Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:14pm fred:

I'll have to leave halfway or so through the show, the downpour outside makes it an even less appealing prospect
Avatar 12:14pm Mayuko:

Good morning chresti! Hi Dropof, Jake, coelacanth∅ and Ike! Glad to have you all here.
Avatar 12:15pm Mayuko:

@Dropof I was JUST thinking, on the day I want to play the sound of rain of course it's very sunny outside.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:16pm Uncle Michael:

Mayuko, I just posted a photo on FB of a red breasted grosbeak on my oriole feeder that I took a few minutes ago.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:17pm chresti:

The first time I went backpacking in Big Sur, we slept in a tree like that.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:17pm coelacanth∅:

over here it's 57f and sunny out. they predict rain coming from the sun though.
Avatar 12:19pm Mayuko:

Hola Uncle Michael! I must check that out!!!!!! I've been meaning to set up my own bird feeder too though I have no backyard.
Avatar 12:19pm Mayuko:

Polyus! Thank you for tuning in!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:20pm chresti:

It was big enough for 4 people (the tree)
Sunny and warm in San Gabriel.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:20pm coelacanth∅:

i never wanted to sleep in a tree like that because i always figured somebody must already live here
(snakes; racoon; tasmanian devil...)
Avatar 12:20pm Mayuko:

@coelacanth∅ haha! and tanuki would steal the offerings!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:22pm coelacanth∅:

ha -but always be forgiven, no?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:24pm chresti:

We checked for animals, it was pretty clean, like someone was there before us.
Avatar 12:24pm Mayuko:

@fred oh so it's properly raining over there? sorry that you can't stay for this show but hope you'll enjoy your weekend plan despite the weather!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:26pm Dave in Vermont:

That tree appears to have an address; is the post delivered thereto?
Avatar 12:26pm Mayuko:

@chresti Sleeping in such huge tree sounds wonderful! Though I seem to be always mosquitos' the first and best favorite food in any group of people, so might be a bit challenging for me.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:26pm Dropof Goldensun:

I've been meaning to look into a bird feeder myself. My new backyard has quite a lot of cool birds. So far I have seen lots of Blue Jays and Cardninals and Robins. The other day I saw some kind of woodpecker with a red Mohawk and I very petite bird with a bright yellow chest! I don't know much about birds but I'm totally digging it.
Avatar 12:27pm Mayuko:

@coelacanth∅ oh yah, tanuki sometimes get away even with murder.
Avatar 12:31pm Mayuko:

@Dave in VT haha, it does have a little tag, so very possibly!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:32pm fred:

I hope it won't be raining too much when I get back. I rarely go out on Saturdays (there's a radio show I want to listen to) but this is a rare show with Thierry and Patrick Müller. Once a decade thing or so, and they like playing live so much it might only last 10 minutes. Can't get there late
Avatar 12:34pm Mayuko:

@Dropof How nice!!!!!!! That very petite bird might be a warbler - many of them we see around here are yellow and/or have a yellow patch on them.
  12:35pm Rickwaukee:

must say, Drumming track was appropriately titled
Avatar 12:36pm JosephB:

@Mayuko please elaborate about the tanuki getting away with murder!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:36pm coelacanth∅:

my sister routinely buys nice, hand-made wooden (usually) bird feeders and hangs them in ways that they get broken by wind or branches etc then i ask shall i fix it? but because i'm also her employee (not technically, or legally because i'm a private contractor) she says no, throw it out because she doesn't think it's worth paying for (again)
i can't throw it out so i fix it on my own time
-but i keep forgetting to take them home.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:36pm Dropof Goldensun:

I've decided to make an effort to watch more in the mornings. Maybe try to get some photos. I have this great big oak tree with vines growing up the side. I saw the wood pecker on it and regret not having a camera or even my phone with me at the time.
  12:38pm Rickwaukee:

oops, seems Words In The Shape Of A Tree was the one I thought was Drumming
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:39pm chresti:

Mayuko, it was cold in April of 1973, not warm enough for skeeters
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:40pm northguineahills:

Just picked an eggplant the size of three of my hands, gotta figure out some recipes...
  12:40pm JakeGould:

I had an idea for a bird feeder come to me this morning. A mourning dove was perched right next to my air conditioner and was constantly squeaking a mating call. I was fine with that.

