Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:05pm Carmichael:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:06pm David D:

Hey Carmichael - that's in Arabic from Jordan.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:06pm chris:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:06pm David D:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:25pm David D:

And hey there, Doctorjazz!
Avatar 3:36pm fred:

I really enjoy this Roud series
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:38pm David D:

Glad you like it, Fred!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:40pm Yvang:

I like them too... but do you plan to cover them all? There seem to be many of them!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:41pm David D:

There are around 25,000, Yvang, so, um...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:43pm Yvang:

You can do it!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:43pm David D:

A good number seem to have never been recorded or at least not that I could find, so that could speed things up a bit.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:47pm Yvang:

I suggest adding a new stream to the wfmu network : the Roud-io!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:49pm David D:

Yvang - that is a great idea - and name!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:52pm Linda Lee:

wow. this is fabulous. i'm totally transported ~ which is great, as i don't really wish to be where i am, physically.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:53pm crateslinger:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:53pm Webhamster Henry:

Who let those buskers on the subway?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:53pm David D:

Glad to help, Linda, as far as that goes.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:54pm David D:

Hey Crateslinger and Henry!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:54pm Linda Lee:

you have indeed. :-D
wow.
Avatar 3:54pm Listening Out There:

Mahavishnu Bessarabia, maybe?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:56pm chresti:

Hello again
Avatar 3:59pm northguineahills:

Never heard of Eden Archer. Archer is a small town, now suburb of Gainesville.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:00pm Linda Lee:

do i actually belong in prague? i'm game!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:03pm Yvang:

This is the best way to (re)discover the place where you live: through the eyes of your visiting friends. I do that every summer.
  4:06pm pink:

It's Edan Archer. David messed up the spelling again!!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:06pm David D:

Hey NGH - actually Edan, which I've now corrected.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:06pm Linda Lee:

the place where i live is so self-evident there's nothing to show them! woods.. wildlife.. pretty. i think that sense of the new in the familiar is probably more apt in urban places.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:07pm Stanley:

That was a lovely melange of Rock n Roll in a Caribbean and Congolese style
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:07pm Linda Lee:

that was wonderful.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:09pm Linda Lee:

and this late psychedelia from Mavi is the kind of record i just love.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:09pm Yvang:

This is the reverse Altın Gün : a turkish band covering a Netherland's band (Shocking Blue)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:10pm Yvang:

Or am I wrong?
Avatar 4:11pm fred:

Sorry to linger a few stations behind, but is there anything like the Roud index for German folk songs?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:11pm David D:

Yvang, you are absolutely correct! It is Send me a postcard by Shocking Blue
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:12pm David D:

Fred, I haven't seen any, but there could be one. I should really have a look.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:13pm Stanley:

I've just found out that Johnny Clegg passed away last month.
Don't think WFMU marked this, unless I missed it.
  4:14pm melinda:

Hello
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:22pm David D:

Hello Melinda!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:23pm David D:

Stanley: Apparently not, in fact. I also assumed someone must have done something...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:31pm Carmichael:

@Stanley, I am a huge Clegg fan and really angry that nobody even knew who he was. No tributes that I know of, which is a damn shame.
Avatar 4:31pm fred:

@Stanley: I don't think any DJ mentioned it, but I'm pretty sure I first read about his death on a WFMU playlist
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:32pm Linda Lee:

what a marvelous treatment of some outdated american slang that was. fabulous stuff.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:34pm David D:

Fred: It might have been on this playlist, which is where I heard about it myself. Let's see what we can do...
  4:34pm pink:

Yep, the Dutch certainly have made some criminal records.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:34pm Carmichael:

Playing the Dutch glam rock, David? :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:34pm Linda Lee:

intense glam. so gay. love it!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:34pm Stanley:

@Carmichael: he was hugely important in South Africa. I think he was much appreciated in France
@fred: Rob Weisberg's, perhaps.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:35pm Carmichael:

Rob has been out a few weeks, with Gateway to Joy in his place.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:35pm Stanley:

Rob, if you're reading this.............
Avatar 4:37pm fred:

@Stanley: not Rob's, it's too late for me (and my neighbors)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:37pm Linda Lee:

some pretty ugly english words were nice to name your european band with, once upon a time! :-D
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:38pm Linda Lee:

dump .. frumpy ..
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:38pm Carmichael:

Keep waiting for the intro to "Hush".
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:39pm David D:

Some bands use the harshest of English in their names here, without sounding like they should.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:39pm Linda Lee:

:-D
that same beautiful organ tone .. sounds like it's in someone's mouth.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:39pm Linda Lee:

harsh words! yes! isn't that funny.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:41pm Stanley:

@fred: haha. I know what you mean. It's on at 11pm here, Saturdays, and I'm usually back from the pub and, how do I put it, a little sleepy.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:42pm Linda Lee:

love this 'boye' side. is this 1990 or is it not? :-) :-)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:43pm Carmichael:

A little Talking Headsy??
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:44pm Linda Lee:

not quite the vocal..
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:44pm David D:

They may have heard I Zimbra in their former lives.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:44pm Carmichael:

Exactly the song, David.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:47pm Linda Lee:

i'm **loving** this set. this is just great stuff.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:47pm Stanley:

Aye-up, it's Burnley's finest Chumbawamba
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:52pm David D:

Glad you are, Linda! Yes indeed, Stanley!
Avatar 4:55pm fred:

Fairuz! Always welcome to my ears
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:03pm Linda Lee:

fantastic set.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:05pm Linda Lee:

loving your bed music today too. the whole show.. so sweet to my ears. thanks David!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:06pm David D:

Thanks so much, Linda!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:06pm Linda Lee:

and now Ligeti! bravo! :-)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:07pm Linda Lee:

let's drown out that passing boombox dressed as an SUV..
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:12pm David D:

This part may be loud enough...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:15pm Linda Lee:

:-)
i'd just like to enter this musical room & stay a while.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:17pm David D:

It must make a fantastic concert piece.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:23pm Linda Lee:

incredible!
Avatar 5:28pm hilmar:

sounds like the singing saw again... i think i saw the film...very nice...good evening...
Avatar 5:28pm fred:

Many years ago, I spent New Year's day at a museum that had a show about Cremaster. I saw all 5 movies, plus a handful of Drawing Restraint ones. And saw many flags, sculptures, and stuff. I still don't really like Barney's aesthetics (there's something really alien to me, maybe the jock side), but there's something I respect about the scope of his obsessions, it was a day well spent. Also, Cremaster 3 features Guinness.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:31pm David D:

Hey Hilmar, good evening! I believe it is a theramin or two this time, in fact.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:32pm Linda Lee:

was just sitting here trying to parse that out.. :-D
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:32pm David D:

Fred, all five parts - that must have been most of a day. I will need to track it down, although I may not be in for the whole journey.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:33pm Linda Lee:

just marvelous.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:35pm David D:

Now for something completely different.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:35pm Linda Lee:

i've been lost in space a bit here. time just .. disappeared for a while. that's good stuff. :-)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:35pm Linda Lee:

fabulous shift.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:37pm Linda Lee:

.. and there go the horse trailers past my door. :-)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:39pm David D:

Linda, it sounds like you live in an interesting place.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:41pm Linda Lee:

i'm in the catskill mountains of new york, on a hilly through-road a few miles from some pastures. :-)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:43pm David D:

Sounds nice, Linda
Avatar 5:44pm fred:

@David: Yep. I arrived when the museum opened and left when it closed, 8 or 9 hours
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:53pm David D:

Fred: And on a New Year's Day, that is dedication
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:54pm Linda Lee:

it's lovely here. a new 'world destination' apparently. i've been spending time here for 30 years or so, though never lived on a main road before. seems awfully busy! a vehicle every half hour! :-D
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:56pm Linda Lee:

that's enough for me to wish to sell out, which i'm preparing to do. should have the cabin listed this month.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:57pm David D:

Sounds tempting, but the commute could be a bit long I'm afraid.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:57pm chris:

this has been wonderful, David. thank you! my stop is coming up here soon.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:58pm Linda Lee:

gosh, that's too bad!
Avatar 5:58pm fred:

@David: Opportunism, not dedication. I don't celebrate the new year anyway (expensive mandatory party), so I took advantage of the lack of people in there
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:58pm David D:

Thanks for riding along, Chris!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:59pm chris:

Linda, would you share posting with us, once your cabin is listed, please?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:59pm Linda Lee:

that sounds lovely to me, fred.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:59pm Linda Lee:

sure, chris. are you looking for something in the area?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:00pm chris:

my son and his partner are looking, and we are, too, kinda. :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:01pm Linda Lee:

i'd recommend the area to anyone. it's a beautiful place to be. i'm about 90 miles from the city ~ though because this is the city watershed & has had no development, it feels like another world. :-)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:03pm Linda Lee:

just passed along my email address. if you send me yours i'll be in touch!
Avatar 6:10pm fred:

