A viking ship appears on the horizon, a likeness of Alice Coltrane carved into its bow. Rare birds flock together to sing Francoise Hardy as soul hits. A sunset of blips and bleeps fills the air.

Loving this!
  9:29am PJ:

91.1 is off the air in Brooklyn (or at least it’s playing something completely different than Mateo very quietly)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:31am Ike:

Yes, 91.1 is quietly playing something different (backup tape?) from what's on the stream.
  9:32am PJ:

And now Trouble is back on the air with Mateo
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:41am melinda:

I like this better than the original
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:43am Aaron Working In Newark:

Fantastic show this morning Trouble!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:43am rsj:

feeling a lot of gateway DJ love
also like the artist photo, way better with the artist in the work
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:54am Trouble:

wow! what an epic fail moment there, one for the history books. apparently the robot was triggered and started playing music that was not mateo kingman live. so i will play a few mateo kingman cuts to replace the gorgeous set we lost to history. i am so very sorry!
  9:58am Meesalikeu:

Glitchy audio there unfortunately, but the show must go on and you came back swinging — keep it up!
  10:01am Meesalikeu:

ps — this is where i put my request in for some king sunny ade :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:05am Ike:

I presume it was only lost to 91.1 FM listeners, yes? Sounded like the web listeners got it....
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:08am steveo:

yes, i believe i heard it on the stream; maybe the archive will have it?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:09am Ike:

The Robot has no dominion over the internet unless I'm horribly mistaken.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:09am Greg from ZONE 5:

Morning, Trouble & all!
  10:10am Meesalikeu:

did not hear it via the app — i got dead air and random music
  10:10am Malachy Egan:

I heard it on the stream.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:15am Ken From Hyde Park:

Don't you hate it when robots get triggered?
  10:16am Sean from Iowa:

Pop up player experience for me was a couple minutes of dead air that eventually gave way to the Mateo performance already in progress.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:18am maestroso:

@Sean that was my experience as well on the iphone app.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:18am Mick:

good morning kevlicki! i am going to go to the just seeds web site shortly to order/download some fantabulous imagery. DJ icepack needs to to go off to college with activist comfort...
  10:43am kevlicki:

Awe, that’s fantastic!
In years past we thought about doing a college campus tour to hustle our posters to students out of a van. I became a farmer instead!

  10:49am kevlicki:

It’s also acceptable to download designs from our graphics page
And print them out for personal use, like when your progeny leaves the nest, and their dorm room will need decorating!
  10:51am kevlicki:

Thank you Linda!
Philippe, I think Mark would agree it’s Ok to view Instagram, without an account while connected thru your VPN of choice

yes, you can check things out on instagram without an account. there's a link to the justseeds site & kevlicki's own work. marvelous.

I have a "Woodstock" brand typewriter....I'll have to play it today of all days!!
Avatar 10:57am jt:

Ever notice that just about everything issued on 10" is really weird? Chosen format for the odd-lot sounds..
Avatar 10:58am Linda Lee:

probably the easiest format to produce on an outsider budget, jt.
Avatar 11:00am Linda Lee:

2 fmu djs do the impossible & make me sorry i'm outside the metro area now: Fabio & Trouble!
Avatar 11:00am jt:

I am thinking it might be more expensive than a standard 12" to produce, but I know nothing of that industry...
Avatar 11:02am Linda Lee:

see, i'm guessing it isn't. i think every rotation is more money in production.
Avatar 11:03am Linda Lee:

10 " at 33 or 12" at 33, it's cheaper. 8" at 45 rpm, i bet it's also cheaper! magnetic tape, well...
Avatar 11:04am Linda Lee:

you still need masters.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:05am crateslinger:

@Linda Lee - WFMU used to be a good reason to stay in NYC, but now with the internet, there is really no reason at all - unless you're 25 years old, rich, and want to get drunk every night.
Avatar 11:05am jt:

ah-ha learn something new everyday..thanks LL!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:05am crateslinger:

Oh, and really good looking - can't forget that. NYC is for the beautiful children.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:06am Greg from ZONE 5:

This is beeeee-autiful
Avatar 11:07am Linda Lee:

@crateslinger ~ it really was a neighborhood plus when we first found fmu in the mid 80s! that's the last time i was drunk & 25..
Avatar 11:08am jt:

crateslinger brings up a good point... only linger in the metro area since my 'living situation' job/ hosing actually ties me to the BK..otherwise, I would go very far away...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:08am Michael 98145:

i will probably never hear this station over the airwaves
  11:08am yes:

Avatar 11:08am Linda Lee:

funny how regional lines are blurred for culture, but not for economics. money still rules your physical body.
  11:08am yes:

This is wonderful
Avatar 11:09am Linda Lee:

only proving that art is superior! :-D
Avatar 11:10am jt:

The radio picked up WFMU in '88 from a trash-found Sanyo receiver so we knew the place was worth staying in for awhile...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:11am melinda:

I''m grateful for streaming but miss listening to terrestrial radio. My stereo is quite unreliable and that's how my listening habits became computer-centic and I got hooked on FMU. @Michael when I visited Jersey City the first time I was able to listen on a boombox with not-great reception, but a good radio (or any radio) usually isn't part of the lodgings one finds.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:11am melinda:

centric, not centic
Avatar 11:12am Linda Lee:

that's marvelous. :-)
we didn't find the fmu airwaves 'til we moved from manhattan to the faraway wilds of williiamsburg in 85, where north & south were still divided by color. we white chicks took a place on the border. it was really lovely.
Avatar 11:13am Linda Lee:

everyone in the hood was nice to us. just wonderful.
Avatar 11:15am βrian:

Trouble a des messages pour nous.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:15am Greg from ZONE 5:

At home I always listen on an actual radio. Couldn't tell you why I prefer it. I think because you can listen to anything on the web, but you can only listen to radio on the radio.
  11:15am kevlicki:

I grew up in the broadcast range and it’s a region I’m struggling to avoid getting get priced out of. Curiously housemate just pointed out to me that 91.9 comes in with more clarity than the 91.1 frequency at our apt in Brooklyn.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:17am Trouble:

ha@ brian. je suis pas la
Avatar 11:17am jt:

Yeah, different times then, demographic has changed so much.., Since mid-80's. Would never move here now but contently rooted now.. LL, remember when your friends in the East Village wouldn't even visit you in W/burg ? They were all like," We aren't going THERE! YOU come here!"
  11:17am kevlicki:

Streaming now as I’m commuting to work, in the 90.1 range
Avatar 11:19am Linda Lee:

kevlicki, i'm on my 5th gentrification price-out, after 20 years as a full time resident here, 30 part time. i'm in sullivan county near the ulster border. what's happening here is incredible. who in god's name has all this *money*?
Avatar 11:19am Hubig Pie:

You could listen to tv on the radio in the swinging '60's
Avatar 11:20am Linda Lee:

i do indeed, jt! :-)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:24am Michael 98145:

always enjoy your show, Ms Trouble
  11:24am kevlicki:

Linda, “tell me about it”, I grew up in Goshen, have lived all around the Hudson Valley, Manhattan, the Bronx and Brooklyn. Would love to settle back in Ulster County. It’s really difficult competing for real estate with people that seem to have ungodly amounts of cash.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:25am thedunkel / el carnicero francés:

Goood morning Trouble and Trouble-ites!
  11:25am MG:

Trouble, you are on FIRE today! Bringing me out of my Thursday funk.
Avatar 11:26am still b/p:

Same around here. More new upscale condos. Then more, replacing more modest rentals/homes. Then more. Market not exhausted yet, apparently.

@ Hubig -- I had a transistor radio from 80s or 90s that included TV channel audio. Tried to use it to check news on one of the TV stations one day a couple years ago and realized, "Ohhhh, yeah. Analog TV signal gone, baby, gone."
  11:26am kevlicki:

Linda, it’s amazing, all your previous landlords are selling their brooklyn properties and buying in The Hudson Valley!
Avatar 11:26am Linda Lee:

my god i know. i know. even the affordable fixer-uppers are being scooped up by flippers, while this fractures actual communities. it's horrible, frankly.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:27am Trouble:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:28am Trouble:

god morning aaron: good luck at prep in the fall!!

