I play music that is old and that is new. Some of it is digital while some is analog. It is from many different countries; sometimes it is loud and at other times it is quiet.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:00pm fred:

Good afternoon Mayuko and listenerds
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:02pm listener james from westwood:

Happy Saturday, Mayuko and all! ::waves from mass of proofreading::
Avatar 12:05pm Mayuko:

Hola, my radio family fred! How are you today?
Happy Sat to you too, james! That's a very particular kind of beach you're spending your weekend at!
Avatar 12:07pm JosephB:

Happy Saturday Mayuko, Fred, and James!
I had the pleasure of seeing Chirgilchin with Yuliyana Krivoshapkina a few weeks back. Incredible show.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:08pm fred:

I saw Matmos this week in a small venue, a good show. And I got to talk briefly with M.C. Schmidt when he noticed my WFMU T-shirt before the show
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:09pm chresti:

Hi Mayuko and Vertigoers!
  12:10pm rw:

Good morning! I've seen nothing. How's everyone doing?
Avatar 12:11pm JosephB:

@fred Nice! A wfmu shirt is like a secret handshake.
Hey Chresti and rw!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:12pm Franco Twinkie:

Good morning, Mayuko. I'm outside painting a sign and this is blasting out the front door. Just came in for more coffee.
Avatar 12:13pm Mayuko:

@JosephB oh wow that is SO COOL!!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:13pm coelacanth∅:

Good Afternoon Mayuko, and all
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:16pm fred:

I received my second batch of tickets for next year (mostly dance shows). No Byambajargal this year, but I'll get to hear Ulzhan Baibussynova again (she's from Kazakhstan)
Avatar 12:17pm Mayuko:

@fred @ Joe B
2 people talked to me on the street yesterday because I was wearing Gary Panter's crazy cat T. One of them was even wearing one herself - Marcel M's shirt. That was funny.
Avatar 12:18pm JosephB:

@Mayuko Yuliyana Krivoshapkina in particular did some truly spellbinding, unbelievable stuff with a jaw harp. Vocal emulations of birds, wolves, and horses were all woven into the music.
Avatar 12:18pm Mayuko:

Good morning Chresti! Me neither, rw!!
That's so great, Franco! Glad to be your company sonically.
  12:19pm Dave B.:

Hello Mayuko and Vertigans... Mayuko it was nice catching up in real life. lets do it again soon!
  12:20pm Ike:

  12:21pm rw:

Mayuko, two people in one day? Crazy! I get comments occasionally but rarely from anyone who knows the station. The bast was when a woman asked me what WFMU meant and then said, "Oh, I was thinking it meant World Full of Mutant Underlings".
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:21pm fred:

This is probably a record for how early I clicky-star a whole show
  12:22pm Ike:

The other day a lady and I nodded hello to each other here in Sunset Park because she was wearing the fast food FMU shirt and I was wearing the red howling Faye dog shirt and neo-Devo baseball cap.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:23pm fred:

@rw: You should submit that interpretation to SSD. Ken and/or Andy might like it
  12:23pm JakeGould:

Hey Mayuko!
  12:25pm rw:

Fred, yes. Very Ken and/or Andy.

Joe, I'm more than a little jealous.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:27pm fred:

Almost every time someone has commented on a WFMU T-shirt I was wearing, it was at a show and they were playing
Avatar 12:28pm Mayuko:

@JosephB I dunno why rw and I don't go see things when there are brilliant things like that are happening out there in the world. Except he does seem to go to museums so he's doing much better than me.

Hi coelacanth∅!!!
Avatar 12:30pm Mayuko:

Hey Dave B! Likewise and wish we were able to talk a bit longer!
Avatar 12:30pm Mayuko:

@rw That woman is being way too creative and also might not be too wrong.
  12:31pm JakeGould:

I think I am losing my mind: The R, N, F and G trains are all working well today.
  12:32pm JakeGould:

@rw: I think that WFMU means “Wide Fit Men’s Underwear.”
Avatar 12:32pm Mayuko:

@Ike I walked out of my house in Talk's cheap shirt designed by Faye and immediately ran into someone in Faye's station shirt the other day! Her T-shirts taking over south Brooklyn!!!
Avatar 12:33pm Mayuko:

Hallos, Jake!!!
  12:33pm rw:

Mayuko, I got the impression that's just what popped into her head. The entire encounter lasted about five seconds.

