"I listened yesterday. It's no reflection on you but I could'nt see where you were going or what you were going for. This early seventies thing did'nt get noticed the first time and you talk about friends of like Dealney and Bonnie who had records out like we're supposed to remember who they are. Then you play this long winded free jazz stuff that really grates on my nerves. And that noise without a beat and sounds like someones being pinched. Then you play a reggae song, I think you called it Dub, to what, be cool? You seem to really fetishize the whole folk thing too which is obnoxious to us who don't even care. I liked it when you played that punk song though. I like Joe Belock a lot." (Visit homepage.)

Set the calendar for Friday. That's the day we wake up.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:09am

hello fellow Allenites.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 9:09am

Pretty sure very Friday morning starts with JA calling the station at 8:59 from a heliport in Brooklyn, telling Clay to cue up "Wake Up," and then a helicopter ride to the roof of WFMU, where JA is descending from a rope ladder literally right now to take over the station controls.

Ya know what karl that sounds pretty realistic actually
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 9:11am

I have heard reports of falling vinyl copies of "Wake Up" occasionally hitting pedestrians in Lower Manhattan. I suspect these reports are related.

LOL. Btw what's this song sampling?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:12am

interesting programming choice

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:13am

Hey! Once is enough!

Nice set so far. Just what the dr ordered.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 9:33am

Am I the only one who heard an insane cut up of the last half hour of Clay's show on the radiorethink stream just now? It was grabbing random 5 second chunks of the last half hour and playing them out of order. I reloaded the radiorethink window and it works fine now. Like I said I thought Olivia was glitching the stream or something.
Listener Robert:

I commented on Irwin's show about the evidence from the Summer 1986 LCD that DJs were hard to get -- 4 & 5 hour shows, DJs taking 2 SCHEDULED shows a week, a bit of listener art consisting of a note calling for help because needing someone to sub for them.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:33am

hello, other John :)
John from Florham Park:

@Karlward never heard of radiorethink

John Allen, I hear you're in a punk mood today. Check out Surfbort. Punk rock at it's finest.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:53am

@HH - unfortunately they're raising the question of how punk is it to be sponsored by Gucci. Surfbort and Amyl and the Sniffers.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:56am

Anybody know what's going on in Brooklyn/Queens? On my way in I passed literally 9 million fire trucks headed south through Williamsburg and Long Island City.

@listener robert i picked up a couple old LCD’s at the record fair. from 86/87, from before i started listening in 91. pretty fascinating, at least for this fmu head. (the letter from the anonymous listener complaining how the “real wfmu” is gone, and SMK’s response?)
Listener Robert:

I do that H2O2-in-the-ears sideways on the pillow too. Hate when I can't tell whether muffled hearing is an outer or middle ear problem, but usually I have wax regardless.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:59am

Dead air?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:59am

all a sudden I hear nothing on the stream for a minute or two.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:59am

Love hearing about the old LCDs
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:59am

Oh it's just very low and hummy and Bryce-tastic.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:00am

Deadly Air
Listener Robert:

Andy, many of us must've heard about WFMU the same way I did in 1980, and listened only at night to the likes of Frank O'Toole, Pat Duncan, Paul Cavanaugh (and Morbid) and Jim Price, and got a mistaken impression of WFMU, thinking it was all punk, not realizing that's just how things lined up temporarily for us. That letter writer apparently thought the rest of WFMU's programming was some new departure. He was a little snotty, Ken was a little snotty back.
Avatar 10:03am

HEY You will hate this: but take a ton of goldenseal extract and orange peel zest and clove - it will clear you out poor baby.
Avatar 10:04am
John Allen:

i'll get on that, thanks Flow
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:07am
Haiku Henry:

@Rob (Jerzcity) - Makes me think of when Rollins did the Calvin Klein ad. Maybe it makes them more punk? or not? Still love both Surfbort and Rollins. Amyl and the Sniffers are great too.

I haven't had nearly as much trouble since I started eating local honey but my allergies and sinus problems already come and go randomly anyway, so maybe the local honey is just tasty and actually has no woo-woo curative home-remedy effects at all. I have no idea. I really need several clones of myself so I can do experiments on them. Some of them get local honey, some of them get goldenseal and valerian root or dandelion extracts or whatever nasty thing is the current fad, some get expensive kombucha, some of them just get thwacked with wet noodles.

Krys O.:

Listener Robert, I was on the air from 1985-1991 and on some schedules I had two shows a week. One week, I also did three fill-ins. Five shows in one week! But our reception was only within a 50 mile radius, so it was for naught.
Listener Robert:

And the funny thing is, I might have already had that LCD in the moldy papers in the garage, don't remember if I was getting it that far back, got this copy recently from a friend who also subscribed. But back then I didn't listen to as MANY programs as now, and at the time of that issue I'd just moved into a shadow zone that made WFMU only an occasional treat for a while.

For the ear... the Mullein plant Verbascum Thapsus. Mullein ear oil extract.
Listener Robert:

And not archived either, Krys, except for whatever cassettes you might've made and kept yourself or that listeners made off air.

Barney Grubbs:

I suspect these things work differently for everybody, but combo of allegra and morning/evening saline nose spray has been working okay this year (subbed in the saline this year for azelastine spray and seems to working). But for clogged ear stuff I give in & take a pseudoephedrine.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 10:17am
Krys O.:

Listener Robert, I used to tape my show each week, but only a few survived due to theft or attrition. The Subgenius rants that I did are still preserved in the archives.

Yep, Mullein is a common vanguard weed. The leaves are super soft and was used as toilet paper back in the day. The plant is also known as cowboy toilet paper.

The Oscar:

Mornin' all! I was actually just having hellish ear problems as well this past week. Wound up just blasting it all out with an ear syringe full of warm water. It was... productive. Anyway, I can hear again!
Listener Robert:

Krys, YOU did the Subgenius? I'd assumed those came from Ivan Stang. I listened to some of those in the 1980s, only I wasn't sure it was on WFMU rather than another station.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:26am

Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 10:34am
Krys O.:

Listener Robert, I featured a half hour of tapes from Stang, but I wrote rants to introduce each feature.

those metal wares!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:39am

@Krys O. - did you have anything to do with the UHF broadcasts of WFMU television in the early 90'z? Very subgeniusy.

hERE comes the train! :)

工作在这里堆积得更高。如果计算机所有者错过了他们的约会,则推迟了这个项目。在网络故障期间我必须离开这里。 TSOL听起来很棒。

Did anyone else attend or remember the concert promoted by Richard of Synthetic Pleasure with Don Slepian and Emerald Web? OMG, that was an amazing show.
Listener Robert:

Krys, I do recall someone's talking before or after taped segments from Stang, but I don't recall whether I thought those fun or just annoying interruptions. But then, such is the work of a DJ, huh?
Listener Robert:

Zetti, both I and my friend, unknown to each other at the time, listened to Synthetic Pleasure, but I had another friend who was friendly with Don Slepian. I have the latter's Music Through The Ages calling card.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:57am
Passaic River Blues:

This is pretty incredible.
Listener Robert:

Then again my friend, Greg who recently gave me that old LCD, had mixed up Synthetic Pleasure with Vin Scelsa's program, so I'm not really sure what he listened to. We each have a lot of trouble with names, and the intervening decades don't help with memory.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:58am

To be more specific, I've been getting the Highland Valley Apiaries honey at Trader Joe's. Like I said, no idea if it's actually got any woo-woo magic in it or my lack of allergy problems lately is a coincidence, but it's really goddamn delicious.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 10:59am
Krys O.:

1. No, I had nothing to do with the UHF broadcasts. 2. I wasn't the only one who featured the Subgenius tapes. Here is a link to my archives to judge for yourself again. wfmu.org...

@Listenr Robert, I'm pretty sure Slepian lives in the Poconos and continues to make music.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:03am

Pseudoephedrine used to work well for me, but I seem to have gotten acclimated to it now. Either that or the Man neutered its powers so that bikers can't make meth out of it anymore.

Zbigniew Cybulski was the James Dean of Poland. I would free the bees from their capsule. My dad had one nostril cauterized because of frequent epistaxis which I also suffer from. I had my throat cauterized when I was a kid due to frequent sore throats. Having a needle stuck in the back of my throat hurt like a mofo.
Listener Robert:

Thanks, Krys, maybe I'll relive those nights. I won't complain if it turns out I want to skip your intros, because even with your favorite DJ, aren't there SOME times you shout back at the radio, just get one with it? OTOH, I might prefer to listen to ONLY your intros, better than the part from Stang, in which case I'll tell you.

Thanks for the tip, Zetti. I think Don Slepian was then a Jerseyite and my friend Ed's interaction with him was over interests other than music. I think I tried to phone him once on a long shot he'd be interested commercially in a completely other thing of mine.
