There still is oldies radio (WCBS- fm), but because we're old, the 70s-80s-90s format doesn't seem like oldies!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:15pm Sid:

Aww. Shame it's not fundraising time. I'd request a double shot - 2 generations of Shelleys.
Avatar 12:16pm Michael Shelley:

jack - have you listened to it lately - almost NO 70s
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:18pm Sid:

The only oldies near NYC off the top of my head is low power 107.9 out of Woodbridge. Also 103.3 HD 3 if you have an HD radio in the car.

That's true, Michael -- I was just googling and their format, called "classic hits," is considered the successor to "oldies" -- mid-70s to mid-90s but a real focus on the MTV-era 80s. I've only heard them break format once, when Aretha Franklin died they dipped into the 60s instead of Who's Zoomin Who?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:23pm Sid:

Dream On is about as old as CBS-FM gets. 1976.
Avatar 12:23pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

>>>DIg this crazy stEREO<<<
Avatar 12:23pm Michael Shelley:

weird NY doesnt have a real oldies station
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:24pm Sid:

Anyone older than 54 is not of interest to radio ad buyers, hence Classic Hits are moving solidly into the 80s-90s.
Avatar 12:24pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Aerosmith's 1st album there - 1972-3. We know these things in NewHampshuh...
Avatar #1 Hit Supporter Marathon 2021 12:25pm Hoboken Jack:

WCBS and Michael Shelley Venn diagram overlaps at Frankie Valli
Avatar 12:25pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...@ least the HardRawk station up here stopped playing 90s & calling itself 'ModerRawk'...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:25pm Sid:

Yep. But Dream On was rereleased as a single in 76.
Avatar 12:26pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Ah. No deep cuts...
  12:26pm DG:

WCBS is a joke now....every time I turn it on I hear some synth-heavy 80s track, like Whitesnake or Def Leppard, or disco. You'd think they could throw in a '60s track once in awhile (unless there's a special show devoted to that at another time). Another once--great station ruined by the money & marketing zombies.
Avatar 12:28pm Juke Joint Jonny:

Tennessee Ernie Ford records of this era reach a pop perfection unequaled. Maybe ABBA hits it?

GRAND OLE OPRY program April 30,1993: ibb.co...
Avatar #1 Hit Supporter Marathon 2021 Swag For Life Member 12:45pm G:

Commercial radio isn't about music aesthetics or curation. It's about assembling a certain structure of audience for advertisers. Per ad industry thinking, people 55 and up tend either to have what they want already, or else have strong brand/product loyalties that are tough to change with an ad. So oldies radio format keeps moving forward to go no further than 40 years back, to hit songs that people 55 and under remember being new hits.
Avatar 12:47pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Commercials for itself in other words.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:47pm Tommy in Neversink:

I've heard the Grand Ole Opry doesn't pay performers that much. Because ....well ..they are the Grand Ole Opry
  12:48pm S_Rah:

Avatar 12:50pm Michael Shelley:

S Rah - they've all been guests - luckily
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:50pm Sid:

Takes more $ to convince 55 and older to buy than <55, so advertisers go for younger people since it's cheaper to reach them. Hence, no 60s and little to no 70s songs anymore.
Avatar #1 Hit Supporter Marathon 2021 12:50pm Hoboken Jack:

Love the Apples in Stereo! Was very pleased to hear some new material from Mr. Schneider under the name Air-Sea Dolphin.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:53pm Tommy in Neversink:

Re: radio....I have no problem with commercials , they have to pay the bills ,You're just not going to have 1000 FMUs out there. The problem is the tail wags the dog. It's not DJ driven anymore , no creativity , no risks. Everything is market researched to death.
  12:54pm S_Rah:

@Hoboken jack re oldies radio. I agree. But I miss the one I used to listen to with my dad growing up. Maybe it’s the same station, but they updated the oldies to be 708090:( instead of 60504030s??
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:55pm Tommy in Neversink:

I could write a book about this topic.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:55pm Sid:

That's why we have 88 - 91.9. Still lots going on there in NYC and surrounding environs. Not so much out here in the non-urban world though.
Avatar 12:55pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

It appears to be the same thing in the same thing container it used to be
...I mean - It's always been Show BIZ
...but it ain't. Completely top down - like everything else now: A few own everything. Music is but the canary in the mine...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:56pm Sid:

Nothing will fall on Juniper's head in the improved studio!

Avatar #1 Hit Supporter Marathon 2021 Swag For Life Member 12:58pm G:

@Tommy: I know someone who was on comnetcial radio station focus groups for awhile. She said they'd play 5 to 10 seconds of a song and ask people to vote if they'd want to hear the whole song, or whether they would tend to switch stations and keep looking. It's pretty hardcore.
Avatar #1 Hit Supporter Marathon 2021 Swag For Life Member 12:58pm Hughie Considine:
