This is where all of culture and all of time are collapsed into one seductive portal and viewed through the panoramic lens of the exotic. Come and embark on an armchair-travel virtual-voyage to the heart of timeless darkness and beyond; embrace the numinous monolith of the exotic immensity. Let us find that place where hybridization meets its destiny as pure fantasy. Let us become observers observing those others who are ourselves. You wear your mask and I'll wear mine.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:31pm chresti:

I think Rob W played some Romperayo recently?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:34pm chresti:

Good to know, Columbia is ground zero for cumbia.
Avatar 7:39pm Flash Strap:

Yeah, it begins in Columbia and spreads out through Latin America; when it reaches the Peruvian mountains, it's as though it's caught there among the clouds and begins to transform into something truly mystical
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:39pm chresti:

I think the gateway Cumbia portal for me was Peruvian Chicha
Avatar 7:39pm Flash Strap:

me too
  7:40pm Jeff g.:

Hi. Great music to cook to, maestro.
Avatar 7:41pm TDK60:

Colombia si, entonces...
Avatar 7:42pm Flash Strap:

Hi Jeff G.! I agree, this morning i was cooking up some plantains listening to this stuff and it was right
Avatar 7:42pm Franco Twinkie:

I just woke up. I was having a dream I was rowing a canoe down a river of fluorescent blood.

Avatar 7:49pm Franco Twinkie:

Yup, I think I overdid it. I'm afraid to go in the kitchen and get some coffee because the path thru the living room is crawling with spiders made out of red yard.
Avatar 7:51pm Flash Strap:

hello father fleep eep eep eep eep
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:53pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...the red yard terrifies me...
  7:53pm Jeff g.:

My sleeping dog did not care for this one.
Avatar 7:53pm Flash Strap:

Avatar 7:55pm TDK60:

Avatar 7:55pm junglepete:

Hello Flash! Wow Cumbia del Sal is doing things to me.
Avatar 7:56pm Flash Strap:

no the coffee will kill you if you take it now, the spiders want you to do something else in the kitchen but I don't know what yet
Avatar 7:56pm Flash Strap:

@james, NGH: yeah it's a singular treat, this one
Avatar 7:56pm Flash Strap:

Jungle Pete! get in here, brother! great to see you
Avatar 7:57pm northguineahills:

As I mentioned before, my wife bought me cumbia recs in Mexico based on how scantily clothed the women on the cover were. (we found it usually meant the music was better, even her being a feminist.
Avatar 7:57pm Flash Strap:

there should be just reams of cumbia moogsploitation, but alas
Avatar 7:58pm junglepete:

I'm here, Flash. And I'm vibrating.
Avatar 8:00pm Flash Strap:

yes, pete! how goes?
Avatar 8:00pm Flash Strap:

I'd love to hear the records in those cheesecake covers NGH
Avatar 8:00pm Flash Strap:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:01pm chresti:

Vitamin C, will help bring it down a notch, Franco
Avatar 8:02pm Flash Strap:

great cover on this lp, love these guys truncated white slacks
Avatar 8:02pm northguineahills:

@Flash: Mexican and Colombian. We had to go to some shady barrios to get a few of them. (and I stood out as a sore thumb gringo).
Avatar 8:04pm Flash Strap:

that sounds great ngh
Avatar 8:04pm Franco Twinkie:

I terrified to leave the living room! I want fruit salad....I think.
Avatar 8:05pm Flash Strap:

Avatar 8:09pm Flash Strap:

@Jungle Peter: preparing NC for your arrival that's what i'm doin
Avatar 8:09pm hyde:

i was gonna say before that the tiger cover with the weird group insert was my fave
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:09pm chresti:

This is wild
Avatar 8:10pm Flash Strap:

@Hyde: wise choice. Petrolero is pretty grand as well, love how the font and the feathers match
Avatar 8:11pm Flash Strap:

INSANE vocals!
Avatar 8:14pm junglepete:

@ Flash

Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:14pm nostrangerer:

Whoa, whole lot of cumbia going on, cumbia all over, and other assorted malapropisms with shakin' and cumbia.
Avatar 8:14pm Franco Twinkie:

The dance of the oil tanker?? What does that mean!?!
Avatar 8:15pm Flash Strap:

Hi there Nostrangerer!
Avatar 8:17pm Flash Strap:

a metaphor, i'd imagine
Avatar 8:18pm Flash Strap:

i'd guess this Nacho song predates '76
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:18pm melinda:

hi friends
Avatar 8:19pm Flash Strap:

hi melinda!
Avatar 8:20pm Flash Strap:

great raw vocal from Celia Estremor
Avatar 8:21pm hyde:

hey melinda!
Avatar 8:22pm Flash Strap:

sounding a little tame in present company, but god I love Los Diplomaticos
Avatar 8:23pm Franco Twinkie:

This one is extra whacky.
Avatar 8:28pm Flash Strap:

This Trio Serenata is so beautiful

The contact high from this show is something powerful.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:39pm chresti:

Very eye catching for sure-that cover

Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:46pm chresti:

The pipes
Avatar 8:47pm hyde:

diggin' the flutes here
Avatar 8:47pm Flash Strap:

i do tire of hearing versions of Condor Pasa, but never Valicha. It's so eternal in my mind, though I think it was written in 1946 or so
Avatar 8:48pm Flash Strap:

yeah, the huayno song form is really heavy into peruvian pan flutes i believe
Avatar 8:48pm Franco Twinkie:

Little Apple and Her Band, I like that.
Avatar 8:49pm Flash Strap:

god listen to those deep gut sounds that Los Wembler lays down. Legend
Avatar 8:49pm Flash Strap:

so heavy
Avatar 8:49pm hyde:

the internets say 1942 for Valicha, in a composiotion called Tusuy
Avatar 8:50pm Flash Strap:

@hyde: ah yes that's correct. interesting story to it as well
Avatar 8:51pm northguineahills:

ahora, tengo hambre de una manzana!
Avatar 8:52pm Franco Twinkie:

slippin' and slidin' on the deck of the oil tanker.
Avatar 8:52pm Flash Strap:

Los Wembler's consists of Salomón Sánchez Saavedra and his five children, and has a pretty interesting commitment to being a working class or classless music
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:53pm Uncle Michael:

Donde esta la biblioteca?
Avatar 8:55pm Franco Twinkie:

La biblioteca es enfrente de la camioneta azul.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:55pm chresti:

Greasy dance, @Franco
Avatar 8:55pm Flash Strap:

Hola Tío Miguel
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:57pm Uncle Michael:

I'm a poor patron of the archives, but this is a playlist I have to catch up on.
Avatar 8:57pm northguineahills:

I detect Ren & Stimpy references …..
Avatar 8:58pm Franco Twinkie:

Surfing south of the border.
Avatar 8:58pm northguineahills:

I think it's odd my espanol has gotten better since I left NYC (rarely hear it here)
Avatar 8:58pm Flash Strap:

Honored, tio mio
Avatar 8:59pm Flash Strap:

seriously HUGE sound from Juaneco here
Avatar 8:59pm northguineahills:

Yeah, this is totally UM material!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:00pm melinda:

I like Juaneco y Su Combo, and their caftans.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:00pm Uncle Michael:

I don't know why I'm so crazy for cumbia. It just sort of happened.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:01pm chresti:

It's impossible to resist
Avatar 9:03pm Flash Strap:

two horrific air crashes in this band's history, with severe casualties each time. such a passionate group, with an affinity for shamanism, jungle themes, and affecting Amazonian costumes
Avatar 9:04pm Flash Strap:

another father-and-his-many-sons group, as well
Avatar 9:04pm coelacanth∅:

hola Evan y exploradores
Avatar 9:05pm northguineahills:

me gusta cumbia de organo (o esta Wurlitzer?)
Avatar 9:06pm Franco Twinkie:

Did someone say caftans!?!
Avatar 9:06pm northguineahills:

(Still Spanglishing, I can't even English, what do you expect ;p)
Avatar 9:07pm Flash Strap:

hola coelacanth!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:07pm chresti:

Me gustan todas
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:08pm melinda:

I just looked out my window and saw the moon peeking out behind the trees, it looks really cool and I don't usually see it from my seat at the computer.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:09pm melinda:

@Franco check out "El Brujo" album.
Avatar 9:09pm TDK60:

Avatar 9:11pm Flash Strap:

need to find more of the Gatos Blancos, what a guitar sound
Avatar 9:12pm Flash Strap:

This one from the Orientales is a classic for a reason
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:13pm chresti:

On the Brujos album cover
Avatar 9:13pm Franco Twinkie:

This guy is like totally freaking!
Avatar 9:13pm northguineahills:

Do I qualify as a white cat?
Avatar 9:15pm northguineahills:

(really want to join the band, maybe on tambourine...)
Avatar 9:17pm Flash Strap:

Los Destellos really were sort of like a Peruvian Ventures, in that they seem to have just absorbed and played everything. tho i think they may be more influenced by the Tornados, if I were guessing
Avatar 9:19pm TDK60:

didn't we discuss caftans before? mine would be orchid? (my memory gland...)
Avatar 9:20pm Flash Strap:

I guess they've had 90 members come and go, all told! long-running, popular group in Peru
Avatar 9:21pm coelacanth∅:

that's like the ink spots! ...or the electric prunes?
Avatar 9:22pm Flash Strap:

yes to both; also Yes
Avatar 9:23pm Flash Strap:

Avatar 9:24pm coelacanth∅:

i guess a lot...pretty things?
but not too many that've been as long-running as the ink spots (or, i guess los destellos)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:24pm nostrangerer:

i think we've left the cumbia zone.....
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:25pm nostrangerer:

or the cumbia zone goes farther out than I imagined...
Avatar 9:25pm Flash Strap:

