@Daniel: The Caretaker is also AKA (DJ) V/VM.
  9:57pm Carmichael:

I liked the mashed potato improv he did.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:57pm melinda:

It did not have the impact upon me now that it did seeing it on a large screen at age 6, the music was at times old Hollywood cheese, but the tonal code communication was still moving, as was the final chief alien to emerge from the spaceship and give the hand signals.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:57pm Daniel Blumin:

Hola, coela! ngh, ha!
Avatar 10:01pm coelacanth∅:

i don't remember close encounters at all. i know i liked it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:02pm Daniel Blumin:

I enjoyed it when seeing it in the theater as a child. Sadly, it was too damn long fer my wee bladder! This I do remember!
Avatar 10:02pm coelacanth∅:

oh, i remember the tone sequence. i never forgot that.
Avatar 10:02pm TDK60:

that tone sequence was so groovy...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:03pm ultradamno:

The guy knew how to plate some mashed potatoes with pinache. I remember that.
Avatar 10:04pm coelacanth∅:

i wonder how many times i've played it on a musical instrument
(and how many different instruments)
Avatar 10:04pm TDK60:

doo dee doo, dum deeee [?]
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:04pm melinda:

@coel me too. I forgot much of it. Back then the alien encounter was awe inspiring, now it just seems really sweet. Seems the Hollywood take on aliens became more sinister after that.
Avatar 10:04pm coelacanth∅:

Yes that's it!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:06pm ultradamno:

Also, that stretch of road is like thirty minutes away from me. www.thestarpress.com...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:06pm melinda:

The tone sequence still holds up, I think it's a cool concept. I did remember the mashed potatoes and giant mound he built in his living room.
Avatar 10:06pm coelacanth∅:

well, except e.t.!
Avatar 10:07pm JakeGould:

Spielberg is the only director I know of to make films about aliens showing up on Earth and not being enemies: Close Encounters and E.T.
Avatar 10:07pm coelacanth∅:

ohhh yeaaahhhh. mashed potatoes.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:07pm melinda:

At one point the spaceship responds with a more elaborate tone sequence that just sounds like a tuba riffing, which didn't hold up.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:08pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Was supposed to have a lot to do w/ 'real' UFO 'research' - but that doesn't do much for me now...The wonder of cosmic lights is still there I guess... Spielberg knows Spectacle - but by that token was one of the early Blockbusters as we now know them - which is not all good...& I'm a SciFi kid...
Avatar 10:09pm khd:

spinach blasters
Avatar 10:09pm coelacanth∅:

i think of that game "simon" when i think of those tones
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:10pm melinda:

Also, "Muncie, Indiana" looked more like southern California. The spot where the encounterers hang out to see if the UFOs return looked like it may have appeared in Rockford Files or other shows of the 70s.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:10pm chresti:

Sounds good Daniel.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:12pm Chop Scott:

  10:13pm Carmichael:

Thanks, Daniel. Now I feel informed ... :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:13pm ultradamno:

Better that the TV, I think it was Angel where they go to "Muncie" and spend the whole time driving up steep Hollywood hills.

The original 1976 “The Bad News Bears” really holds up well as an adult. Much better actually when you get what the jokes mean. Ditto with “Pee Wee’s Big Adventure.”
Avatar 10:17pm coelacanth∅:

there are petitions circulating online (at least) to prevent the scumbag in chief from using 2.5 million $ from the national parks budget to fund his ego march - for anyone who knows enough and cares...

BananaSplits are now serial killers or some shot...
Avatar 10:20pm coelacanth∅:

i've never seen pee wee's big adventure (or pee wee's playhouse for that matter) but a few minutes here and there, and i get the impression that -like spongebob, it's only *sort of* for children.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:21pm melinda:

@Jake my dad took us to see Animal House and I was only 7 but I loved it too! Some things were over my head but there was much to appreciate.
Avatar 10:22pm khd:

pee wees big adventure is fucking awesome
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:22pm melinda:

We bought the soundtrack and that was where I first heard Sam Cooke.
  10:23pm Carmichael:

I loved the quote at the beginning from the college founder, Emil Faber: “Knowledge is good.”
Avatar 10:23pm JakeGould:

“Pee Wee’s Big Adventure” holds up really well. The last 20 seconds of this clip is still one of the funniest things ever. youtu.be...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:23pm chresti:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:23pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Animal House is a little like Mel Brooks...National Lampoon (now that MAD is going down...) Python made us forget a lot of that - kinda like The Beatles in Musics...
Avatar 10:24pm JakeGould:

Sorry to hear Mad Magazine is gone. Now where will I get all of my Spiro Angew jokes from?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:24pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Movie I've never seen and know nothing about, but curious to watch at some point: Trainspotting.
Avatar 10:29pm khd:

the next time you drink too much and realize it too late, watch Animal House
Avatar 10:29pm JakeGould:

@melinda: Doesn’t hold up well at all. “Back to the Future” as well; aged very badly. And as much as I personally like “Fast Times at Ridgemont High” it’s not much but nostalgia in today’s world.
Avatar 10:30pm coelacanth∅:

i think i've seen parts of animal house many times, never saw it beginning to end.
Avatar 10:30pm khd:

next time you do heroin too much and realize it too late, watch Trainspotting
Avatar 10:30pm JakeGould:

Also, “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off?” I never liked it when it came out. And as an adult I can’t stand it even more. What a smug, entitled little brat Ferris is.
Avatar 10:31pm coelacanth∅:

i really disliked trainspotting at the time. don't remember anything about it.
Avatar 10:31pm khd:

i'd like to see meatballs again for early bill murray
Avatar 10:32pm khd:

next time you crash your dad's rare ferrari and realize it too late, watch ferris buellers day off
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:32pm melinda:

Trainspotting was interesting. My dad and brother-in-law went to a screening to kill time while the women in the family were at a baby shower, thinking it was actually about train spotters. Bit of a downer I think.
Avatar 10:32pm coelacanth∅:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:33pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Like all made for TV - tho TV is supposed to better now...A lot of 'Art' is Entertainment & good exactly once - Warholian principle - disposable market Pop...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:34pm melinda:

@khd that's partly why I'd watch it. Also Chris Makepeace is good. His other movie, My Bodyguard, does hold up.
Avatar 10:34pm khd:

also watch it for richard edson's performance, probably his best work after sonic youth
Avatar 10:34pm coelacanth∅:

yeah i'll watch a downer movie for free once in a while but Fuck paying for a bummer
Avatar 10:34pm khd:

yeah, i kinda want to see my bodyguard again, it's been a long time
  10:35pm Carmichael:

I loved the scene where Belushi grabs the folk singer’s guitar and destroys it, then mutters “sorry”.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:35pm melinda:

@Jake I felt the same way about Ferris Bueller. Not a big fan of John Hughes in general, except for Say Anything.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:35pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Well - we all know too much about Addiction now right? It was a marker I suppose... The Anti- Hard Day' s Night they said - altho that's Spinal Tap in another sense.
Avatar 10:35pm coelacanth∅:

(i'll assume "my bodyguard" is different than "bodyguard")
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:36pm melinda:

@Carm that's the best. Still makes me laugh. "I gave my love a cherry..."
Avatar 10:37pm coelacanth∅:

(since i cannot imagine wanting to see "bodyguard" twice, if at all)
  10:37pm Carmichael:

That folk singer was Stephen Bishop. Somehow, that makes it funnier.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:38pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Animal House was about that immediate PreBeatles social space - ColdWar, Race, Sex, Class...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:38pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:38pm melinda:

My Bodyguard was a sincere film about teens in Chicago before John Hughes started making his stuff.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:40pm ultradamno:

Stranger Than Paradise and best acting. He was also in This World, Then the Fireworks and evidently played trumpet for The Offs for a bit.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:43pm melinda:

@khd it was filmed in Chicago. Also Joan Cusack's first major film.
Avatar 10:43pm JakeGould:

You know what film I am pretty sure I saw a few times at friend’s houses on cable but barely remember past it being extremely weird and creepy? “Porky’s.” I don’t think that’s aged well.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:44pm melinda:

Breaking Away definitely holds up.
Avatar 10:45pm coelacanth∅:

i saw either porky's or a sequel to it and went and did something else before it ended

Wonder if “Patton” is watchable in 2019? I never saw it but it actually creeped me out as a kid. My dad liked the fact George C. Scott refused to accept an Oscar for it in 1970. He hated the idea of the Oscars and said, “The whole thing is a goddamn meat parade. I don't want any part of it.”

One night Chresti and I stumbled into an outdoor screening of Weird Science while looking for something to eat. We were dismayed by the reverential tone of the young (to us) audience. Some time later I mentioned this to a friend who was the art director on the movie. He said "Tell me about it! I had tons of stuff we used on the movie, and I threw it all in the trash! Now the collectors with piles of cash won't leave me alone!"
