@EFD thanks

I could go for a couple hours of The Cars and other R.O. material, but sad it's under these circumstances.

Oh yeah

Here we go . Thanks Evan !

  9:09pm van chinski:

Sad for the reason, but looking forward to the show. Candy-O is a favorite!
  9:09pm ratty:

i'm on mexican radio?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:11pm Bootsie:

I was hoping for some Suicide and Vega tracks!
  9:11pm Third World Man:

Candy O was the first album I purchased with my own cash from mowing lawns but I actually went to buy the First Album and didn't know a new one was out. SO I had to mow more lawns. 8 Tracks both. Very underrated format.
  9:13pm P-90:

I don’t know that I’ve ever heard this demo
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:13pm Alex of Chicago:

mmm, mmm, mmm...
  9:13pm Figgsrock:

Those Cars reissues of the past few years had some solid bonus tracks. This demo was an excellent choice EFD.
  9:14pm Third World Man:

Very pleased they had the chance to make one last album as the Cars
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:16pm efd:

ha, first tech flub of the night. Probably not the last.

  9:17pm Li'l Funk:

Now I want to hear the Bye Bye Love demo!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:18pm Bootsie:

I know "underrated" is an overused word, but I definitely think Panorama was underrated.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:18pm Bootsie:

@Li'l Funk, me, too!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:19pm Kat in Chicago:

I always liked "Gimme Some Slack", it sounded so weird at the time!
Avatar 9:20pm JakeGould:

When I think of junior high school, I think “Shake It Up.”
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:21pm Kat in Chicago:

I remember Panorama didn't get very good reviews
Avatar 9:23pm JakeGould:

“Panorama” was in every “Nice Price” bin ever.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:23pm jmd:

Enjoying and looking forward to the show, technical errors and all. Bye, Ric.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:23pm efd:

damn them and their tight transitions!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:25pm Bootsie:

I had Panorama on 8-track!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:25pm Fuzzy:

But Panorama has "Touch and Go," one of my fave Cars tracks! High School memories!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:25pm Bootsie:

@Kat I liked it, too. Still do!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:26pm Bootsie:

Wow, I like "Heartbeat City" a lot better in retrospect.
  9:27pm phat:

Heartbeat City is my favorite off that album.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:27pm Bootsie:

@Fuzzy, yes, another gem!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:27pm jmd:

The only song that wasn’t played into the ground from HB City.

Perfection so far. No surprise.
  9:33pm dug:

thanks for the cars set.

WBCN, whos this? this is brad adams.
  9:36pm phat:

they got a lot of airplay on WAAF when I lived in Western MA in the 80s, too.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:37pm patrick321:

  9:38pm P-90:

Really fine first set!
  9:38pm sweetpurplejune:

Panorama is my all-time fave!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:41pm Fuzzy:

An Ohio-Massachusetts mix, like Pixies.
  9:46pm Figgsrock:

The “Hello Again” video directed by Andy Warhol is excellent, as is the remix on the expanded edition of Heartbeat City.
  9:48pm Third World Man:

Ric and Phil Lesh look like brothers.
  9:50pm Third World Man:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:57pm Bootsie:

@Jake that's a cool bit of trivia!
  9:58pm EJ @ Loudersoft:

I'm curious about this quote attributed to Ric about people not understanding them. They always seemed so cool and calculated, what could he have meant?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:59pm Bootsie:

My song!! And a version I've not heard before, to boot! :-D
Avatar 10:00pm JakeGould:

@Bootsie: And “Hello Again” was directed by Andy Warhol. He also plays a bartender in the video. And the opening “Rocktalk” is great, “Phallic symbols… Big buildings look like phallic symbols…”
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:03pm Bootsie:

@Jake I think I remember seeing that!
Avatar 10:08pm JakeGould:

And here is Ric Ocasek and Pia Zadora as Beatniks in “Hairspray.” youtu.be...
  10:09pm Third World Man:

This sounds like something on Panorama
Avatar 10:10pm RobinSays:

Any song that mentions Fiorucci is awesome in my book. Love Ric Ocasek and The Cars. Stellar show Evan!
  10:12pm Motobro:

That Slipaway is a classic. I actually forgot about it until now.
Thanks for the brain jarr Evan.

I have the complete Rolling Stone Installed on my PC. If anyone wants PDFs of the Cars Cover issues, request my email and I will forward.
  10:25pm charles laquidera:

Duane Ignalls is listening and in tears
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:25pm Bootsie:

The only time I actually got to see Ric live was when he played with Suicide at the Limelight. What a fab surprise THAT was!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:26pm Bootsie:

@ Loudersoft, Thanks for the tip!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:27pm Bootsie:

@Third World Man, I'd love a copy, thanks! Will message you. :-)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:28pm drowsy:

Did not know RO had a hand in this one. Very cool.
  10:28pm steveL:

The Cars eponymous album, in my view, a nearly perfect rock album. Lush and sparse, top level pop lyrics, all great.

