The core of Big Planet Noise was formed when Bob Irwin was just 5 years old. The day he picked up his first 45, the whole thing set to spinning – and records and music have been pretty much all he’s thought about ever since. Avocation eventually became vocation, leading to Sundazed Music and Modern Harmonic, all drawing inspiration from Bob’s legendary collection. But, what good is having so many records if no-one else can hear them with you?

Big Planet Noise is Bob’s way of inviting everyone over to hang out in the music room while he and co-host Gina Bacon flip through the stacks and play great records. And – the BPN chat room is where the action is… they yak about what’s on the turntable, tell stories, backstories, and share what was had for dinner, friends ’n family style. Gina keeps the celestial orbit steady-as-it-goes; making sure the stylus stays in the groove, the stacks don’t teeter and the drinks don’t spill all over the console. NB: Gina can also be heard on Saturday afternoons as the host of Someday Matinee (also on WFMU's Give The Drummer Radio stream), a show filled with live musical performances and artist interviews, direct from Music City.

There’s a reason it’s called Big Planet Noise… the show covers a lot of musical ground; familiar, forgotten, unheralded, unheard… The sonic menu is ever-changing; you’ll hear oddball teens, psychedelic wizards, mod lads, sitar savants, space-cadets, groovy soundtracks, and maybe even some bossa nova, when it feels right.

Avatar 8:09pm bigplanetnoise:

Jay - yes - they recorded it twice - about a year and a half apart...
  8:10pm Eargasm!:

Good God, you've come out roaring tonight.
  8:10pm Jay S.:

I assume that was the later version, it was a bit more far out
Avatar 8:10pm bigplanetnoise:

Gaylord - my 45 looks like I dragged it from NY to Nashville - but it still plays pretty darn well!
Avatar 8:10pm Julie P.:

Gonna try, Eargasm! We just got a new roof, so that's a plus. It all hinges on the turn away from the coast now.
  8:10pm joedz:

A lot of us covet the Dovers 45!!

Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:12pm Gaylord Fields:

@Snayle: Why was Hound Dog Taylor hoarding all the fingers?

Avatar 8:34pm bigplanetnoise:

Eargasm - this is from B'ham!
Avatar 8:35pm Julie P.:

You hit the jackpot in Birmingham, didn't you, Bob?
Avatar 8:36pm bigplanetnoise:

Eargasm and I ALWAYS seem to hit the jackpot in B'ham, Julie!!! Seriously!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:36pm Gaylord Fields:

Good point, Bob. The Merseybeats were not exactly the most prolific band.
Avatar 8:37pm bigplanetnoise:

Now, the Searchers.... we could do Searchers every week for about two-three years without repeating!
Avatar 8:37pm Julie P.:

So many great records! I LOVE that Mike Berry single you played last week!
Avatar 8:37pm Mailman Tom:

I recall seeing the Searchers on TV when they played live on the Ed Sullivan Show
Avatar 8:37pm bigplanetnoise:

Aww - me too, Julie. An all-time fave. I could play it everyday!

Avatar 8:39pm bigplanetnoise:

You should do it!!! It'll be a long drive!!!
Avatar 8:39pm Julie P.:

Yay! And DC5 every week while we're at it!
Avatar 8:39pm AlexClarkCaprio:

I know you played it 30 mins ago, but I looked on Discogs for that Dovers 45, one for sale at $2500!
Avatar 8:39pm bigplanetnoise:

Jay - there are just SO many, right???? Unending greatness!
Avatar 8:39pm TDK60:

The Searchers continued playing gigs till this year, 2019!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:39pm Gaylord Fields:

Avatar 8:40pm bigplanetnoise:

Alex - yeah - it's super-pricey. I got mine in about - gulp - 1980. There was a ten-inch available for a while on the Misty Lane label. That should be around.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:40pm Gina Bacon:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:42pm Gaylord Fields:

I was outbid for the Dovers 45 on Reprise about 20 years ago, and that's as close as I've come. Good thing I have the Misty Lane 10-inch.
  8:43pm Tim from LH:

Ok raise your hand if this the first time hearing The Arizona Swamp Company! Mines up!
  8:43pm joedz:

Avatar 8:50pm bigplanetnoise:

Hey Alan!!! Thank you, thank you!!! So glad you're here!!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:50pm Gina Bacon:

Hi Alan! Happy Birthday!!
  8:50pm Eargasm!:

