The core of Big Planet Noise was formed when Bob Irwin was just 5 years old. The day he picked up his first 45, the whole thing set to spinning – and records and music have been pretty much all he’s thought about ever since. Avocation eventually became vocation, leading to Sundazed Music and Modern Harmonic, all drawing inspiration from Bob’s legendary collection. But, what good is having so many records if no-one else can hear them with you?

Big Planet Noise is Bob’s way of inviting everyone over to hang out in the music room while he and co-host Gina Bacon flip through the stacks and play great records. And – the BPN chat room is where the action is… they yak about what’s on the turntable, tell stories, backstories, and share what was had for dinner, friends ’n family style. Gina keeps the celestial orbit steady-as-it-goes; making sure the stylus stays in the groove, the stacks don’t teeter and the drinks don’t spill all over the console. NB: Gina can also be heard on Saturday afternoons as the host of Someday Matinee (also on WFMU's Give The Drummer Radio stream), a show filled with live musical performances and artist interviews, direct from Music City.

There’s a reason it’s called Big Planet Noise… the show covers a lot of musical ground; familiar, forgotten, unheralded, unheard… The sonic menu is ever-changing; you’ll hear oddball teens, psychedelic wizards, mod lads, sitar savants, space-cadets, groovy soundtracks, and maybe even some bossa nova, when it feels right.

Avatar 8:47pm bigplanetnoise:

TDK - that's right!!! Good one!
Avatar 8:48pm bigplanetnoise:

Zan - hahahaha! Got it!!!
Avatar 8:48pm TDK60:

Zan, I do love Motown, not all, but lots of it.
Avatar 8:48pm Zan:

Bobby Hart's an old friend of mine...he laughed when I told him :D
  8:48pm Tim from LH:

I saw Mark and Mickey each do this song in the same concert!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:49pm Matt Clarke:

I want a tambourine that sounds like that. I have been on quest for decades
Avatar 8:49pm Zan:

TDK60 I can't imagine what Motown someone wouldn't like!
Avatar 8:49pm Zan:

Tim from LH: what a coup!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:49pm Uncle Michael:

Zan, I went to boarding school with Bobby's son Brett.
Avatar 8:50pm TDK60:

I do recall the friction we longhairs got back then; it wasn't all flowers and peace.
Avatar 8:50pm Snayle:

Zan - I Wonder What Bobby's Doin Tonight …. :p
Avatar 8:51pm Zan:

Uncle Michael: very cool! Bobby and I go to the same church...we've known each other since the late 80s.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:51pm Gaylord Fields:

@Zan: Perhaps this Motown 45?: www.youtube.com...
  8:53pm joedz:

talking about long hair 45s, I really like the Outsiders (from NYC) song "The Guy with the Long Liverpool Hair". And that song had a decent cover by (believe it or not) Soupy Sales!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:53pm Matt Clarke:

We were fortunate to have Bobby Hart come to WFMU to show that doc in 2015. Wish it could see a wider release.
Avatar 8:53pm Zan:

Aw, Gaylord, I worked at A&R Recording in NYC during the Pippin sessions...I was in the control room when Irene recorded that!
Avatar 8:54pm bigplanetnoise:

Joedz - we've played BOTH versions here on BPN!!! I love that NYC Outsiders version!!!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:54pm Uncle Michael:

Zan, I saw the original cast of Pippin...Ben, Irene, John...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:54pm Gaylord Fields:

@Zan: Haha! What are the chances?!
Avatar 8:54pm TDK60:

Aw, great. This first Beck album is not well known enough. The first LP with Stewart on vocals?
  8:54pm Ojai John:

PR & the Raiders sounded/sound great but those outfits! Never took them seriously. Should have.
Avatar 8:55pm bigplanetnoise:

Matt - did you get to hang with Bobby? Such a great guy.
Avatar 8:55pm GregRnNashville:

Zan..Ralph Murphy told me once he recorded all the demos for Pippin..that your recollection?
Avatar 8:55pm Zan:

Gaylord, I know, right? Here's another one: I HAD JUST PULLED THAT VINYL from my collection to listen to later.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:55pm Gina Bacon:

Hi Ojai John!
Avatar 8:55pm bigplanetnoise:

Hey Ojai - yeah - there was so much greatness behind those suits!!!!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:56pm Matt Clarke:

I did FOH for the event and got to chat for a bit. Really great night.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:56pm Gaylord Fields:

Zan, this is just plain eerie!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:57pm Gaylord Fields:

(I own that Irene Ryan 45, by the way.)
Avatar 8:57pm bigplanetnoise:

TDK - just saw your comment - yes - first Beck solo LP! In mono!!!
Avatar 8:57pm Zan:

GredRNNashville, the demos for Pippin weren't recorded at A&R, in my recollection...maybe at Bell, or another smaller studio in the city.
  8:57pm Tim from LH:

Matt, I went to Monty Hall that night.Got his book and a couple records signed. I actually met Gaylord on the popcorn line!
Avatar 8:58pm Zan:

Gaylord, I'm thinking most people don't know that was a Motown record!
Avatar 8:58pm bigplanetnoise:

Gaylord - always in that popcorn line!!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:58pm Gaylord Fields:

@Tim From LH: I live life on the popcorn line!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:58pm Gina Bacon:

Was it The Plague or Plague (like Swans?) hee.
  9:05pm Eargasm!:

I think every state in the country had at least one band called The Plague, hahah
Avatar 9:05pm GregRnNashville:

Reo Canada must have had a happinin A&R dept. back in the day
Avatar 9:05pm Zan:

Uh oh...gotta leap off. See you angry boyz and sweet girlz next time!

I used to find this record quite often when I came down here and I still don't own it anymore, hahaah
Avatar 9:08pm bigplanetnoise:

GregRn - Now I always think of you when I play this LP!
Avatar 9:08pm Kip Brown:

I sold my Twentieth Century Zoo 45 because I was in a cash crunch and really only collected Michigan garage 45's at the time.
Avatar 9:09pm bigplanetnoise:

Kip - then it'll come back to you, I'm betting.
Avatar 9:09pm Julie P.:

Night, Zan!
Avatar 9:09pm vanhooserd:

Great Feminine voice.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:10pm Gaylord Fields:

I found "Living Love" on Athena dirt cheap years ago, and it's one of my cherished LP's.
Avatar 9:10pm GregRnNashville:

Im told it's nashville pickers in the late sixties "stretching" - you heard that Bob?
Avatar 9:10pm TDK60:

..oh my, J.A. on a mean streak!
Avatar 9:11pm Mailman Tom:

Grace could sing some scary songs!
Avatar 9:11pm bigplanetnoise:

Yes - it's Charlie McCoy, Wayne Moss and the boys, I do believe.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:11pm Gaylord Fields:

@GregRnNashville: It is sesh cats; the gals don't play on the LP, but the demos they do play on are a real treat.
Avatar 9:11pm bigplanetnoise:

Gaylord - my copy came from the FMU show, years before I came to Nashville...
Avatar 9:12pm bigplanetnoise:

Mailman - some of these songs scared the shit outta me when I was a kid!
Avatar 9:12pm TDK60:

"Crown" really caught some of that strangeness, friction, paranoia, etc.
Avatar 9:13pm bigplanetnoise:

Angry Jorma guitar!!!!
Avatar 9:13pm GregRnNashville:

saw a Boy Howdy ad pic of Grace recently that's hard to "un-see"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:15pm Gaylord Fields:

Bob, I used to see it for way too much $$$ at the WFMU shows. Hope it didn't set you back much.
Avatar 9:16pm vanhooserd:

Ever ride a Lear Jet, Bob?
Avatar 9:17pm bigplanetnoise:

Gaylord - I ponied up (for the time), but it was still sealed. Glad I nabbed it, because like Eargasm said - I guess it used to turn up here in Music City, but I've sure never seen one around....
Avatar 9:17pm bigplanetnoise:

David - only on Byrds records!!! You?!?!?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:18pm Matt Clarke:

We all should ride the lear jet, baby. BPN field trip
Avatar 9:18pm bigplanetnoise:

Only if we all go with McGuinn.....
Avatar 9:18pm vanhooserd:

Only in my dreams. I actually don't like flying for real.
Avatar 9:20pm TDK60:

I am still in awe (Byrds).
Avatar 9:20pm bigplanetnoise:

As good as anything gets, TDK...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:21pm Matt Clarke:

Notorious is one of the greatest achievements of recorded sound by anyone
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:22pm Doug Schulkind:

Is it true they went with Beau Brummels so their LPs would reside next to The Beatles in the record shoppes?
Avatar 9:22pm TDK60:

..that 'Natural' was an alternate take, right?
Avatar 9:22pm Snayle:

Byrds n Brummels, u r this rock-folker's hero! <3 !
Avatar 9:23pm bigplanetnoise:

Doug - 100% true.
  9:23pm Doug in Boston:

Jump a lot of years ahead and Nine Pound Hammer could be a fit on David Gray's "White Ladder."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:23pm Matt Clarke:

Love this song. One of the few tunes on Triangle with those amazing harmonies
Avatar 9:23pm bigplanetnoise:

TDK - that was the orig stereo version. I usually play that LP in mono, but I love that stereo mix in particular. Weird as it is.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:25pm Gaylord Fields:

Same LP filing theory was involved in the naming of this band: www.discogs.com...
Avatar 9:25pm Mailman Tom:

I was just listening to Super Session earlier today. Their music never gets old!
Avatar 9:25pm TDK60:

..huh, ok. // Was just thinking about Blues Project and Super Session.
Avatar 9:26pm bigplanetnoise:

Gaylord! Do you think!!! One of these days, I'm gonna do an entire show of cheap-ass Beatle knock off LPs... It's been a weakness for sooooo long....
  9:27pm Tim from LH:

My big brother had this in the house. Was it a double lp?
Avatar 9:27pm bigplanetnoise:

I'm so glad that I'm Vulcan mindmelting you guys, Mailman and TDK......
Avatar 9:27pm Julie P.:

Ooooh - cheap ass Beatle knock off LPs - it sounds so sordid! ;)
Avatar 9:27pm bigplanetnoise:

Tim - this was the first - a single LP. The next one - "Live Adventures" was a double.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:27pm Matt Clarke:

Interesting that Stills did this project and was asked to be the singer for BS&T too replacing Al. I wonder what the chronology was.
Avatar 9:28pm bigplanetnoise:

Matt - I don't know the BS&T story....
Avatar 9:28pm Kip Brown:

I'm official now with a groovy avatar!
Avatar 9:28pm bigplanetnoise:

Lookit you!!!!!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:29pm Gaylord Fields:

@Julie P.: I've got dozens and dozens of those Mocktops records!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:29pm Gina Bacon:

Nice one, Kip!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:29pm Matt Clarke:

And a fine avatar it is Kip!
Avatar 9:29pm TDK60:

..always thought Stills' lead guitar unique, yet related too to Neil Young's. both sounded like they utilized the whammy bar then.
Avatar 9:30pm bigplanetnoise:

Gretsch whammy bars! Grip 'em when you play!
Avatar 9:30pm Julie P.:

You would now, wouldn't you, Gaylord? With cheese and 45s.
Avatar 9:30pm bigplanetnoise:

Cheesy Beetles.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:31pm Gina Bacon:

Now there's a band name. Or a snack.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:32pm Matt Clarke:

Found an interesting interview with Al Kooper about Super Session www.soundbard.com...
Avatar 9:33pm TDK60:

Finally got to see Taj Mahal last year, outdoor live show.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:33pm Gaylord Fields:

Cheese vs. Beatles would be my version of Sophie's Choice.
Avatar 9:34pm bigplanetnoise:

Matt - cool. Can't wait to read. I've known Al for quite some time, and he never fails to amaze with his stories.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:34pm Matt Clarke:

What about a pressing of Abbey Road containing only Maxwell's, Gaylord? Problem solved! You can have the best of both worlds
Avatar 9:35pm bigplanetnoise:

Speaking of Gretsch whammy bars....
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:35pm Matt Clarke:

Ragas every week
Avatar 9:36pm bigplanetnoise:

Avatar 9:38pm vanhooserd:

That there's some raging Buffaloes.
Avatar 9:38pm Julie P.:

That Buffalo Springfield was AMAZING!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:38pm Matt Clarke:

Glad To Be Unhappy BPN! More ragas
Avatar 9:39pm Mailman Tom:

Sandy Bull made a great raga rock song and it takes up an entire side of his album.
Avatar 9:41pm TDK60:

Tom: My guess is that Sandy B. influenced a lot of following longhair bands; still have the LP.
Avatar 9:41pm bigplanetnoise:

Mailman - I love that Sandy Bull LP!
Avatar 9:44pm bigplanetnoise:

We'd probably have to play several ragas each day in order to be in line....
Avatar 9:44pm TDK60:

..never heard this. Moody Blues comes to mind.
Avatar 9:45pm bigplanetnoise:

If you poke around on the Getty Images site, for some reason, they have about 100+ Ars Nova photos. Wha??????????
  9:46pm Eargasm!:

One of those cool overlooked Elektra albums
Avatar 9:46pm bigplanetnoise:

Ars Acquired Taste????
Avatar 9:47pm Mailman Tom:

Ars Nova was a musical style that flourished in the Middle Ages. I had to look that one up.
Avatar 9:48pm GregRnNashville:

rather spell-binding ..well executed..not sure about the song writing..haha
Avatar 9:49pm GregRnNashville:
