it's a law of physics that at least one Rod McKuen record lurks in the midst of any given stack of dusty record crates
Avatar #1 Hit Supporter Marathon 2021 Swag For Life Member 11:32am listener 126464:

can count on The Queers playing in a town near you at least 2x a year
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:33am nostrangerer:

Have you considered that they were influenced by the same source as the Beatles, Buddy Holly?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:34am Gaylord Fields:

Considering that Delbert McClinton taught John Lennon the finer points in playing blues harmonica, turnabout is fair play.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:35am Granny Spicy Tuna (they/them):

Am i bragging or complaining when i share that i have a ridiculous supply of Rod McKuen albums in my collection? I even paid for some of them! Maybe it's a cry for help? And yet, there's an undeniable affection i feel for that gentle weirdo.

One of Wire's great almost pure pop moments -- the band's lyrics were always a bit inscrutable, I'd say.

Avatar 12:28pm Juke Joint Jonny:

What else do you need for a song?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:35pm nostrangerer:

Late addition but thank you for the Rod McKuen feature. Back in the day I found his recordings and books too intolerably middlebrow and sentimental pandering lacking meaningful content. I had missed the humorous aspect of some of it (though the humor may only be available in retrospect). Perhaps us cultural elitists would have been less incensed if his arrangers were more creative.
Whatever, his work was undoubtedly a significant part of the 60s to 70s pop culture.
