Hello, all!

My wife saw today's playlist pic and said: "So, you're doing an all-Japanese-music special?" Ummm, no. Today's theme is safety. Or matches.
Avatar 11:49am Nick S.:

YEAH! Safety In Numbers
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:50am chresti:

Hi Tony, safe rhinoceros and psychedelic fork! I'm playing it safe by checking in early.
No work today, woo hoo!
Avatar 11:52am Tony Coulter:

Heya, Nick and chresti! A safety match made in heaven.
Avatar 11:56am Franco Twinkie:

Avatar 11:57am Tony Coulter:

Franco Tee! Heya!
Avatar 11:58am Franco Twinkie:

I loved matches when I was a boy. Especially wooden matches in a box.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:00pm listener james from westwood:

Good Tuesday, Tony and all!
Avatar 12:01pm Tony Coulter:

Hiya, James!
Avatar 12:01pm Sem:

Glad it's someone else's turn to be in the barrel.
Hello, Tony and Coulterists.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:02pm Granny Spicy Tuna (they/them):

hail, WFMU kin!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:02pm Rich in Washington:

Oh wow.
Avatar 12:02pm Tony Coulter:

Sem & Granny T! Yay!
Avatar 12:03pm Tony Coulter:

Hey, Rich!
Avatar 12:04pm Tony Coulter:

In case you're wondering: the track on now ("High Pressure Days") is a cover of a Units song.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:04pm Rich in Washington:

i swear I remember some group doing an acapella version of High Pressure Days sometime in the early 80s. I remember hearing it on the radio. The usual suspects for acapella New Wave covers, The Bobs, didn't do it though. Maybe I hallucinated it?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:05pm Rich in Washington:

Jandek should cover a Units song.
Avatar 12:05pm Tony Coulter:

Haven't heard that!
Avatar 12:06pm Franco Twinkie:

Granny, how do you deal with the heat?
Avatar 12:07pm Tony Coulter:

@ Rich: Haven't heard the a cappella version, I mean....
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:07pm chresti:

We're having high pressure days in California, lately, with 100+ degree heat
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:08pm Granny Spicy Tuna (they/them):

Franco Twinkie: i've been hiding inside. But no one in SF has air conditioning, so we're all sweaty and deflated. Ugh
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:08pm Rich in Washington:

I am becoming convinced that it was a false memory implanted by my CIA handlers to throw me off my Shecky Greene / JFK assassination angle.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:09pm Rich in Washington:

We're slated to have some heat up my way. People are grumbling, starting to panic.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:11pm Rich in Washington:

Overheard in a New Seasons:
Clerk: "It's supposed to get HOT this week! I don't even have AC in my car!".
Boojie customer, somewhat sympathetic: "I knew someone in college that didn't have AC".
Avatar 12:12pm Franco Twinkie:

That is why I asked. I always find it unsettling when I'm there and it's hot.
Avatar 12:14pm Tony Coulter:

Sweat beats air conditioners any day as a cooling agent.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:15pm Granny Spicy Tuna (they/them):

it is better than freezing in cranked up AC
Avatar 12:16pm Franco Twinkie:

Tony, that is a very bold concept.
Avatar 12:16pm HollyRT:

Hello all, it's me with a slightly altered username because i got a new computer and have to reenter all my passwords and can't remember mine and no longer have access to the email account I originally used for WFMU so can't get a reset link, so I registered again. Whew!
Avatar 12:19pm Tony Coulter:

Holly! You're always a Holly to me (to sort of quote Billy Joel).
Avatar 12:26pm Tony Coulter:

Cortex samples have been used in a lot of hip hop tracks. Sadly, that has pushed the price of their first LP into the stratosphere. Plus, there are probably a bunch of copies out there with serious groove wear in a few spots.
Avatar 12:28pm Nick S.:

I love Andy Kim.
Avatar 12:36pm Nick S.:

Earle Mankey and James Jamerson play on this Wilson record. Damn!
Avatar 12:37pm Tony Coulter:

That's quite a combo!
Avatar 12:40pm Nick S.:

There were two other bass players and three other guitarists but those guys.
Avatar 12:41pm Franco Twinkie:

Years ago a friend was walking down Pacific Ave. in Venice and a record came flying out of the window of a passing car. He picked it up, and it was Pacific Ocean Blue. The car was stopped at a signal, and my friend looked in. It was Dennis Wilson! He said " Hey, you're Dennis, I love your stuff." Dennis sheepishly said "Thanks man," and the car drove away.
Avatar 12:41pm Tony Coulter:

Avatar 12:47pm Nick S.:

The car was being driven by one Charlie Manson!
Avatar 12:50pm Franco Twinkie:

Good one, Nik!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:52pm Yvang:

How Everyone!... from rainy west coast of Europe...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:53pm Webhamster Henry:

Hi Tony: This Dies Natalis is really nice!
Avatar 12:54pm Tony Coulter:

How, Yvang!! (Did any Native Americans outside of Westerns really ever say "how"?)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:55pm Yvang:

Certainly not! My mistake!
Avatar 12:56pm Tony Coulter:

Hiya, Webhamster! Hard to believe, but I seem to be the first person on FMU to play Howard Hanson (autofill didn't kick in).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:56pm Webhamster Henry:

Wow! I also like that Continental Subway has been filling its fourth hour with contemporary classical music.
Avatar 1:02pm Tony Coulter:

At some point in the not too distant future I'll be doing a show with nothing but music from the '30s -- almost all of it classical.
Avatar 1:04pm Tony Coulter:

Just for a change of pace....
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:05pm Yvang:

Will you play 78' records for this show?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:06pm Yvang:

I mean... that show...
Avatar 1:08pm Tony Coulter:

Sadly, no! None of my turntables play 78s (besides which, I only have a handful anyway). I'll leave the 78s to Mac.
Avatar 1:09pm Tony Coulter:

Mostly, it'll be later recordings of music from the '30s -- not recordings from the '30s.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:21pm chresti:

When we talk it's illegal speed?
Avatar 1:22pm Tony Coulter:

Yep, you're right: this Zappa track was later re-recorded with new lyrics as "Take Your Clothes Off When You Dance"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:22pm Rich in Washington:

Weird to hear this with dif vocals.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:23pm Webhamster Henry:

I thought it was familiar! Young Frank!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:23pm Rich in Washington:

Did he do this for the Mothers or was this a demo to be done by someone else?
Avatar 1:24pm Tony Coulter:

It's an early Mothers recording.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:24pm Kudubundu:

Any Zappa is good for me! Hi everyone. Great show Tony.
Avatar 1:25pm Tony Coulter:

Thanks .... and greetings -- Kudubundu!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:25pm Rich in Washington:

Oh wow. Reading about it. That distinctive, non-Frank sounding fretwork was by Henry Vestine of Canned Heat.
Avatar 1:33pm coelacanth∅:

greetings Tony & all
Avatar 1:34pm Tony Coulter:

Greets, coelacanth∅!
  1:36pm Mudshark:

"This it/a big hit single/with a bullet"
Avatar 1:36pm coelacanth∅:

so those are the safety matches. 'not how i'd pictured them.
...i've never settled for the safety matches; always took my chances with the adventurous matches.
Avatar 1:38pm Tony Coulter:

Nothing's safer than rowing in a barrel -- particularly if you're a bird without hands.
Avatar 1:38pm Tony Coulter:

Ahoy, mudshark!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:45pm JtotheK:

hiya tony, hello everyone.
Avatar 1:46pm Tony Coulter:

Heya, hiya, hello, JtotheK!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:52pm Uncle Michael:

Been digging the last hour. Before that, I wasn't here.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:52pm Webhamster Henry:

Speak 'n' Spell gets lots of airplay on this show.
Avatar 1:53pm Tony Coulter:

Uncle Michael! Nice to see you here!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:54pm Rich in Washington:

I keep finding Speak N' Spells and Speak N' Maths. I am the crazy cat lady of late 70s edutainment toys.
Avatar 1:55pm Nick S.:

I think that Sandy song is a Wilson production.
Avatar 1:57pm Nick S.:

Whoops! It was not.
Avatar 2:01pm Tony Coulter:

It does sound like it could have been, though....
Avatar 2:05pm Nick S.:

I looked it up. It was recorded in Nashville. I looked at Wilson's production credits and they weren't listed. Great song I've heard somewhere.
Avatar 2:06pm Nick S.:

The Adverts are fantastic!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:08pm Uncle Michael:

Rich, this See 'n' Say commercial was shot two doors down from us and we watched.

The staircase has been replaced since 1972.
Avatar 2:09pm Franco Twinkie:

At first I thought I was listening to an alternate universe version of Today by The Jefferson Airplane.
Avatar 2:11pm Tony Coulter:

The Moonstone track? Know what you mean!
Avatar 2:12pm Franco Twinkie:

Yup. Real nice.
Avatar 2:15pm Tony Coulter:

The vocalist on this Tom Nehls track later became Miss America! en.wikipedia.org...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:15pm Stanley:

Hola Ton y Coulter
Avatar 2:15pm Tony Coulter:

Heya, Stanlistan!
Avatar 2:23pm coelacanth∅:

was it the adverts that did "gary gilmour's eyes"?
Avatar 2:24pm Tony Coulter:

Avatar 2:26pm coelacanth∅:

that's a great one. i just missed the adverts song here because i had to go outside to release a scary spider i caught, after identification
Avatar 2:28pm coelacanth∅:

big fierce thing and i found a video of someone letting one walk all over his hands and, by the jump i'd bet his face as well. then i read about people training them and keeping them as pets.
Avatar 2:34pm Tony Coulter:

I became rather attached to a particular spider in our house. Sadly, she died when the live insect supply dried up over the winter.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:38pm chresti:

A tarantula?
Avatar 2:39pm Tony Coulter:

Nah, some much less hairy -- and much smaller -- kind of spider.
Avatar 2:46pm Sem:

If there is a soundtrack to the creative construction of a tax report to the government, I believe this episode of TC is the one. Head down, listening closely, and...inspired. See you and all next time, Tony.
Avatar 2:47pm Tony Coulter:

"Music to File Taxes By"? Ha!

Thanks, Sem!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:48pm chresti:

I tend to leave spiders alone, unless they're in the shower or on the bed. I'll kill black widows, though.
Avatar 2:49pm coelacanth∅:

there are usually spiders living conspicuously in the bathroom and sometimes the kitchen. always the same species; not threatening at all to me, even when they get lots of food and get fairly large...they're still mostly leg.
but some spiders concern me enough that i kill them. i don't need the further compromise to my immune system caused by arachnid venom; and i can't identify every one.
it's rarely the big ones that scare me though.
Avatar 2:50pm coelacanth∅:

yeah i don't let them stay near the bed.
and fuck black widows.
Avatar 2:55pm Hams:

oooo, the farm i worked on back home had black widows everywhere. they were serious looking dudes. i'd just let'm do their thing, though, and keep moving.
Avatar 2:55pm coelacanth∅:

i've got to head out again already
Thanks Tony!
  2:56pm Divided Alien:

This could have been on Camembert Electrique.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:56pm listener james from westwood:

Happy for the closing Gong! (I'm making you sound like Chuck Barris!) Thanks, Tony!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:57pm David D:
