from late 1980s to late '90s the store i worked in played kcr frequently; but it got more and more lame/tame as time went on -which may've been okay for the customers but it bored the hell outa me, as i was getting more and more into David Ware (who was a customer there) and William Parker, Trane, Shepp, Anderson, Braxton...
but we never stopped putting on the rhythm review on saturday mornings.

@RRn63 do they jazz at times?

coelacanth∅: Were you referring to "Rhythm Revue" with Felix Hernandez? I also used to love that show and still have a fondness for it, but, yeah, continuous exposure to Duane, Evan, Kim, Small Change, Fine Wine, etc., etc., shows you there is so much more.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:42pm

Dave Sewelson is the bomb! he's funny and he has great guests on. (not last week so much, in my opinion! but usually)
6-22; 5-25; 2-23...some of my favorites...

...and yeh i knew i left off a big one -Fine Wine. it's hard to match that.

For Jazz that's mostly easy on the nerves but still real - there's a podcast out of Conn. called 'In the Groove'.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:46pm

so now i'm all fogged up was the rhythm revue kcr or bgo? i thin k it must've been bgo. (which in general made kcr look pretty wild!)

RR exactly. i'm, not sure i can always tell if a free player has the skills to play anything (Trane, Ware, Braxton...) or plays only "free jazz" because he/she really can't play "traditionally" well. i think i can.

John from florham park:

I love the fact you can learn a lot on the accu boards from other people thanks
Avatar 3:54pm
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

@coel: Question of course - does it matter?
Next: If you don't have traditional structure - you better come up w/ something quick together! Simply different skills...
Also: I tend to suspect a lot of 'Free' players come deeply from Roots Musics - Blues, Gospels...which is actually more Traditional anyhow! But then people like Braxton are frighteningly Theoretical...so too general...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:54pm
coelacanth∅:

Michael i agree; though he doesn't lean toward "free" jazz so much
Avatar 3:55pm
geezerette:

Hello, Fabio & gang!
WFMU is astonishingl I'd like even more jazz but all the DJs that play jazz here play the strongest, most original, most passionate jazz ever played. We have a jazz station in L.A.,KKJZ, that was really good but has devolved to a sort of top 40 jazz hits kind of thing.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:57pm
coelacanth∅:

RR a)certainly not, if i can't tell!

and i agree about Braxton. i love him when he's free and some other times but sometimes it seems pretty stiff to me.

But making the point about being Technical or not...
  4:00pm
John from florham park:

Hey fellow music fans there is a station from Miami called WDNA which plays a lot of jazz and one of the few decent things about south Florida
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:03pm
coelacanth∅:

...but maybe i *can* tell! maybe that's the freejazz that doesn't move me. (the majority of Brotzmann...) or moves me toward turning it off asap (the majority of Ayler...)
i do Love Braxton, as i've said...despite possible stiffness!

i do like Ayler. maybe cuz i was younger then.

i just cannot stand Ayler's tone. he makes it sound like a cheap toy horn!
that said, for his birthday, both Jeff and Sewelson played some Ayler tracks that i actually did like. i knew it was possible, so i waited for it and was rewarded.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:11pm

(and i am aware that my opinion about Ayler could not be a popular one with wfmu people)

RR i never heard Ayler until i was already third eye deep in David Ware and Ornette, in the 90s, decades after liking Trane and Cecil, which i got in to as a teenager. (so, an adult already) it's not his composition i don't like, it's his tone...and what seems to me to be severe limitations in his repertoire.
