I don't know about you guys, but this Pharmakon stuff is scaring the shit out of me.

it is intense

Man, I don't know who crossed this old witch, but she sounds PISSED.
  12:13am
Tom in St. Paul:

That was a pretty sharp turn from Gil Evans to Pharmakon (but who's complaining?)
  12:13am

Let's remember this album for Halloween
  12:14am

Yeah but I talked in between, Tom. That changes everything.

I'm a little concerned about that person as well as curious.

BTW half the houses on my block have Halloween stuff up already. By the time Halloween rolls around, they'll probably have Christmas decorations up.

Tom in St. Paul:

Ears reset. I get it, Mark.

Actually, google her--as I recall, she's rather attractive. But she's probably like that one in the shining--the beautiful girl who turns into a scary old hag.

her album art is just as scary: https://pharmakon.bandcamp.com/music

You's guyses' notion of scary is pretty lightweight.

Don't you tell me who my listeners are, Apple--you just stick to what you know best--making little Chinese slave children manufacture your phones and laptops with nets around the building so when they jump out the window to kill themselves the net catches them and you can put them back on the assembly line.

Yes, I am being critical, but how is that talking down? Yes, you buggers say shit that pisses me off, but how is expressing that fact condescending?

N.B. I really don't want to derail the vibe of the comments board, which I truly admire.

Better then some of the bubble gum ass kissing on one of the popular shows I shall not mention
This is quite entertaining and confusing

Entertaining and confusing is a good slogan. I'd wear that one proudly.

"Destroyed my notions of circular time" is a line from the song.

I could be persuaded that any of the albums between "Beggar's Banquet" and "Exile" are their best album. They're all great, including the live "Get Yer Ya-Ya's Out." I'm partial to "Let It Bleed" myself.
  1:52am

Yeah I wanted to dig into one of the album tracks you never hear, Scraps.

I always wish when those popular DJs are on a day off they would use a DJ like Markr or Kellen303 . Anyone way off the norm.
I don’t understand how the ones they use have good shows but when they fill in they are horrible.

=Tattoo You= is pretty good, IMGDO. =Undercover=, though, hoo boy.

GHS 1973. I looked at that playlist. It isn’t bad, it’s just a garden variety alternative playlist which takes few risks.

Goats Head mostly suffered in comparison to its predecessor, Exile.
  2:05am

I don’t listen to clay much. Does Clay have tame playlists?
  2:06am
ignatatus666:

I’m pretty open minded with music. Not a stones fan at all . I’ll give that GHS a listen. I saw the movie Rock and roll circus which everyone that performed was excellent until Yoko came on stage. Then you knew why it took them so many years to release that. She ruined the entire show.
  2:06am
rw:

There's a Stones album called Undercover?
  2:07am
Bonothedog:

Yes Mark but I would love for the New Stones Album to be two thirds as good as GHS.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:07am

i think the production is the main negative about goats head soup. good songs though
Avatar 2:07am

And everyone has an Overrated one. Mine is =Let It Bleed=. To me, a great single (“Gimme Shelter”), then okay, okay, okay, okay....
  2:11am

One thing is for sure. If The Rolling Stones puts out their new album and it sounds like shit and piss, Rolling Stone will give it four and a half stars and call it a return to form.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:12am
coelacanth∅:

(again...) exile. there are some very boring songs on that, and too much (bland) piano. they could've put all the best songs on 1 lp; but then it wouldn't be the big deal masterwork blah blah blah.
  2:13am

This sounds like a song Paul Simon ripped off for Graceland.

Monkey Man is just perfect. In fact I never request any thing but if that was played...

Most Stones fans would disagree with you guys, but you're entitled to your opinions.
  2:16am

Oh I'm ahead of myself, this is from Madagascar. The NEXT guy's from Peru.

