Happy marathon show, Kurtele.
  12:06pm P-90:

Avatar 12:18pm Kurt Gottschalk:

hey everyone! thanks for stopping by!
Avatar 12:19pm Franco Twinkie:

Hey Kurt. The flipside of Sally Go 'Round The Roses, Sing Along With The Jaynettes is real good too! I like to imagine Grace Slick and Tim Buckley both sang along with it and said "Fuck yeah, I'm doing this!" before they played it in public.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:19pm chresti:

Where have all the pizza huts gone....
Avatar 12:21pm Kurt Gottschalk:

there's a pizza hut in my hometown that turned into a thai restaurant but it still looks like a pizza hut if that's any consolation.

franco, my single has an instrumental mix on the flip. what song's on yours?

hey ngh, glad to know you're out there.

Not a field of dandelions? Or, whatever grew in it's place @Talking Heads
Avatar 12:25pm Franco Twinkie:

The Tasty Freeze by my mom's house is now a Thai Restaurant. It's not the best, but pretty good.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:25pm Doug Schulkind:

Crazy! I am working on my show for next Friday and just a few minutes ago I was listening to Jeanne Lee's take on Lazy Afternoon.
Avatar 12:26pm Kurt Gottschalk:

DOUG! i've got jeanne lee in the stack! not sure if i have that one, tho.
Avatar 12:26pm Kurt Gottschalk:

nope, not on the recent ran black set. ah well.
Avatar 12:27pm Franco Twinkie:

Kurt, It's the same one. I can see it in my mind's eye! Mustard yellow with brown lettering.
Avatar 12:28pm Kurt Gottschalk:

hahahahahahha! i love that you imagine grace slick and tim buckley singing along to instru 45s. i didn't quite get it at first. i hope they're using broomstick mic stands in your mind's eye.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:28pm Doug Schulkind:

Yes, but that recent Ran Blake/Jeanne Lee trove is a joy. Hooray!

I'm not familiar w/ the Freeman Etudes, and I've studied a lot of Cage, how did I miss it???!!
Avatar 1:14pm Kurt Gottschalk:

well, there is a lot of it...
Avatar 1:15pm coelacanth∅:

hi Kurt and all
Avatar 1:16pm Kurt Gottschalk:

heya coel!
Avatar 1:19pm fred:

Good afternoon Kurt and all. I'm late, I was listening to an interview of the director of Instants Chavirés (my favorite venue)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:22pm Linda Lee:

just saw a great little documentary on the collaborative partnershp between Cage & Cunningham, called 'from zero'. recommended.
Avatar 1:25pm Kurt Gottschalk:

hiya, fred and linda!

linda, i don't know that one, will have to look for it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:28pm Linda Lee:

youtube meandering :-)
some folks here know this, but a lady i cared for was the first treasurer of the ny mycological society when Cage was chair. she had many great stories to tell of their outings. fun times! she saw lots of initial performances of his work in new york. adored him.
Avatar 1:28pm fred:

I see I missed Wu Man. Punching self innaface in penance
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:30pm Linda Lee:

i also have a parlor chair Cage once used, if i can pry it out of the barn it's sitting in. :-D
Avatar 1:30pm Kurt Gottschalk:

linda, that's great! i'd love to have heard her tales.

fred, you only have to keep punching yourself until the archive is up.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:34pm Linda Lee:

Kurt, they'd sit in a ditch somewhere near a forest after hunting fungi & talk about how his work was going. my friend remembered John's description of a certain premier in Europe, possibly Paris, where the audience was so upset by the performance they threw garbage at the musicians. John was thrilled by that. they were paying attention!
Avatar 1:34pm Franco Twinkie:

Linda, In 1984 I saw John Cage and Merce Cunningham together at the Pasadena Civic. John fiddled with a pile of old radios on a table while Merce jumped around and ran back and forth. It was close to my house, so I walked to the show.
Avatar 1:35pm Kurt Gottschalk:

linda, such a good story
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:36pm Linda Lee:

that's my idea of fun to watch, Franco.
it's easy to forget how utterly senseless Cage's work seemed for a long time, to general audiences. a joke punchline. absurdity. fraud. i, personally, love his work & most likely would have loved him just as my friend did. always a twinkle in his eye, she told me.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:37pm Linda Lee:

the guy everyone wanted to sit with at dinner. :-)
just a very generous spirit.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:38pm Ken From Hyde Park:

Hello, all. Good day to Play Kurt-igo.
Avatar 1:39pm Kurt Gottschalk:

haha, hey k from hp!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:40pm Linda Lee:

Kurt-igo! :-D
Avatar 1:41pm coelacanth∅:

hey if this piece is turned up loud, does it qualify as "blasting" it?
Avatar 1:42pm coelacanth∅:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:42pm listener james from westwood:

Good GTDR week for Al Stewart!
Avatar 1:43pm fred:

There's a Cage quote (among a bunch of others) on a theater where I often go for dance shows: "I am trying to be unfamiliar with what I'm doing"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:44pm Linda Lee:

fabulous. :-)
  1:45pm P-90:

Haven’t heard this Al in a long time. Al presented a whole package: the songwriting, performance, arrangement, production, engineering all fit together.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:45pm listener james from westwood:

Uh-oh, sax solo, Michael Shelley's gonna start punching a wall.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:45pm Linda Lee:

fred, i like this one: 'i can't understand why people are frightened of new ideas. i'm frightened of the old ones.'
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:47pm Linda Lee:

all that airplay back when, ruined this song for me totally. i'm trying, though.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:48pm Doug Schulkind:

From Wikipedia:

"The song is also of note for having the highest note ever hit on an alto saxophone by Phil Kenzie on a studio recording as a lead into the sax solo as Peter White's acoustic guitar solo was ending."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:49pm listener james from westwood:

It's stuff in the early/mid '90s that falls into that category of radio overplay for me. I lost a vote at the office to have FMU on, and they switched to the local top 40 channel. I kept tick marks for the # of times I heard dross like Ace of Base and Sheryl Crow. 6 times for some songs in 8 hours! Agonizing.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:51pm Linda Lee:

i think i'd stopped hearing commercial radio by then. no idea!
sorry about the vote, james.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:52pm Linda Lee:

i think people like the predictability & also the fact that they don't have to pay attentiion to it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:53pm listener james from westwood:

It all worked out. Got my own cube vs. a communal office shortly thereafter. The next job was even better b/c I could stream the station to headphones!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:54pm listener james from westwood:

"I could listen all day to everything I can't remember hearing!"
Avatar 1:54pm Kurt Gottschalk:

i love not paying attention to things. i can not pay attention to the most demanding or nuanced of art. and i'm ace at not paying attention to news on the radio.
Avatar 1:54pm fred:

The first time someone in my office asked me to play what I was listening to out loud, it was Kenny G's show. It was also the last time
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:54pm listener james from westwood:

(For the benefit of NYC area folks, it was Z100. Brutal. At least I didn't have to listen to their fucking zoo program during drive time.)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:55pm Linda Lee:

here's what i like: my nearest neighbor is using a chainsaw right now & the sound works really well with the muddersten. even tonally!
Avatar 1:56pm fred:

Someone outside is hammering on metal right now, it doesn't mesh that well
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:56pm Linda Lee:

eek! z100!
Avatar 2:02pm geezerette:

Good left coast morning, Kurt and maze walkers !
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:03pm chresti:

Round one is done, now to free world minotaurs!
Avatar 2:04pm Jeff Moore:

You need to give that guy a stern talking-to.
Avatar 2:05pm coelacanth∅:

i couldn't quite imagine Tim Buckley and/or Grace Slick singing just then...
Avatar 2:10pm geezerette:

Free mini minotaurs ?! Free range?
Avatar 2:11pm Kurt Gottschalk:

hey geez.

and jeff, i will. i will.
Avatar 2:11pm Franco Twinkie:

Well if you couldn't imagine Grace or Tim singing along how about me screaming at my mother on the phone to take her goddamned medicine, because that exactly what was happening while the reprise of that song was been played!
Avatar 2:16pm geezerette:

Sewell worthy!
Avatar 2:16pm fred:

Art Ensemble of Chicago segue? I'm all for it
Avatar 2:17pm Kurt Gottschalk:

fred, we'll get there, but not quite yet
Avatar 2:18pm geezerette:

Sounds like me when someone quotes the latest tweet.
Avatar 2:19pm geezerette:

Except this I like.
Avatar 2:19pm Kurt Gottschalk:

haha geez
Avatar 2:20pm fred:

@Franco Twinkie: Thanks for the timely reminder that I should take mine
Avatar 2:20pm coelacanth∅:

i'm sorry Franco. for what it's worth, with the right effects i might've liked that as much as Grace Slick singing along.
Avatar 2:23pm coelacanth∅:

(i am really sorry though. i remember struggling to get my father to take his meds/supps)
Avatar 2:29pm fred:

I had a fun misunderstanding with a coworker, disagreeing about what we liked about Braxton. I meant Anthony, he meant Toni, and neither of us had even heard of the other Braxton. It took us close to 10 minutes to figure out something was amiss.
Avatar 2:31pm Franco Twinkie:

Coel, it's what life is now. My mom is/was really great in all kinds of ways, but at this point she can be totally exasperating. She has always been a pharmaphobe, but all her weirdness is now dialed up to 11.
Avatar 2:33pm Kurt Gottschalk:

fred, that's hilarious.

franco, hand in there.
Avatar 2:34pm coelacanth∅:

hahaha i love when that happens, fred!
i don't remember the subject but getting to the point of almost yelling at each-other like WHAT THE FUCK ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT! then someone's like uh, wait, are you talking about ... ?
Avatar 2:36pm coelacanth∅:

Franco, you've eluded to it. it's rough but you're strong and she's lucky you are.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:39pm Ken From Hyde Park:

I wonder how many times that's happened where the subject is Kenny G.
Avatar 2:42pm fred:

@Ken From Hyde Park: I think the good one even had a release with Jonathan Zorn to foster confusion, but it was probably too confidential to work
Avatar 2:42pm coelacanth∅:

Avatar 2:46pm coelacanth∅:

Avatar 2:49pm fred:

Unfortunately, I've never had a confusion between Keiji Haino and Heino (who I only know from a People Like Us track)
Avatar 3:02pm fred:

But I do remember overhearing two guys at a concert excited about how Donna Summer would be playing on a small side stage in a festival, with a very affordable ticket price. I asked where it was and checked once I got home, and sure enough, it was Jason Forrest. I regret not telling them, but maybe they had a nice surprise
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:06pm Ken From Hyde Park:

Oh, joyful day! It's Swagmas here!
Avatar 3:08pm fred:

@Ken From Hyde Park: Merry Swagmas (it was yesterday for me)
