Charles Mingus said jazz was a word invented to separate musicians from their money. Music for a Free World brings us together, drawing listeners to the healing power of smooth free jazz. Each week, surprise guests bring their own sides to spin and their instruments of choice to spontaneously jam.

Hi Dave and free folks! Listening while biking Watchung Reservation in beautiful New Jersey (on a hydration break). Nice opening!

Avatar 2:13pm fred:

Joe McPhee is playing at my favorite venue on Thursday! And I'll miss it. Conflict with a dance show, and dance comes first (I have to book months in advance for dance because tickets are so hard to get)

Avatar 2:42pm coelacanth∅:

my introduction to Kali Fasteau is that a friend gave me a tape in the 1990s. it's embarrassing because this friend was David Ware's wife, and gave me the tape soon after it was obvious i was not grasping David's music. i didn't know it at the time, i just thought she was sharing music. probably true, but she also probably considered it a good stepping stone.
strangely i soon got very into David's music, before i really listened to Kali Fasteau.
Avatar 2:45pm Jeff Moore:

@coelacanth∅: that is a cool vignette.
Avatar 2:46pm northguineahills:

@Dave: No need, I used jalapenos and ghost peppers from my garden.... (still sweating and blowing my nose).
Avatar 2:49pm northguineahills:

Cool, coel:

Heck, I was stuck in the indie ghetto until 1994 I saw a Sam Rivers followed by Mathew Shipp w/ William Parker. Parker blew my mind and I never looked back. It really changed 'music' for me. (I was just 18). (although I liked classic bebop in HS).
Avatar 2:52pm coelacanth∅:

well you jumped on the freedom train much younger than i did then (at least as jazz goes anyway)
Avatar 2:54pm spodiodi:

the indie ghetto :)
Avatar 2:57pm spodiodi:

i guess i'm a nomadic listener/genre-fan. speant some time there as well (and still enjoy visiting)
Avatar 2:58pm coelacanth∅:

haha i guess you never met Mingus then!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:01pm Doug Schulkind:

My daughter also plays viola. Also got her start choosing the instrument in her NYC public school music class. But she chose viola intentionally having been inspired by her teacher who was a violist. She's currently trying out new bows, each of which costs more than several cars I've owned.

I'm picturing booths with plush red vinyl upholstery enclosing little cocktail tables.

But maybe I 'm just thinking about the organ-player bar my folks sometimes stopped in.
Avatar 3:09pm James Douglas:

dude you are so off mike, can't hear you.

Thanks for the tip James....
Avatar 3:15pm northguineahills:

@spodiodi: Well, everything since I discovered WFMU in 1998 has spoken to me (yes, I got the stream online back then).
Avatar 3:16pm northguineahills:

Although, back in those days, I could only listen if I was the last one at work, as my dial-up wasn't fast enough. So, once playlists came up, I'd just read them....
Avatar 3:17pm spodiodi:

similar story here, ngh. '98 or '99 for me as well (should pinpont it sometime)
Avatar 3:19pm fred:

Viola is one of my favorite instruments
Avatar 3:20pm spodiodi:

thanks for the interview and music, Dave & Melanie
Avatar 3:23pm spodiodi:

it's strange to me that all of the people to whom i've recommended WFMU never really got hooked, nor even tried (probably, i think) in most cases. there is no better
Avatar 3:24pm spodiodi:

Avatar 3:25pm spodiodi:

(and i suppose i should have said none of the people"