It def has a west Africa vibe despite being south east Africa.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:18am

well, i'm as much a 'stones fan as any 'stones fan out there who is smart enough to have stopped listening to them by the end of the 70s!
Avatar 2:18am

Since Paul Simon used South African musicians, I don’t think he exactly ripped them off — except he didn’t give them songwriting credit (I think? Can’t exactly remember; it’s been thirty-plus years!)
  2:19am
ignatatus666:

Bonothedog
Yes/no
He does hit some punk and alternative music. Plays a decent variety with some standards. Know to play the jam,Fugazi,Stiff little fingers etc. but won’t touch the heavy NY stuff or anything industrial.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:19am
coelacanth∅:

i don't think he did, but he did give them paying gigs
Avatar 2:21am
Scraps:

(I mean, if they didn’t want Simon “ripping them off,” they could have stopped playing with him)
  2:22am
Bonothedog:

Simon paid them union wages.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:22am
coelacanth∅:

i correct myself. he did give some writing credits. (maybe not initially?)
Avatar 2:23am
Scraps:

On the other hand, the New Orleans musicians got mad at him, as I recall
Avatar 2:28am

Shoot, not “New Orleans”.... uh... Los Lobos, that was it! They were mad at Paul.
  2:30am
Bonothedog:

Hell they are still mad.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:30am
coelacanth∅:

people aren't thinking. some other artists i like also criticized him but there's no question that what he did had positive results for south african musicians and probably even helped to end aparthied sooner.
boycotting the south african government shouldn't have been interpreted as also boycott south african musicians.
  2:31am
Bonothedog:

But neither Los Lobos nor Paul Simon have made any albums that approach the work they were doing then.
  2:31am
rw:

Mark R, I'm exhausted and at a good stopping point but just decided to keep slogging away for at least another half hour. Thanks for keeping it interesting!
  2:33am
markr:

Thanks for hanging in there with us, rw!
  2:34am
Bonothedog:

I had no problem with Simon using them. I still don’t know who was telling the truth about those sessions. Some of the articles I have read seem like retribution against Simon. My comment about the African tune was in jest
  2:35am
ignatatus666:

Hercules is a fun song
Many FMU DJs are playing this.
  2:35am
ignatatus666:

What happened to Dean??
Avatar 2:35am
Hubig Pie:

I love this song
Avatar 2:36am

Los Lobos wasn’t mad at Simon because of the South African musicians etc; they were mad at him because they played with him (on =Graceland=) and they felt Simon treated them badly

They thought they brought him songwriting and Simon took credit....
  2:39am
Bonothedog:

That’s the same accusation made against Simon for the African tunes. He stole jams.

Jim Price has been on wfmu for at least 35 years. he had 4-hour shows (the norm then) in the 80s &/or 90s.

(p.s.: I like Paul Simon. But he’s.... complicated.)
  2:39am
Bonothedog:

Ok. I’ve only known of him during his one minute show days
  2:40am
Bonothedog:

Me too. Paul Seems like a jerk but I like his music.
  2:41am
Bonothedog:

Taylor Swift is a jerk and her music is awful.

graceland has elements strongly influenced, just as so many blues songs, rock songs, country songs, etc;
and other songs that are credited partially to south african musicians. (ie one member of ladymith black mambazo)
  2:44am
Bonothedog:

Graceland is one of my all time favorite albums. But the fact that there were no outtakes for the anniversary was telling. Me thinks Simon used others to break a dry spell.

...and i've heard he's a jerk too; but an awful lot of people are jerks (including some artists who have a reputation for being nice or sensitive or whatever who are certainly worse than Paul Simon) i don't think he's a terrible jerk.

Whoa this is not the mix of Misunderstood I have (but it's rad, and also hello). Hey what happened to the sonic collage!

I don’t like Taylor Swift’s music, but that’s okay, but I don’t need to like every genre. But I liked her calling out Trump in the music video awards.

Lot of good lyrics on that record, which he wrote.

Hey I liked the Wilco and whatever was playing behind it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:47am

There, you see? Maybe I'll have to make one myself at home.
  2:47am
markr:

diciassette that was my own mix of Wilco and Pharmakon, which worked amazingly well until the screaming hag came on.

I don’t think Simon has much extra tracks in his career, really. He writes slowly.
