Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:25am chresti:

it's 10:25 here in the PST zone
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:26am Scraps:

Aw! I'll listen! I got your email and read the NY Press Mustafio piece, which was v. interesting, but also, one of the two guys who made up Mustafio was named Lane Steinberg, which there is a very obscure but good and prolific power pop musician, who was sometimes lived in New York, and about the same age as the Mustafio Lane Steinberg. But I don't know; probably two separate people.
Avatar 1:26am northguineahills:

Phil Ochs!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:27am Scraps:

argh; I meant to type "power pop musician named Lane Steinberg"...
  1:28am rw:

I keep trying to get my somewhat younger friends (maybe in their early 40s) to listen to Phil Ochs but they won't do it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:32am Scraps:

I Ain't Marching Anymore!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:33am curtis_chaos_in_LA:

alrite already. I turned 50 this year. Columbus shout out!
  1:33am Nick:

Elephant 6 was a label too!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:34am curtis_chaos_in_LA:

Pleasures of the Harbor ranks high on my list
  1:34am rw:

I haven't seen Hee-Haw in years but I'm guessing it might not fly these days in the PC department.

Congrats curtis! Welcome to the other side!
  1:35am Nick:

Yeah, early Apples in Stereo, Neutral Milk Hotel, Olivia Tremor Control, etc. :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:36am Drunken Creep:

Phil Ochs is a legend, a very interesting and somewhat tragic figure. He's got a lot of great tracks, and an interesting musical evolution. He later began calling himself John Butler Train and let some demons out under that name. Bless him and his contributions to the world.
Avatar 1:37am Bill Mac:

@Nick Were Lilys part of that group of artists?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:38am chresti:

I had an Elk Power cd and Of Montreal, haven't listened in years.

I can no longer stay up past midnight without paying for it the next day.
  1:40am Nick:

I think Lilys were on Slumberland?? Early Secret Square and Elf Power were also on Elephant 6. So many amazing releases. Essex Green were great too.
Avatar 1:41am Bill Mac:

I remember Essex Green.... I plead ignorant on Secret Square, hence my ignorant remark at the beginning of the show.
  1:43am Nick:

Secret Square was a duo if I remember correctly...My dad was really into Phil Ochs in the '60s. I'm 50+ now too...welcome to old age Curtis ha
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:44am Scraps:

also Minders, Sunshine Fix, Marbles, Beulah, and the Music Tapes
Avatar 1:45am Bill Mac:

Marbles was the Schneider solo project. I'll need to catch up on some of these other bands.
Avatar 1:46am northguineahills:

a guy from Of Montreal cheated on a girl I was dating at the time (it had only been 2.5 months).
  1:48am rw:

DC, Thanks! I hadn't known of the John Butler Train incarnation. Will do some internet sleuthing...

My personal favorite Ochs LPs are Pleasures of the Harbor, Tape from California and Rehearsals for Retirement. In case that's worth mentioning.
Avatar 1:50am Bill Mac:

Thanks rw, that's what these shows are all about for me - I'll play stuff and there's always someone that know more about the artist than I do.
Avatar 1:52am northguineahills:

@rw: Read, "But There for a Fortune", by Michael Schumacher. A nice (and obviously sad) biography of Phil Ochs....
  1:53am Nick:

@northguineahills, bummer sorry to hear that
Avatar 1:55am northguineahills:

@Nick, it was worth it, I met my wife on a dj trip to Mexico 4 months later....
Avatar 1:56am Hubig Pie:

To the moon, Alice
  1:57am Nick:

@ngh Wow, great ending to that story! Just goes to show that sometimes things aren't meant to be for a reason...
Avatar 1:58am Bill Mac:

How do Mr Pie!
Avatar 2:00am northguineahills:

@Nick: Tru dat!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:23am mauri:

espresso dinah
Avatar 2:25am Bill Mac:

I knew I heard you breathing out there!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:28am mauri:

It took longer than usually to feel awake this morning. Enjoying the show a lot mr. mac.
Avatar 2:30am Bill Mac:

Thanks Mauri, hey is the sun burning your ass as much as it is mine over here?
Avatar 2:32am Brian in UK:

Mornin' Bill and late night lurkers.
Avatar 2:33am Bill Mac:

Hah, I was just thinking of you gramps
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:33am Scraps:

i've heard this version, Prince singing his own song, a few times now, and first, it's a beautiful song, which comes out in Prince's version; but second, my god, it also reminds me that Sinéad O'Connor's version is just awesome.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:34am Drunken Creep:

RW: Pleasures of the harbor is an all time great. Such precision and concentrated songs. Very inspiring, especially coming from a folk singer and his eventual story. Debe Dalton, a searchably solid and excellent friend, met Ochs twice. Once as Ochs and once as Butler. The story is one was energizingly nice to be near, and the other was bitterly painful. Bless the entirity
Avatar 2:34am Brian in UK:

Come by my side
Stand as close as the air.

Love that operning line of Phil Ochs' song 'Changes'.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:35am mauri:

It sure is! I think my forehead got burnt last weekend too and I threw my hats away when cleaning up stuff I dont use. Heyy BrianinUK.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:37am Scraps:

i'll try, thanks!
Avatar 2:39am Brian in UK:

Phil Ochs Greatest Hits is possibly my favourite (it's like saying who is your best child when selecting records). Very autobiographical.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:40am Drunken Creep:

Back in the day I covered a phil ochs track myspace.com... , a song called William Butler Yeats Visits Lincoln Park and Escapes Unscathed. I wonder if that melody influenced elton john's goodbye yellow brick road, its about the same hook and Ochs was first with it
Avatar 2:42am Bill Mac:

@DC I'll try checking this out after the show thanks
Avatar 2:43am Brian in UK:

Bill, summers here with the fill-ins.
Avatar 2:45am Bill Mac:

Definitely pop in for the Sat. Aug 31st, 6am - 9am show - if you can
  2:45am rw:

Ha! Could be. But the Ochs melody is WAY more haunting!
  2:46am rw:

Thank you Mr. Mac for staying up all night for us! Always a pleasure to catch your fill-ins!
Avatar 2:47am Brian in UK:

@rw first time hearing Ochs was on John Peel's show circa Oct '68. Outside a small circle of friends.
Avatar 2:47am Bill Mac:

That's funny rw.... Thank you!
Avatar 2:49am Brian in UK:

Bill, I would like to thank you for getting me out of bed early on a Saturday morning.
  2:49am rw:

BiUK, I think that was my first Ochs too! But closer to a decade later.
Avatar 2:51am Brian in UK:

It's funny but you listen to some singers in your youth and somehow know that they will be with you for a long time.
Avatar 2:54am Bill Mac:

That was too quick! Thanks for rattlin' the cage with me here! See you for these two dates?
Sun. Jul 28th, 8pm - 10pm: Bill Mac fills in for Gaylord Fields
Sat. Aug 31st, 6am - 9am: Bill Mac fills in for Jeffrey Davison
Avatar 2:55am Brian in UK:

Bill, those thirty minutes just flew by. Thanks and drive safely.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:56am Scraps:

that's one of my fave Ween songs
  2:57am rw:

Thanks to Mrs. Mac too for posting all those album jackets!! (I believe that's her doing)
