I play music that is old and that is new. Some of it is digital while some is analog. It is from many different countries; sometimes it is loud and at other times it is quiet.

Good afternoon from the wobbly morning!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:53am listener james from westwood:

Afternoon-ish, Mayuko and all! Got home just as the first stirring of thunder echoed from the north. Hoping our area keeps power long enough for me to hear your whole show!
Avatar 12:01pm Linda Lee:

hello! looking forward to an amazing show!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:01pm fred:

Good afternoon Mayuko and listenerds
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:03pm Dropof Goldensun:

Greetings Mayuko and Listenerds!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:04pm fred:

@chresti: did the earthquakes reach your area?
  12:06pm rw:

Good morning! Or afternoon or whatever it is. Two songs in and I'm already hooked.
Avatar 12:08pm Linda Lee:

hey there Dropof! hope all's well by you today!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:09pm fred:

@rw: same here. I have a feeling I'll end up cllicky-starring the whole show
I think Akuphone is a French label based not far from my favorite venue, but I'm likely to be confusing it with another label
Avatar 12:10pm Mayuko:

Hello, everyone!!! SO happy to be back on the radio and have you all here!!!!!!!!! Thanks for tuning in!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:11pm chresti:

We feel the ones that are 6+ magnitude, last night, we could feel the 7.1-it a was a long and gentle moving sensation, like being on water, at first it feels like having a dizzy spell. The epicenter is over a hundred miles from where we are.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:12pm Franco Twinkie:

Good morning Mayuko! There were 1,272 earthquakes in California in the past 24 hours. And to put a good flavor topping of shit on everything, the air in Los Angeles is toxic with smoke from all the fireworks.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:12pm fred:

I was wondering what the Blue Stockings show title was about, but with the added clue of Seito I think I get it now
Avatar 12:13pm Mayuko:

@fred yup, it's that label in your neighborhood. akuphone.com...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:14pm chresti:

I have always wanted a pair of blue silk stockings
Avatar 12:15pm Linda Lee:

that's just the way i remember my first earthquake on malibu, chresti. glad you're staying safe.
Avatar 12:17pm Mayuko:

I was worried about all you California listenerds! Glad to see you guys are safe.
Avatar 12:17pm Mayuko:

"Bluestocking (青鞜 Seitō) was Japan’s first all-women literary magazine created in 1911 by a group of five women. Haru Raichō Hiratsuka, Yasumochi Yoshiko, Mozume Kazuko, Kiuchi Teiko, and Nakano Hatsuko founded the Japanese Bluestocking Society (青鞜社 Seitō-sha) to promote the equal rights of women through literature and education. The magazine they developed was designed to articulate women’s self-awareness and the gender-based societal limitations they faced, but its promotion of early feminist beliefs through controversial publications caused it to be banned by Japanese kokutai for being “disruptive to society”. Bluestocking was in print only in Japan from 1911–1916 but the response it caused is credited as prompting the pioneering movement of Japanese feminism."
Avatar 12:19pm Linda Lee:

so much happening out west now.
Avatar 12:21pm Mayuko:

The music compilation Seitō from Akuphone:
"Seitō {青鞜} gathers Japanese female artists from various electronic and experimental music fields.... this collection recorded between 2017 and 2019 exposes the richness of the contemporary Japanese underground music scene. The title refers to a cult feminist magazine printed in Japan in the 1910s... All tracks issued for the first time."
Avatar 12:21pm Linda Lee:

the bluestockings were Victorian intellectuals & aristocrats, too! the name was non-gender-specific at first, but women came to own the term.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:21pm listener james from westwood:

From how I was able to feel the Virginia earthquake in, what, 2011, from ~340 miles away, I was all the more worried for folks' safety and sense of calm within similar range and closer to the two CA earthquakes.
Avatar 12:22pm Mayuko:

Yes, Linda is right, that's where the Japanese women from 1911 took the name from for their magazine.
Avatar 12:22pm Linda Lee:

how great! international bluestockings.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:23pm listener james from westwood:

We have a wee fault along the Ramapo range near here, that whispers now and again, not usually enough to shake things.
Avatar 12:25pm Linda Lee:

loving the music, Mayuko! so glad to hear it. thank you!
Avatar 12:26pm Linda Lee:

you help make living lovely today!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:26pm fred:

I only remembered the name Seito from reading about early feminism, but they look more interesting than I thought. I'll have to dig deeper after the show
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:27pm Dropof Goldensun:

Love that 303 bassline!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:29pm Dropof Goldensun:

Hey Londa Lee! All good here. Busy at work. How are you today? My new pup is quite feisty!
Avatar 12:29pm Linda Lee:

fabulous. just fantastic.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:29pm Dropof Goldensun:

Oops! Linda!
Avatar 12:30pm Linda Lee:

regarding feminism & feminist history, there's *always* more than meets the eye. that's the rule. :-D
Avatar 12:31pm Linda Lee:

i like Londa too. feisty pup, eh? on your toes much? :-D
Avatar 12:34pm Linda Lee:

adore everything about 'gabriel'. superb!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:34pm Dropof Goldensun:

She's doing very well. Let's us know when she's gotta go and she's only 10 weeks old. So far my cat will only investigate from a distance when she's in her crate. As soon as we take her out (on leash) he goes off into another room. Yes, on my toes! Keeping my mind off the fact my daughter is in London for 6 weeks! Nervous dad here.
Avatar 12:35pm Linda Lee:

oh my! what's she doing in London?
things sound just fine at home with the creatures. just make sure you let the cat know he's not second fiddle..
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:37pm Dropof Goldensun:

He hissed at me when I tried to pet him after we came back with the pup but now he's ok. I'm spending a lot of time with him when I'm home. He's fine with me now.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:37pm melinda:

hallo Mayuko and friends
  12:37pm rw:

Well... the music's sounding great and it's good to see y'all here but I've got to head out. Safe and sound for the time being anyway. Linda, that's a good rule to remember! Mayuko! Keep the Vertigo vessel drifting as only you know how and have a good weekend everyone. Will be listening to the archive from the freeway sometime this week!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:38pm Dropof Goldensun:

LL- She's taking summer classes in London.
Avatar 12:39pm Mayuko:

Hey thanks rw! ALSO I WILL EMAIL YOU
Avatar 12:39pm Linda Lee:

wow. that's got to be exciting. what kinds of classes?
Avatar 12:39pm Mayuko:

Hi melinda!!
  12:41pm rw:

Hang on... before I go, Dropof, your daughter is in London?? How old is she? I'd be nervous too.

Ha! Mayuko, please do!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:41pm Ken From Hyde Park:

Blah, hot and humid. Would enjoy another trip to Play del Vertigo this afternoon.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:42pm Dropof Goldensun:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:44pm coelacanth∅:

greetings Mayuko and all
  12:44pm rw:

DG, she'll be fine. That sounds super exciting actually. It will be something she'll remember for the rest of her life! You're a great dad!!
Avatar 12:45pm Linda Lee:

just ask her to contact you regularly & trust in her good sense.
nothing else to do, really. she's there.
Avatar 12:47pm Linda Lee:

she's got to be responsible for herself.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:48pm Doug Schulkind:

Hello, Mayuko and all playverts!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:48pm Otis Fodder:

Hello Mayuko, happy to be listening live. Hello all as well and a happy Saturday to you!
Avatar 12:49pm Linda Lee:

*** brava bluestockings!! amazing women. ***
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:49pm Dropof Goldensun:

LL- Yeah, that's what we're doing. Been there almost a week already. She went completely on her own but she's made friends from the school so she's been doing touristy stuff with them.
Avatar 12:50pm Linda Lee:

great. she's not alone & they'll all watch out for each other.
Avatar 12:51pm Linda Lee:

this is the time for her to travel & explore! be thankful she's not waiting til she's set in her ways..
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:59pm fred:

Is that book available in English?
  12:59pm JakeGould:

Hey Mayuko!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:00pm fred:

Speaking of new shows, this week will see the return of Jason Elbogen!
  1:01pm JakeGould:

Of course they went up on a snow covered mountain.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:03pm Otis Fodder:

@fred - Oh yes, Jason just had a great show yesterday, www.wfmu.org...
Avatar 1:04pm Sem:

Hello and good afternoon, Mayuko, and Play Vertigo folk.
Avatar 1:06pm Linda Lee:

amazing piece. wow.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:06pm fred:

@Otis Fodder: Damn, I missed it! I thought it was next week. But I had a grueling week at work so I'd have missed it anyway
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:06pm Otis Fodder:

Thanks Mayuko, just added this compilation of my list of releases to pick up, Seitō: In the Beginning, Woman Was the Sun - akuphone.bandcamp.com...
Avatar 1:07pm Mayuko:

Don't worry Dropof! I'm sure your daughter wouldn't make you as worried as Raicho did her parents with this mountain trip!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:07pm Otis Fodder:

@fred - we have the archives. i live there so much. :)
Avatar 1:07pm Mayuko:

Hi Ken, coelacanth∅! Thanks for tuning in!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:08pm Ken From Hyde Park:

Meghan's Underwater Theme Park returns next Friday 7-9 AM Eastern US time. All kinds of shows cropping up!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:10pm fred:

@Otis Fodder: I know, but I wanted to greet his return on the playlist!
Avatar 1:10pm Mayuko:

Doug!!! Hallos!
& Yay Otis! Thanks for tuning in live!!!!!!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:10pm Dropof Goldensun:

@Mayuko - Nice!!
Avatar 1:11pm Mayuko:

@fred I think this gotta be the English translation, though I read it in Japanese. cup.columbia.edu...
Avatar 1:13pm Mayuko:

@Jake Yeah cos why not?!?! & Hi!
Avatar 1:13pm Mayuko:

Hola, my radio family Sem!!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:14pm coelacanth∅:

Meghan and Jason back on a regular schedule?
- good news!
-and maybe Jason Sigal some time? i heard he did a fill-in, after a few years, last week. (which i missed)
  1:15pm JakeGould:

Better than sitting in a garage with the exhaust going into your car.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:15pm coelacanth∅:

oh wait...7-9am? that sucks!
Avatar 1:16pm Linda Lee:

love these pieces! is there info on when they were recorded?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:16pm fred:

@Mayuko: thanks for the reference! I already planned to go to my fave bookshop this week to order the new Colson Whitehead, I'll ask about that one too. (it would be more expensive, but I think of it as a way to support an actual bookshop)
Avatar 1:17pm Mayuko:

@Otis @1:06 Nice! The label used the same artwork from the original Seito magazine cover - think that would look great on LP. The flower illustration on today's playlist was made by one of the artists who did the magazine covers.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:18pm chresti:

A lot of the new shows either conflict with sleep time, work, or other, favorite show times, for me
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:19pm Otis Fodder:

@Mayuko - Touring the back catalogue of Akuphone, I see so many interesting releases.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:20pm Otis Fodder:

@chresti - me too, me too.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:21pm fred:

I'm still bummed I missed Kakushin Nishihara a couple years ago
Avatar 1:21pm Mayuko:

@fred I think how I presented that book sounded super serious but there were many really funny things in it too. People were so dramatic and extremely serious in the early 20th century!!!
& yes I think it's always great to support a physical bookstore when you can!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:22pm Dropof Goldensun:

Mayuko, your show is amazing today!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:22pm coelacanth∅:

yeah 7-9am is too late for many westcoasters and too early for me
Avatar 1:23pm Mayuko:

@Dropof Thanks! I should have said this was going to be ALL GENIUS SHOW instead of all Japanese female show in the GTDR newsletter.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:23pm david w:

I'm marinating in all this. Had other things to do but now transfixed! Thanks, Mayuko!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:23pm coelacanth∅:

(i'll catch the tail of the show occasionally though)
  1:24pm alias pail:

crazy sounds mayuko!
Avatar 1:25pm Linda Lee:

just beautiful!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:26pm Dropof Goldensun:

@Mayuko - I just wish I wasn't listening from work! I'm sure it will be even better when I give it a re-listen.
Avatar 1:26pm Mayuko:

Hi david w! Thank you for your ears!!!!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:28pm chresti:

love this
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:28pm melinda:

This music is helping to counteract the bluggy weather in my area. 84 degrees in my house with 69% humidity.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:29pm coelacanth∅:

everything since i arrived has been Brilliant!
sad that 99% of people (my guess is in most of the world) think of yoko ono first, if not only, when presented with the idea of female japanese "experimental" artists.
Avatar 1:31pm Mayuko:

@alias pail haha! Crazy but not cutesy, unlike many kawaii stuff from that country, as you know!!! (& thanks for listening!!!)
Avatar 1:31pm Linda Lee:

wow.. secret aria. so, so pretty.
Avatar 1:32pm Linda Lee:

instant attitude adjustment!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:34pm fred:

@coel: I don't think so. I don't think most people think of her as an artist (sadly, and to their loss). I think most would draw a blank, with Yayoi Kusama maybe registering, and possibly Ikue Mori on the music side
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:35pm fred:

Also, yeah, I clicked starred the whole show
Avatar 1:36pm Mayuko:

@fred @coel I have a feeling though like coel said people who know Ikue Mori probably belong to that 1%..........!!!!!!!!! Sad face!!!!
Avatar 1:37pm Mayuko:

But yeah, no Yoko, no Phew, no Yoshimi, no Ikue Mori today, with all due respect.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:37pm chresti:

Yoko Ono is the name on the marquee for Female Japanese experimental music/art
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:38pm coelacanth∅:

fred i think most people don't consider "experimental" music, or "noise" to be made by artists in general.
Avatar 1:38pm Linda Lee:

ask most about a female sound artist generally .. blank!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:39pm fred:

@Mayuko: So we're part of the 1%! And with Phew we're even into the 0.01% at best
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:39pm chresti:

Most people know who she is, in other words
Avatar 1:39pm Linda Lee:

that's called oppression. that's how it works.
  1:39pm Martinibomb:

Good morning Mayuko and everyone. Listening
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:40pm Otis Fodder:

Hi Martini!
Avatar 1:40pm Linda Lee:

hey there MB!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:42pm fred:

Then again, when it comes to Phew, most people don't know about male artists either in that genre (if that word even applies)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:43pm coelacanth∅:

i know few japanese female artists by name, to be honest, but the first one comes to mind is usually Yoshimi. (but i don't call any of it "experimental". they're not experimenting, in general; they know basically what they're going for. the only experiment is to see how many people care about it.)
Avatar 1:43pm Mayuko:

@chresti All this Yoko ono worship in the west drives me crazy sometimes! When we have THIS many great Japanese women who can represent us too!!!!!!!!!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:43pm fred:

Maybe my favorite live band
Avatar 1:44pm Linda Lee:

'course we know that without her association with John most of the west wouldn't know Yoko either.
Avatar 1:44pm Mayuko:

Oh yay, Martinibomb! Thank you for tuning in!! I didn't know you are in Good Morning zone.
Avatar 1:45pm Mayuko:

@fred @1:42 dat is actually true. sadder face!!!
Avatar 1:46pm Mayuko:

oh wait then again Phew's producer from the 80's Sakamoto did become super famous! if that counts!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:49pm fred:

The first time I saw Nisennenmondai was on the Destination Tokyo tour. They got there late because of snow delays, and the opening noise band (Lubriphikatttor) had to play for close to 40 minutes when they usually stop at 15 or so, until they made it to the venue. They didn't have time for a sound check, yet they blew my mind
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:50pm coelacanth∅:

Mayuko (@1.43) tell me about it! if i was to mention to people when i go into town later that i listened to a really great program of adventurous female japanese musicians, or "experimental" artists, someone's gonna say oh like yoko ono?!
Avatar 1:50pm Mayuko:

Coming up next is Music For a Free World
with Dave Sewelson!!!!!
Avatar 1:51pm Mayuko:

& don't forget to tune in for the brand new show on the Drummer stream sneak preview later today!

Five Miles To Midnight with The Knave, 7 - 9pm (EDT) !!!!!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:51pm chresti:

Yes, not always experimental@coel
I like Buffalo Daughter, for instance, don't remember their names, though
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:52pm coelacanth∅:

(it's like when i tell people the jazz i like, for the most part, is "free" jazz, they almost always say so you like Albert Ayler?

...and i do not.)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:52pm chresti:

Thanks Mayuko!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:54pm chresti:

Love this Nisennenmondai
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:55pm Ken From Hyde Park:

Thanks, Mayuko. for such a fantastic collection of artists today!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:55pm fred:

Thanks for the Nisennenmondai!!!
I tried to subscribe to their mailing list but it never worked. So I haven't seen them in years. Sad face indeed
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:57pm spodiodi:

thanks, Mayuko! words of wisdom
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:57pm Dropof Goldensun:

Thank you, thank you, thank you! Bye everyone and have a great week!
Avatar 1:58pm Sem:

Thank you, Mayuko. Love this show.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:59pm Otis Fodder:

Beautiful musical voyage today (with knowledge) and a new love with the Seitō compilation. Merci Mayuko!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:59pm coelacanth∅:

Thanks Mayuko! Excellent as always!
take care everyone
Avatar 1:59pm Linda Lee:

thanks so much Mayuko! brilliant show!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:00pm fred:

Thanks so much, this was a wonderful show
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:01pm maestroso:

Just catching the end... there's a live version of this on youtube with Anthony Jackson on bass. It's pretty astounding. Akiko is a fine pianist.
Avatar 2:04pm Mayuko:

Thanks again everyone for listening, much appreciated! See you all next week!!!