@C: yeah the ink spots really are the all-stars in this category
Avatar 9:25pm Flash Strap:

This galax is boiling
Avatar 9:26pm Flash Strap:

@Nostrangerer: it goes OUT, Way Out
Avatar 9:26pm northguineahills:

Unfortunately, finding Peruvian Chicha/Cumbia is near impossible (even going to the source, from what I hear).
Avatar 9:26pm Flash Strap:

yeah i bet, i don;t have anything at all much to my despair
Avatar 9:31pm coelacanth∅:

i probably can credit Doug Shulkind for introducing me to cumbia, many years ago
though i would've gotten into it by c.2005 when i became friends with a peruvian guy who came to town and started a Brilliant and baddass cumbia group -unfortunately short-lived as he went back to peru.
Avatar 9:32pm Flash Strap:

Nothing else I've heard by Los Galax comes even close to the legendary "Lamento" but this weird party track is pretty cool
Avatar 9:33pm Flash Strap:

@C: Doug has done so many good works, turned on so many minds on so many subjects. He has been the wellspring of many a musical obsession
Avatar 9:34pm Flash Strap:

reminds me of Beach Boys Party, this track
Avatar 9:34pm northguineahills:

TBH, it was /dj rupture who introduced me to cumbia, when I had a chance to dj in Mexico, you know what my goal was.....
Avatar 9:36pm Flash Strap:

Maximiliano Chávez y los Orientales de Paramonga is, I think, the same Orientales who did "Lobos al Escape", fyi
Avatar 9:36pm northguineahills:

(oh yeah, and meet my wife [totally not for rekkids] ;p)
Avatar 9:36pm Flash Strap:

sounds like a good gig
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:37pm chresti:

I think Buena Vista Social Club pointed me toward the cumbia
Avatar 9:38pm northguineahills:

I saw a live gig w/ /rupture around 2001, and he played cumbia. Then I heard Doug play some, and I was hooked...
Avatar 9:39pm northguineahills:

Clicky starred the episode, as my ckicky-star finger is getting tired,,,
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:40pm melinda:

I think I learned of cumbia from the Rough Guide series.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:41pm melinda:

Spaghetti western vibe here.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:41pm chresti:

Quantic, DJ Rupture, Ganas, led me to chicha and cumbia
Avatar 9:41pm Flash Strap:

weirdly refreshing sound from Los Yungas, very clean somehow, in a very nice way
Avatar 9:41pm TDK60:

Los Yungas had those big amps..
Avatar 9:42pm coelacanth∅:

i got a cumbia marathon premium cd years ago. i'm not home or i'd check; for some reason don't remember if it was from Doug's show, Rob's or someone else's.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:42pm doctorjazz:

Great sounds, thanks, Flash!
Avatar 9:42pm Flash Strap:

Quantic compiled quite a few of the Colombian things I was mentioning earlier, I think he did the Original Sound of Cumbia comp
Avatar 9:44pm northguineahills:

@melinda: I got that album after Mexico when Tower Recs had a fire sale. (I heard that Morricone vibe as well)>
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:44pm chresti:

Such a clear sound, that guitar on the last track, Los Yungas
Avatar 9:46pm northguineahills:

@chresti: check out Uproot Andy & Gecko Jones, they do contemporary club/bass cumbia-isms...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:47pm JWR:

Chiming in to say thanks for that Cumbia set. It was killer!
Avatar 9:48pm coelacanth∅:

to be honest i rarely listened to rupture when he was on fmu -more dancey than my liking was, though i might get into it now...for some reason was compelled to get one of his premiums though -an mp3 disc with a flac file available to create 3 cds. one of the best premiums! (not because it's so much; it's just very good!)
Avatar 9:49pm northguineahills:

Chicha was looked down upon in Lima as 'poor working class music' until Peruvian-Americans started to embrace it, then, it became trendy in the capital,
Avatar 9:49pm northguineahills:

@coel: I have that one!!!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:51pm chresti:

Agree with JWR
Avatar 9:51pm coelacanth∅:

ngh -excellent right?!

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:56pm nostrangerer:

ah yes, nice and mellow, great closing, great show,
Avatar 9:56pm northguineahills:

@coel: Oh yeah. I had a coworker leaving back to Hong Kong w/in a week, and heard him listening to Algerian Rai, by the end of the week I had him addicted to all things /rupture. (I've only been a successful acolyte for Doug w/ my wife).

Yaye, cumbia rebejada (I had to go into even places my wife was wary of going to get cumbia rebajada recs, as they were drug fronts)
Avatar 9:57pm northguineahills:

Thanks, Evan, I can give you a dissertation on cumbia rebajada if you ever want, Monterrey, Mexico is the source, and where I met my wife....

Just an(other) exquisite romp, Flash!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:54am Stanley:

Terrific show. Particularly enjoyed Los Galax, sounding very much a rhumba/soukous crossover (but going west instead of the other way). Thanks, as always, Evan
