Options May 8, 2019: VIVIEN GOLDMAN interview about her new book Revenge Of The She-Punks: A Feminist Music History from Poly Styrene to Pussy Riot

Listen to this show:  Pop‑up player!

Author/Musician/Educator Vivien Goldman, sometimes known as "The Punk Professor," joins Evan "Funk" Davies to discuss her new book Revenge Of The She-Punks (University Of Texas Press). The book, subtitled "A Feminist Music History from Poly Styrene to Pussy Riot," covers female punk musicians around the world from the mid-1970s through the present day — a subject she is acquainted with personally thanks in part to her classic 1981 tune "Launderette." Goldman will be appearing at McNally-Jackson bookstore on Prince St. this coming Sunday, May 12, at 3pm.

Listener comments!

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:04pm Bootsie:

Off to an excellent start!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:05pm ultradamno:

I once saw the Boston band Wild Stares with a bit of the flu. One of them asked what bands I liked. I mention X-Ray Spex. They mocked me. "I had a crush on Poly Styrene in high school, too but come on". I coughed on him.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:07pm Kat in Chicago:

Good move, ultradamno. I am excited for this show!
  9:08pm seedfriend:

Glad to be listening, such rare.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:15pm Phillippe Bastille:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:17pm efd:

hi everyone, happy to have you listening tonight!
Avatar 9:26pm JIMD2019:

hi EFD this song rules. its helping me deal with phone companies. for a tele communications company they sure are hard to get in touch with GRRRRRR
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:30pm DouglasInDallas:

We were just talking today how noticeably absent Grace Jones was at the Met Gaia this year...
  9:31pm Nick:

Did the au pairs collaborate with The Gang Four on "it's obvious"?
Sounds kind of obvious, and it was recorded around the right time.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:33pm Threemoons:

Loving this set...perfect for getting over a shingles shot and packing for a trip to Mom's...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:38pm @sugarwolf@:

I used to see Patti Smith eat at Souen on Prince Street which just closed down a few months ago I also saw her perform at a lot of other places downtown
Avatar 9:43pm herb.nyc:

Jenn Pelly graduated from nyu, I think. You know that place, Evan?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:56pm Phillippe Bastille:

Great interview! I'll have to catch the rest on the archives. Good night all
  9:58pm Grubbus:

same thing happening with Little Nas X and country music...exclusion/territorial attitude.
Avatar 9:59pm herb.nyc:

Chris Stamey's "a spy in the house of loud" is on university of Texas press too. w soundtrack as well. / exclusionary, sez Evan. A clerk at Free Being made fun of me when I brought up Toy Dolls, looooong time ago. / punk is simple, sez Vivien. The Met "camp" show sure was a turnoff, for me.
  10:03pm megadodo:

Does Viv have any current recommendations?
  10:06pm jeanli:

Yeah what is VIV listening to right now???
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:06pm @sugarwolf@:

@herb.nyc: I think last year's Met Gala was more camp than this one!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:07pm Kat in Chicago:

Delightful! I have to get hold of that book.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:08pm efd:

ahhh sorry guys, I didn't get a chance to ask what she's listening to. go to one of her events and ask if you're in the area! :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:09pm chris_in_space:

Great interview as usual @efd. "Revenge" is going on my summer reading list, like so many other great books you turned me on to.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:10pm Kat in Chicago:

I was actually supposed to be in town on the 24th, but because I work for/with jerks was denied the time off. Dammit.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:13pm efd:

oh boo!! That sucks, Kat!
  10:13pm Dave Miss:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:14pm Kat in Chicago:

Avatar 10:37pm herb.nyc:

  10:37pm Eli J Neman:
