I have a very specific question for the experts. Are you familiar with the Donovan song "The Love Song" from Barabajagal? There is an amazing vocal cameo in the middle, exhorting listeners to do the Vulture -- "Yeah baby, the Vulture!" One thing that must be mentioned in the ebb & flow of vinyl is eBay. Pre-eBay you would scour used record stores in frustration for that one item you wanted and were probably willing to pay top dollar for. With eBay all of a sudden there were 10 copies out there in the cybersphere of record stores for you to pick from.

  Sat. 10/19/19 12:36pm PJ:

re bad production: I saw the True Believers in 85 opening for Los Lobos, and they sounded incredible, great songs and great playing. Their debut album came out a couple of years later, and all the life had been sucked out of the band.

Around the same time, Jason and the Nashville Scorchers were a great live band, and their second EP Fervor sounded great, the first LP Lost and Found still had good songs but the production was not so good, and the next record sounded like crap.

Robyn Hitchcock’s Respect album. Great songs, terrible mix. Would love a re-mix. REM’s Monster was surprisingly re-mixed this year, but not fixed.

All Shook Down is a special record to me, as well
  Sat. 10/19/19 12:45pm PJ:

The Replacements are still a band I listen to a lot, much more than, say, REM or Husker Du, though I listened to those bands as much back in the day. my controversial opinion: Westerberg is the best songwriter of the past 40 years.
  Sat. 10/19/19 12:46pm clarke:

ALSO: they said i won the Rocktober.
  Sat. 10/19/19 12:46pm PJ:

Tommy Stinson also liked All Shook Down best of their albums.

I always like interpreting the REM lyrics to suit my reality since I couldn't understand them anyway
  Sat. 10/19/19 12:48pm PJ:

Question: who would the experts say is the best songwriter of the last 40 years? I have a feeling someone will choose Nick Lowe.
  Sat. 10/19/19 12:48pm clarke:

REM is a band that didn't think they were "selling out" at all - BUT WERE TOTALLY SELLING OUT!
  Sat. 10/19/19 12:48pm SeanG:

Pleased to Meet Me produced by the immortal James Luther Dickinson!
  Sat. 10/19/19 12:50pm clarke:

dickinson (and joe hardy) completely fucked the replacements up!! and caused them to fire a very great drummer
  Sat. 10/19/19 12:50pm PJ:

Another question: which bands don't have songwriters per se, but have consistently created great songs (at least for a while)? e.g., New Order (despite having the worst lyrics ever)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 🎃 Sat. 10/19/19 12:51pm Tommy in Neversink:

True, REM was selling out in New York, Boston , Newark, Baltimore , DC and 50 other cities

Viva Los Straitjackets! Heard a modern synth version of Popcorn by a dj who has WFMU ties.

Grew up close to Cleveland. This could have been on Polka Varities for sure.
Avatar Sat. 10/19/19 12:52pm SmokinJ:

So funny... Polka is a serious deal, here in WI where the Polka is the official state dance ! :) Keep Rockin' guys.. We love you all!
  🎃 Sat. 10/19/19 12:53pm Listener Robert:

OK, so it may not have been intended as a polka, but it definitely is one.

The Prince comment is spot on--consider Emancipation, a 3 CD set. It's fantastic, but there's no standout track. It's just three hours of excellence.
  Sat. 10/19/19 12:55pm clarke:

much of the drums on XTX albums with the 'guest' drummers was a fairlight system in addition
  Sat. 10/19/19 12:55pm PJ:

@Tommy in Neversink: I would also have to choose Tom Waits (an unpopular opinion at WFMU, for sure)
Sat. 10/19/19 12:56pm Pro Crastinator LLP:

top single: Stop Draggin My Heart Around

think about it, it's got everything (including absence of a guest rap)

PJ I'm giving you a thumbs up

Thanks, Distinguished Gentlemen.
  Sat. 10/19/19 12:58pm PJ:

One unfortunate effect of 80's production was the insistence of using drum machines on records by rock bands that had good drummers.