5 gentrification price-outs since 1978! where i venture bravely, the money follows. i should be getting residuals! :-D
Avatar 11:29am CarB:

this rocks
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:29am crateslinger:

Here's how I see it... Every small town in America has at least a few talented, beautiful young people from families of means. All these people move to New York, then ten years later, they buy a place upstate so their children can play with crawdads.
Avatar 11:31am Linda Lee:

don't let the kids play with the locals, though! that's bad news.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:31am crateslinger:

I came to New York to get away from them...

oh, and to throw bottles at kops.
  11:31am kevlicki:

LL, that, combined with renting thru Airbnb redices the amount of housing available to longer term residents. It’s a real rupture in “community”.
Im quite determined to settle where I have that sense of place, hopefully it can be maintained long enough to enjoy it.
Avatar 11:31am Linda Lee:

they might learn something their parents prefer them not to learn.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:33am tim from champaign:

Hi everybody! I love this Byron Lee and the Dragonaires. Very Metal Box era PIL.
Avatar 11:34am Linda Lee:

absolutely right on, kevlicki. i'm still on the hunt as well. this year i've discovered what 'community' actually means, in a rural way. the people of an authentic community rely on one another for their survival. community is *not* a bunch of second homes within a few miles' drive.
Avatar 11:34am βrian:

We're getting hammered by it in Madison, too. The dilapidated box across the street went from ~$220 K in value to $550K in 4 years.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:34am crateslinger:

@LL - assimilation is not a goal, but a weakness.
  11:37am emily:

I've read half of it, Trouble. Maybe I could finish it before my semester starts.
Avatar 11:37am Linda Lee:

i think it assimilation can strengthen a community if the resources becoming available to the community increase, but assimilation always seems to move in one direction only: away from the community & into the bank.
Avatar 11:38am Linda Lee:

mid-atlantic appalachia may be next for me. just don't tell anyone. :-D
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:38am Phillippe Bastille:

Not a lot left to gentrify around here. Its either already gentrified or needs to be torn down.
  11:38am emily:

my day, my week, has been unusual. Like my computer, I, too am fragmented
  11:38am justinseeling:

marlon james as guest dj would be incredible! please make this happen! glad you finished "7 killings", trouble!
Avatar 11:39am Linda Lee:

Phillippe, you'd be surprised how valuable 'needs to be torn down' becomes for those with unlimited funds..
  11:40am Listener Robert:

@ still b/p Is that station, WNYX (?), still around that was using analog (NTSC) TV channel 6 (with video at low power) to transmit audio at the bottom of the range of FM broadcast band receivers? They had an all-weekend format of Indo-Caribbean.
Avatar 11:40am northguineahills:

I remember until 2002 the Bedford Ave was a ghost town after dark....
  11:43am frenchee:

Trouble, you might try contacting Marlon James through his publisher? I talked to him at the Brooklyn Book Fair several years ago and he was splendid but a little bit skittish. I think he lives in Minnesota? and he's on twitter. I would love to hear that show, btw. I still have fond memories of Mike Lupica interviewing guest DJ George Pelecanos.....
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:43am tim from champaign:

I'm intrigued about Marlon James now. Looks like my local library has a number of his books.
Avatar 11:43am Linda Lee:

not now, ngh?
i worked in the neighborhood in 81-82. it was really very nice. a real homey feel. the italian bakery, the salvation army. after the factory closed in the evenings the quiet street was lovely.
  11:45am frenchee:

@tim from c: 7 killings is great but it's a commitment! He also has done some graphic novels and a sort of sci-fi title.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:47am tim from champaign:

@frenchee - thanks! With music, books and movies, I can stick with something for the long haul. Sometimes, the longer the better!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:48am Trouble:

merci@frenchee: i am working on his publisher. just thought i would go for the friend angle, it has worked b4. i got maira kalman on through a listener..
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:52am sphere:

Avatar 11:53am Linda Lee:

calvin keys: perfect for pulling me from mopey regret into a new day! again, thank you!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:54am Michael 98145:

I know many folks are all for elimination of all zoning (isn't that the Texas model?), but turning the house you bought into a private hotel just doesn't seem correct somehow.
Avatar 11:54am Linda Lee:

time is short & moves through us like music! can we take what we require from it before it's gone?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:54am Michael 98145:

thanks again, Trouble
Avatar 11:56am duke:

Listening while working, but I had to say I really like this Calvin Keys cut.
Avatar 11:56am Linda Lee:

@Michael 98145 ~ it may make sense economically, but not in terms of community. those passing through the neighborhood just don't care to know who lives around them. not really.
Avatar 11:56am still b/p:

I don't think TV stations are allowed to do anything in analog broadcasting anymore. So, that NY operation not my area, but I think them days are done. In many markets, the local channel 6 signal was picked up low on the FM dial.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:56am Ken From Hyde Park:

Isn't the Texas model "Build it on the flood plain, what could possibly go wrong?"
Thanks for the fun today, Trouble.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:57am Phillippe Bastille:

@Linda you're right. when I actually think about it. I never envisioned one person buying up miles of shoreline in Baltimore but Kevin Plank found a way to do it
