Heya, everybody! Happy holiday, if you are holidaying. It's Memorial Day here; will do something vaguely thematic at some point. Starting gently.

Avatar 10:03am Joe McG:

@Brian: You're right, Brian, I got this sinus thing going on that's getting me down. I think I need my head drained.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:04am Brian in UK:

Was watching a programme about Dusty's shows on the BBC. In the early days her hair has so much spray it never moved even when she did that thing with her hands spread and rotated her wrists.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:04am Asheville Jon:

welcome to the club Annie! ha!
Avatar 10:08am Joe McG:

@Brian: I recently read an old MOJO article about how she was so nervous to record in Memphis that she was unable to sing and had to do all the vocals later in NY.
  10:10am Andrea in Jersey City:

What a great show, it’s great to be in this wavelength
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:11am Brian in UK:

Joe, watching that programme reminded me how good she was. You know, like Johnny Cash she could sing a song and it became her own.
Two of her backing singers on the TV were Madeleine Bell and Lesley Duncan, both great artists in their own right.
  10:13am Dave Conehead:

Glistening and really enjoying while fishing the outgoing tide. Seaford Long Island...
Avatar 10:13am Joe McG:

Thanks so much, Andrea, glad you're with me today. @Brian: Agree totally!
Avatar 10:14am Joe McG:

@Dave: So cool! Hope you catch a tasty one, if you're catching to eat. If you're catching to put back, I hope it's a big one that you can take a picture of before you release it.
  10:19am SeanG:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:27am Brian in UK:

Joe, a show of misheard lyrics might be fun. John Prine reminded me of 'half an enchilada and you think you're gonna drown" from That's the Way the World Goes Round
  11:28am paul:

Didn't the Smothers Brothers get in trouble for singing this song on their show (as a reference to Vietnam)?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:28am Webhamster Henry:

The Big Muddy was a big problem for the CBS censors on the Smothers Brothers Show.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:30am Brian in UK:

How are the Smothers Brothers perceived then and now?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:30am Granny Spicy Tuna:

Linda Lee: another excellent article, thanks
  11:31am Andrea in Jersey City:

I like Spanish Pipedream by John Prine. It’s one of my favorite songs
Avatar 11:31am Joe McG:

It's interesting because the song was about WWII.

  11:32am kimzilla:

Really enjoying the set Joe.
I’m really exciters to know about the WFMU motorcycle ride, I hope this becomes an annual event. Also, saw a Jesse James movie on Netflix the other night with Johnny Cash. So good and bad at the same time.

@Joe: If it's not too late, consider Dylan's original "John Brown" from disc 2 of Best of Broadside or his live version from Unplugged. Great set!

Smothers Bros on CBS was a great show. Leigh French, Officer Judy, Pat Paulsen, John Hartford and George Harrison! (once)

@Linda Lee, very interesting, but stupid!
  11:44am frenchee:

Wow, this might be my favorite Story Corner ever!
  11:45am frenchee:

also, the Pere Ubu song is lots better than the Spencer Tracy movie of the same name. Which is probably on TCM right now.

We never had the Gong Show either. Guess you had to be there.
Can remember the first time Monty Python came on.
  11:47am paul:

Remember Turn On (with Tim Conway)? It was another network's version of Laugh-In. It lasted one episode. In some markets, not even that long.
Avatar 11:48am northguineahills:

@LL: Well, considering the Smothers Bros were cancelled before my parents met, it's a good thing....
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:49am annie:

@CDT ya got me. there's a lovely story to that signature, btw. and as far as culture is concerned, i got much of my "history" lessons from music, starting from when i was old enough to turn on the victrola. hehe

What radio station would respond like Joe has just done. Proud to be a listener of this thing called WFMU.

Are we right remembering that Dylan released this track under the name "Blind Boy Grunt"? Great show, Joe!

Swag For Life Member 11:56am gwtg:

Maybe Joe will play the Ballad of the Green Berets to balance things out.

Horn charts by Allan Toussaint?
  11:58am Ashok:

This is the best tribute I've heard to soldiers and the madness they are flung into. Great selections, with one notable exception: that "billy, don't be a hero" is dreadful. I haven't heard that since I was a child, like in more than 40 years. I thought it was a stinker then, too. Maybe that makes it worthwhile, I dunno.
  11:59am Andrea in Jersey City:

Joe you broke the radio
Avatar 11:59am northguineahills:
