"I listened yesterday. It's no reflection on you but I could'nt see where you were going or what you were going for. This early seventies thing did'nt get noticed the first time and you talk about friends of like Dealney and Bonnie who had records out like we're supposed to remember who they are. Then you play this long winded free jazz stuff that really grates on my nerves. And that noise without a beat and sounds like someones being pinched. Then you play a reggae song, I think you called it Dub, to what, be cool? You seem to really fetishize the whole folk thing too which is obnoxious to us who don't even care. I liked it when you played that punk song though. I like Joe Belock a lot." (Visit homepage.)

Hey John - tuning in with the morning coffee, perfect AM soundtrack as always - every time I hear that Kraus record, I'm like - who's this? and I check it is Kraus! Great stuff...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:27am Ken From Hyde Park:

So ... when your microwave oven smells like burned popcorn, is there a way to make that go away? Or like an earworm, you can only replace the smell with something else? I can nuke some curry rice and report back.
Avatar 10:28am coelacanth∅:

curry rice is the cure.
not just for that but for pretty much everything.
  10:29am Polyus:

Ooh that’s some tone on that guitar.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:29am SSS:

Re - purpose the microwave into a spot welder - no more pop corn smell
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:30am steveo:

we moved and our microwave was built-in and so far we just don't have one and it's mostly ok and also it never smells
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:31am Mr. Pumpy:

Awesome set! Where do I find that the exorzist III ?!
Avatar 10:33am coelacanth∅:

i've never owned a microwave oven. (i own a microwave cellphone though) but i use one here, where i work.
...i could use a spot welder though.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:37am sphere:

aren't we past raves right now? also i thought The Man put his jackbooted heel down on anything except big festivals.
Avatar 10:37am βrian:

Yes, we avoided the problem by never owning a microwave. We did consider installing a small TV over the stove, though.

Avatar 10:45am coelacanth∅:

more than a little obvious hüsker dü influence
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:45am Ignatatus666:

I nailed that rites of spring sound on the head
They have that embrace Fugazi feel. Looked up the artist and Boom!
  10:46am Ricccy:

I loved ROS back in the day and saw them all the time. One of the best live bands I ever saw.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:47am lukavino:

  10:48am Ricccy:

Yeah, they were definitely influenced by Husker Du...and Naked Raygun.
Avatar 10:48am coelacanth∅:

but fugazi didn't sound exactly like hüsker dü
...not saying i don't like rites of spring
  10:48am Zootopia:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:48am Doug in JC:

@Ignatatus666 add One Last Wish into that mix
  10:48am Ricccy:

Fugazi was more funk/groove based.
  10:50am Zootopia:

I like the echp on this track
  10:50am karen eliot:

  10:51am Ricccy:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:52am Carmichael:

Good luck, Zootopia!
  10:53am Zootopia:

Thanx Carmichael
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:54am Ignatatus666:

I see no Hüsker du in ROS
I also don’t dig a post hardcore reference when they were around in the heyday of hardcore. The reference is on the bands description. When embrace Fugazi and other Discord bands we’re putting out records most people in the hardcore/punk scene referenced them as emo, not to be confused with what became eno.
  10:55am Zootopia:

"If the WFMU app dev are in here, I wish you'd get it so the WFMU app does not drain the battery 10 times that of apple music. I can only listen for an hour on my commute.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:56am sphere:

I definitely hear Husker Du in Rites of Spring. That was kinda surprising since I never heard that before, but it was there (even before someone else mentioned it).
  10:57am Zootopia:

If it wasn't illegal I would put up a 10 watt translator in my neighborhood so I can get the station downtown.
  10:57am karen eliot:

wow! Sounds fantastic!
  10:57am Zootopia:

OK now I wish I had headphones on
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:58am Ignatatus666:

FCC laws are a myth
You put up that damn transmitter!!
Avatar 10:59am thormagma:

Shout out Houston!!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:00am Ignatatus666:

It’s your cell phone not the app draining the battery
  11:00am Ricccy:

Husker Du formed much earlier than ROS. ROS evolved out of that early hardcore scene, but had a more melodic sound (I always thought they sounded influenced by '60s psych bands in addition to punk/hardcore). They hated the term "emo." haha
  11:00am John from Florham park:

@Zootopia hope you get the job
@Iggy hey there
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:00am karlward:

thormagma: I'm from Spring Branch. You?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:01am Doug in JC:

Yeah, my battery does great with the WFMU app. I have to use it all the time despite living a mile from the station
  11:02am Zootopia:

understood but if the app cached stream it would drain slower. I don't want to get Ken in trouble. Actually a ten watt FM transmitter is legal for personal use if it complies with FCC part 15. I guess I could use 87.7. I really thought about that.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:02am Ignatatus666:

I didn’t hear that

  11:07am Ricccy:

hardcore and jazz in the early '90s cool
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:07am Krys O.:

To deodorize a microwave oven: put 3/4 of a cup of white vinegar in a glass container; nuke it for 3-4 minutes at high, then let it sit for 30-45 minutes; repeat the process 2-3 more times. Wipe the interior with vinegar too.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:07am ɛɨk:

@Zootopia, somebody in rural VA did this and nobody has ever noticed as far as I know. But my understanding is that Part 15 is way lower than 10 watts. Although I don't really understand how it translates to wattage but it's definitely something like 1 watt or less.
  11:08am John from Florham park:

Wonder when the app will be updated?
  11:12am karen eliot:

@zootopia best of luck! it’s okay to interview them too. a good job interview shares the stage :)
  11:12am Zootopia:

damn. this is the transmitter I am looking at www.amazon.com... 15 watts, but you can lower it down to half a watt

Blue Nile. I like this track
Avatar 11:21am coelacanth∅:

  11:24am Will:

Every time I hear Blue Nile I immediately think of the overlooked band It's Immaterial. Their "White Man's Hut" is a masterpiece.

The IHOP used to be a Bob Evans and its clean and they have wifi.
  11:30am Zootopia:

Karen, honey!
Avatar 11:30am coelacanth∅:

when i was little i loved ihop (not called ihop then. people knew how to say longer words back in the day)
then after years away went to one and it was pretty terrible.
i know this doesn't mean *it* changed.
i probably changed.
...but i can attest to seeing ambulances being called to the ihop on rt.22 in union nj at least twice/week for a few years when i worked across the street.
  11:34am Zootopia:

International House of Pancakes is very close to the interview. Going to go now. If any of you listen to Sheila B, I will be in the chat room some time. TTYL I'll be stwitching to the app.
Avatar 11:35am coelacanth∅:

Polyus where are you?

Avatar 11:35am Hubig Pie:

@Polyus, 11" of pure white snow here on the ground
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:38am tim from champaign:

The past 2 or 3 times I referenced Bill Knapps no one knew what I was talking about. I'm not crazy, Bill Knapps existed, right?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:38am steveo:

i think you snow people must be in north dakota or manitoba
  11:39am karen eliot:

i personally enjoy a waffle hut experience.
  11:39am Polyus:

I am in Minneapolis, thankfully not 11” of snow here. Think it is just going to be these tiny white pellets for the rest of the day, not sure if it will accumulate much.
Avatar 11:40am coelacanth∅:

it's possible i've never been to any ihop besides that one John.
pancakes with syrup was an extreme treat as a child. we normally didn't have sweets in the house. but by the time i revisted (2-3 x) i think i ordered an omelette each time and was disappointed. i also got pancakes and was slightly disappointed, having had the perfect pancakes served at a breakfast place up where i live now.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:42am steveo:

are you sure you're not in winnipeg?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:42am sphere:

Waffle Hut is good, especially their hash browns.
Avatar 11:42am coelacanth∅:

Polyus i ask because it feels like it could flurry here, but it seems impossible! mid-october in connecticut!
-cold working out there though.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:43am steveo:

i think i'll go to a diner and get pancakes for lunch
Avatar 11:43am coelacanth∅:

that seems normal for minneapolis, for what i know. (having never been there)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:44am tim from champaign:

I caught Redd Kross a few weeks ago with the Melvins. It was so fun.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:45am sphere:

How were the Melvins?
  11:47am Will:

From "White Man's Hut" to Waffle Hut, is there something cosmic going on here (for me)?
  11:48am Polyus:

@coel - we don’t usually get it this early. I think next week will be more average, like 50s and dry. We did get 28” on Halloween one year, what a treat.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:49am TomDash:

Ridiculous guitar on this one! Thought it was Owen. But I was corrected - Henry Kaiser rips that lead...
  11:49am Polyus:

I think this is mostly because Trump was here last night.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:49am tim from champaign:

@Sphere - really good! Maybe the most straight forward rock I've seen them. Buzz walked on stage with a smile (?!?). It was the 5th time I've seen them and Steven McDonald was the 5th Melvins bass player I've seen.
  11:50am John from Florham park:

@Poly all the hot air right:)
  11:50am karen eliot:

this is amusing. so bad it’s good.
Avatar 11:53am Hubig Pie:

@Polyus, according to the NWS it was because of a negatively tilted low-pressure system. Today's afternoon activity will consist of some back country skiing
Avatar 11:54am coelacanth∅:
