The core of Big Planet Noise was formed when Bob Irwin was just 5 years old. The day he picked up his first 45, the whole thing set to spinning – and records and music have been pretty much all he’s thought about ever since. Avocation eventually became vocation, leading to Sundazed Music and Modern Harmonic, all drawing inspiration from Bob’s legendary collection. But, what good is having so many records if no-one else can hear them with you?

Big Planet Noise is Bob’s way of inviting everyone over to hang out in the music room while he and co-host Gina Bacon flip through the stacks and play great records. And – the BPN chat room is where the action is… they yak about what’s on the turntable, tell stories, backstories, and share what was had for dinner, friends ’n family style. Gina keeps the celestial orbit steady-as-it-goes; making sure the stylus stays in the groove, the stacks don’t teeter and the drinks don’t spill all over the console. NB: Gina can also be heard on Saturday afternoons as the host of Someday Matinee (also on WFMU's Give The Drummer Radio stream), a show filled with live musical performances and artist interviews, direct from Music City.

There’s a reason it’s called Big Planet Noise… the show covers a lot of musical ground; familiar, forgotten, unheralded, unheard… The sonic menu is ever-changing; you’ll hear oddball teens, psychedelic wizards, mod lads, sitar savants, space-cadets, groovy soundtracks, and maybe even some bossa nova, when it feels right.

My pal Chris Capece at Discs Du Monde in NYC was a HUGE help in the 70's. He used to say "Just buy this!" to me ALL the time!!!
  8:38pm Eargasm!:

I bought so much from them via Goldmine ads!
Avatar 8:38pm bigplanetnoise:

OK - things have settled. Let me go look at Alex's dinner.

Avatar 8:40pm bigplanetnoise:

Avatar 8:43pm bigplanetnoise:

I'm always here for Tremeloes Every Week, Bob, trash pickup be damned! Thanks!
Avatar 8:46pm bigplanetnoise:

Mailman - I've got some cool tunes for you comin' up!!!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:48pm Gaylord Fields:

It's almost as if Decca was right in picking the Trems over the Beatles [looks furtively over shoulder for Matt Clarke to appear].
  8:49pm Dolemite:

Kinks rule ok
  8:49pm CC:

I love Beatle chords!!!
Avatar 8:50pm Mailman Tom:

I'll be all ears, Bob!
  8:51pm joedz:

I actually saw the Kinks musical "Sunny Afternoon" in London, don't think there was ever a production of it in the US.
  8:51pm CC:

I love that song stop stop stop all the dancing by The Hollies I wonder if there are any alternate takes of that!?!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:53pm Gina Bacon:

Avatar 8:53pm bigplanetnoise:

Avatar 8:53pm bigplanetnoise:

Joedz - when was that???
Avatar 8:54pm Mailman Tom:

I saw NRBQ twice. Both great shows!
  8:54pm joedz:

Very cool NRBQ track - there was a promo 45 of this with a picture sleeve.
Avatar 8:54pm bigplanetnoise:

CC - I've never seen an outtake of that Hollies tune....
  8:54pm Doug in Boston:

Hoo Boy, Hojo's! Haven't heard this one since high school, on Boston's legendary, now gone, underground FM station, WBCN.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:55pm TheNewLexGofer:

NRBQ is fantastic in concert!
  8:55pm joedz:

I saw the Kinks musical in the fall of 2015.
Avatar 8:55pm bigplanetnoise:

Mailman - I saw em more than any other band ever. Best I can count, between 40-50 times!!!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:56pm Gaylord Fields:

I once saw NRBQ kill it on "Hold Me Tight" — one of the weakest songs in the Beatles' esteemed canon, IMO.
Avatar 8:56pm bigplanetnoise:

Joedz - never saw the sleeve! Send me yours!!!!
Avatar 8:56pm bigplanetnoise:

Gaylord - really??? Wow - I'd sure have loved to have seen that!!!!
  8:57pm joedz:

Friend of mine saw NRBQ when they were the house band at a little venue outside of Poughkeepsie and had an opening band called the Dickens (who cut a 45 on Scepter that was quickly withdrawn)
  8:58pm CC:

I bet that boy must be sitting on a bale of hay!!!...:)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:58pm Gaylord Fields:

It was unexpected and glorious, like so much of what the Q do!
Avatar 8:58pm bigplanetnoise:

Doug - Eargasm and I sure would agree about how much we loved BCN!!!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:59pm Gaylord Fields:

Bob, last week we were talking about when a band is named after someone who is not the singer, and now you play the Elvin Bishop Group!
Avatar 8:59pm bigplanetnoise:

Joedz - Terry Adams himself gave me a copy of the Dickens 45! It was NRBQ's roadies, with a little help from the band!!!!!!!
Avatar 8:59pm Mailman Tom:

Butterfield was such a goddamn powerhouse!
Avatar 9:00pm bigplanetnoise:

Gaylord - except that one actually WAS Elvin singing! But - I know what you mean!!!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:01pm Gaylord Fields:

I was just going to say, except when he did sing. Me and my fast sending finger!
  9:01pm joedz:

Bob - glad you have the Dickens 45, I have one too but it wasn't exactly free for me. BTW the NRBQ picture sleeve is basically a copy of the Scraps album cover.
Avatar 9:01pm coelacanth∅:

greetings Bob & Gina and big Planet People
Avatar 9:01pm Julie P.:

I think I saw something somewhere about an Elvin Bishop exemption to that rule. ;)
Avatar 9:02pm bigplanetnoise:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:05pm Gina Bacon:

Avatar 9:05pm bigplanetnoise:

Avatar 9:05pm coelacanth∅:

yeah me too
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:05pm Gina Bacon:

Can we order in, Bob?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:06pm Gaylord Fields:

If you ask me, Canned Heat are still riding the coattails of their labelmates the Chipmunks.

Avatar 9:06pm bigplanetnoise:

Jorma! Jorma! Jorma!
Avatar 9:23pm AlexClarkCaprio:

Liz's dad got me this album for my birthday, couldn't get into it. But I like this song
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:23pm Gaylord Fields:

Glynis, does your cat also like Hot Tuna?
Avatar 9:23pm Snayle:

Cats love … TUNA !
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:24pm Gaylord Fields:

@Snayle: JINX!!!
Avatar 9:24pm Snayle:

Avatar 9:25pm bigplanetnoise:

Alex - Hot Tuna is soooo great. Buckle in and go again.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:25pm Gaylord Fields:

@Snayle: As they say in the fashion mags, you wore it better.
Avatar 9:26pm Mailman Tom:

Went to see Hot Tuna 6 times!
Avatar 9:26pm bigplanetnoise:

I knew you saw them, Mailman!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:26pm TheNewLexGofer:

Hot Tuna is playing at Jorma's Fur Peace Ranch in Meigs County, OH on Nov. 9. Sold out, dammit!
  9:27pm Jay S.:

Avatar 9:27pm bigplanetnoise:

Have you ever been there, NewLex???
Avatar 9:27pm AlexClarkCaprio:

However, Liz's uncle gave me "Frampton Comes Alive"
That record is garbage
Avatar 9:27pm bigplanetnoise:

Jay - which? Procol???
  9:28pm Jay S.:

Avatar 9:28pm bigplanetnoise:

Alex - I saw Frampton two months before that album came out and it was one of the best shows I ever saw.
  9:28pm joedz:

B side of In the wee small hours of sixpence - great track!
Avatar 9:29pm bigplanetnoise:

Yeah - one of my fave Procol songs!
Avatar 9:30pm bigplanetnoise:

Busy drummer
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:31pm Gaylord Fields:

Whenever "Show Me the Way" would play on WABC in 1975 (which was constantly), I was all in! Love(d) that song, and love(d) that goofy Talk Box!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:31pm TheNewLexGofer:

No, Mailman. In fact, I didn't know they had concerts there until earlier this year; I thought it was a music school, more or less.
  9:31pm joedz:

Bob - I saw Frampton at the old Palace Theater in Albany in 1976. Same show as you perhaps?
  9:31pm Eargasm!:

Very busy drummer!
Avatar 9:32pm bigplanetnoise:

Joedz - that's exactly right!!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:32pm TheNewLexGofer:

Oops, sorry, Bob. Thought it was Mailman who asked the question.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:32pm Gaylord Fields:

Or was it 1976 that was the Year of Frampton? Yeah, it was '76.
Avatar 9:32pm bigplanetnoise:

Joedz - I was the house photographer at the time!
Avatar 9:33pm Mailman Tom:

We went to see Frampton at Staples High School in Westport, CT, months before his album came out. It was a great show!
Avatar 9:34pm bigplanetnoise:

It was a super-great show, Mailman!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:35pm Gaylord Fields:

Of all the musicians named after the four cardinal directions, which compass point has the best ones? I gotta go with West (and that's without giving an opinion on Kanye). Sorry, Joe South.
Avatar 9:36pm bigplanetnoise:

I dunno. I had a Jay North LP when I was a kid.....
  9:36pm CC:

I loved it when Peter and Steve were trying to get along!!!
Avatar 9:37pm bigplanetnoise:

CC - did they not get along?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:37pm Gaylord Fields:

I was hoping you'd bring up Jay North! That makes it close, but not quite.
  9:37pm Doug in Boston:

I'm TASTE-ing some gin and orange with this one!
Avatar 9:38pm Mailman Tom:

Dennis the Menace, one of the worst television shows of all time.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:39pm TheNewLexGofer:

Had to change my avatar for this one!
Avatar 9:39pm bigplanetnoise:

This song is just so weirdly great - and felt so out of place on a Taste album! I think that's why I love it so much.
Avatar 9:40pm bigplanetnoise:

NexLex - AMAZING!!!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:40pm Gina Bacon:

  9:40pm CC:

oh no...I didn't mean for it to sound like that' Bob... I just always wonder about some things???...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:40pm Gaylord Fields:

@Mailman Tom: Perhaps, but I gotta give them this: Dennis' dad, and the 2nd Mr. Wilson (Gale Gordon) looked EXACTLY like the comic strip characters. So that must count for something.
Avatar 9:40pm bigplanetnoise:

Doug - you're prob right!!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:41pm Gina Bacon:

Adam West sang as Batman a couple of times. Not sure where that puts him name-wise.
  9:41pm Eargasm!:

I always thought the same thing, BPN. So weirdly out of place
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:42pm Gaylord Fields:

And Gina, I'm a semi-proud owner of Mae West's "Way Out West" LP.
Avatar 9:42pm coelacanth∅:

some good bands with "east" in the names
  9:43pm CC:

You know like Peter Gabriel and Phil Collins Steve Winwood and Dave Mason etc...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:43pm Gaylord Fields:

@coelacanth∅: And you can't neglect Southwest F.O.B.!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:44pm Gina Bacon:

I'd love to hear that one, Gaylord.
  9:45pm joedz:

the one and only WITW 45!
Avatar 9:45pm bigplanetnoise:

Herbert Anderson - Dennis the Menace's dad, had a role in the first Hermit's movie, "Hold On!" He was a lovable fellow.
Avatar 9:46pm Mailman Tom:

My buddy and I skipped school in 1968 in order to go see the Wind in the Willows play for free in Central Park NYC.
Avatar 9:46pm AlexClarkCaprio:

Reminds me of Birmingham Sunday
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:46pm Gaylord Fields:

Surprised Bob hasn't worked on reissuing "Way Out West". I'm sure Ian Whitcomb can dig up the masters.
Avatar 9:47pm bigplanetnoise:

I've got to go back to that Birmingham Sunday LP - it always left me a little cold....
Avatar 9:47pm bigplanetnoise:

I like parts of that album, Gaylord!!! Universal has (errr...had) the masters....
  9:47pm Dolemite:

Is Hold On as bad as Having A Wild Weekend?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:47pm Gaylord Fields:

All roads eventually lead back to Herman's Hermits on the BPN chat board!
Avatar 9:48pm bigplanetnoise:

Oh, Dolemite - that's a BIG subject with me. I LOVE "Having A Wild Weekend" - I think it's incredible!!!!
  9:49pm CC:

Overtones of great Ulysses by Cream..?..
  9:49pm Doug in Boston:

Ian Whitcomb is recovering from surgery.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:49pm Gaylord Fields:

Bob, "Shakin' All Over" takes on an unfortunate meaning when sung by a septugenarian.
Avatar 9:49pm Mailman Tom:

Ultimate Spinach could've used a better looking album cover.
Avatar 9:49pm AlexClarkCaprio:

Birmingham Sunday was part of my soundtrack for when I moved back from LA and was couch surfing and not really working. I spent a lot of time reading about psych bands and downloading their stuff (also bands like Golden Dawn, Growing Concern, Pisces, Plastic Cloud, Andwellas Dream, and more)
Avatar 9:49pm bigplanetnoise:

Doug - really? Is he ok?
  9:50pm Eargasm!:

It's incredible that the Ultimate Spinach and other "Boss Town ' records were so disparaged in their day.
And of course I love having A Wild Weekend as well!
Avatar 9:50pm bigplanetnoise:

Gaylord - hahahaha!
  9:50pm Doug in Boston:

Slow recovery, apparently. https://www.gofundme.com/f/getting-ian-well
Avatar 9:51pm bigplanetnoise:

Mailman - drawn on butcher paper with a flair pen???? What's wrong with that?!?!?!
Avatar 9:51pm Julie P.:

Wild Weekend gets a thumbs up from me as well.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:51pm Gaylord Fields:

@Dolemite: "Hold On" stinks to high heaven, but I like it anyway.
Avatar 9:51pm bigplanetnoise:

As do I. I love ALL of those movies.
Avatar 9:52pm Julie P.:

Association every week!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:52pm Gaylord Fields:

What I like about "Wild Weekend"" is that it's "A Hard Day's Night" + bleak British kitchen sink realism.
Avatar 9:53pm Julie P.:

Aaaaand cue the sitar!
  9:53pm Dolemite:

No bigger Mike Clark fan than me; I’ll have to try again. AHDN set the bar so freakin high that no one could even measure up. IMO.
Avatar 9:53pm bigplanetnoise:

You bet!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:53pm Gaylord Fields:

BPN last half hour sitar!
Avatar 9:54pm bigplanetnoise:

It is!!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:54pm Gina Bacon:

Sitar every week!!!
Avatar 9:54pm bigplanetnoise:

We might have to go a few minutes long to get it all in tonight.....
  9:54pm Jay S.:

Just have to wonder what the kids in the theater were thinking, expecting another AHDN-type romp and getting HAWW instead.
Avatar 9:54pm Julie P.:

Yay for going long!
Avatar 9:55pm Snayle:

OH MY -long just like a Ravi Shankar raga …?
Avatar 9:55pm bigplanetnoise:

I'm tempted to play a full Ravi raga one of these weeks.....
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:56pm Gaylord Fields:

HAWW is more enjoyable when you don't compare it to AHDN, because it will fail that comparison. But it is just as ambitious in its own dour way, in contrast to all the cheapo pop exploitation flicks made by its contemporaries.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:56pm Gaylord Fields:

Top 5 Beach Boys song! And they all play on it!!
Avatar 9:57pm Julie P.:

Still waiting for the long version of In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida, Bob! ;)
Avatar 9:57pm bigplanetnoise:

Exactly right about HAWW, Gaylord.
  9:57pm Doug in Boston:

Brian has reportedly been a bit wobbly and disengaged since his return to the stage for this tour, but I will be seeing him with the Zombies on Thursday in NYC.
Avatar 9:57pm bigplanetnoise:

I will do it, Julie!!!!
  9:57pm CC:

Brian still does okay on vocals!!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:58pm Gina Bacon:

Lucky, Doug!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:58pm Gaylord Fields:

I have called Carl's guitar solo on SKMTW my second favorite of all time, and I was being dead serious.
Avatar 9:58pm Julie P.:

  9:58pm Dolemite:

Interesting... will def watch again. FWIW, I think Help! is pretty rank also.
Avatar 9:58pm bigplanetnoise:

Gaylord - I said the exact same thing to Gina!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:58pm Gaylord Fields:

IS GODD!!!!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:59pm Gina Bacon:

It's true, Gaylord...he did!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:59pm Gaylord Fields:

We're birds of a feather, Bob!
Avatar 9:59pm bigplanetnoise:

It's the perfect sound of a clean Jaguar through a Fender amp!
  10:00pm Dolemite:

Avatar 10:00pm Snayle:

Brian and Zombies at the Beacon Theater, NYC this weekend. "Something Great from 68" tour
Avatar 10:00pm bigplanetnoise:

Snayle - you gotta go!!!!
  10:00pm Eargasm!:

That should be a fun show.
Avatar 10:00pm bigplanetnoise:

Dolemite - for sure!
Avatar 10:00pm coelacanth∅:

Gaylord, and the first favorite?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:01pm Gaylord Fields:

It really has everything a solo should, and nothing it doesn't. My other all-time favorite solo is Lou Reed's in "I'm Set Free."
Avatar 10:01pm Julie P.:

Yes, Snayle! You gotta go!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:01pm Gaylord Fields:

@coelacanth∅: See above.
Avatar 10:02pm coelacanth∅:

that's an incredible song Gaylord. weird though, i never thought of it as a solo
Avatar 10:02pm AlexClarkCaprio:

Thanks again Bob and Gina
Avatar 10:02pm Snayle:

Should be fun. Early work on Saturday mornings kill Friday fun. good seats are nearly $150. ouch
  10:03pm Jay S.:

Here's to 167 more! Thanks Bob and Gina!
  10:03pm CC:

Great tunes for sure!!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:03pm Gaylord Fields:

  10:05pm Eargasm!:

Another perfect show! Thanks for thee coolest night of the week!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:05pm Gina Bacon:

Avatar 10:05pm bigplanetnoise:

Avatar 10:05pm coelacanth∅:

Thanks Gina! Thanks Bob!
take care y'all
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:53pm nostrangerer:

Listened and relistened to this. 166 more to go. One personal footnote, I was reminded of my regret for alienating a friend over 45 years ago by my not accepting that his dedication to The Ultimate Spinach was just as significant as mine to Velvet Underground and Capt. Beefheart.
