Hello all! Local radio news: WNYC is killing New Sounds, becoming even more homogeneous news/talk like all the other NPR stations. Feh! Hopefully some of those New Sounds fans will come over to WFMU.

@Ike: Like everything nowadays, it is actually worse than the headline implies, “The station said in an email sent to its staff on Thursday that it planned to close the program by the end of the year, along with most of its remaining music programming, as it shifts to more news and talk.” www.nytimes.com...

FWIW, one of the first major signs of WBAI’s decline was when they pretty much gutted the station of arts programming. So WNYC is kinda going down the “Air America” model as well?

@Jake, most other NPR stations sound like this now. Corporate world-think, this idea you have to do the same thing all the time on each station so people "know what to expect" or whatever. Actually WAMU in D.C. killed its awesome bluegrass programs so long ago (and put them on a tiny second station and then killed that too) that I figured maybe New Sounds had slipped through and was safe, but nope.
  9:20pm
JakeGould:

@Ike: On the positive side, I really get a kick out of listening to some on the local call in shows on WNYC and hearing crunchy granola pearl clutchers get upset about things like bike lanes and the strength of marijuana nowadays. It’s like some new level of well intentioned suburban panic. I love it!

I must weigh in from Los Angeles regarding what diminished returns NPR offers listeners with their news, public affairs, political analysis and informed chit-chat: We all want to be informed, but most of the station leave a lot to be desired when it comes to music programming. They are simply catering to a perceived audience that values dinner party backwash over good music. My solution: I replaced my CD player and got good speakers.

I've never seen a band do one of these whole album shows. I can kind of see the appeal, but then being able to check off every song as they come along from a program seems like it would take some of the fun out of watching a live show.

@erik: Steve Reich has now been replaced by endless tedious, ponderous, impassioned and predictable over-analysis of the the obvious I guess.

Good journalism is one thing. Beating a dead horse is another. Great name for a WNYC show: “Beating a Dead Horse with Someone.” Could be a music show one week or a talk show the other.

The beavers would have to, like, work really well together to get tons of trees and fasten them in a way that the harbor currents don’t push away the logs. And like they would need to work in coordinated shifts. Maybe even on both sides of the harbor.

Radio "Safe Harbor" is largely a myth. The FCC says you can play things that are "indecent" but not "obscene" between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m., but my understanding is that they can define that any goddamn way they want at any given time. Also I'm not clear on whether or not WFMU's internal regulations recognize "Safe Harbor". Many radio stations prefer not to take the risk, which is considerable since the FCC refuses to define what exactly is "indecent" vs. what is "obscene."
  11:24pm
Zootopia:

My station played a song with the F word three times in the morning. When I emailed the program director, she got pissed off and denied it. It was dumb because there was a clean version of the song, Lana Del Ray. Then they played another hip hop song twice with that word. The college admin took the transmitter.

I seem to remember an episode of Leave It to Beaver where the Beave and Larry Mundello made a dam with all the newspapers they collected for the school paper drive and the dam broke and flooded the auditorium the day before the annual talent show, so instead of facing Miss Landers they ran away and joined a carnival. Jim Carroll used the word “biddy” a lot in his work and it seems to be based on “bitty” but I think he also referred to old ladies in Catholic Church as “church biddies.”:

“Today was my first Biddy League game and my first day in any organized basketball league. I’m enthused about life due to this exciting event. The Biddy League is a league for anyone 12 yrs. old or under. I’m actually 13 but my coach Lefty gave me a fake birth certificate.”