Mickey Dolenz is easily one of the most underrated rock and roll singers.
  8:50pm Eargasm!:

Great $5 score!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:50pm Gina Bacon:

I agree, eargasm!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:50pm Gina Bacon:

Hi Uncle Michael!!
Avatar 8:50pm Andy R:

Totally agree, Eargasm!
Avatar 8:51pm Julie P.:

Agreed, Eargasm! And they really go all out with the harmonies here!
Avatar 8:51pm bigplanetnoise:

Uncle Mike - BEFORE John's Children!!! 1966!!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:51pm nostrangerer:

Anyone else hearing echo of Leader of the Pack in this Monkeys tune. Just an echo in my head.
Avatar 8:52pm bigplanetnoise:

hmmmm... nostrangerer - I've got to go back and listen for that. It never occurred to me....
Avatar 8:53pm Creature Boy:

This has to be a post "time of the season" mojo cut
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:53pm Gaylord Fields:

The Monkees' producers must have plotzed when they heard Micky sing! And then they stick him in the back on on a drum kit.
Avatar 8:54pm bigplanetnoise:

Creature Boy - same year!
Avatar 8:54pm Creature Boy:

Food for thought
Avatar 8:54pm bigplanetnoise:

Gaylord - so true. Do you think they even recognized how great he was???
  8:55pm AlanM:

Thanks Gina! Yet another 30th Birthday .......
Avatar 8:55pm Snayle:

Sigh, rock-folkin' time... Byrds do IT every time ! <3
Avatar 8:55pm bigplanetnoise:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:55pm Uncle Michael:

No more than they recognized what a hack Davy was.
Avatar 8:56pm Julie P.:

Roger's guitar is so distinctive.
Avatar 8:56pm bigplanetnoise:

Uncle Mike!!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:56pm Gaylord Fields:

I think they were fixated on Davy being the heartthrob and lost sight of the Beatles' "four-headed monster" concept they had for the Monkees.
Avatar 8:56pm Snayle:

YEAH, Bob ! Who's fault is THAT ?!
  8:56pm Eargasm!:

Im not sure Davy was a hack.
Avatar 8:56pm Andy R:

OH wow, I LOVE The Flamin' Groovies! Love this cover, love this record by them!
Avatar 8:57pm bigplanetnoise:

Yeah - I'm a pretty big Davy fan myself.
Avatar 8:57pm Andy R:

Same, when it comes to Davy. Not a hack at all.
Avatar 8:57pm bigplanetnoise:

Flamin Groovies every week!!!!
  8:57pm Jay S.:

Within the context of The Monkees, Davy was fine. You got enough of him but not too much.
Avatar 8:57pm AlexClarkCaprio:

There's an early 90s band called Chapterhouse that also do a great cover of "It Won't Be Wrong"
Avatar 8:57pm Dominick:

Aw Jeez, They needed a hearthrob = Davy
Davy was a accomplished drummer but didn't photo so well behind the kit. Micky got stuck with them though he never played them before.
Avatar 8:57pm TDK60:

Groovies capture the feel of the original well.
Avatar 8:58pm Andy R:

Jumpin' In The Night is such a great LP!
  8:58pm Doug Schulkind:

Big flamin’ howdy!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:58pm Uncle Michael:

Sorry. I congratulate the Monkees' brain trust for maximizing Davy's potential.
Avatar 8:58pm bigplanetnoise:

Alex - since you suggested, I will listen. Although I usually get hives when 90's music is played.
  8:58pm joedz:

Great segue into a great cover! Being a relatively recent addition to the Planeteers I probably missed you playing the Beefeaters original version.
  8:58pm Eargasm!:

You and I is a monster. I love the songs he sang. I just think Mickey was better.
Avatar 8:59pm bigplanetnoise:

Hey Doug!!!!! A big Flamin welcome to you!!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:59pm Gaylord Fields:

Nez once said they were all assigned the wrong instruments, and it shoulda been Mickey as frontman, Peter on guitar, Mike on bass, and Davy on drums (as he actually could play them).
Avatar 8:59pm AlexClarkCaprio:

Bob, good luck finding it - was only issued as a flexi
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:59pm Gina Bacon:

Big Flaming Howdy back at you, Doug!!
Avatar 8:59pm bigplanetnoise:

Joedz - I have played it before, but I'll certainly play it for you again!!!
  8:59pm Eargasm!:

Did you give a listen to the most recent Monkees LP, BPN?