I wouldn't call Cremaster experimental, it's too slick for that. But worth seeing (especially 3).
Anyway, we're getting to my stop. Thanks David!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:10pm chris:

thank you, Linda Lee!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:11pm doctorjazz:

The Birth of the Cool band, great stuff!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:11pm Linda Lee:

sure! :-)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:13pm David D:

Thanks, Fred, I'll comb the usual sources for it later, have a good night!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:13pm Linda Lee:

Sun Ra & the Arkestra! what an amazing, amazing group of people to see perform. a great experience!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:14pm Mark Hurst:

Got on the subway late today but I'm here - hi David, hi all!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:14pm Linda Lee:

hi Mark! :-)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:16pm David D:

Hey there, Mark - glad to see and hear you back safe and sound.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:18pm Mark Hurst:

Thanks! All good. Though NYC is really hot & humid this week.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:20pm David D:

New York in August is a particular kind of New York.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:22pm doctorjazz:

I saw Sun Ra and the orchestra many times back in the day. Wotta trip!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:23pm David D:

It must have been something magical, Doctorjazz.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:24pm Linda Lee:

it sure is, David! it's when city dwellers show what they're made of. :-D
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:25pm Stanley:

Funny doctorjazz. I was just thinking that Sun Ra and His Arkestra back in 1980 was one of my best ever gigs.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:28pm David D:

We had just one day this summer here that reminded me of that old feeling, could hardly move.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:28pm chresti:

This is great, thanks David!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:29pm Linda Lee:

Stanley, i saw them about a year prior, at the Squat Theater in new york. that was a great venue. very close.
haven't always been a bumpkin.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:29pm David D:

My pleasure, Chresti!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:30pm Linda Lee:

(yes. she looks like something parked in the field to scare the crows, but she was once a hip city kitty!)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:31pm Stanley:

Linda - it was when I lived in London. We were so spoilt back then.
Living in Scotland the past 30 years has been a completely different proposition.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:33pm Linda Lee:

really? how's that?
my best buddy from new york is now a scottish citizen. married & raised a family there.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:35pm Stanley:

Talking live music.
Not many international acts make it this far north.
Great place to live otherwise.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:36pm doctorjazz:

In the 80s and 90s Ra and the Arkestra were frequently in clubs in NY. Jazz clubs, punk venues, you name it, and they put on a fabulous show. I caught them whenever I could (had a few bands I would see whenever I could then; The Microscopic Septet, Abdullah Ibrahim, The Roches come to mind).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:36pm Linda Lee:

@Stanley ~ right. i get that about the name acts. there seem to be good local scenes in glasgow & edinburgh, though.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:38pm David D:

Doc: Are there any that you try not to miss today?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:39pm Linda Lee:

the Squat was one of those beautiful venues where good music was good music, of any genre. i really liked it there. i
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:40pm Linda Lee:

think the arkestra were in residence there for a while.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:40pm doctorjazz:

Just saw Abdullah Ibrahim and not took long ago The Micros (who come together every few months and I've caught many of those). But, to quote a wise man, "don't get around (that) much anymore"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:43pm Stanley:

Linda - Glasgow, more than Edinburgh. We lack the medium size venues.
But, yeah, we manage somehow.I saw Neneh Cherry, Andrew Wasalyk and a wonderful tenor singer Lawrence Brownlee in the last couple of weeks.
It's festival time, after all.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:44pm Linda Lee:

found a photo of Sun Ra at the Squat! did i say it was close? :-)i.pinimg.com...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:44pm Linda Lee:

gosh, that's right ! festival time again!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:46pm Stanley:

Anyway look at the time, this show is just so good. Better get to ma' bed, though.
Thanks David and good night everyone.
(Til tomorrow)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:46pm David D:

Great photo, Linda!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:46pm David D:

Thanks, Stanley, have a good night!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:46pm doctorjazz:

Just saw Eddie Palmieri a week ago, he can still bring it!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:47pm Linda Lee:

good night, Stanley!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:48pm Linda Lee:

oh gosh. please help me, people. what song is Brita singing, in English?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:49pm David D:

It's Dark Eyes, a Russian song actually.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:49pm doctorjazz:

Ochichornia, Dark Eyes in English
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:49pm Linda Lee:

oh! thanks David!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:50pm Linda Lee:
