welcome hams!
Avatar 12:08am sv:

waffle house sounds like heaven right now
  12:09am Marley Dogg:

I might just go to Waffle House then
  12:09am Marley Dogg:

Too bad I don’t have a mic
Avatar 12:10am Hams:

morning, sv. tuning in from kensington, brooklyn. about to hit the hay but will fall asleep with the radio faintly on.
Avatar 12:11am Hams:

no waffle houses in brooklyn.
Avatar 12:13am sv:

i'll play things for your dreams, hams - unfortunate fact of the northeast, the lack of waffle houses
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:14am Scraps:

Is it one of those very long Young pieces?
  12:14am ggold:

love this song
Avatar 12:15am Hams:

yep, i'm from athens, ga. plenty of waffles there this time of night. marley, don't forget the hashbrowns: scattered & smothered. and perhaps covered if you'd like.
Avatar 12:18am sv:

scraps, i played an excerpt of a 77 minute young piece
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:18am Scraps:

apparently not
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:19am Scraps:

very good!
Avatar 12:19am coelacanth∅:

greetings sv and nowhere people
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:19am Chop Scott:

Listening and enjoying in Brooklyn tonight--Cheers!
Avatar 12:20am sv:

hello hello coelacanth∅ and chop scott :)
  12:27am greatb:

hi one and all. what a lovely place 'nowhere' has turned out to be!
  12:28am rw:

How-dee! I have a copy of that La Monte Young CD. It's LONG. You couldn't have played the whole thing. I mean, unless there was some kind of time shift I wasn't aware of. Thinking about it, I remember my ex-wife hated that CD.
  12:31am greatb:

(Cajun Man voice) Improvisa-TION!
Avatar 12:32am sv:

i'm often tempted to do a show where i just play 3 hour-long pieces
  12:33am rw:

Hmmm... the pledge thingy seems not to be working. I'll get you next week. How many 3 hour long works can you fit into a three hour show?
Avatar 12:36am sv:

no worries, rw - i'm thinking i can get in at least one
  12:39am greatb:

any recent FMU DJs do 3-hour stretches? would be cool to see what pieces they chose
Avatar 12:40am sv:

not that i'm aware of but truly anything is possible here
  12:40am Blame:

Hey man, hope you’re having a good night
Avatar 12:41am coelacanth∅:

it's not uncommon for Bryce to play hour-long pieces
-maybe longer, but they're interrupted by the legal id.
Avatar 12:41am sv:

hey blame, thanks for joining us!
  12:41am greatb:

i guess the only drawback would be having to turn it down to work in the station ID
Avatar 12:42am sv:

the longest piece i've played in full was around 30 minutes or so i think
  12:42am rw:

I can't think of any three hour works off the top of my head, though I'm sure there are plenty.
  12:42am greatb:

john cage comes to mind
Avatar 12:43am coelacanth∅:

probably Jeff Mullen. definitely Stan has played tracks that exceeded an hour...
Avatar 12:43am coelacanth∅:

nurse with wound has a piece that extends over a few cds. ("salt")
Avatar 12:44am coelacanth∅:

Cecil Taylor and Miles Davis...
  12:44am rw:

I saw Philip Glass do Music in Twelve Parts. It came in at around four hours I think. There was a dinner break intermission.
  12:45am greatb:

Yeah been going through Stan's recent archives... he had one that was around 80-90 minutes in June/July
Avatar 12:47am coelacanth∅:

speaking of ...Stan played the entire necks track that Dan Bodah used to use for bed music ("clearwater"? -something like that)
which is over an hour. i don't think he interrupted it for the id either.
Avatar 12:48am sv:

badass \m/
Avatar 12:48am coelacanth∅:

greatb do you remember the artist?
Avatar 12:54am coelacanth∅:

soliloquy for lilith by nurse with wound is almost 107 minutes long. when it was released it got tons of airplay on fmu. i wonder if anyone played the whole thing
  12:55am greatb:

would have to look more closely coela. what does come to mind is a 53 minute Lee Ranaldo piece
Avatar 12:57am coelacanth∅:

i might go look for that. i don't miss not being able to sleep more than 2 hours/day; but i do miss Stan's show.
Avatar 1:01am coelacanth∅:

i could probably listen to this Steve Reich piece for over an hour
Avatar 1:01am sv:

fuckin gorgeous, just had my head done in by that
  1:01am greatb:

yeah i've missed Stan the last couple of weeks
  1:03am rw:

There's a Steve Reich performance scheduled for Disney Hall in LA next year. I was thinking about buying tickets but the works aren't my favorite. Still seats available but most of the good ones are gone. I sure hope I'm not making a big mistake.
Avatar 1:04am sv:

i'd really love to see works of his performed, only ever listened to recordings
  1:04am greatb:

yeah it's definitely worth it coela. it's in the June 21, 2019 Stan
  1:07am rw:

sv, you're not helping. I can get two okay seats together or a good seat by itself. I should get the two, right? I'll find someone who'd want to go by June. Not cheap but not expensive either.
  1:07am greatb:

met a dude who's seen "Music for 18 Musicians" like 24 times.
Avatar 1:07am coelacanth∅:

we all have our own tastes, but there are some Reich pieces i wouldn't care to sit through.
(and of course many that i'd love to)

...thanks greatb. bookmarked.
  1:08am greatb:

yeah I probably wouldn't sit through a live rendition of "It's Gonna Rain" (though it'd be cool)
Avatar 1:08am coelacanth∅:

...but of course there's no way to know if this will be your last opportunity to see Steve Reich.
  1:11am rw:

Double Sextet, Runner and the premier of a new work. I would totally sit through It's Gonna Rain! I don't think I've seen Music for 18, but it's a favorite. I'm sure I've listened to the record hundreds of times. I used to have a tape of it in the car.
  1:11am greatb:

He's beat Mick Jagger in longevity!
Avatar 1:12am coelacanth∅:

i still kick myself for not making it to see Rodelius at the college in my town, for free in fact, about 2 years ago. i hope he comes around in 5 years again...when he's 90 years old.
he probably wont.
  1:12am rw:

Okay, I'm getting the two tickets. You guys are a bad influence.
Avatar 1:14am sv:

* good influence (!)
Avatar 1:14am coelacanth∅:

man every one of these album covers is worthy art
  1:15am greatb:

yeah, my great aunt gave me a cassette of Great Trains / Electric Counterpoint
  1:17am rw:

I mean good influence! Now I'm just mad that I didn't get tix when there were better seats available. I'm excited though!!
  1:18am rw:

Now I just need a cool girlfriend. I've got until June...
Avatar 1:20am sv:

it'll be awesome, rw - envious!!
  1:22am rw:

Thanks man.

greatb, I sort of remember that one. It was with Pat Metheny, right? Did you like it? Play it in the car?
  1:24am greatb:

yes exactly rw, and it is a good car play!
  1:28am greatb:

I heard the Make-Up were reunited, might try to check out one of those dates
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:35am Z-pulpa:

I want to be a bee keeper, anyone know about bee keeping?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:00am Zetti:

Greetings friends. Much needed... thanks SV. Bee Keeping... Top bar Hives.
Avatar 2:01am sv:

hello zetti!
Avatar 2:02am sv:

i think you can contact a local apiarist and get involved with them - there are classes they teach that show you the ropes, then you can start buying equipment/bees
  2:03am johnzo:

my mom keeps bees. she says it's a lot of work.
  2:04am johnzo:

she took a class... they helped her get set up with the materials & stuff. part of the fee. maybe you could find a group like that, or just some random beekeeper in your neighborhood...
  2:05am johnzo:

or... youtube/trial by error...
  2:06am johnzo:

I believe she said that she does get stung sometimes... even with the protective gear. but i could be wrong.
Avatar 2:06am coelacanth∅:

i don't keep bees, i just hang out with them. the property i take care of has a beekeeper next door, so we've got lots of bees.
  2:07am johnzo:

anyone ever see one of those tiny bright metalic green bees? so cool.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:08am Zetti:

Bee info... Permies.com
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:08am Z-pulpa:

I am moving back to New Mexico where I grew up, and now that I am looking it seems like through the state beekeeping association I could find some guidance. I have never been to fearful of bee stings and the idea of having jars of fresh honey and relationship with a hive I think could suit me... just brain storming the future and bes are important part of the future it seems. Thanks for the input everyone!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:10am Z-pulpa:

Also. I am loving this track.
  2:11am rw:

Z, you should do it! If you don't like it I'm sure there's a way out. We had some neighbors with bee hives. I think my son's allergic so as long as you don't live next door to me.
  2:11am johnzo:

yup. you'd be doing the lord's work. er... Gaia's. and one hive can produce a surprising amount if honey too apparently.
  2:11am johnzo:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:12am Z-pulpa:

The only thing about the property my family has is its near the mountains and bears could be a concern.. Ill have to ask some folks with more knowledge about how worried to be about bigger hungry animals going after the honey.
  2:14am johnzo:

I know my mom has a fence around hers... I wanna say it's electric but I may be imagining that. Im not sure if it's for bears or other critters... tho I did get within about 20 feet of a bear not far from her house once(it ran away from me)
  2:15am rw:

A bunch of bees formed a basketball sized mass at work a few years ago. Evidently they were migrating and the queen got tired so they all swarmed around her for protection while she rested. It looked insane when they took off again. The whole courtyard was filled with bees! Somewhere I may have a photo...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:16am Z-pulpa:

rw, whoa that is amazing you got to be a witness!
  2:16am johnzo:

one time I saw a beekeeper remove a swarm of bees from one of those grills they have at public parks... it was fascinating. he used smoke.
  2:16am greatb:

then the worker bees form a union and the queen gets a revolving door wall street gig
Avatar 2:16am coelacanth∅:

i've been up to my chest, surrounded by blooming mint with hundreds (at least) of bees all around me and not gotten stung while working at a normal pace -pulling weeds and such.
i did get a warning once (in several years) because i'd inadvertently been rough with them. i just stepped back and came back to that spot later that day.
Avatar 2:17am coelacanth∅:

far out rw!
  2:17am greatb:

what form of warning?
  2:19am johnzo:

yea I had a similar experience cleaning up trash on my block... they were swarming around a bottle of barbecue sauce or something. I was able to take trash from all around them without getting stung somehow... just gotta be careful.
Avatar 2:21am coelacanth∅:

a couple of them flew around my face. maybe they were just checking me out but they never did that before, and i know i was being rough. i pulled some weeds that were tough and when i got 'em i whacked the mint pretty hard.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:22am Zetti:

Consider mason bee keeping, no honey but they are best pollinators.
  2:22am johnzo:

then I tried to show some friends this cool Wasp nest... which Ive been close to many times before... but this time one of them fell out of the nest, then got angry and stung my friend...
Avatar 2:23am coelacanth∅:

swarming around barbecue sauce sounds more like something yellowjackets would do
  2:23am johnzo:

also... bee talk aside, Ive been digging this set as well
  2:24am johnzo:

honestly yea, it could well have been yellowjackets
Avatar 2:25am coelacanth∅:

they're bastards!
  2:25am johnzo:

Im not too knowledgable when it comes to identifying bees. that metallic green one though... that was somethin' else
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:26am Z-pulpa:

these last few tracks feel Bee appropriate
Avatar 2:26am coelacanth∅:

i don't think i've seen those. are they in the northeast?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:28am Z-pulpa:

this set is reminding me of the electronic duo Port Said
  2:28am johnzo:

Im in MI... I never saw one before last summer & I lived in Vermont for several years but idk...
"The genus Agapostemon is a common group of Western Hemisphere sweat bees, most of which are known as metallic green sweat bees for their color. They are members of the family of bees known as Halictidae. Like other sweat bees, they are attracted to human sweat, and they use the salt from the sweat for nutrition."
Avatar 2:29am coelacanth∅:

wow those green bees like cool as hell!
... it might be the "green orchid bee", not native to this continent and invasive.
  2:29am greatb:

yellowjackets seem more aggressive and mean, no?
Avatar 2:30am coelacanth∅:

oh so that's different than the one my search just turned up
Avatar 2:30am sv:

yellowjackets are hella aggressive
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:30am brycepunk1:

okay, just tuned in. Something in my life just connected or cracked.. the fuck?
Avatar 2:30am sv:

loving the bee/wasp/hornet talk y'all, keep it up
Avatar 2:31am sv:

bryce, i like the sound of this cracking connection
  2:31am greatb:

hornets are nasty too... lotta 'tude in northeast bees
Avatar 2:32am coelacanth∅:

yellowjackets are wasps, and though i see many species of wasps on the flowers i rarely see yellowjackets on them. they like sugar, and meat.
  2:32am greatb:

especially when it gets time for the county fairs and the fried dough
  2:32am johnzo:

idk coel, could have been, it's hard to tell but I think the green orchid bees are a bit bigger? this one was real tiny
Avatar 2:33am coelacanth∅:

all those other wasps seem as docile as the bees, by my experience. the only ones i have a problem with are the yellowjackets and the white-faced hornets.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:35am brycepunk1:

sv, well played. I tip my hat.
  2:36am rw:

Time. Thanks SV! Take care all. Don't get stung!
  2:36am johnzo:

yup I think it was a klutzy white faced hornet that stung my friend... weird that they never seemed interested in me before. their nests are super cool
Avatar 2:36am coelacanth∅:

johnzo i'm going to explore this further...soon!
- the site i looked at is "what's that bug" (.com) it may not be the most accurate
  2:37am greatb:

what do the yellowjackets have against us?
Avatar 2:37am coelacanth∅:

gnight rw
  2:37am johnzo:

maybe they're drunk on barbecue sauce
Avatar 2:38am sv:

good night rw, thanks for tuning in :))
Avatar 2:38am sv:

thanks, bryce!
  2:38am johnzo:

anybody ever hear about when bees get drunk? on fermented... whatever... the other bees shun them I heard
Avatar 2:39am coelacanth∅:

it was a big paper nest? -on a tree branch or in the eves of a house? (that's what the hornets do. yellowjackets dig holes)
Avatar 2:39am sv:

in some cases bees will tear overly drunk/lazy bee's legs off to make an example off their slovenly brethren
  2:39am greatb:

i stepped on a wasp on the ground once and got jammed but that was my bad
Avatar 2:40am sv:

paper nests scare the shit out of me
Avatar 2:40am coelacanth∅:

there's a lot of pain packed into those things!
  2:41am greatb:

a bee temperance movement forms so then only bootleg bee liquor is available
Avatar 2:41am sv:

something so foreboding about their appearance too!
  2:41am johnzo:

yup coel. paper nest on a log. I added whatsthatbug.com to my favorites, thanks!

Avatar 2:42am coelacanth∅:

...i'm gonna have to tell my bee friends about these
  2:43am greatb:

shaking down bee pushcarts
Avatar 2:43am coelacanth∅:

so sv had you planned to play collections of colonies of bees?
  2:43am johnzo:

greatb, Im enjoying your insect based satyr/allegories, are you a member of the beehive collective by chance?
Avatar 2:45am sv:

coelacanth∅ i had indeed planned to play them. so very pleased that it assisted in generating this discussion
  2:46am johnzo:

*beehive design collective
Avatar 2:48am coelacanth∅:

oh i didn't notice you played it until after the bee discussion started
  2:48am greatb:

"I don’t care to belong to any club that will have me as a member"
Avatar 2:49am coelacanth∅:

"nobody goes to that hive anymore, it's too crowded."
  2:49am greatb:

that's where i see hornets, under the eaves of the house. the sunny side of the house. at night they calm down
  2:51am greatb:

what they don't understand, is they're parked next to the death star
Avatar 2:52am coelacanth∅:

my last dwelling was the 3rd floor of an old house and i'd go out on the fire escape sometimes but there was the ever-present wasp nest a few feet above me, in the very top of the eves.
Avatar 2:54am coelacanth∅:

(black wasps; not very aggresive...but you shouldn't move too suddenly)
  2:55am greatb:

that's where all the cool wasps go
Avatar 2:56am coelacanth∅:

yeah when i looked at it up close i saw a little sign over the entrance that said "sugar shack"
Avatar 2:59am sv:

thanks y'all <3
Avatar 2:59am coelacanth∅:

Thanks SV!
-most excellent!
'night y'all
  2:59am johnzo:

did you say Coral music?! enough bee talk, let's talk reefs!
  3:00am greatb:

thank you SV!