Jake, that too!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:34pm coelacanth∅:

most of the time when i'm wearing one of the woof moo tshirts they've never heard of the station and just think it's a cute depiction of a dog and a cow meeting
Avatar 12:35pm JosephB:

@Mayuko It's especially hard to go see all that stuff if you are also trying to make art or music. Everything takes time and sometimes there are always way too many things to see or do -- at least in places like NYC or LA.
  12:37pm JakeGould:

@JosephB: Well the problem nowadays is while NYC has lots of stuff happening, it’s now all spread out all over the place. When Village was a creative center you could just land your ass there and then walk to tons of things. Not like that anymore… One thing in Red Hook… Another thing in Bushwick… Another in Chelsea… Another in another.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:38pm David D:

Good afternoon, Mayuko and all!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:38pm Polyus:

Was that a mechanical noise or a drumbeat recorded in some really distorted way? Really really cool sound.
  12:38pm mzzzmz:

the banner turk buddhist fresco compels me something. I am traveling sofia to instanbul this summer. kazakh next!
Avatar 12:41pm Mayuko:

Good afternoon, Comrade David D!!!
  12:41pm rw:

Jake, I haven't spent a ton of time in NYC but Los Angeles has got to be worse. I'm not exactly sure where Joe lives in LA but he's definitely in a much cooler part of town than I am.

Mayuko, you're killing it this morning with the music selection.
Avatar 12:42pm Mayuko:

Hi Polyus! He writes something about "a percussive water pump housed in a shed" so that must be it?

Avatar 12:44pm Mayuko:

@mzzzmz aw nice! man you're traveling all over the world all the time!!! speaking of going to many things...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:44pm Rich in Washington:

Hi Mayuko!
Listening throughout the house while the Missus and I work on a flooring project!
Wonderful show today!
  12:46pm JakeGould:

@rw: Oh, L.A. is tons worse… You have to drive to do anything in that place!
  12:46pm Denniston Harvey:

Exquisite show, as always, Mayuko.
  12:48pm mzzzmz:

Thessaloniki greece before Sofia. Traveling cheap is doable there, fun that way.
  12:54pm JakeGould:

I’m first American born and in elementary school—simply based on my weird accent as a kid—they shoved me into a “speech” class because they considered me having an accent to be a learning issue.

Me, a deaf girl, a Hispanic kid with a palsy and the only black kid in my class all had “problems” because we didn’t have correct accents. Needless to say, I go in trouble because I would get angry at how they treated me—and my classmates with accents—as stupid at the time.
Avatar 1:03pm Mayuko:

@rw thanks! I can kill it when there's a good inspiration during the week!!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:04pm coelacanth∅:

i like that bit of midare at the beginning!
Avatar 1:05pm Sem:

Hello and good afternoon from sunny Nova Scotia, Mayuko, and Vertigo-goers.
  1:05pm Dave B.:

Its as if they project their own ignorance upon those they perceive as being ignorant. I was always the “curious” or “inquisitive” one from an early age. It has afforded me a rather rich life when I reflect on it...
Avatar 1:05pm Mayuko:

Hi Rich, happy to have you listening! Good luck with the flooring!!!
  1:06pm rw:

Jake that blows. Hopefully they figured it out pretty quickly. Not exactly the same thing but I was put in the "slow" group as a kid for being shy.
Avatar 1:06pm Mayuko:

Thank you so much for the kind words, Denniston Harvey!!!
  1:06pm Jesse k:

Hi Mayuko!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:09pm Franco Twinkie:

Jake, I was treated as a real problem because I wouldn't do what I was told to do. This caused me major grief at school till I was in high school, then became a real refusenik.
  1:10pm rw:

Mayuko, those monsters seem to be good for you!
Avatar 1:12pm JosephB:

@rw @JakeGould In elementary school think I was in just about every "special" class you could put a kid in -- speech therapy, physical therapy, and a general class for learning differences with about five other kids for half the day. It's a weird thing to grow up with people telling you that you need help all the time!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:16pm coelacanth∅:

i also was put in a "special" room. i went to most of the main classes but had to spent an hour/day (?) learning how to read, with 2-3 down syndrome kids and 1-2 others. the teacher, Ms.Piel, was brilliant and after a few questions gave me some literature on musical artists i liked, and determined that i can read just fine.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:17pm Franco Twinkie:

RW. I was taken into a ball closet and tested by a psychologist. It was determined I needed to be put in special school. Thank goodness my mother told them to go fuck themselves.
  1:17pm rw:

When my daughter had some social issues in grade school I started doing a sort of survey; asking people about their childhood experiences. Seemed to me that the coolest, most interesting and well adjusted adults had been outcasts as kids.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:18pm coelacanth∅:

Joseph you must be a space alien.
Avatar 1:19pm JosephB:

@coel mutant underling, actually
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:19pm coelacanth∅:

rw i think you're onto something
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:20pm Franco Twinkie:

Coel, Jake, RW. My brothers, Ha!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:20pm Ken From Hyde Park:

Bang a vertigong!
Avatar 1:21pm Mayuko:

@Jake That's really ridiculous. Of course you or any kid would get angry and it sure makes me upset. Some American people are not even aware the fact that they were born in the most powerful country in the world and that they speak English with no accent give them tremendous advantage already, compared to the rest of the world in this era of global economy. Which is where the lack of imagination comes from, even amongst kids.
Avatar 1:21pm Mayuko:

My radio family Sem! Welcome!!!
  1:22pm rw:

Oh, and Joe, I missed the live Vertigo a couple weeks back but caught the archives. Nice B-Day song!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:23pm chresti:

Some special ed programs can be havens for young creative people
  1:24pm Rickwaukee:

Wozencroft very bird-like DUCKS!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:25pm nostrangerer:

Checking in, listening while having late lunch. Is this the good for digestion music hour? ;)
Avatar 1:25pm Mayuko:

I'm trying to catch up with the comments now but one thing becoming clear to me right now is that the play vertigo listenerds tend to be SPECIAL!!!
  1:26pm Ike:

The “gradations” Mayuko spoke of are so interesting. I just mentioned to someone a few hours ago how most Uzbek restaurants have kimchi as a side dish. Not to mention so-called “Korean carrot salad” — not sure how Korean that really is, but it’s tasty. (Of course everything always ends up being about food with me.)
Avatar 1:27pm JosephB:

@rw thanks! @chresti In high school my "differences" did afford me a bunch of study halls, and towards the end I spent most of that time painting in the art classroom.
Avatar 1:28pm Mayuko:

Jesse!!! Hope you're enjoying the vacation (though you probably have to be working hard.......)!!!!!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:29pm coelacanth∅:

i was also in speech therapy in elementary school.
-for my r.
mrs.shapiro prescribed to "roar like a lion" whenever i came to an r sound in speech. great suggestion. the other kids will never make fun of me for that.
(i never once did it, and still somehow can speak alright)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:29pm Franco Twinkie:

Maybe special ed. would have helped me with my problems in school, but it would have been a death sentence on the street in my neighborhood.
  1:32pm Jeff g.:

Mayuuuuuuuuko! Hi.

Birds of a feather....
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:32pm coelacanth∅:

when i went to that reading class (in 10th grade) they camouflaged it with some fancy name
  1:32pm Rickwaukee:

Because I said so
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:32pm chresti:

JoesephB-the art room was the only place I would show up (and do anything) at high school/continuation school
Avatar 1:33pm Mayuko:

@Dave B I think that's what it is. It was frustrating especially when a kid who said "she doesn't understand" was not understanding/following the instructions!!!!!!!!
  1:34pm Jesse k:

I'm reconnecting with my slacker roots this summer ;). That last track with the frogs? was sublime!!
  1:34pm Rickwaukee:

*did that not sound like a 3 year old asking WHY about everything?
Avatar 1:36pm Mayuko:

Hi Ken, Rickwaukee!

Now I am not sure about digestion with this track, nostrangerer, but glad to have you here! haha.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:37pm nostrangerer:

This sounds like my digestion. Sorta.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:38pm Paul from Toronto:

Happy Saturday, Mayuko. Hi, all.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:39pm chresti:

Ah yes, the never ending "why"@Rickwaukee
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:39pm Doug Schulkind:

Hi Mayuko! Beautiful show.
  1:40pm JakeGould:

Anyway, gotta go outside because it seems that starting tomorrow it will just be rainy all week! Need to get some sun. Thanks Mayuko!
Avatar 1:41pm Mayuko:

It seems to me many kids need Shut the F Up Therapy. OF COURSE it's hard for any shy or even normal kid/person to say anything when you're surrounded by buncha people acting like real crazy and just don't stop talking. It's really not fair some have to try hard to speak "better" when the majority has no clue how to LISTEN.
  1:42pm rw:

I'm falling behind on work here so I'll say thank you once again Mayuko for the always special Vertigo and get back to it!

Later everyone! Have a great Saturday!!
Avatar 1:43pm Mayuko:

Hellos, Jeff G!!

Yay, another listener from Canada checking in!!! Welcome, Paul!
Avatar 1:44pm Mayuko:

Thanks & hallos, Doug!!!!!!!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:45pm chresti:

Kids (and some adults I know) need a Listening class
Avatar 1:45pm JosephB:

Thanks, Mayuko. Really dug the Li Daiguo track.
Avatar 1:46pm Mayuko:

  1:46pm Dave B.:

You just gotta turn the tables on kids like that
Avatar 1:47pm Mayuko:

Have a great rest of the weekend to you too, Jake & rw and everyone going outside now!!!!!
  1:47pm Rickwaukee:

Wing Wing - Hehwoh
Avatar 1:50pm JosephB:

@Mayuko hahaha @Chresti very true!
I remember how mean kids in my elementary school could be towards English language learners, particularly towards the many Russian kids at my school, and sadly I'm sure I ostracized them too... but I also have some good memories of playing with them. Kids can be real doofuses.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:52pm chresti:

@Mayuko- people that talk all at once and don't stop, describes family gatherings
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:52pm Franco Twinkie:

Coel. reading was a real problem for me as well. In the mid-sixties there were constantly articles in the major magazines of the day about UFO's and other unexplainable phenomena. It drove me nuts that I couldn't read the articles. The girl across the street lent me a pile of Archie comics in the summer between the forth and fifth grade. I was determined to learn to read. It worked! The following year when they tested us for aptitude, I was placed in the advanced reading group. I was afraid that they had made a mistake. I was so use to been treated like an idiot. But when they passed out the books, I could read them! However, my problems with school were far from over.
  1:54pm Jeff g.:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:54pm chresti:

Love this show, thanks Mayuko!
  1:55pm Dave B.:

If it is any consolation, whatever you or I have been thru, those before us have as well, as will those that follow us. It is life. It is a cycle.

  1:59pm Rickwaukee:

Cracking good show, Mayuko!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:59pm coelacanth∅:

Franco that's interesting; and i can relate to that last part!
...for me i think it was something about how i carried myself. people said things that i just wanted to ponder so my response was "wow". didn't help my "i'm not a total idiot case"
  1:59pm Dave B.:

The birds were nice. I am sitting on my roof and I think it confused some of my avian neighbors. Theres a young falcon swooping around hunting now....
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:00pm coelacanth∅:

Thanks Mayuko! Brilliant as always!

Yeah! PEN15 (thank you for posting that Jeff G & Joe B, I couldn't remember off the top of my head) and it sure sounded super interesting!! I should find a way to check that out.
