its dreamy quality in trying to be too hip.
  9:25am yippie:

even lil nazx was saved by disco
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:26am Ken From Hyde Park:

Yay, Do or DIY music!
Avatar 9:27am Davee:

Dis go here and dis go there.
Avatar 9:29am Davee:

I hope it isn't all disco
Avatar 9:30am YETI BOB:

Os Mutantes recorded "Baby" twice - does that count?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:30am steveo:

i wasn't very old in 1975 but i remember that some people were really mad about disco hahaha
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:31am steveo:

maybe disco was Nixon's fault
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:31am Hughie Considine:

Fascinating subject, Joe. But the second version is almost never better, right? (Except, like, Godfather II). I'm sure you'll turn up some worthy follow-ups.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:31am steveo:

google says 'No results found for "disco was nixon's fault".'
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:32am melinda:

I get A Summer Place confused with Peyton Place.
Avatar 9:33am Davee:

We can still blame Nixon
Avatar 9:33am YETI BOB:

@steveo: Disco was popular with minorities and it was gay-friendly. Nixon was an uptight white dude. He would have listened to Pat Boone or something.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:34am steveo:

@davee ok whew

@yeti more properly stated as "disco was a reaction to nixon" i suppose
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:35am steveo:

oh boy does my mom love frankie avalon
Avatar 9:35am YETI BOB:

Personally, I think knee-jerk hatred of disco is a tired position and needs to be reconsidered.
  9:36am inky bob:

Do you know the Lee Hazelwood remake of These Boots are Made for Walking? Easily as good as the original - if not better
Avatar 9:36am YETI BOB:

A DJ in Chicago hosted "Disco Demolition Night" in 1979 at Wrigley Field - they dynamited a big box of disco records before the game.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:37am LW Rhino:

This sounds more like the theme to "Love Boat".
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:37am steveo:

@yeti yeah, that's kind of the joke I'm trying to make (but you also have to admit some of these disco remakes are pretty terrible)
Avatar 9:37am Joe McG:

@Hughie: Yes! In fact, very few remakes have actually been hits, so the whole enterprise seems incredibly misguided.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:37am Lunchbox3030:

@inky bob i believe lee actually produced the original for nancy sinatra, which is prob why he would then cover it
Avatar 9:37am YETI BOB:

Looking back at images from that event now, it's not a great look - a bunch of white dudes blowing up records by black and Latin artists ...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:37am steveo:

(in a wonderful way)
  9:38am inky bob:

Hey Yeti Bob - I'm with you on the disco subject -
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:38am Asheville Jon:

suggestion:
Ventures: Theme from Hawaii 5-0
Henry Mancini: Theme from Hawaii 5-0 from the "The Cop Show Themes" album
Avatar 9:38am YETI BOB:

@steveo: I'm probably being oversensitive.
Avatar 9:39am YETI BOB:

@inky: thanks fellow Bob
Avatar 9:39am artbrau:

I thought I was hearing Aqua Marina by Barry Gray (from "Stingray") for a second. I guess it ripped off "Venus." or the other way round.
Avatar 9:40am YETI BOB:

(and, having lived through the era - yes there was plenty of HORRIBLE disco music!. But also plenty of HORRIBLE rock music, and that didn't make me hate rock in general)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:40am steveo:

@yeti, I think most people around here are happy to find the value in any kind of music (or non-music), even disco :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:41am Krys O.:

Oh, thank you for this Ruth Brown!
Avatar 9:41am YETI BOB:

@steveo: true. i'll get off my damn soapbox now.
  9:41am MplsCoco:

Good morning Joe and others!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:42am The Oscar:

@Bobs Uncle Michael did a whole show about the Disco Sucks rally a few months back. Pretty interesting stuff-- worth a listen.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:42am Krys O.:

@Yeti Bob: Yes, the anti-disco movement was steeped in bigotry. timeline.com...
  9:43am Brendan:

Going the other way chronologically can be interesting. Demos for example.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:44am Krys O.:

I went to New York, New York disco when I was 15 with my sister and her husband. It was after their wedding. It was quite bizarre, but fun.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:51am steveo:

A winner! "Sedaka's slow version peaked at #8 in February 1976 and went to number one on the Easy Listening chart"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:51am Hughie Considine:

I have to say, that is a worthy remake.
  9:52am Tim 07030:

Great show, Joe! I am holding out hope for the weird-ass 1970s version of ‘Great Balls of Fire’!
Avatar 9:53am Joe McG:

(and you could do a whole show of Johnny Cash makes/remakes, if you so desired)
Avatar 10:01am artbrau:

ugh. Hey, let's do a "rock and roll" version!
  10:01am Tim 07030:

Wow, Ernie threw everything in the company store into this remake!
  10:01am Brendan:

Songs that should never be re-done or for that matter, played back to back:
Im Your Captain/Closer to Home
Green Grass and High Tides
The Gates of Delirium
Whippin Post
The End
Avatar 10:01am Davee:

How about a disco version of this song

  10:06am Tim 07030:

Sing it, Del!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:06am steveo:

i like this remake, heard the original hundreds of times, might be the first time for the remake ("This version was issued as a single, and reached No. 122 on Billboard's 'Bubbling Under the Hot 100'.")
Avatar 10:07am Brian in UK:

This is a good case for the abolition of 'bonus' tracks.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:07am The Oscar:

April Stevens (and Nino Tempo) don't get enough credit for their pleasantly bonkers pop songs.
  10:08am Brendan:

i got some off the shannon redo, pantz
Avatar 10:09am artbrau:

holy moly!
Avatar 10:10am Joe McG:

@Brendan: A mix, but I tried to go for things that were attempts at having another hit with the same tune. The Everlys would be a cherished exception.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:10am steveo:

lol that car crash effect was a big hit
Avatar 10:10am Brian in UK:

@artbrau I was thinking the same about Aqua Marina.

@coelacanth survived as well. It was a weekend of doing what my wife told me to do. I'm a good furniture mover apparently
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:15am Hughie Considine:

There's a lot of subtext in Leslie Gore revisiting this song.
Avatar 10:16am Brian in UK:

'63 seems to be the cutoff for the originals. Just pre-Beatles.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:18am steveo:

some research indicates that that car crash effect used in the april stevens original was made popular by hanna-barbera www.youtube.com...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:18am Hughie Considine:

A few months after her appearance on the TAMI Show, Leslie Gore was at Sarah Lawrence, having halted her career for all intents and purposes; her fellow students snubbed her because her kind of pop wasn't bohemian enough. She also dissed the food there, which didn't win her any fans at the school. Kind of sad.
  10:19am Brendan:

Wow ...that was a good one.
Avatar 10:19am coelacanth∅:

Phillippe that doesn't sound bad!
...it's good to be good at something. maybe i should get married so i can find out what i'm good at
  10:21am melinda:

There is a good movie called the Secret History of Disco. Interviews and re-enactments, explores theories about disco hate but with humor.
  10:21am thelma blitz:

interesting show, Joe!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:23am The Oscar:

"Mother" by Danzig comes to mind, but something tells me that's not coming up on Surface Noise.
  10:23am melinda:

There is a great scene with all the ex-Village People explaining that there was absolutely nothing gay about the band.
Avatar 10:24am coelacanth∅:

well, Bob Marley and the wailers turned making remakes into international stardom.
  10:25am Brendan:

@melinda Disco Demolition Night was an example of that gone very wrong https://youtu.be/gWNh_vdg75s
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:26am Krys O.:

Awright!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:26am The Oscar:

Your intro had me psyched up for a disco version of "Monster Mash!"
Avatar 10:26am coelacanth∅:

Howlin' Wolf, John Lee Hooker etc. recorded those songs tons of times for various labels and often under pseudonyms; but often there wasn't much difference between the versions.
  10:27am Listener Alexandra:

Good morning, Joe--it's been fun to hear how this idea of yours is playing out :-)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:27am steveo:

lol @oscar, same; i don't think i ever knew the title of Frankenstein here (#learning)
Avatar 10:28am Joe McG:

@coelacanth: Yeah, I'm trying to avoid those kind of "rights" remakes, although I'm glad that the artists were trying to get paid!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:29am The Oscar:

Didn't Gang of Four remake Entertainment in the mid-00s? Was that some sort of rights thing?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:29am Krys O.:

I played this Edgar Winter album from my brother's collection when I came home from school.
Avatar 10:29am coelacanth∅:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:32am Krys O.:

Cool. Didn't know about this 1983 version.
Avatar 10:33am coelacanth∅:

this frankie is scary; and sad! did not know this existed and i will erase it from my mind when it ends!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:33am The Oscar:

I might actually prefer this version, but I'm of the mindset that adding Halloween sound effects is a good way to improve *any* song.
  10:33am mrmikestandsir:

a la Herbie Hancock
Avatar 10:34am Joe McG:

@coelacanth: Yeah, major label remakes of songs from indie labels are a whole 'nother story. B-52s, R.E.M., Go-Go's, you could do a whole show of those, too.
Avatar 10:34am coelacanth∅:

the original could not have been improved upon though!
Avatar 10:35am coelacanth∅:

Joe yeah, the original 45 of rock lobster rules! (which says a lot because the album version is great too!)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:35am The Oscar:

IIRC the Residents rerecorded a bunch of their songs for a couple of compilations, on the premise that releasing a straight greatest hits comp would be too square.
Avatar 10:37am coelacanth∅:

okay this part's cool...mixing in what, stravinsky?

NOOOOOOOO!!!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:39am The Oscar:

Oh man-- speaking of Devo, does "Devo 2.0" count?
  10:39am zephyr:

Dear Edgar. You are not Herbie Hancock. This is not "Rockit". Stick to the Scientology operas....
  10:40am tadpoles:

The brilliant Sparks recorded a whole album of own remakes calling it "Plagiarism"! Great show Joe!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:40am steveo:

vocals?! are there vocals on the original Frankenstein?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:41am The Oscar:

Ahhhh so hard not to bang on my desk!
  10:41am Brendan:

Tainted Meat
  10:41am Listener Alexandra:

That was one of my best ones...probably better than Wham/George Michael.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:41am Krys O.:

I heart Soft Cell!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:42am Blues Mandinga:

Ea!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:42am steveo:

how can there be so few clickystars on this, Krys?
Avatar 10:44am Hubig Pie:

I guess the single didnt have the "where did our love go" outro
Avatar 10:45am Joe McG:

@Hubig Pie: There are two versions, one with and one without.
  10:47am \( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)ノ\( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)ノ\( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)ノ:

\( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)ノ Taint lol
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:48am Krys O.:

There already was a Tainted Dub.
  10:52am Brendan:

The extended dance versions segment
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:57am steveo:

Blue Monday, "best selling 12 inch single of all time"
  10:58am Jamie:

love Tainted Love, but nothing beats Sex Dwarf for me
  10:58am Hugh:

We called this (first version) the Surfer Killer back in the Santa Barbara days.
  10:58am Brendan:

It’s Immaterial’s “Ed’s Funky Diner” and subsequent Friday Night/Saturday Morning 12” version are worthy (the latter a beautifully layered song).
  10:58am Jamie:

really enjoying these picks
  10:59am Some Guy from Nutley:

The Soft Cell and New Order selections aren't so different as to merit inclusion on this otherwise delightful show. Just my two cents.
  11:00am Jamie:

hey, I found the hipster
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:01am Ken From Hyde Park:

There is Sonic Youth / Lydia Lunch "Death Valley '69." I assume that is a revision of a previous release?
Avatar 11:01am coelacanth∅:

when this song came on every week (the first version) was when i stepped outside for air
Avatar 11:01am artbrau:

Brings to mind the UK and then US versions of West End Girls/Pet Shop Boys. The US release was buffed to have no edge to it. Sad.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:01am Asheville Jon:

I now Eurodance
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:01am steveo:

i don't mind if you just finish out playing different versions of blue monday (oh look your background is blue)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:02am Krys O.:

Bedsitter was my jam.
Avatar 11:02am Marc Francis:

I love Hardfloor. I forgot they did a remix of this!
  11:02am SeanG:

DANCE NEW JERSEY DANCE
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:02am The Oscar:

I'm imagining "Blue Monday" as an event that falls every 5-7 years, kind of like leap year.
Avatar 11:03am artbrau:

Is that "Heart of Glass" under there?
Avatar 11:03am coelacanth∅:

that whole soft cell album is good. chips on my shoulder; wave goodbye....
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:05am jinjabredboy:

aren't these remixers remixing - rather than performers reviving?
Avatar 11:05am Hubig Pie:

Maybe the third monday of a calendar month is referred to as "Blue Mondy"
Avatar 11:06am Joe McG:

Yeah, you're right jinjabred, but I love the year designations and couldn't resist how the song changed with the times.
Avatar 11:06am Hubig Pie:

Monday
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:06am Stevel:

ALL BLUE MONDAY ALL THE TIME!!
Avatar 11:07am Hubig Pie:

Besides, Fats Domino was the original
Avatar 11:08am Marc Francis:

All those Roland 303's. I think Hardfloor used 4 or 5 of them when they made or remixed music. So dirrrrrty.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:08am jinjabredboy:

that's ok Joe - cleaving to a concept shouldn't get in the way of a great show!
Avatar 11:09am coelacanth∅:

sorry, obviously a minority here, but this song in 1983 was an early indication of the soulless abyss that rules the commercial music arena today.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:10am Stevel:

Fish: Interesting point. I like that version above the others, but I see what you mean.
Avatar 11:11am coelacanth∅:

(...actually it makes sense it was the best selling 12" of all time)
Avatar 11:12am coelacanth∅:

Thank you Stevel. i'm prepared for an onslaught of hate!
  11:12am Brendan:

That one was the Windows Vista of remakes
  11:16am Brendan:

Thanks for blowing out the candle
  11:17am David in London:

Oh bless you Joe. I think hearing ‘Goodbye England’s rose’ might induce projectile vomiting.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:19am The Oscar:

I'd actually love to hear "Candle in the Wind" remade in the style of that "16 Tons" earlier.
Avatar 11:20am coelacanth∅:

i didn't know there's a remake of prettiest star. will check it out
  11:22am Tim 07030:

Haha I own this Ryko reissue and have absolutely no recollection of ever hearing this remake.
Avatar 11:22am Brian in UK:

Did Nellie the Elephant go through phases?
Avatar 11:23am Joe McG:

@David: Ha ha ha!
  11:23am David in London:

@The Oscar, or Blue Monday 95...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:23am tim from champaign (now washington):

Hi Joe and everybody! Here's a suggestion for next time...Marianne Faithful has three renditions of As Tears Go By.
  11:23am tadpoles:

Love Lodger but have never heard this. Funnily enough I'm just reading Dylan Jones' "Oral History" of Bowie so this is great to hear. Cheers.
  11:24am Neil M:

I think of Jerry Lee Lewis as the selfie cover king. In part because he was the primary artist on the soundtrack of the Great Balls of Fire movie about his life. But he also went back to the well several other times. And of course, he'd put out live albums when times were lean -- and they often were. (and I happen to think that Great Balls soundtrack has some really good versions!)
Avatar 11:24am Joe McG:

@tim: I have two of them with me but may not get to them, we'll see! Time is running short.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:24am jinjabredboy:

I remember when this version debuted - bowie was headlining one night of a benefit for the ICA - david byrne the other - byrne played a full set on his night - bowie came out an performed this one song only...
Avatar 11:25am pantz:

Pretty sure he played this during Glass Spider tour. I seem to remember it live.
  11:26am Tim 07030:

@pantz I think he OPENED with it during Glass Spider tour
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:26am Krys O.:

Such a fun show, Joe!
Avatar 11:26am Joe McG:

Thanks, Krys, happy to see you here as always!
Avatar 11:26am Roberto:

Was that the song that's basically "All The Young Dudes" backwards?
  11:27am Reno D:

Mr. B. Ferry has been updating some of his 1970s and 1980s work by remaking them in the 2010s to sound like they were recorded in the 1920s.
Avatar 11:27am artbrau:

Does anyone else hear "glister" instead of "blister?"
Avatar 11:28am pantz:

@Tim07030 Thx. The memory fades but some things I'll never forget.
Avatar 11:28am Marc Francis:

I didn't realize that they rerecorded this!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:29am Stevel:

The Horns of Dilemma!
Avatar 11:29am Joe McG:

@Reno: Wow, I have to hear those! He's another "show of his own" kind of guy.
  11:29am Tim 07030:

@roberto ‘Move On’ is young dudes backwards
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:29am steveo:

bass saxophone, check
Avatar 11:30am Hubig Pie:

This a Morphine bass sax-a-mo-phone sound
Avatar 11:30am coelacanth∅:

well -it's not as good, but i appreciate that they did something totally different with it.
Avatar 11:30am coelacanth∅:

...(and it ain't bad!)
Swag For Life Member 11:30am DroneTree:

Is that a bass clarinet? Anybody know?
  11:31am tadpoles:

#Reno D. You may be thinking of "The Jazz Age" by the Bryan Ferry Orchestra. It's very neat!
Avatar 11:31am Roberto:

Oh derp. Thanks Tim.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:32am tim from champaign (now washington):

I happened upon a Brian Ritchie show about 10 years ago. It was really cool. He did Albert Ayler covers.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:33am steveo:

ah, the proper name is "baritone saxo-mo-phone"
Avatar 11:33am Brian in UK:

Backing singers and a hook. What more do you need.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:34am tim from champaign (now washington):

Ohhhhhhhhhhhh
Avatar 11:34am coelacanth∅:

wow so Neil already had that piano solo mapped out just as the monkees' version ended up with
Avatar 11:35am pantz:

The "Paul Simon" treatment.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:35am Cmurtha:

hmmmmmmmmmmmmm
  11:35am Reno D:

@Tadpoles: Yep, and 2018's "Bitter-Sweet", wherein he sings (well, sort of), unlike the all-instrumental "The Jazz Age".
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:35am Cmurtha:

OH LORD THE STEEL DRUMS
Avatar 11:35am coelacanth∅:

what happened
Avatar 11:35am Strandlund:

Calypso...?
Avatar 11:35am Brian in UK:

Some of these remakes sound like they are trying to 'make it real'.
  11:36am David in London:

Diamond should have complimented the funky calypso arrangement by doing the vocals in a Leonard Cohen style.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:36am steveo:

i can't believe he stole this from the monkees
  11:36am Brendan:

Neil sounds like a lounge singer on the love boat
Avatar 11:36am Joe McG:

@steveo: Ha ha ha!
Avatar 11:37am Brian in UK:

Joe, great idea yet again. Got to cut and run. Good week everyone.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:37am The Oscar:

You're going to end this with Smash Mouth, aren't you?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:37am tim from champaign (now washington):

Wow, Joe is going deep deep deep!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:38am Cmurtha:

Girl you'll be a woman soon
  11:38am zephyr:

Joe...FYI: With a Twist... is a 1997 album by Todd Rundgren. Asked to produce an album of new versions of his older singles, Rundgren decided to record the songs in Bossa nova style. Continuing the theme, Rundgren toured theaters with a replica of a tiki bar.
Avatar 11:38am Joe McG:

Neil drove Brian in the UK out the house! :)
  11:38am davefromtoronto:

sounds like he's singing from a rocking chair...
Avatar 11:38am coelacanth∅:

hahaha!
Avatar 11:39am YETI BOB:

I love this song (I'm a Believer), as performed by the Monkees and Robert Wyatt. But Neil Diamond is *ruining* it! (Yeah I know he wrote it. But he's ruining his own song).
Avatar 11:39am Joe McG:

@zephyr: I have it here, but I think I'm going to run out of time!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:40am Tim 07030:

Neil looks back and imbues the song with the wisdom of his years...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:40am steveo:

if there's a 4th version I'm going to lunch early ;)
Avatar 11:40am YETI BOB:

I wish I could stay for the rest of the show but I gotta go join the big protest in front of t**mp tower!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:40am Cmurtha:

I kinda dig his old man vocals, but them coupled with this rock-a-bye-baby background is too hokey 4 me
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:41am tim from champaign (now washington):

@Yeti Bob - give a little extra hell for me!
Avatar 11:41am Strandlund:

Today's show is just one of the reasons why Surface Noise is one of my favorite shows on WFMU...

Avatar 11:42am Strandlund:

I'll be there with you in spirit Yeti Bob...Give 'em hell!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:43am Mick:

Hells yes Yeti Bob!
Avatar 11:43am coelacanth∅:

i wont be at the dump tower but i will be carving his face into a pumpkin later
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:45am Guido from Cologne:

The single seems to sound totally diferent to the LP version.
Avatar 11:45am coelacanth∅:

that piano part kept reminding me of compared to what (Les McCann version)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:45am Guido from Cologne:

--- the 1966 LP version
Avatar 11:45am Joe McG:

@Guido: It might be! Or maybe my copy is just incredibly worn. :)
Avatar 11:47am coelacanth∅:

okay, respectable remake