They all had their strengths, though I think Peter was the weaker vocalist of the four.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:00pm Uncle Michael:

True fact, the Druids of Stonehenge were all 18" tall. And oh, how they danced.
Avatar 9:00pm bigplanetnoise:

Eargasm - I certainly did. Mixed opinions.
  9:00pm Eargasm!:

Agreed, Julie.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:00pm Gina Bacon:

I really like it, eargasm...and the duet with Nez and Mickey is my favorite. Absolutely beautiful.
Avatar 9:00pm Julie P.:

Are you talking about "Good Times!", Eargasm?
Avatar 9:00pm bigplanetnoise:

Uncle Mike - hahahaha!
Avatar 9:00pm Creature Boy:

I saw a small club double bill featuring the Munsters Butch Patrick & the Peter Tork Project in 83 or so. They played a monkee episode featuring Butch . if you can remember the 80s you WERE there
  9:01pm Jay S.:

They likely saw Mickey as the Ringo (the funny one), so having him as the drummer made a certain sense.
Avatar 9:01pm Mailman Tom:

I have a CD copy of Oar. Very strange album!
  9:01pm joedz:

I've seen video of the Druids appearing on the Joe Franklin show,
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:02pm Gina Bacon:

That's a good point, Jay S.
Avatar 9:02pm bigplanetnoise:

I saw the Druids at their reunion show uptown, about ten years ago. They were great!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:02pm Gaylord Fields:

And I was recently running down a list of Davy vocals I liked, and was surprised that I had more than I thought I would. ("Forget That Girl" is perhaps my favorite, and he does an undeniably fine job on "Daydream Believer.")
Avatar 9:02pm bigplanetnoise:

Mailman - perfectly strange!!!!

Avatar 9:03pm bigplanetnoise:

TDK - one of the best sounds. Man. Astounding.
Avatar 9:04pm Julie P.:

I only got it recently and have listened to it once. Have to check it out again.
  9:04pm Eargasm!:

I have the best ever story about finding an original copy of Oar don't I ,BPN? hahah. In someones bathroom lol
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:05pm Gina Bacon:

Do tell, eargasm!
Avatar 9:05pm bigplanetnoise:

Eargasm - you have the sole honor of finding an original Oar in a bathroom, for sure!!!!!
Avatar 9:05pm Julie P.:

Thirded on "She Hangs Out".
Avatar 9:07pm bigplanetnoise:

Star Collector is up there.
  9:09pm Eargasm!:

Is this Food track from the Capitol find from Great Escape?
Avatar 9:09pm bigplanetnoise:

Barry P - you're absolutely right.
Avatar 9:09pm Creature Boy:

Um...Star Collector
Avatar 9:09pm Julie P.:

Problem with "Daydream Believer" is that it got overplayed for awhile. "Star Collector" rocks!
  9:10pm Eargasm!:

Daydream Believer is so perfect.
Avatar 9:10pm bigplanetnoise:

Eargasm - indeed it is.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:10pm Uncle Michael:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:10pm Gina Bacon:

It's so hard to type, Uncle Michael...must have been easier before spelllcheck!
  9:11pm DJ Pat K:

Killer set Bob & Gina!!
Avatar 9:11pm Dominick:

The released version of Star Collector drives me nuts. They sped it up. Making Davys already squeaky vocal even more so.
Sounds best to me pitched down 1 1/2 steps.
Swag For Life Member 9:11pm Barry P.:

Love the organ on this one!
Avatar 9:11pm bigplanetnoise:

Yeah - the booking agent must have loved that.
Avatar 9:12pm Julie P.:

  9:26pm Eargasm!:

This record just blows me away
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:26pm Uncle Michael:

Johnny put the 5D on the map and basically hired Jimmy to write them an album...except for that one ong by those two Brits. Whatever happened to those guys?
Avatar 9:26pm bigplanetnoise:

Yes - Esp in mono!!!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:26pm Gaylord Fields:

Yes, Magic Garden, Bob.

  9:57pm Doug in Boston:

The Bonzos, Neil Innes in particular, are the Beatles-to-Python link. Look for "Do Not Adjust Your Set" videos on YouTube. Neil is the official Seventh Python" in the troupe. The Bonzos are the only other band with a song that is in a Beatles project -- Magical Mystery Tour.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:57pm Gaylord Fields:

@Uncle Michael: Is that a reference to my having performed "The Intro and the Outro" with the Hoof & Mouth Sinfonia many years ago?
