I play music that is old and that is new. Some of it is digital while some is analog. It is from many different countries; sometimes it is loud and at other times it is quiet.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:01pm listener james from westwood:

Afternoon, Mayuko and all!
Avatar 12:01pm Mayuko:

If you're thinking you are only hearing the noise from your AC right now that's actually my show, probably.
Avatar 12:02pm Mayuko:

Good afternoon, my radio family fred and james!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:05pm listener james from westwood:

I once awakened from a nap with FMU in the background and thought my AC was indeed on the fritz!
Avatar 12:06pm rbrt:

my headphone cable has been making this sound all week, but I love it :D
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:07pm Ken From Hyde Park:

One might also confuse this with sound recorded in an airline cabin. Good afternoon, Mayuko and listenerds.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:07pm listener james from westwood:

:googles Rev. Tanimoto:: Oh goodness.
Avatar 12:08pm fred:

My neighbors just came back from Tunisia and brought me a plate of pastries. I'm very partial to the rose flavored ones
Avatar 12:09pm Mayuko:

@james haha! did that happen on a Friday afternoon?
Avatar 12:10pm rbrt:

“look into the face of atomic power” cut to nail polish ad
Avatar 12:10pm Mayuko:

Welcome, rbrt, and Ken!! Thanks for tuning in.
Avatar 12:10pm coelacanth∅:

hello Mayuko and all
Avatar 12:11pm rbrt:

hi hi
  12:12pm chresti in sf:

Hi Mayakovsky and verti gogo
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:12pm listener james from westwood:

Oh holy shit!!
Avatar 12:13pm coelacanth∅:

(what james said)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:13pm listener james from westwood:

"the bomb was dropped" Interesting use of the passive voice.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:16pm listener james from westwood:

The cheer in his voice at "Where were you when the bomb fell?" is jarring!
Avatar 12:16pm Mayuko:

Thanks for tuning in, coelacanth∅ and chresti!!
Avatar 12:17pm holland oats:

hello all - adding a little chill to summer
Avatar 12:18pm fred:

The music behind the narrative was disturbing
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:19pm listener james from westwood:

I wonder if that choice not to show their faces was theirs, or something imposed.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:20pm listener james from westwood:

Like America wouldn't be permitted to see their atomic original sin.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:20pm listener james from westwood:

(America's atomic original sin that is)
  12:22pm P-90:

This is fascinating. Konichiwa DJ Mayuko and friends.
  12:22pm Dave B.:

Hello Mayuko and Verters
Avatar 12:22pm coelacanth∅:

so this was in the midst of mccarthyism. i wonder if these people (the americans involved in this project) became targets of joseph mccarthy.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:22pm listener james from westwood:

Always odd to hear no zip codes on old addresses.
Avatar 12:23pm rbrt:

how in the world did we have enough technology to design an atom bomb in 1940’s. seems almost impossible
Avatar 12:23pm rbrt:

Play Vertigo sponsored by Prell shampoo
  12:24pm Dave B.:

Was shampoo solid in the past?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:24pm listener james from westwood:

There is no graceful segue from atomic war survivors to selling shampoo, but she gets a medal for trying.
Avatar 12:25pm coelacanth∅:

i used prell gel - in a tube like toothpaste, for all my teenage years. dried out my hair.
  12:25pm P-90:

I’m looking forward to some fine Prell product premiums at the next Marathon.
  12:25pm Dave B.:

I mean why do were they emphasizing the liquidity of Prell?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:26pm listener james from westwood:

rbrt: It's stunning to think our phones could have done the calculations needed for both the Manhattan Project and Bletchley Park in like half a day.
Avatar 12:26pm rbrt:

could of been like a bar of soap?
Avatar 12:27pm rbrt:

james: I know! it’s hard to wrap your head around it
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:27pm Granny Spicy Tuna (they/them):

hi, everyone! hey chresti (and franco twinkie!), welcome to fog city!
Avatar 12:27pm coelacanth∅:

shampoo in a solid bar is still available
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:28pm listener james from westwood:

It wouldn't surprise me if Prell were once solid. You can still buy solid soap designed for hair.

I had a feeling this was Negativland!! (Er, rectangular.)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:31pm listener james from westwood:

By odd coincidence, I'll be playing my synthpop Spotify mix while cleaning house after show, which includes, among other hits, OMD's "Enola Gay."
Avatar 12:31pm fred:

@ljfw: What amazes me is how most of that computing power goes to waste. I'd bet 80% at least of what computers/phones do is useless. And I'm not saying that about uses, just that increasing power lead to sloppy coding
Avatar 12:35pm coelacanth∅:

that's why, even though of course people making their way to earth's moon could easily have been faked, it doesn't make sense. i mean, why wouldn't we have the ability to get to the moon by the early 60s? the reason to fake it has to be there.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:40pm Granny Spicy Tuna (they/them):

it was a fake reason to fake a fake faked moon landing
Avatar 12:40pm rbrt:

hmm illegal art label
Avatar 12:41pm fred:

Totally unrelated: I had the weird experience today of reading some ethnography field notes, where I was one of the subjects
Avatar 12:42pm coelacanth∅:

Granny yes exactly! (i think!)
Avatar 12:43pm Mayuko:

@P-90 Haha! Hope they don't drop their sponsorship for my show until the marathon. (hallo!)
12:43pm chresti and Franco in sf:

Hi granny!
Avatar 12:44pm Mayuko:

@james @12:24 yes, it's not her fault. just like dropping the bomb was not Captain Lewis' decision.
Avatar 12:44pm Mayuko:

Hey, Dave B!!
12:45pm chresti and Franco in sf:

We slept through the fog, this morning, bright and sunny now
12:46pm chresti and Franco in sf:

Fantastic show mayuko!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:46pm Granny Spicy Tuna (they/them):

chresti and Franco in sf: you must be on the east side, from my place on Potrero Hill i can see a big looming fog bank creeping this way from the ocean, eeeyyyiiikkees!
  12:46pm P-90:

It’s called “Liquid Prelll” because like many shampoos in those days, it originally came as a gel in a toothpaste-like tube. So “Liquid Prell” was an additional product introduced as a liquid in a bottle.
Avatar 12:47pm Mayuko:

Thanks for tuning in, Granny Spicy Tuna!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:47pm Granny Spicy Tuna (they/them):

and this Terrine track is totally tickling my fancy
Avatar 12:48pm Mayuko:

Thank you, chresti! say hi to Franco for me!
Avatar 12:50pm fred:

Is that Terrine aka Claire from Amiens, France?
Avatar 12:53pm coelacanth∅:

i loved that fog when i was there.
north of sf (north of arcata actually) i slept in my car at a little-used look-out point, and would awaken to the sound of lots & lots -& lots of sea lions making a racket at the bottom of the cliff; but i never saw them. i'd eat then paint my car (had an "art car") until mid-afternoon...still never saw those animals down there.
Avatar 12:54pm JakeGould:

Hey Mayuko!!!

@ListenerJamesFromWestwood: And now I can yell at my phone to show me cat pictures and there you go!
Avatar 12:54pm Mayuko:

@fred yup! I think you told me about them. otherwise I don't know why I have kept myself posted with their new releases.
Avatar 12:54pm Mayuko:

Hola Jake!!
  12:56pm P-90:

Nothin starts of a nice summer Saturday afternoon like a little ritual killing...
Avatar 12:56pm fred:

@Mayuko: Probably last year when her set was my favorite one at Sonic Protest
Avatar 12:58pm Mayuko:

(I meant HER)
Avatar 12:58pm coelacanth∅:

there was a tv show on at the pub last evening about how the orcas are "ritualistically" hunting down white whales and ripping their livers out.
Avatar 12:59pm northguineahills:

Just finished a little disk golf....
Avatar 1:01pm coelacanth∅:

the gel was (is?) more concentrated (hence the name "prell concentrate") -required less packaging. makes more sense.
  1:06pm P-90:

I KNEW. you were going to say they found him in a bar!
Avatar 1:08pm coelacanth∅:

i've read that they knew it was the biggest bomb ever dropped but didn't comprehend *how* big, and exactly what it was going to do.
Avatar 1:08pm coelacanth∅:

(the pilots)
Avatar 1:08pm Sem:

Hello, Mayuko, and greets to Vertigo-goers.
Avatar 1:09pm coelacanth∅:

hey Sem
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:10pm Dropof Goldensun:

Hey Mayuko and Listenerds!
Avatar 1:10pm rbrt:

chaos lol
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:11pm listener james from westwood:

One's brain locking up when trying to comprehend Hiroshima, the Bomb, or the bizarre contrasts of the Cold War seen thru the lens of American TV culture is an entirely rational reaction.
1:11pm chresti and Franco in sf:

We’re in Alamo square/lower haight on divisadero @granny
Love Fog
Avatar 1:13pm coelacanth∅:

i don't understand how Mr.Tanimoto, and his wife much more so, survived until 1955 - with presumably a huge dose of radiation.
Avatar 1:13pm coelacanth∅:

hey Dropof
Avatar 1:15pm Sem:

Hiya, coel.
Avatar 1:16pm Mayuko:

Hi, northguineahills! Welcome, my radio family Sem!!! Thanks for tuning in, Dropof!!
Avatar 1:16pm northguineahills:

Nam June Paik, pre-clickied!
Avatar 1:23pm fred:

I really like this Noah Creshevsky track. Of course very appropriate for this stream
Avatar 1:31pm fred:

Is this from Brazil?
Avatar 1:33pm Mayuko:

@coelacanth∅ Japanese wikipedia says Mr. Tanimoto did suffer from the radiation sickness but miraculously recovered. It's pretty incredible since he was so close to the ground zero! Also people sometimes developed atomic bomb illness over very long periods of time, like 10 years 20 years, or even 70 years after the bomb, so some people didn't have visible symptom right after.
Avatar 1:34pm Mayuko:

@fred yup!
Avatar 1:36pm rbrt:

I have to think there were tons of people who just got “sick” later on but were never really diagnosed
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:37pm Michael 98145:

Yay~ Myuko!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:39pm Michael 98145:

will we ever be free of those weapons ??
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:42pm Dropof Goldensun:

I'm really digging this track. ( Caraquette )
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:44pm Ken From Hyde Park:

45* apparently just backed out of a nuclear treaty with the Russians (surprised?) and plans to develop more new missiles. Who voted for that?
Avatar 1:44pm Mayuko:

@rbrt "Prime Minister Shinzo Abe promised Aug. 5 to review criteria for recognizing whether hibakusha are eligible for special medical allowances. Of the 251,834 people certified as hibakusha as of March 31, the government has recognized only 2,242 as having radiation illnesses. Abe made the promise the day before the 62nd anniversary of the Hiroshima bombing. (Kyodo)" a piece of news from almost 10 years ago.
Avatar 1:44pm Mayuko:

Hallos, Michael 98145!!
Avatar 1:45pm Mayuko:

@Dropof The entire album is SO GOOD!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:46pm Michael 98145:

Avatar 1:52pm Mayuko:

@Michael 98145 ah thank you!!! I should update that thing... it's been overdue!

Avatar 1:55pm Mayuko:
