Hey Danny!
Avatar 10:15pm coelacanth∅:

weird, and good version

Avatar 10:16pm Little Danny:

Haha, Erica, thanks for remembering Lost Frequencies! Taking the evening off after a long day
Avatar 10:16pm Little Danny:

Now I am, Franco!
Avatar 10:16pm Little Danny:

Heya good doctor!
Avatar 10:17pm Erica:

Well it's nice to have you here Danny.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:17pm doctorjazz:

And more Traffic!
Avatar 10:17pm Franco Twinkie:

Brit psych is soooo, I dunno, like British breakfast cereal - familiar and peculiar at the same time.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:18pm Matt from New Orleans:

I’m surprised that Steve Winwood never got the moniker Little Stevie Winwood considering he started his career super young as well and he went by Stevie in his younger years.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:18pm doctorjazz:

Donut remember them being covered much, guess I missed the covers,
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:19pm doctorjazz:

Don't...that is...
Avatar 10:20pm coelacanth∅:

none of these versions are familiar so far, but i knew several songs by their covers before i'd ever heard of traffic
Avatar 10:21pm Franco Twinkie:

Doc, for a minute I thought Donut was an English band I missed.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:21pm doctorjazz:

Haha!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:22pm Wendy del Formaggio:

Doctorjazz: I think "donut" is an excellent substitute for "don't." I often use "otter" in place of "ought to." As in, "You otter change the radio station back to WFMU."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:23pm Wendy del Formaggio:

I would totally buy a Vyvyan Heavy Concept Album. Very metal!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:23pm doctorjazz:

In think Winwood did get called Little Stevie some early on. But, there was a famous little Stevie (Wonder) out there.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:26pm Funky16Corners:

@FRanco - There was a UK popsike band called the Crocheted Donut Ring
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:26pm Funky16Corners:

@Doc - I think you're right. He was 14 when he started out
Avatar 10:27pm coelacanth∅:

at one point in my childhood there were 5 versions of feelin' alright in the house, between my older brother and myself.
(3 dog night; rare earth; grand funk railroad; Joe Cocker; traffic)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:27pm doctorjazz:

And this song Feelin Alright, is one of the best written 2 chord songs ever!
Avatar 10:28pm Jeff Ash:

Many fine covers of "Feelin' Alright" to choose from, including that Lou Rawls version.
  10:28pm rw:

Iggy Pop should cover that song, Feelin' Alright.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:28pm Funky16Corners:

It probably kept Dave Mason financially secure for a long time
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:28pm doctorjazz:

Buttermilk Bottom??!???
Avatar 10:29pm Franco Twinkie:

Stevie Winwood and Rebop Kwaku Baah were going to team up with Arthur Lee and Jimi Hendrix, but then Hendrix went did something else...oh yeah, he died.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:29pm Funky16Corners:

Yes indeed!
Avatar 10:30pm coelacanth∅:

and though generally speaking Mason wrote a small minority of my favorite traffic songs, he did write feelin' alright - and another of my faves: house for everyone.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:30pm doctorjazz:

Yeah, Franco, he screwed Miles Davis too.
  10:31pm rw:

This playlist may go down in history as the one with the coolest band names. It'll be in the running at least.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:31pm doctorjazz:

(Always loved this song, Medicated Goo).
Avatar 10:32pm coelacanth∅:

(i think Jimi checking out just screwed Miles before Miles could screw him)
Avatar 10:33pm Franco Twinkie:

Yup. Also Dealer. File under loaded.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:33pm Wendy del Formaggio:

I'm really loving this show tonight. Thanks for the good vibes, Larry Grogan!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:34pm Funky16Corners:

Glad you're digging it Wendy!
Avatar 10:34pm coelacanth∅:

i heard dealer by someone else first too, though i cannot remember by whom
  10:39pm Dean:

Wow, what an overdue theme. Traffic really deserves a lot more love than they typically receive.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:39pm Funky16Corners:

Hey Dean!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:40pm doctorjazz:

We're pretty much in the earliest Traffic stuff. Have to admit, once Winwood went solo, didn't pay much attention (Low Spark was the last, not counting Blind Faith).
Avatar 10:40pm Franco Twinkie:

I can honestly say I despise traffic, but love Traffic.
Avatar 10:40pm Erica:

Hi Dean! Neat hearing later Woody Herman stuff.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:41pm Funky16Corners:

Tonight we got up to Low Spark
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:41pm Funky16Corners:

@Erica - His Cadet and later Fantasy albums are really cool
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:42pm doctorjazz:

All those 45s and Lps, I'm drooling (messing up my phone).
Avatar 10:44pm Franco Twinkie:

Woody Herman was not afraid of putting on a paisley scarf.
  10:45pm Dean:

Alan Broadbent joined Herman's crowd around this time. I *love* Broadbent as pianist and composer. Once hired his trio to play a celebration at the public library where I worked. It was amazing.
Avatar 10:45pm coelacanth∅:

i once mentioned to another drummer stream radio host who said he never got into traffic and had never been tempted to that i thought he'd like some of it (as if i'd know)
i wonder if someone of more authority than myself might convince him to check into it!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:45pm Funky16Corners:

Woody was exceedingly hip, and kept a hot band
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:46pm Parq:

"Moves of Vegetable Centuries" is my new favorite album title of the week. And digging the Woody -- still searching for relevance.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:46pm Funky16Corners:

@C - I wonder what the sticking point was? Not digging the jazz stuff? Or the psychedelic stuff?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:47pm Funky16Corners:

Hey Parq! Isn't that cool?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:47pm Wendy del Formaggio:

Parq!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:47pm Parq:

Vendala!
Avatar 10:49pm Erica:

Now this is a cool cover of Paper Sun
Avatar 10:49pm Franco Twinkie:

Coel, If this person was not persuaded by your superior wit and wisdom, I would say said person was beyond help.
Avatar 10:49pm coelacanth∅:

Larry i don't want to reveal who! and if i reason out why i thought he'd like it i might, so...
but maybe it was just a bad taste from all the commercial stuff that came later, and the earlier stuff that maybe got played on classic rock stations? (did it? i don't know)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:49pm Wendy del Formaggio:

Nice to see you here, Parq!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:50pm Funky16Corners:

@C - If he/she was close to my age, they probably caught a LOT of Traffic on the radio as a kid. I loved it. Some folks might have gotten sick of it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:50pm Parq:

I'm sure Woody and his arrangers were inspired by the BS&T version. In fairness, I also think of that as the definitive version.
Avatar 10:51pm coelacanth∅:

haha Thanks Franco but i can say this person is miles beyond me in certain realms
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:51pm Funky16Corners:

@Erica - This is a really good album. Featuring Mick Taylor and a couple of the guys from the Average White Band
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:51pm doctorjazz:

I've said this before, but I always disliked Mann, but hearing him often on FMU, I've gotten to really like him.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:52pm Funky16Corners:

@Parq - Woody sdid a bunch of other cool things around the same time, including a cover of Sly Stone's 'Sex Machine'
  10:52pm rw:

The video for Traffic's Paper Sun is pretty great. They're just sort of hanging out and looking around at a museum. And singing a little every once in a while.
Avatar 10:52pm still b/p:

re: old-schoolers seeking to keep padding in the current -- I saw a clip this evening of Skitch Henderson opening a Hullabaloo show in '66.
Avatar 10:52pm Franco Twinkie:

Coel, have you ever done a show?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:53pm Funky16Corners:

Hey SBP! I just saw a poster for a Batman themed dhow at Shea Stadium in 66 that featured the Rascals, Smokey and the Miracles and Skitch Henderson and the Tonight Show Orchestra!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:55pm TheNewLexGofer:

Good evening from Perry County. Coffee's on!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:56pm Funky16Corners:

Hey NewLexGofer!
Avatar 10:56pm northguineahills:

aloha, Larry!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:56pm Funky16Corners:

NGH!
Avatar 10:57pm Franco Twinkie:

Having suffered through BS&T's in real time, I can say that David Clayton Thomas gave me a rash every time I heard him.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:58pm Funky16Corners:

He's one of my favorite singers!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:58pm Funky16Corners:

Though I hear he was a jerk...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:58pm TheNewLexGofer:

Evenin', Larry!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:59pm doctorjazz:

Infamous version of Dear Mr Fantasy (at least when it came out
Monk quote!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:00pm Funky16Corners:

@Franco - Here's BST with a different singer, Jerry Fisher
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:00pm doctorjazz:

Back to the comment I started... All Kooper and Mike Bloomfield's Dear Mr Fantasy were all over FM radio when it came out
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:01pm Funky16Corners:

Supersession?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:02pm TheNewLexGofer:

@doctorjazz: Springsteen hated Mann for what he did to "Blinded by the Light"...
Avatar 11:02pm Erica:

