Hey everyone. I’m ready to listen to some covers.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:04pm Funky16Corners:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:07pm Matt from New Orleans:

I like this song but am troubled by its name. At least mel’s cover is a tasty instrumental.
Avatar 10:07pm coelacanth∅:

true, that title's bullshit
Avatar 10:08pm northguineahills:

@Matt: You take that back! :p
Avatar 10:08pm Franco Twinkie:

Larry et all, howdy!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:08pm fleep:

Greetings to Larry and the faithful
Avatar 10:08pm northguineahills:

(faved the track).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:08pm Funky16Corners:

Well, itr was 50 years ago. Hopefully we've grown as a nation (who the hell am I kidding...)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:08pm Funky16Corners:

Franco! NGH! Fleep!
Avatar 10:09pm Erica:

It's an politically incorrect title but the cover is catchy. Life wasn't so PC back then Matt.
Avatar 10:09pm coelacanth∅:

Larry @10.08 Hahahaha!
(...e hem)
Avatar 10:09pm northguineahills:

if anything, the idiom should infer the opposite (euro-Americans, that is).
Avatar 10:12pm coelacanth∅:

the phrase "indian giver" is like bush's "patriot act" and 3/4 of everything else he did that he gave sales-pitch titles to.
same as hitler and them -just call it the oposit and people will assume they're missing something and buy it.
Avatar 10:14pm northguineahills:

what coel said (and anything conservatives label their political lobbying bodies) Ok, done w/ politics....
Avatar 10:14pm coelacanth∅:

let's talk about tubers
Avatar 10:15pm coelacanth∅:

uh, no...let's EAT tubers
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:15pm Matt from New Orleans:

I might have been thinking of that chuck Bernard song of the same title.
Avatar 10:16pm Erica:

Let's eat, TUBERS. Punctuation. It saves lives. Haha!
Avatar 10:16pm Franco Twinkie:

So Coel, a question from the science desk - Does cheese neutralize the toxins that occur naturally in potatoes?
Avatar 10:17pm coelacanth∅:

hmmm. Franco, i can't find my thinking cap.
Avatar 10:18pm still b/p:

I just ate my potato without cheese. How long have I got?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:19pm chresti:

Haha sb/p!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:19pm Matt from New Orleans:

Did you eat the skin?
Avatar 10:19pm coelacanth∅:

but, supposedly the root of the potato doesn't have a significant amount of solanine.
...if you're allergic to something it's usually the protein in that food that body won't tolerate, so nothing's going to neutralize that.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:19pm Funky16Corners:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:20pm Matt from New Orleans:

You’d need to eat 4.5 pounds of potatoes in one sitting to have mild neurological effects
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:21pm Funky16Corners:

When I was a child I was somehow convinced that potato skins had glass in them. I have no idea why.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:21pm Matt from New Orleans:

With the skins I have to add
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:21pm chresti:

Hey geez!
Avatar 10:21pm coelacanth∅:

i love potatoes, and my reaction to them is not immediately (or blatantly) life-threatening, so i eat them occasionally. if i bake one, i always eat the skin, because i love it that way.
Avatar 10:21pm Erica:

I was told that potatoes had eyes.
Avatar 10:22pm Franco Twinkie:

My potato infusion happened right when the show started, so let's treat this like a control study and see what happens in two hours.
Avatar 10:22pm northguineahills:

tuber infusion commencing!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:23pm Matt from New Orleans:

I like this cover of grazing
Avatar 10:23pm Erica:

Turns out the eyes are just another word for sprouting potatoes.
Avatar 10:23pm still b/p:

Oh, I ate me some skin.
The right fries -- the really good 'uns -- might get me close to the four and a half pound mark.
Avatar 10:23pm northguineahills:

lo siento if I pass out due to food coma...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:23pm Funky16Corners:

If anyone wants to bring me 4.5 pounds of french fries I'm cool with that.
Avatar 10:23pm coelacanth∅:

the eyes are just the sprouts. if the potato is sprouting you absolutely should not eat the sprouts, because of solanine, and probably shouldn't eat the potato at all, because of aflatoxins.
Avatar 10:24pm coelacanth∅:

yes, good grazing!
Avatar 10:24pm northguineahills:

@coel: I eat potatoes all the time w/ eyes, I just cut them out...
Avatar 10:25pm Erica:

In other words, throw the potato out.
Avatar 10:26pm still b/p:

Finally tried these recently at a local place -- ohhhhhhhh; read the poetry of the actual menu entry::

Upon request, complimentary Heinz ketchup & malt vinegar

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:27pm Matt from New Orleans:

I prefer goose fat myself but I’m sure they’re adequate
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:27pm Funky16Corners:

Avatar 10:27pm coelacanth∅:

ngh it's okay, if you cut them off; but it means it's older, so check for spots that look a little like mold (black or white) or rot spots, and if there's that, don't cut that off -just throw it away. (or compost it)
Avatar 10:28pm Jeff Ash:

Bucks win! Multitasking tonight.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:28pm Funky16Corners:

Yay Bucks!
Avatar 10:28pm coelacanth∅:

sorry -not interested! but i'd like some truffle ketchup and thai chili mayo
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:29pm chresti:

Avatar 10:29pm coelacanth∅:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:30pm Funky16Corners:

Listen, as an Irishman, I must insist that this character assassination of the noble spud cease immediately.
Avatar 10:30pm Franco Twinkie:

Okay, I think this a pretty good swipe, but I still think Ann Peebles is tops.
Avatar 10:30pm coelacanth∅:

Thanks chresti! sometimes i assume people think i'm making this shit up!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:31pm chresti:

Horseradish and truffles please.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:31pm Funky16Corners:

@Franco - I agree, but i love Lowell/Little Feat
Avatar 10:32pm Jeff Ash:

I have the Mar-Keys' original on my workout playlist, and it came up tonight!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:32pm Funky16Corners:

Avatar 10:32pm Erica:

Love the Mar-Key's original. Perfect go-go dancing music.
Avatar 10:33pm coelacanth∅:

Larry, as an irish person (well i'm just under 1/2 irish; but more irish than anything else) i have to tell you that irish people are possibly the most likely to be sensitive to potatoes...as it was forced upon our ancestors as the primary food for so long.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:33pm Funky16Corners:

I love Georgie's Hammond on this one (and Mitch Mitchell on drums!)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:34pm chresti:

I know @coel- Franco never believes me...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:34pm Funky16Corners:

@C - I am mostly Irish with helpings of Swedish and Hungarian. They must be protecting me from the potatoes.
Avatar 10:37pm northguineahills:

oh, I cut out any green or colored parts of the tater, but I leave the skins on after a good scrubbing.

If we only had an Latvian-Irish person to speak on the subject! :p

food coma ensuing, thanks Larry!
Avatar 10:37pm Franco Twinkie:

By the way Larry, last weeks show is the first time I've ever listened to anything on the archive. You should be glad I was out of town, because I would have exasperated everyone with my opinions, musings and general Know-it-allism on Laural Canyon and it's former residents.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:38pm Funky16Corners:

You were missed Franco!
Avatar 10:39pm coelacanth∅:

haha! my german-ness might protect me a bit. the only nightshade that i need to avoid completely is eggplant.
i even smoke a cigarette now and then.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:39pm Matt from New Orleans:

I think I like the rob base’s sample of it better than lyn Collins’ original
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:40pm Funky16Corners:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:41pm chresti:

I'm more Scotch than Irish
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:41pm Matt from New Orleans:

Not sure actually but figured you’d react to my assertion
Avatar 10:42pm Erica:

I'm a bit Irish but more Italian and born American haha.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:42pm Funky16Corners:

@Matt - I used to pack the Rob Base 45 and play it back to back with the Lyn Collins in funk sets
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:44pm Matt from New Orleans:

I just put you on pause to go watch a little of the video on YouTube and I forgot how good it was
Avatar 10:46pm Franco Twinkie:

I saw a poster on a phone pole in Pico Revera for El Chicano, Tierra, and KC and the Sunshine Band playing somewhere on Memorial day weekend.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:46pm Funky16Corners:

I'd go see that!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:46pm Matt from New Orleans:

Sounds like a fun show Franco
Avatar 10:47pm Franco Twinkie:

Funny thing was, there was no venue, just a web address.
Avatar 10:50pm coelacanth∅:

not welcome to non-googly riffraff
Avatar 10:51pm still b/p:

Watch out that big multi-act show don't collapse, like the Woodstock plan for this summer.
Avatar 10:51pm Erica:

non-googly riffraff?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:52pm Funky16Corners:

Surely the Low Rider world has access to the WWW these days?
Avatar 10:52pm Franco Twinkie:

Or they were having an Altamont moment, and still gluing it together.
Avatar 10:54pm still b/p:

What smartphone brand do the Angels prefer?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:55pm Funky16Corners:

They carry selfi sticks instead of pool cues these days
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:55pm Matt from New Orleans:

Good Night everyone. Have to take a test tomorrow afternoon so I’m going to be responsible and try to get a good nights sleep. I’ll catch the rest of the show on tunein. Thanks Larry.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:56pm Funky16Corners:

Nite Matt! Good luck on the test!
Avatar 10:56pm coelacanth∅:

"selfi sticks"? i'll have to google that.
Avatar 10:57pm coelacanth∅:

g'night Matt. -and what Larry said
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:58pm Funky16Corners:

Should have read "selfie sticks". The insane hardware people use to suspend their cell phones so they can take pictures of themselves
Avatar 10:58pm still b/p:

That's funny...though the images and actions summoned in the imagination are too brutal to even suggest for some sort of YouTubey parody bit.
Avatar 10:59pm Erica:

Night Matt!
Avatar 10:59pm coelacanth∅:

oh...i realised before i *duck duck go'd* it. those sticks so all the self-absorbed people can take pictures of themselves every time they... share their location
Avatar 11:00pm Franco Twinkie:

This sound like an Ed Sanders mellow side of the Fugs kinda thing.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:01pm chresti:

Haha Hell's Angels with selfie sticks
Avatar 11:01pm geezerette:

Larry, enjoying very much while working. Gonna say goodnight now,but listening till end.
Avatar 11:01pm coelacanth∅:

okay i like this already
Avatar 11:01pm Erica:

I have a selfie stick but don't really use it. I find it pointless and too much for me to hold when taking pictures for my FB profile.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:01pm Funky16Corners:

It was about as mellow as the Fugs ever got.
Avatar 11:02pm Jeff Ash:

Bettye LaVette has made a nice career of doing covers.
Avatar 11:02pm Franco Twinkie:

Nighty Night, G.
Avatar 11:02pm coelacanth∅:

'night g
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:03pm Funky16Corners:

@Jeff - Yeah, recently, too
Avatar 11:03pm still b/p:

When the sticks were first sold, I thought that's a silly reach(!) for a product niche and didn't expect it would be a thing. Wellll....
Avatar 11:03pm Franco Twinkie:

This is so wine bar at the beach.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:04pm Funky16Corners:

Nite Geezerette!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:04pm chresti:

Franco got this little tripod with magnets so he can mount a camera on the hood of his truck and film himself while he's driving
Avatar 11:04pm Erica:

G'Night to you Geez!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:05pm chresti:

Goodnight Geeze!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:05pm Funky16Corners:

@Chresti - To what end, may I ask?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:06pm chresti:

..if he wanted to film himself behind the wheel, that is.
Avatar 11:07pm coelacanth∅:

still b/p you underestimated the power of media brainwashing
(...or overestimated your fellow human's sense of reality)
Avatar 11:08pm Franco Twinkie:

Okay, I wasn't going to answer that , but I must clarify: It's part of a flying rig I am building to film flying stuffed animals.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:08pm Funky16Corners:

Yeah, of anything the current state of affairs has taught me, is that all bets are off as far as humanity goes.
Avatar 11:09pm coelacanth∅:

chresti hahaha! i want to see one of those recordings
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:09pm Funky16Corners:

@Franco - That clarifies NOTHING. :)
Avatar 11:10pm coelacanth∅:

Hahaha! Larry's right, Franco!
Avatar 11:10pm Franco Twinkie:

Trust me. It'll work.
Avatar 11:10pm Erica:

Kool and the Gang, back before they were a popular funk/R&B band.
Avatar 11:10pm still b/p:

Clear? No....but you had me at "flying stuffed animals."
Avatar 11:11pm coelacanth∅:

this lineman is decent
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:11pm Funky16Corners:

@Erica - This was during their heavy funk 45 period. Just taking the opportunity to show off their chops
Avatar 11:11pm coelacanth∅:

when is all this getting posted on ... what do you kids post videos to now?
Avatar 11:12pm Erica:

At least this was WHEN they showed off their chops haha.
Avatar 11:12pm still b/p:

The stuffed animals will fly as they're pitched to us and we'll hit line-drives and bloopers with our SELFIE STICKS!
Avatar 11:13pm Erica:

Haha still p/b.
Avatar 11:13pm coelacanth∅:

the album title belies them doing a cover of wichita lineman
  11:14pm rw:

Howdy. These covers are interesting and unusual!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:14pm Funky16Corners:

Hey rw!
Avatar 11:15pm coelacanth∅:

hey rw!
Avatar 11:15pm coelacanth∅:

never heard the original, but i like Sam's version
  11:16pm rw:

Avatar 11:18pm coelacanth∅:

well Larry, you did once tell me you'd change my mind about Little Richard (my assertion that he only did about 15 songs that were good, or some such ridiculousness)
Avatar 11:21pm Franco Twinkie:

Before. And the picture of Lowell at the beach with a big glob of seaweed on the inner sleeve is worth the price of the record.
Avatar 11:22pm Erica:

I need to check out the Fugs version soon.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:26pm Funky16Corners:

@C - Some night I'll do a whole Little Richard show to illustrate just how broad his discography was
Avatar 11:26pm Erica:

Groovy cover!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:26pm Funky16Corners:

@Erica - Those early Fugs albums are cool
  11:26pm rw:

Morning Morning is a great song. I missed the cover version but how could you go wrong?
Avatar 11:27pm still b/p:

Now THIS is an unexpected track. I missed intro if you gave it one. Only ever heard the Goldsboro,
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:28pm Funky16Corners:

@SBP - One of my fave songs. I love the Goen Campbell and the recording by the guy that wrote it, Sonny Curtis
  11:29pm rw:

You guys can't hear me whistling along with this can you?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:30pm chresti:

What's your name? Who's your daddy?
Avatar 11:30pm Franco Twinkie:

A friend of mine saw Sam The Sham playing a free show in front of the city hall in Pasadena. Apparently he had become born again and no one wanted to hear his christian songs, and some guy in a gorilla suit started jumping around in back of him when he started talking about Jesus.
Avatar 11:31pm Erica:

It's the time, of the season for loviiing!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:32pm Funky16Corners:

@Franco - yeah, Sam has gone all the way over to Jesus.

coel, how could you know if I was off key? You were in the kitchen!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:37pm Funky16Corners:

@Jeff - It has a few cool tracks, including a Paul Williams song that doesn't appear anywhere else
Avatar 11:38pm still b/p:

This -- FF doing Sly -- ALSO unexpected and unlikely and soooo strangely fun.
Avatar 11:38pm Erica:

And yet I hear another version of Everyday People.
Avatar 11:39pm Franco Twinkie:

Still b/p was that an overly long album title from the 60's? Kind of like Maybe The People Would Be The Times Or Between Clark And Hilldale?
Avatar 11:39pm coelacanth∅:

this version ought to open up the minds of white folk
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:39pm Funky16Corners:

@SBP - Those late 60s FF albums have some really interesting stuff on them
  11:40pm rw:

The Four Freshmen were definitely white ones.

Avatar 11:42pm coelacanth∅:

did fairport convention do this song?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:44pm Funky16Corners:

@C - I don't think so. Written by Joni Mitchell, covered by Tom Rush among others
  11:44pm rw:

Interesting and unusual! Dion. Crazy.
Avatar 11:44pm Franco Twinkie:

This takes the cake.
Avatar 11:44pm Erica:

Avatar 11:47pm Franco Twinkie:

A Laurel Canyon desciple for sure.
Avatar 11:48pm coelacanth∅:

my initial reaction the Dion's cover was that i actually laughed out loud. but it is an interesting arrangement, even if more than a tad disgenuine, as Dion often was. (in my opinion)
Avatar 11:49pm coelacanth∅:

wow so many covers of this and i never heard this one, which i do like.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:50pm Funky16Corners:

I like that Dion album a lot. If you ever get the chance check out the stuff that Gilberto Gil was doing in 1969/1971. It sounds like he had Dion's Purple Haze on a loop.

Thanks Larry! Goodnight everyone!

Have to confess I've been listening to Genesis outtakes this evening. The post-Gabriel stuff is more impressive than I would have imagined.

Well this has been an interesting show, over too soon as usual.
Avatar 11:56pm Franco Twinkie:

Dean, Chester Thomson was in Genesis? How long?
Avatar 11:57pm coelacanth∅:

Franco do you have a potato-poisoning first-aid kit in the house?
  11:57pm Dean:

One tour? Two? I saw them with Thompson and Bruford. Only time I ever heard the master live.
Avatar 11:58pm coelacanth∅:

(if not, some yellow haze blotter acid should counter your reaction)
Avatar 11:58pm Franco Twinkie:

Chester was something.
