EDIT/UPDATE: photo above of the late Walter Miles was taken by Oakland photographer Ken Rice............Today's show is dedicated to the memory and legacy of both Walter Davis Miles (Tennessee/Oakland) and of Frank O'Toole (WFMU veteran) - two good people who recently passed on and will be missed but whose legacies will live on. Frank O'Toole was among the first folk I met when I joined WFMU and always looked out for me as well as others. Among many people and things he made me aware of incudied his initially introducing me to the mashup party pioneers at Bootie SF (and interviewing them before going on to become a regular DJ at their club) and been instrumental in me securing a WFMU interview with the famously elusive Andy Partridge of XTC (Frank was a huge fan of theirs) back in Jan 12 2007 (see archives). Meanwhile Tennessee born Walter Davis Miles was my Oakland neighbor and friend for many years - an always kind, selfless, generous person who taught me, through his example, the power of giving back to your community. As reiterated at his funeral service last Sunday in Oakland, Mr Miles was a tireless community activist whose numerous volunteer tasks he undertook for his Oakland CA neighborhood included planting trees on streets where no trees had ever been. The opening sample in today's show about about the power of community in the act of an older person planting a tree that he knows he will not live long enough to sit in the shade of (care of the 2019 Netflix Ricky Gervais series "After Life") is something I coincidentally stumbled upon earlier this week and felt like it summed up the spirit and legacy of the late Mr Miles so had to include it. Rest in peace to these two individuals who, through their actions in life, will live on forever. - Today's show is coming from the Left Coast - thanks to Bronwyn B back in the WFMU NJ studios for handling the engineering of this week's radio show and thanks to you for listening.