"Thank you Blood and Sweat. Sorry to hear about Tears." (Anyone get the reference?)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:02pm doctorjazz:

(Got carried away with the BST Monk quote, Well You Needn't. I didn't know Monk's music when I first Grady the BST album, so it went past me them).
Avatar 11:02pm Franco Twinkie:

Oh he can sing. That's obvious. It was his demeanor, presentation and just general grating Davidness! Can Buddy Rich play the drums? What a question! But..
Avatar 11:03pm Erica:

Or was it "Sorry about Tears."
  11:04pm Dean:

Springsteen has no authority for hating anything musical.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:04pm Funky16Corners:

@NewLexGofer - Wasn't that Manfred Mann?
Avatar 11:04pm coelacanth∅:

bs&t did at least one other traffic song too
Avatar 11:05pm coelacanth∅:

yeah it was a different man
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:05pm TheNewLexGofer:

Yes. Got in late. Guess I missed something...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:05pm doctorjazz:

It was on The Live Adventures of Mike Bloomfield and All Kooper.
Avatar 11:06pm Erica:

Hi NLG. I'm Erica.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:06pm Funky16Corners:

@C - BST also did Smiling Phases
  11:07pm Dean:

Nothing reaches When the Eagle Flies? I actually like that album a lot.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:07pm Parq:

I dug Jerry Fisher in BS&T. He sang lead in their great cover of City's "Snow Queen". But I drift afield of the Traffic topic.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:08pm Funky16Corners:

@Dean - Didn't have any covers of stuff after Low Spark
Avatar 11:08pm northguineahills:

I dig every version of John Barleycorn I hear, even Joe Walsh (I have Joe Walsh album somewhere).

Hey, I like what Herbie Mann did w/ Stereolab…..
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:09pm Funky16Corners:

I love Herbie Mann. Underrated master of musical fusions and a very hip bandleader. He had some amazing sidemen along the way
Avatar 11:09pm coelacanth∅:

2 bs&t songs Parq...it's already on the table!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:09pm Parq:

We "studied" John Barleycorn in high school English class -- a poetry section that included Dylan, Crosby and others. The search for relevance indeed.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:09pm TheNewLexGofer:

Herbie, not Manfred. Oops...

Hi, Erica.

New (to me) Joe Walsh!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:09pm Funky16Corners:

@NGH - John Barleycorn is in many way the quintessential British folk number
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:11pm Parq:

Was this Capaldi tribute a fundraiser? Medical costs or something?
Avatar 11:11pm coelacanth∅:

i've heard a cover of "sometimes i feel so uninspired" but, like the original, it's rather uninspired
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:12pm Funky16Corners:

@Parq - Memorial. He passed from stomach cancer in 2005
Avatar 11:14pm northguineahills:

@Larry: I have Herbie's Bossa and Psyche(ish) albums....
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:14pm doctorjazz:

Rickie Lee manages to stick close to the original, yet make it sound like her own.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:14pm Funky16Corners:

Yeah, I really dig this version
Avatar 11:15pm still b/p:

The things ya loin. I noticed the Lou Rawls album was named for his cover of the song that gave BS&T one of their biggest hits, so I was looking up who wrote it, and not only did I learn that but also who else covered You Made Me So Very Happy. One of the more unexpected names on that list: Bobbie Gentry!
  11:15pm Dean:

And then there's Winwood's work with Stomu Yamashta, which is lovely.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:16pm Funky16Corners:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:22pm doctorjazz:

Yup, Rick Gretch.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:22pm Funky16Corners:

Nite Parq!
Avatar 11:24pm Franco Twinkie:

In my mind I always associate this song with the Manson murders which is unfortunate, but the album was in heavy rotation when all that shit happened.
Avatar 11:25pm Erica:

Which song? "Can't Find My Way Home"?
Avatar 11:26pm Franco Twinkie:

Yes.
Avatar 11:27pm coelacanth∅:

can't find my way home was revelatory when i first heard it (which was several years after the manson murders)
Avatar 11:28pm Erica:

Wow
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:28pm doctorjazz:

I was wondering if they'd have the fires tho go for the guitar break. They did, but didn't quite get there inn it, methinks.
Avatar 11:29pm coelacanth∅:

...then again i was young enough when the manson people did their deed that the impact was minimal at the time
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:30pm doctorjazz:

(Should have said...guts to go for the guitar break...one of these days I'll learn too proof read...)
Avatar 11:31pm coelacanth∅:

Larry are you gonna play Buddy Holly's cover of well all right?!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:31pm Funky16Corners:

I was 6 going on 7 when the Manson murders happened. I don't think I had any idea about any of it until I was in high school and Helter Skelter came out
Avatar 11:31pm Franco Twinkie:

Doc, I agree. Good sense should have told them during the playback that they should scratch the guitar break.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:31pm Funky16Corners:

@C - No, not tonight
Avatar 11:33pm Franco Twinkie:

People in L.A. were totally wigged out that summer.
Avatar 11:33pm coelacanth∅:

(you know i was kidding)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:35pm Funky16Corners:

You never know, C. You never know...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:35pm Funky16Corners:

@Franco - It really put a chill over the country but must have been especially, specifically weird in LA
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:36pm doctorjazz:

I laughed, Coel...though it would have been a cool change up.
Loved the I Barritas, and Mcllwaine had nice pipes.
  11:37pm Dean:

I clearly remember (ha, clearly!) seeing the LAT headlines on August 9, 1969, at a restaurant in -- was it Malibu? -- with my parents. Ten years later a bunch of us drove to Cielo Drive to view the outskirts of the scene.
Avatar 11:40pm coelacanth∅:

maybe trying to avoid paying for permission to do the songs
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:42pm Granny Spicy Tuna:

I was born exactly between the Manson Family murders and Woodstock. I've always said that describes the family i came from.
Avatar 11:43pm Erica:

Haha Granny.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:43pm Funky16Corners:

@Dean - I can only imagine what the vibe must have been before they knew who had done the killings. The rumors must have been crazy, and then it all turned out much weirder than anyone could have imagined
Avatar 11:44pm Jeff Ash:

Quintessential late-night FM free-form radio cut.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:45pm Funky16Corners:

Indeed. As late night as late night ever got
Avatar 11:45pm Erica:

Hey Ash better late than never.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:47pm doctorjazz:

Pretty cool version,b don't know them except the name
Avatar 11:47pm Jeff Ash:

This is right in my wheelhouse. It was about this time of night -- not quite deep in the night, but you could see it and feel it from there -- that we'd hear this on the local FM free-form radio of the time, the early '70s.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:48pm Funky16Corners:

They are HUGE in the foundation of the 'jam band' thing. One of those bands that doesn't poke their heads up into the mainstream too much but has a really big, devoted underground audience. I have a buddy that owns a record store down in DC who went to college with them and was around for their earliest days
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:49pm doctorjazz:

Yup, Jeff, rememberit as well.
Avatar 11:49pm Franco Twinkie:

I love this! This is the difference between been a young person and a decreped old person. One night when I worked in Hollywood after putting in a 12 hour day, my boss and I got totally ripped on super grass and went to the Roxy to see Wide Spread Panic, even though we had to be back on stage at 6am. It would kill me today. That is if I had a job to go to.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:49pm Funky16Corners:

@Jeff - We're lucky to have been around when commercial radio played things like this,
Avatar 11:50pm Little Danny:

Awesome and heady show Larry. Thanks a bunch!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:50pm Funky16Corners:

@Franco - I feel that feeling all the time. Remembering the days where I'd be out all Friday night, go to work Saturday morning, take a disco nap and then head back out for more fun on Saturday night. I think if I tried that these days I'de be dead halfway through
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:50pm Funky16Corners:

Thanks Danny!
  11:52pm Dean:

I have no doubt that they got airplay on KPFK's Thursday Lunch show (which aired Friday nights) featuring jam bands.
Avatar 11:52pm Jeff Ash:

Amen, Larry. That late-night free-form FM radio was so influential. My constant companion, and one that opened my eyes and ears to so much.
Avatar 11:52pm Franco Twinkie:

Said boss went out with Patricia Krenwinkle in high school.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:53pm chresti:

Thanks Larry! I'm fading fast...
  11:53pm rw:

I'm headed to the other room to catch the remainder. Thank you F16C for another entertaining, enlightening and informative two hours of music and conversation! Take care everyone!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:53pm Funky16Corners:

@Jeff - College radio carried on the experimental feel, but in the punk realm. Not much in the way of dreamy/head music.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:53pm Funky16Corners:

Nite Chresti! rw!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:54pm Funky16Corners:

@Franco - Whoa...way to bury the lede!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:54pm TheNewLexGofer:

I'll be back for more of this. Nytol!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:54pm doctorjazz:
