@Annie: Having a flip phone is irrelevant to the surveillance described here. A smartphone allows you to have the Internet in your pocket and—thus—means that anyone with a service you use on that phone can track you.

Cell phone towers constantly track connection data and that data can be used to track you no matter how “dumb” the phone is. Read up on what a Stingray device is. This predates social media.
