A viking ship appears on the horizon, a likeness of Loretta Lynn carved into its bow. Rare birds flock together to sing Francoise Hardy as soul hits. A sunset of blips and bleeps fills the air.

Hello Trouble, busy at work but happily listening

the slant of "the slanted life" is a reference to Dickinson's poem about winter melancholy! I get it now!

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:58am Adrian in London:

Oh Trouble, I've finally got round to reading Elena Ferrante's Neapolitan Quartet. I seem to recall that you liked those books. I've nearly finished volume three. Reading them all is basically my job now…
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:01am ParUbi:

@Lunchbox3030 It's (usually) spooky sounding indie folk. She has a pretty ghostly voice.

  10:29am John from Florham park:

Love when djs talk about books on here, I get the feeling that a lot of them are well read
Avatar 10:30am jt:

I memorized an Emily Dickinson poem in High School .. carried it around in my head for years... after awhile I actually figured out what it was about. So precise and crisp. Very accurate observer of nature human and otherwise. Lots of love for Emily Dickinson.
  10:34am John from Florham park:

@Prudy sitting in a parking lot just listening to this very fascinating discussion shows how much deep this station is
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:35am ParUbi:

This is what I like about WFMU-- no lanes!
  10:36am mrmikestandsir:

Yay!! You're so right! In ART there should be NO LANES. All art(s)!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:38am Lunchbox3030:

this has been a great interview to listen to! rosanna sounds so passionate about her craft, and thats the best an artist can strive to be
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:39am Ken From Hyde Park:

I remember watching Emily Dickinson on the Police Woman show back in the 70s.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:40am ParUbi:

Here's one of my favorite of her poems:
HOW happy is the little stone
That rambles in the road alone,
And does n’t care about careers,
And exigencies never fears;
Whose coat of elemental brown 5
A passing universe put on;
And independent as the sun,
Associates or glows alone,
Fulfilling absolute decree
In casual simplicity.

NY Social is on "New Music For Electronic And Recorded Media" from 1750 Arch records, an early collection of experimental music by female composers that didn't mention that in its title!
  11:03am John from Florham park:

Down with the man trouble
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:03am Ike:

Probably not too many of you ever listen to New Sounds on WNYC but Laurie Anderson really spoke up and helped to save it when it was threatened with cancellation recently, so she's a hero for local radio as far as I'm concerned. All these NPR news/talk stations are heavily homogenized now and it's pretty impressive that people stood up and held back the crushing tide of homogeneity trying to swallow that last daily hour on WNYC.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:05am Webhamster Henry:

There was massive pushback against that New Sounds and other John Schaefer program cancellations. The real surprise is that it actually worked!
  11:06am John from Florham park:

@Ike and webhamster hope the same thing happens with WBAI but I am not holding my breath
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:09am Passaic River Blues:

@Ike: did not know that about Anderson. Very commendable.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:10am steveo:

Ike, I don't know when New Sounds is on, but when I hear it, I like it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:12am sphere:

I sent an email pushing WNYC to save New Sounds. Like Henry, I was astonished to find that the station listened.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:12am Ike:

WBAI? Do we need WBAI anymore? You can get left-wing news anywhere on the Internet now. It served a purpose in the 80s and 90s when not everybody was on the Internet and couldn't get to The Nation or Jacobin or The Indypendent or whatever, but now? Really? Who needs this? Worse, it always sounds terrible. First radio should sound good and be entertaining.
  11:13am John from Florham park:

@Ike you have a point there point taken
Avatar 11:14am jt:

..had to dance to Eddie Bo , too. How cold I not? "Bucket got a hole in it".. even the dog was dancing!

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:16am Lunchbox3030:

i only listen to WFMU in terms of radio. is wnyc worth tuning in to?
Avatar 11:16am βrian:

Hmm, is this track really in Italian?
Avatar 11:17am βrian:

Ah, ok. It is. I thought my stream had gone rogue.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:17am Priscilla:

Yes it is
Avatar 11:18am jt:

WBAI was good since it was so wacky nothing is that wacky even WFMU hads a kind of "studied and aware wacky-ness" while WBAI was playing Avantgarde composers and bizarre music that even WFMU doesn't approach, it will be missed. A big loss, in my book. Don't own a TV or watch I just listen to the radio. There is a huge hole now ..there on the dial...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:20am sphere:

@ John - Looks like New Sounds is on at 11:00 PM daily.
Avatar 11:20am Hubig Pie:

I like my beer cold
my tv loud
and my wacky-ness, studied and aware
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:21am Ike:

@jt, WBAI used to do music occasionally but not in recent years, right? I mean I rarely tune(d) in but when I did, it was 85-95% dismal talk that sounded terrible, and almost never any music. Just the very very occasional world music. Nothing avant-garde lately that I've ever come across. Wasn't that the 60s and 70s you're talking about?
  11:24am Matthew:

Trouble! You are playing Emahoy and that mAkes you officially the coolest DJ on earth!!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:26am Passaic River Blues:

Lovely transition from Rome to Addis Ababa. This work by Guèbrou is perfection itself. I can imagine my grandmother the church organist and Chopin-to-Tin Pan Alley enthusiast appreciating its familiar yet persistently unique flourishes.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:27am Ike:

Yeah this is awesome!
  11:29am John from Florham park:

@Sohere thanks
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:30am tim from champaign (now washington):

Hello trouble and everybody! Did anyone listen to Jim White's DJ set a few weeks ago on Daniel Blumin's show? He played Emahoy, Mary Margaret O'Hara and other Trouble regulars. It seems like those Australian musicians are really dialed in to a higher plain of listening.
Avatar 11:31am Hubig Pie:

Is this the original of this? I've only heard the Yo La Tengo cover
Swag For Life Member 11:31am Geoffrey in Ottawa:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:36am Lunchbox3030:

@tim well, us aussies live a million miles away from anyone else, so all we do with our time is meditate on the fundamental truths of music and do barbies. its a simple life~
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:36am Granny Spicy Tuna (they/them):

oh, here's a song that has been overlooked too long, thank you!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:36am Priscilla:

The life-changing magic of Trouble's show
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:37am Webhamster Henry:

WBAI has been a train wreck for years.
I used to be a big fan when I first came to New York (probably because of WFMU's lousy Manhattan signal). I used to like the music (Peter Bochan's freeform show was and still is spectacular), the "Morning Serial" which sometimes was freshly produced, "Off the Hook" the hacker's radio show, the Citizen Kafka Show and Free Music Store revival, and shows like the one I was a guest on, Oblique Stretegies.
They had the worst, most unlisteneable marathons ever. And that's saying a lot for the station that basically invented Marathons.
Check out the Bob Fass documentary for a look at WBAI, and if you can find Steve Post's "Playing in the FM Band" you can get more tales of WBAI's salad days.
  11:37am John from Florham park:

@Lunchbox3030 damn good stations that I just mentioned above
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:39am tim from champaign (now washington):

@lunchbox3030 - haha! That's the same way people have described Midwesterners in the US. That's were I'm from. I guess there's a certain truth to it.

  11:41am John from Florham park:

@Tim out side of around the big cities in the Midwest or college towns you can’t find good stations
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:42am Lunchbox3030:

@John Triple J is pretty great for a commercial station. influenced a lot of my music taste growing up, good indie rock. havent heard of 3rrr though, will have to give them a listen. This show has been so educational!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:43am SSS:

I just ate apple pie made in a cast iron pan with ginger and chili flakes... Yow!! Perfect time to remember seeing the Eurythmics at Jones Beach Theater with Saturn's' rings visible through binocs. Bob D is still actually alive, yes?

@Tim some things, regardless of distance, stay constant. When you have got nothing better to do, you innovate! and cook smoked meats apparently :p
  11:44am John from Florham park:

@Lunchbox3030 considering that radio Australia owns it
Avatar 11:44am thormagma:

Also, @SSS: that sounds like heaven on earth.
  11:47am Mike Wolf:

Literally yesterday I moved ever-so-slightly out of the red and into the black, and today I am so happy to be able to finally pledge to this show, which has become so important to me... Maybe someday I'll even start clicky-starring!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:48am tim from champaign (now washington):

@Lunchbox3030 - definitely! I think that's why so many great/weird bands come from the midwest and Australia. I think that's also why there's such a mutual appreciation society between the 2 regions, Also, bbqing, sitting on porches drinking beer and going out to the woods for campfires and drinking beer.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:48am Phillippe Bastille:

A late howdy to y'all
  11:53am Joe McG:

Thanks for the Monroes, Trouble, really hit the spot!
Avatar 11:54am ron in S FL:

Same here, thanks!
Avatar 11:54am Roberto:

Yo that wuz hawt
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:56am Lunchbox3030:

@tim both regions took their rock background and made something unique of it - midwest pushed towards emo/hardcore and aus (at least syd/melborne) have been drifting towards psychadelic and prog rock. the more we change, the more we stay the same.
and yea, fond memories of just sitting on the porch with the sun setting in the distance and a beer in your hand. cant go wrong with the simple pleasures
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:56am Ike:

@Lunchbox3030@11:16, oops, belated response: mostly no, but New Sounds at 11 p.m. is pretty good sometimes. The rest is just your standard NPR news/talk.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:58am ParUbi:

Thank you, both of you!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:59am Ike:

Oops, if you're Aussie you might not know what NPR is. It's sort of our cobbled-together attempt at a public broadcaster like the BBC, with anemic government funding and lots of "funded by this or that foundation and corporation" non-commercial commercials.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:59am CHUCK ROAST:

Thank you, Trouble and Rosanna. Wonderful program, as always. Heading over to the dark side with Julie.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:00pm Lunchbox3030:

@Ike thanks for the clarification! got new sounds queueud up for later. Im actually living in DC rn, so believe me i have had my fill of dull NPR monotone politik
