I bought a persimmon today on a whim in spite of not liking the only other one I had, and it is so good! Someone told me there is a bland mealy variety and a tasty one, must have gotten the tasty one.

Franco Twinkie:

I think it's the Chinese Elm that gets this stuff that looks like bran flakes. Anyway, since I'm housebound for awhile this music is a great soundtrack for goofing around inside. I just spent about five minutes making a video of a big spider walking across the kitchen floor.

Avatar 8:25pm
geezerette:

Melinda, what did it look like?
I'm so glad you mentioned that, forgot they're in season!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:28pm
Franco Twinkie:

Melinda, it's the fuyu type is what you want. Shaped like a flat tomato. Super crispy. The other ones, the mush balls are only good for throwing, if you ask me.
Avatar 8:35pm
geezerette:

Franco, they're over ripe if they taste like that. They're wonderful if they are almost fluorescent orange, vermilion, and fairly soft but not on the verge of oozing. When you freeze the flesh inside it becomes a brilliantly colored natural sorbet, very sweet and unlike anything else.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:40pm
melinda:

It's not flat, more round and slightly pointed at the bottom. Darker orange inside, smooth and sweet. Maine isn't persimmon country so they didn't specify the variety.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:41pm
melinda:

I checked it again and the interior is the same orange as the outside.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:42pm
melinda:

Last week's fruit experience was kiwi berries, they're just like miniature kiwis but smooth skin rather than hairy.
Avatar 8:44pm
geezerette:

Melinda, they look like Christmas decorations, don't they?
We love to put several in a blue bowl while they ripen. Decorative. Talking about persimmons but kiwis are like edible jewelery too.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:45pm
Gary:

Wait, what? I've never seen those before ... are they good, Melinda?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:45pm
Franco Twinkie:

Geezer, when we lived in Pasadena we had a tree of the bulb-like type. They were horrible. However, from our driveway you could see a tree in the backyard of a friend. Same type of persimmon, and they were wonderful! So go figure. Fruit trees are like siblings you might love one, but hate the other.

Avatar 8:47pm

Hoping we find kiwi berries at a farmers market.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:49pm
melinda:

@Gary yes, just like kiwis but you can eat them in one bite. It said they were grown locally so I assumed it was an old northern fruit that had fallen out of favor because it was bland, but I'm always up for odd local stuff. And they really are just smooth tiny kiwis.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:53pm
Franco Twinkie:

I'm always a little sad when summer stone fruit is over, but then again, fall fruit is so great! Last night, our neighbor across the street gave me a big bag of Guyabas. So today, when working outside was no longer an option, I went inside and made jelly - or something that looks like it.

going back to what may have been the initial fruit post that sounds like a hychia (?) persimmon Melinda and the first kind i ever had. i was warned to wait until ripe and did and they were incredible. then we (the store) got fuyu persimmons and they were terrible. then we got fuyus again and waited until they were practically rotting and they were even better than the hychias.
-they just absolutely have to be ripe.

the hychias, if they're ripe enough, you can definitely eat the skin. the fuyus the skin gets kind of stiff and not that pleasant.
(-or maybe my memory has it backward. it's been years)