But then I realized: What about an air-conditioner sized box that is like a Windows terrarium. Not exactly a window box or a bird feeder but a big box you can put in an apartment window that birds will (hopefully)_ find home in? Because a lot of apartment buildings don’t allow bird feeders and such so this could be a sneaky cool thing.
  12:40pm JakeGould:

Like a bigger window box that can hold plants and bird stuff.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:42pm northguineahills:

When I lived in Japan, we had storm shutter boxes which we would only use in tropical storms. However, if we left them open, birds would always nest there, and would drive our dog nuts....
  12:42pm rw:

Hello! Jake, that's genius. I want one.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:43pm coelacanth∅:

Dropof do you know what kind of vines they are? certain vines (like poison ivy, asiatic bittersweet, and wisteria...) will eventually kill a tree, which invites termites, which brings the woodpeckers.
-not that i don't love to see woodpeckers, you understand!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:43pm Dave in Vermont:

oh, meat to tell you that i just re-watched Kurosawa's Dreams and there was that thing about doll day and the peach trees and I thought of when you did that show about doll day
Avatar 12:44pm JosephB:

Hey rw! @Jake I'd love to see that!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:45pm Dave in Vermont:

the dolls in the tree made me recall
  12:45pm rw:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:46pm coelacanth∅:

my mother has a box built into her kitchen window that's a one-way mirror, so she can watch the birds nesting there but they can't see her so they don't get scared away.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:46pm Dropof Goldensun:

coelacanth∅, I think it might be Ivy.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:47pm melinda:

hello group
  12:49pm rw:

I was talking with an artist once who was contemplating a public sculpture he had been commissioned for. One of his ideas was to carve an inconspicuous hole into the side of the hill at the edge of the park and put a small bronze door, as though it was an entrance to a secret world.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:51pm chresti:

Birds like to look at themselves in windows and mirrors, they think it's another bird.
I like that idea, rw.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:51pm melinda:

Cool photo!
  12:51pm rw:

I don't think he ever did it but I always liked the idea. (Which in and of itself is a kind of entrance into a secret world).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:52pm chresti:

Hi melinda!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:53pm melinda:

I bought a bird feeder years ago and still haven't put it up. The level at which it would be optimal for bird viewing would be too high for me to reach without a special platform or ladder.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:54pm coelacanth∅:

if the vines hold onto the tree by tons of little roots, looks kind of like an endless millipede, it's probably poison ivy. i'd cut it clean through with a saw, close to the ground, if it were my tree. (with disposable gloves, slowly and carefully) that can kill even a giant oak.
if it's another kind of ivy (true ivy) it probably wouldn't kill a big oak.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:54pm coelacanth∅:

...not that you asked for my opinion!
  12:57pm rw:

melinda, use a long pole to hang the feeder.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:57pm Dropof Goldensun:

coelacanth∅, no, it's cool. I appreciate your opinion! I'll see if I can get a picture of it and post it.
  12:58pm Ike:

@rw@12:49, awesome
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:59pm coelacanth∅:

rw i like that little door idea
  1:00pm Rickwaukee:

. . . it's over now, drink your big black cow, and get out of here
  1:00pm Rickwaukee:

that's Steely Dan - don't go
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:01pm coelacanth∅:

-i think even digging a hole that you can't see the end of (make it curved maybe) so someone getting down on the ground and opening the door can't tell where the door actually leads to.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:02pm fred:

And not a Dave! Not a Mayuko either, but it still counts
  1:03pm P-90:

Yay! There hasn’t been enough Minotaurs lately
  1:03pm Rickwaukee:

Matinee is mat-i-NAY but I'm Rick-waw-kee
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:06pm fred:

Matinee might be related to the French word for "morning", even though it's most often used for afternoon shows (don't ask me, I didn't make that particular mess)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:08pm chresti:

I think that sounds right @fred.
  1:09pm rw:

Ike, cc, I don't think he ever made that sculpture but I think of it all the time. Many years ago I was in a gallery and the gallerist showed me a tiny ladder that he had put in the rafters in her skylight. Sort of the same idea.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:12pm melinda:

@rw good idea. I have a grabber thing that might work too.
  1:13pm Alessandro from Italy:

Aloa Mayuko... a curiosity. You never played anything of my favourite Master of the masters K.Stockhausen. Can i ask you love or hate him ?

  1:13pm Ike:

@rw, tiny ladders — also awesome
Avatar 1:13pm Mayuko:

@Joe B en.wikipedia.org... Usually Tanuki does get killed as revenge so not always gets away with it, but I seem to remember some versions in which tanuki apologies and gets forgiven at the end.
Avatar 1:15pm Linda Lee:

hello Mayuko! so glad to find you & this beautiful music on a sunny spring day!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:16pm Dropof Goldensun:

coelacanth∅, I was able to find a photo on my phone that shows the lower part of the tree with vine. I just uploaded to my profile here if you want to take a look at it. Anyone can take a look for that matter. Didn't mean to exclude anyone! haha
Avatar 1:17pm Mayuko:

@Jake Maybe that's what I should try!!!!!!!!!!! I was thinking of getting an ordinary bird feeder on my window.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:17pm Dropof Goldensun:

Hey there Linda Lee!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:17pm northguineahills:

@Mayuko: Have you ever seen a tanuki in the wild? I saw one on our base during mating season (me and my friends stumbled upon it exploring the woods). Not friendly, would not encounter again (we ran like scared little wimps, lots of ferocity packed into a small creature)>
Avatar 1:17pm Mayuko:

Hola rw!!!!!!!!1!!!!!!!!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:17pm coelacanth∅:

a few years ago i bought an "antique xylophone" via ebay. it was in an old box with old newspapers and a crinkly vintage dress and some other fabric and some parts of old stuff, just thrown in the box with it. one thing was what i figure must be the door to an old doll house. i glued it to the wall on a shelf but no one who came over ever noticed it.
i still have it, just floating around the kitchen.
  1:18pm Ike:

@fred@1:06, interesting. The matinee price is now only in the mornings in many cinemas in the US though it used to be all shows before 4 or 6 p.m. (cheapskate cinema chains, grrrr) so oddly the word is almost “returning” to mornings.
Avatar 1:19pm Mayuko:

@Dave in VT ha! Thank you for remembering that episode! Dolls are never just cute stuff for children but creepy dreamy stuff...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:19pm northguineahills:

@coel: I found a 1920s xylophone at a Mexican junk store in Monterrey. Since, I had to play it, w/in 4 years, I played to literal pieces. (should have know better, it was a beauty)>
  1:21pm rw:

Avatar 1:21pm Mayuko:

@coelacanth∅ I was JUST wondering "but how I can see birds coming to my box?" A one-way mirror is a great solution!!!!!!
Avatar 1:21pm Mayuko:

Welcome, melinda!!
Avatar 1:24pm Mayuko:

@rw I love that idea of the door, your friend definitely should do it!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:24pm coelacanth∅:

Dropof that big, hairy vine on the left looks like poison ivy, as does the one on the right, if they're the same (it's hard to tell...maybe a closer shot forthcoming?!) the thin vines in the middle are probably english ivy, which i (personally) would let live.
your yard looks beautiful!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:24pm melinda:

Dropof I like your avatar.
Avatar 1:25pm Mayuko:

How come you are not RickwauKAY?! English language is out of control!!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:25pm fred:

I still haven't got to learning Japanese, but I often amaze French people (not a high bar) when I tell Japanese from Chinese because of "no" の which is common in Japanese but not in Chinese
Avatar 1:25pm Mayuko:

@fred French language is out of control too!!
  1:26pm rw:

Ike, the artist is Michael C. McMillan. He's had a good degree of success/critical acclaim but I think he deserves more. I shot the photo (but the original doesn't crop the sign!) used in this article: http://museumca.org/exhibit/michael-c-mcmillen-train-thought The sign at the top was from the set of Blade Runner.
Avatar 1:27pm JosephB:

@rw that's exactly who I thought it might be!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:27pm Dropof Goldensun:

Thank you Melinda!
  1:27pm rw:

Joe, he deserves more critical acclaim, right??
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:28pm melinda:

The photo makes me want to set up little things in my yard. I have a collection of old dish fragments I collected at a local beach which I use to decorate my garden but it has its limitations. I need more items.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:29pm northguineahills:

@fred: If you think Japanese is hard, try classical Japanese (usually traditionally used by proclamations of the imperial family).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:30pm coelacanth∅:

ngh that's too bad it's no longer around. this thing i bought was probably bogus! but it was 10 bucks, and kind of cool. not technically a xylophone (made of glass) and probably not an antique.
Avatar 1:30pm Linda Lee:

melinda, do you mean you need more dish fragments? i'm about to dispose of some vintage dishes .. & some other odd things. come on up & see me sometime!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:30pm fred:

Gotta go, I'll catch the rest on the archive
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:30pm melinda:

@fred are you talking about the spoken language? I can differentiate too, I think it requires an interest in languages (which I have) rather than being good at learning languages (which I'm not, though I wish I was).
Avatar 1:31pm Linda Lee:

btw, i wouldn't use a mirror anywhere near our birds. they might attack it & hurt themselves.
  1:31pm rw:

Later fred! Have a good one!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:32pm Dropof Goldensun:

coelacanth∅, I'm going to take more photos of it that I will post next week. That photo was cropped out of a larger one so it hard to see much. Thanks for the compliment on the yard! I'm loving it because I've never had anything like it before.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:32pm coelacanth∅:

melinda i'm imagining you creating some beautiful mosaic in your garden
Avatar 1:33pm Mayuko:

@Alessandro Really?!?! I'm pretty sure I've played his stuff before... though I've probably played Stock, Hausen & Walkman much more often!
Avatar 1:33pm JosephB:

@rw I agree, but also must admit that I know very little about his work... I have seen his public work "Backlot" but that's about it
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:33pm coelacanth∅:

Avatar 1:34pm Mayuko:

Thank you for tuning in & kind words, Linda Lee!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:35pm Ken From Hyde Park:

Hello, Mayuko and listenerds.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:37pm melinda:

@Linda haha, no! If I could drive distances I would visit though. I'm always interested in odd knicknacks and scrap that could be used to decorate outside, but I'm also trying to get rid of stuff. The dish fragments are cool because some have been tumbled and edges smoothed like beach glass. And I wonder why they ended up in the water. The shore where they appear is right below what was once the Mariners' Hospital, and nearby is an island the was once the home of the state school for the deaf, so those are possible sources.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:38pm coelacanth∅:

Linda i'd be concerned about that too -having seen a cardinal attack his own reflection on a stainless steel trash can all day every day, from spring to autumn, for a few years; but my mother has never had a that happen, and she's had that window bird house thing for a few decades now.
Avatar 1:38pm Mayuko:

@fred@1:25 Ha, that's funny re の!の was somehow really trending in Hong Kong when I visited there - saw it on many store signs!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:38pm melinda:

@coel thanks. I use them to make borders.

Mayuko, I've been looking at McMillan stuff on the internet just now but I think it's much better in person. Maybe that's one of the reasons for his lack of appropriate acclaim.
Avatar 1:48pm Linda Lee:

that was amazing.
