Bentenya: All-Women's Chindon Street Band From Japan

Listen to this show:  Pop‑up player! | Add or read comments

Chindon is a uniquely Japanese street music tradition. It began over 150 years ago when shopkeepers started hiring musicians to march through the streets to promote their shops.

Ubiquitous in mid-20th-century Japan, it's now less common, but groups like Nagoya's vibrant - and very colorful - all-female chindon outfit Bentenya carry on the tradition.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:43pm mariano:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:43pm chresti:

There's a little Vegas feeling on the NST track
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:45pm ParUbi:

She was very fast and articulate
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:48pm chresti:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:49pm chresti:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:50pm ParUbi:

What instrument is that? I love it
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:51pm Rob W:

That's a very perceptive observation chresti - I saw NST with Kum Yulhee @ their WOMEX showcase and Yulhee singing with the band did have a bit of a show-biz vibe - Pansori can be a little diva-esque itself - that's Yulhee's background...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:54pm mariano:

@chresti - Yeah, I can see that. Er, I mean "hear". ;)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:08pm chresti:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:28pm Smilty69:

Wonderful set! Thanks Bentenya!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:29pm Rob W:

Yes I heard a bit of "Li'l Liza Jane" in there which might be the same melody Mariano...