ROMEO VOID!!!!!!!!’
  10:30pm cee dubbles:

my better half spent the entire 9/19/93 Dylan Supper Club show jammed into Ric's ribs, Paulina tucked under his other arm
Avatar 10:31pm loudersoft:

There are a world of songs I don't think people realize Ric produced & as you dig deeper into discographies you discover songs by Cake Like and Guided By Voices and Stratford 4 (as Evan mentioned) and so on. The look on people's faces when they learn he produced two seminal Bad Brains albums is priceless.
  10:32pm steveL:

  10:42pm phillippe bastille:

thanks for putting this together efd, I'm sure it was a lot of work. I'll catch the rest on the archive.drive on everybody!

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:49pm efd:

thanks meds and thanks everyone, juggling a lot tonight so not able to comment as much but I'm enjoying reading them at least!
  10:51pm Carmichael:

Heya Evan, this is awesome. The Cars may have been a bit droll live, but their music lives on in high fi stereo.
Avatar 10:51pm dB from Oakland:

Hi everybody, just joining in, but "It's All I Can Do" is a beautiful, beautiful song. Hi everybody.
  10:54pm sweetpurplejune:

Deep cut -- love it! "Let's never answer the novelty knock."
  10:57pm Ojai John:

Great interviews. Learning a bunch and appreciating Ocasek more.
  11:00pm Joe:

The “wait he did that ?” Discovery for me is the Iggy Pop track Fire Engine. Which is basically Iggy fronting Ministry with Ric producing.
  11:03pm Carmichael:

You cant play everything, but moving in stereo is epic.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:07pm Bootsie:

Ok I'm making a break for it. Fantastic tribute, Evan! Looking forward to catching up on the archive tomorrow. The Cars — along with Sparks — were basically my intro into alternative Music, back when alternative meant something totally different than it does now. And I love both to this day. Thanks again for this show. G'night, all!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:10pm efd:

@Carm you'll hear that before the night is out
  11:10pm P-90:

The joke (?) about Roy Thomas Baker in the record business is that inevitably the drums sound the same on all his records. (The drums, not the drumming)
Avatar 11:10pm dB from Oakland:

I've never gotten any traction on this theory, but I'm pretty sure Ric used this song as a jumping-off point for "Just What I Needed" www.youtube.com...
  11:11pm steveL:

These demos are pretty fully realized. You’d think the guy was a good producer.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:11pm Kat in Chicago:

Yay, my ears are craving Moving in Stereo too
Avatar 11:12pm dB from Oakland:

... the song I just posted is "yummy yummy yummy" by the 1910 fruit gum company. The borrowed part is just the opening riff ...
Avatar 11:14pm dB from Oakland:

... another opening bit i noticed in the last couple of days is the drum intro to "Gimme Some Slack", which is an amazing song. But I think Ric riffed on devo's drum opener from "Whipit" to start that song off
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:14pm medson:

@carmichael yes it is.
  11:15pm steveL:

“So bleed me.” So punk.
  11:15pm Danne D:

hey EFD and everyone!

RIP to a legendary talent :(
  11:15pm McGreivey:

It's interesting how the demo isn't really missing anything, but the RTB version just has more if it.
  11:16pm steveL:

Moving In Stereo is a strong contributor to the best-album thing.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:17pm Fuzzy:

A sexy song that isn't about sex. Hi Phoebe!
  11:17pm Motobro:

D Generation, No Way Out
is AA, love it.
  11:18pm Joe:

Give the man credit he took an already amazing band in D Generation and made him just a little bit better with out us not even really noticing he did it
  11:18pm Joe:

Them not him better
Avatar 11:20pm JakeGould:

Just reading up on something I might have shared on this show in the past: Elliot Gilbert, the artist who designed the Cars’ first album cover. He also did the first Van Halen album cover. www.coverourtracks.com...
  11:25pm Ojai John:

Pardon the mono recording but I grabbed this “Moving in Stereo” In 1982 at the US Festival.
  11:25pm neilwarren:

Our band covered a bunch of Cars songs, including “Gimme some Slack” and “Touch and Go”, in the 80s. Boy does this bring back memories!
  11:25pm Carmichael:

@efd, ya buddy!
  11:28pm Carmichael:

The verse guitar sound to Best Friends Girl was lifted completely from the Beatles I Will.
  11:30pm the noggin:

who's on the phone right now?
  11:31pm Carmichael:

Danny Sage from D Generation.
  11:33pm zenkoan:

Did I miss "Drive", or are you saving it for last?
  11:34pm steveL:

Jake: Very cool! Life goes on, but I miss good album covers. That guy was strong.
  11:34pm Danne D:

Thanks so much for this Evan. An incredible job making a show that's such a worthy tribute to such an immense talent.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:34pm efd:

I gotta say, "Drive" is ...not guaranteed
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:34pm medson:

this is one of my all time fav cars songs
  11:36pm Carmichael:

Elliott Easton is left handed. Just sayin’ ...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:36pm Fuzzy:

  11:36pm steveL:

Such great songs.
  11:37pm Joe:

What I also found really cool was how much he worked with Darryl Jennifer outside of Bad Brains.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:38pm Fuzzy:

But Elliott Easton is an awesome guitar player. #NotMe
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:39pm efd:

Easton is amazing, and overshadowed by O&O I think
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:39pm Alex of Chicago:

I love bye bye
Avatar 11:39pm dB from Oakland:

you think you'r so illustrious, you call yourself intense
  11:39pm Carmichael:

That was a guitar player joke.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:40pm Fuzzy:

Only because he doesn't sing lead.
Avatar 11:40pm dB from Oakland:

always it's some other guy
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:41pm Fuzzy:

  11:41pm zenkoan:

Aw c'mon--"Drive" is great in its own, over the top way. And a significant part of the Cars legacy.
Let's do hear the studio version of "Bye Bye Love" after the demo--that's my big fave
  11:41pm P-90:

Interesting how the Bye Bye demo sounds just a bit more Talking Heads-ish
Avatar 11:41pm dB from Oakland:

it's an orange-ade sky
  11:41pm Carmichael:

His playing was a little plowed under, IMO. Producers ...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:42pm Kat in Chicago:

that's a good observation P-90
  11:42pm steveL:

Almost note on.
  11:43pm steveL:

Demo to album on Bye bye
  11:45pm Third World Man:

What was the problem with the Door to Door album? I think it was fine, just not another Heartbreak City.
  11:45pm Gaylord Fields:

Thanks for the Ian Lloyd “driveway moment,” efd! I just may be stuck in my car for the duration of your show.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:46pm efd:

@Third World honestly I'm just not very familiar with it. In fact I just picked it up earlier this year!
  11:47pm Motobro:

Great show and tribute. Goodnight.

Thank you Evan.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:48pm efd:

ha, my pleasure Gaylord!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:48pm chad from oregon:

The Door To Door title track is a stomper.
  11:49pm Danne D:

EFD is a good man :)
  11:49pm steveL:

You sly motherfucker
  11:50pm Carmichael:

You gave in, Evan HA HA
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:50pm Alex of Chicago:

yeah, that's how it had to end
  11:50pm steveL:

Also, Dianne D said.
Avatar 11:50pm dB from Oakland:

who gonna drive me home tonight
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:50pm efd:

I do like how he wrote this monster hit and gave it to Ben Orr to sing
  11:50pm steveL:

You know what I mean.
  11:51pm steveL:

I remember this video being a big deal.
  11:52pm Joe:

This has been great. This was one of those passing I did feel the punch in the gut to hear. Thank you so much EFD. As I said second to none.
Avatar 11:52pm BrassKnuckles:

I remember why some blonde guy was singing instead of Ric. I didn't know the bassist sang on a lot of their hits.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:53pm Fuzzy:

Hi Brad...
  11:53pm Carmichael:

  11:53pm Third World Man:

Every Cars fan needs to relisten to Door to Door. It's the Cars trying to be a band after their "Back In Black" sample to death period. It's a solid album with no filler. It's just not the Cars or Candy O. I find it better than heartbreak City in consistency.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:53pm medson:

@efd didn't you once say you've never seen Fast Times?
  11:55pm P-90:

Awesome RO special show tonight, even before considering how astonishingly little time there was to put it together. Bravo, Dude.
  11:55pm Joe:

As much as I love Fast Times I have made it my personal mission to get people to listen to the greatness of this song outside of its intro.
  11:55pm Third World Man:

EFD I now have my own show locally for four hours locally you and three other FMU DJ's are my influences. I just wanted you to know.
  11:55pm steveL:

Ben Oor had the smooth melodic voice. Might have made the difference.

So many good songs!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:55pm efd:

@medson I don't recall saying that but it's true that I haven't seen it
  11:55pm Carmichael:

If you want some good Easton, listen to Touch and Go.
  11:56pm Spicoli-bro:

Oh yeah dude! This is a radical tubation ride.
  11:56pm Third World Man:

easily the best produced Cars Track
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:56pm Fuzzy:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:56pm efd:

  11:58pm steveL:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:59pm Ken From Hyde Park:

Thanks, efd. Quite a lot of ground covered tonight. Will miss Ric Ocasek. Glad you're ending with this pair. I like how the songs on this album fit together, one after the next.
Avatar 11:59pm jt:

Thanks for this tribute - well done.
  11:59pm Carmichael:

I love he sings Itsallmixedup, all at once
  11:59pm P-90:

Poor Eddie Money’s tribute got completely blown off the map by a much bigger star’s. “Story of my life...” he’d say.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:59pm Alex of Chicago:

Thanks, EFD!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:59pm Fuzzy:

I didn't do it!
