Hello Irwin and devotees. That is one wicked piece of art you've posted.
I know requests are generally seen as gauche here at WFMU but boy, it would be nice to hear something by Thelonious Monk who, had he lived, would be 102 years old tomorrow!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:43pm Irwin:

Monk is a good request. I'll dig some up.

Very pretty! I just wonder how much Mr. Dasho had to hold his breath, and how he got the paint to stick underwater. Really good gesso, I guess.

As to meetings, ever notice that even if they're paid time away from harder work, they're still an annoying interruption in that work? I mean, even if it's unpleasant work you dislike, a meeting is worse.

Irwin, I don't mean to be a pest, but I know you're into drummers, so...Ginger Baker?
Avatar 4:09pm Avrilinmay:

à propos of earworms, this morning I heard Al Green's Love & Happiness on W&B, and I couldn't find for the life of me, after hours spent looking it up sporadically throughout the whole day, what other song has those few chords that play at the beginning and come back a few times around. Yet I swear it exists because I heard before ...
(in case a ginni is amongst us and would know it, it's none of those listed on whosampledit dot com nor shazam ..)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:11pm Irwin:

Jack: Baker meant little to me. Never cared for his playing. But I enjoyed the movie about him. What a dick.
  4:12pm ?:

Ginger Baker was a troglodyte. I never understood the all the fuss.

Frankie Dunlop, on the other hand . . .
Avatar 4:19pm Jack:

I always thought that Baker's "jazzier" drumming style made Cream a much more interesting power trio (and Jack Bruce; Clapton not so much) There was definately too much hype about his playing. The doc was good. In many ways he was a typical jazz drummer; lifelong junkie and alcoholic)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:20pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Amazing. Every one long a Standard.
Course - Monk was perhaps not entirely neuronormal...like a fox...

Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:24pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Loved Cream always. Even the Clapton part. Very much. Clapton needs to not be Solo...
Cream came exactly between The Who & the Jimi Hendrix Experience - both in History - & in Evolution...
Baker was not as fluid (...tho' he did have natural facility @ playing polyrythms...) nor as varied as either Moon or Mitchell (who were *very much* those things) - but he did have strenght & crazy endurance. & - his own Voice on the instrument. Just as he had his own Voice in everything...the definition of a Leo Monster...& Talent...
'BEWARE Mr. Baker'...he did hit the Filmaker inna face...
Avatar 4:25pm Jack:

Does that mean you're not going to play "Toad"?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:26pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

I'm always trying to get people to check The Ginger Baler Trio - right there w/ no less Maestros than Bill Frisell & Charlie Haden (! ! !). I think they provided a model for a different & very satisfying kind of Fusion. Really.

  4:57pm ignatatus666:

Joe said they can’t send him the Bumper sticker either. I’m seriously getting heated over this. I haven’t heard Beach from Ken. If that’s actually the case then Hoe should have said, hey sorry we can’t do either of those requests because we can’t figure out how to do a simple transfer of a donation. As well he should have sent the money back. I already had donated in my own name.
Sorry Irwin
I’m a little upset about some nonsense that’s important to some of us listeners

  5:02pm ignatatus666:

The worse part is that if I did not ask about the pumpkin icon not being on his profile I never would have known. They sent me a receipt with the exact request. So even after the explanation he gave about the icon he still didn’t say anything about the Bumper sticker until I further inquired. This is just a big turn off for me on the management of the fundraiser.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:03pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Joe McGasko generally the Good Cop for pledge snafus...no?
Havens not phoning it as usual...

  5:05pm ignatatus666:

It put me in a better mood
  5:05pm John from Florham park:

@iggy I don’t know what to say
Avatar 5:07pm coelacanth∅:

Havens was also excellent playing for free at a street festival in hoboken that i stumbled upon one beautiful afternoon in the 90s
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:07pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

@ig : Havens opened Woodstock when they weren't set up for electric bands yet.
He opened the movie, too - & since I was in public in 1980 on more acid than I understood watching it - he freaking melted me as well. Lennon was shot four days later...
Avatar 5:07pm flashbazbo:

I never have understood drumming. Can a great drummer be on bad material? Or a bad drummer on a great song? How is the worth of it calculated? I think that if I ever hear a very able drummer on a bad song I probably don't hear it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:08pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

'A bad band w/ a good drummer is an OK band.' - or variations...
  5:10pm brainiac:

The German lyric site, Songtexte.com says they cannot find the words to Third Stone From Cookieland Lyrics by Amanda
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:10pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Drummers keep Time. The Rhythm Section. Especially in these RawkaRolla Dance Musics & stuffs...
Beyond that - they can contribute to the Arrangement or Interpretation like anyone else.
Avatar 5:10pm coelacanth∅:

Charlie Watts, Buddy Miles, Moe Tucker...one fairly poor drummer and 2 poor ones appearing within good material.
Avatar 5:10pm Jack:

flashbazbo-a good creative drummer can make a song or a band much more interesting. A drummer is not there just to keep the beat. Some drummer keep good time, but are boring.
  5:11pm ignatatus666:

I played in a hardcore/punk band. Our drummer passed in a bike accident. We took in a punk who’s drumming was so bad I wouldn’t go on stage with him.
Avatar 5:11pm flashbazbo:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:12pm Phillippe Bastille:

Joe helped me out with a pledge issue in the past. I'm sure Ken is overloaded and probably started an e. coli epidemic
  5:12pm ignatatus666:

Watts as far as I have heard could keep great time and nothing more. Did I miss something?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:12pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

The entire Rolling Stones is a Rhythm Section.
Avatar 5:13pm Jack:

And some of it is a matter of taste; I never thought Neil Peart was that great a drummer.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:13pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Righteous flash !
Avatar 5:14pm coelacanth∅:

okay Watts was usually good. nothing special but good. sometimes his blunders were bad.
the other 2 just sucked.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:14pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Peart is *technically* great. Always thot of him as the Opposite of Moon - who is *expressively* great. & quite mad.
  5:14pm ignatatus666:

Joe is my snafu right now. It makes absolutely no sense how he handled this. I don’t mean to down the guy, but this situation was just wrong.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:16pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

I freaking love Mo Tucker. Mallets on trash cans. Totally original. The Velvets were Motorik before Synths even existed. Please.
Avatar 5:17pm coelacanth∅:

buddy rich shamed everybody that wasn't jazz because he was just that simple-minded. he made Baker seem like a sweetheart.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:17pm Irwin:

Very few rock drummers can credibly play jazz and vice versa. Generally true that a good band with a bad drummer is a bad band. One exception was the original Spirit, whose recorded legacy is supreme despite having one of the clumsiest drummers in rock, Ed Cassidy. He was reportedly a good jazz drummer, but he could not adapt to rock. His fills were mediocre, his solos atrocious.
Avatar 5:17pm Jack:

I don't think Bonham was technically a great drummer, but Led Zepplin with a jazz drummer? Nope. The Who with a jazzbo? No!
  5:18pm jan:

@flashbazbo: Doug Ingles of Iron Butterfly- answers the question in every way.
Avatar 5:18pm coelacanth∅:

she didn't do that because of some stroke of genius; she was unable to coordinate her feet with her arms at first.
  5:18pm brainiac:

Imma ax Joe if I can supply the station with AMANDA bumper stickers for the next pledge drive.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:18pm Phillippe Bastille:

I'm kind of a Sheila E guy, but I'm not a musician, so I'm kinda going on energy and appeal
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:19pm Irwin:

Best drummer I've seen in years: Gavin Wallace-Ailsworth of Bent Knee. Great band with a superlative drummer.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:19pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Well - Rich was smashing sh*t before The Who has pubic hair...
Good point about Jazz & Rawk Mr. I.C. ...
Drummer gotta match the Band - obviously where we're going ...
Bonham - had Power, Funk - & the Sound everybody wants from their kit & in the studio too. That's why he's Sampled constantly.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:19pm Irwin:

If you've never heard Bent Knee, they're like "The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway" with a better vocalist.
Avatar 5:19pm coelacanth∅:

Mitchell being one beautiful example of an exception. (@5.17)
Avatar 5:20pm Jack:

agreed Irwin. I feel the same way about John Densmore of the Doors. Also, Blind Faith would have been a tremendous group, if not for Mr. Baker.
  5:21pm ignatatus666:

This is a fun song
Keys are a bit low in volume
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:21pm Irwin:

Jack: Yep about Densmore. Ham-fisted.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:21pm Phillippe Bastille:

@ignatius666 Ah. Maybe Michele or Scott Williams can help? I know its frustrating to try to do something nice to pick up someone's spirit and have it derailed. Good luck.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:24pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Mitchell took the Revolution in Rawk Drumming that Moon had only just made - & brought Jazz chops & fluidity to it !
Absolutely under-recognized Musician. I mean - the Musician most compatible w/ & indispensable to Jimi Hendrix. Wow. Focus always on Jimi - understandably...
I'm rare round here - love the doors. Flamenco/Slide Gittar - Densmore from Jazz - Manzarek so talented - & that Frontman - I'm sorry - great Writer, Singer - & fairly notable Performer...quite a combo...
Drummer gotta fit Band.
Great Musicians don't always work together! Altho' many say that's one of the moral codes - that you should be up for that...
Avatar 5:24pm Fredericks:

Anyone heard that Master's of Reality album with Ginger Baker?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:24pm Ken From Hyde Park:

Maybe it's come time for another WFMU drummer panel discussion show, like the one EFD, Irwin, Dave Mandl & Dennis Diken did a few years back.
Avatar 5:24pm coelacanth∅:

Irwin i never did find that video you once mentioned of Bonham proving some diversity most of us are unaware of.
... and i'm curious what you think of Charlie Watts.
...and buddy rich. (who i think was boring and very limited in his scope)
  5:25pm ?:

re: Watts, I never thought there was much there, but as a drummer I have recently been focusing obsessively on tempo and how minute variations in pace and meter can profoundly alter whether a song is great or . . . not. I just listened to 'Fool to Cry', and the beat is very simple, but it is absolutely masterful in terms of pacing, tempo and feel
Avatar 5:25pm flashbazbo:

Jack: I do get that. A lot of drum talk seems to challenge me to imagine my favorite songs were not good enough because the drummer ruined it. My life's complicated enough. If I hear a bad drummer on a favorite song I have to imagine my mind compensates for it, just like optical nerves do, and other body parts that act to smooth things out.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:26pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Bonham went @ a kit w/ bare hands @ times...yerknow - he had that in him...& I'm a Whofan...
