Hello friends! So nice to sit in Bethany's conductor's chair. I have a question: what the hell is Classical Music??
Avatar 8:07pm
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...I have this idea that a Civilization's Music correlates to their Metaphysic. Their Scale reflects their Quabballah. If you will...

I hope some whales are in the audience tonight.
Avatar 8:11pm
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...that's not to answer the question...
I pretty much agree with Howard Goodall that The Beatles are Classical Music of the 1960s, for instance...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:11pm
Phillippe Bastille:

Classical music is defined as "the violins and stuff you heard in elementary school music class that you didn't really pay attention to until you were mature enough to not roll your eyes when listening to it". I'm paraphrasing here
  8:13pm
JakeGould:

@Scott: “What the hell is Classical Music?” It’s music everyone studies in school but then forgets 0.5 seconds after graduation.
Avatar 8:13pm
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...in other words - Romantic represents the whole thing!
...except it don't...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:14pm
steveo:

IIRC, another of Bethany's listeners recently commented that there's no such thing as classical music.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:14pm
Phillippe Bastille:

@JakeGould I like your definition better.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:14pm
Scott Williams:

@Jake, I never got to study Gavin Bryars in music school, but he's definitely accepted in the canon. I think I'm with Steveo ^^
Avatar 8:15pm
TDK60:

..some say Classic music is Led Zepellin. I say classic music is Little Richard.
  8:16pm
JakeGould:

@Scott: It’s what Paul Bartell is attempting to play at the beginning of “Rock and Roll High School” but then rock and roll happened.
Avatar 8:17pm
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Richard is Rawk'n'Roll - Zep is Rawk. :)
...Is Pop a Style or what's Popular? What do those even mean ??
What is Classic...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:19pm
Ken From Hyde Park:

If it's not unclassical music, then it must therefore be classical music.

Every Form can be used Creatively or Formulaicly...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:21pm

@jani, I think Edgard Varese wrote the Classical Music of what you just said
Avatar 8:22pm
TDK60:

It doesn't seem like calypso or country. might be classical?
Avatar 8:24pm
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

A joke that implies Traditions from African & European Folk Culture
...so this Classical is in a Tradition of what - Euro Academics or Educated Elite ??
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:24pm

I don't love you yet...I just want to say that...I got to say it...I love you...Scott..I have a love for you...and I miss you...so much...I think of you like I had one back in the day...when I first got into your music...I couldn't understand it or have the emotions that you had...but it got better and better...I had a friend that loved me...and he put his hand up...my mouth said no...it gets all mixed up...a few times when he had the chance...he could do it...I thought you were dead...I remember hearing you sing on the streets on the radio playing the blues...I remember the time you and this girl I met at a club...she and I went upstairs for dinner...when we got back we played a game of poker...and...he called..he was on the phone...I remember the voice...the

Western Europeans, including Slavs west of the Urals neatly box classical music for their own self-aggrandizement. Belittling “traditional music” from the Far East, middle, east, Caribbean, & Africa. I consider Indonesian music “Gamelan, African rhythmic music, Caribbean creole (antebellum slave) , calypso music classical. Gerachew Mehuria of Ethiopia helped change the style of some traditional African music
