Avatar 6:03pm cometothesunshine:

where's the music?
Avatar 6:03pm mce1965:

It's felt and heard
  6:08pm uptownjen:

Yes! Sounds fantastic. Congratulations, Andrew. You’ve spread so much joy over those 150 episodes. I’m so very glad you’re in our world.
Avatar 6:09pm cometothesunshine:

Thank you, Jen!!!
Avatar 6:10pm cometothesunshine:

BTW, the music beds are all Lenny Waronker productions.
Avatar 6:13pm cometothesunshine:

This discussion was one of the highlights of my musical career.
Avatar 6:16pm cometothesunshine:

You can hear, even on this record, Lenny's touch with the keyboard sound - similar to Mojo Men records, but in a much different setting.
  6:19pm rwa:

Hello
Avatar 6:19pm cometothesunshine:

welcome rwa
Avatar 6:20pm cometothesunshine:

This is a crazy record - listen to the electric piano, mandolin and dobro.
  6:21pm rwa:

Mojo men were rad!
Avatar 6:22pm mce1965:

It's my fave Lenny production of many fave Lenny productions. I never tire of it.
Avatar 6:23pm cometothesunshine:

I love Lenny's attitude - you can tell he was kinda scared by all of these things, but took the thrill ride anyway, believing he would learn something.
Avatar 6:24pm mce1965:

Exactly. And he was with the perfect label to do this... it wouldn't have happened anywhere else.
Avatar 6:25pm cometothesunshine:

This really is a remarkable version and vision for the future.
Avatar 6:29pm KarenS:

Hi Kids
Avatar 6:29pm cometothesunshine:

welcome Karen!
Avatar 6:31pm KarenS:

Hi Andrew, Happy 150th!!
Avatar 6:32pm cometothesunshine:

Thank you! I never knew it would last this long!
  6:32pm uptownjen:

I love hearing these songs in chronological order and in context. Really digging the show so far.
Avatar 6:34pm cometothesunshine:

This is a beautiful record
Avatar 6:35pm cometothesunshine:

Never been reissued
Avatar 6:35pm mce1965:

This is great!
Avatar 6:36pm mce1965:

Every bit as good as the original. What a great arrangement.
Avatar 6:37pm cometothesunshine:

Nick DeCaro - and brilliant work from Lenny
Avatar 6:37pm cometothesunshine:

Sounds like an outtake from Triangle
Avatar 6:37pm mce1965:

Exactly
Avatar 6:40pm mce1965:

Another absolutely mindbendingly brilliant record
Avatar 6:40pm cometothesunshine:

This record is one of those that makes my mind and heart explode.
Avatar 6:41pm mce1965:

Indeed. So much to love and discover in each new listening.
Avatar 6:41pm cometothesunshine:

The mix is pretty damn great for everything he had to balance
Avatar 6:41pm cometothesunshine:

Too bad it never got played on the radio
Avatar 6:42pm mce1965:

Yeah... "hey do you have that record 'She's Coming'"?
Avatar 6:43pm mce1965:

I played that in my record store when the Best Of was issued and some woman got really upset with me
Avatar 6:43pm cometothesunshine:

#radiofriendly
Avatar 6:45pm mce1965:

You can tell he's really into this... very cool.
Avatar 6:45pm cometothesunshine:

#sinatrahatedit
Avatar 6:46pm mce1965:

yes
Avatar 6:46pm cometothesunshine:

I wish people still made credibility records.
Avatar 6:47pm Olivia Greene:

What an enjoyable and fascinating show this is. Thank you!
Avatar 6:47pm cometothesunshine:

Thanks, Olivia!
Avatar 6:48pm cometothesunshine:

You all know that sharing this music and history with you is a great joy for me.
  6:49pm DJ Pat K:

Amazing interview Andrew, congrats on 150!
Avatar 6:50pm mce1965:

It's obvious how much effort and love you put into this
Avatar 6:50pm cometothesunshine:

Thanks so much, DJ Pat!!
Avatar 6:52pm cometothesunshine:

You can hear that I had lost my voice the day the interview was done. But nothing was going to stop me. Lenny was super busy with calls and other things. I sat in the lobby at Warners for a long time. I was so happy when we finally sat down and we actually listened to all of these records together.
Avatar 6:53pm mce1965:

It's so great he allowed the time and effort to do that with you. The results are truly wonderful
Avatar 6:54pm cometothesunshine:

He was very self-critical, so I was thrilled that he enjoyed the experience.
Avatar 6:54pm cometothesunshine:

This song is pretty unbelievable.
Avatar 6:54pm mce1965:

Exactly, because you never know how those things are going to go!
Avatar 6:55pm mce1965:

Yes, and hearing that rough mix on Mojo Magic shows how much he brought the final product.
Avatar 6:56pm mce1965:

brought TO
Avatar 6:56pm cometothesunshine:

yes, it is too bad he hated their songs.
Avatar 6:56pm cometothesunshine:

I personally like their songs.
Avatar 6:57pm mce1965:

I love them!!
Avatar 6:58pm mce1965:

Disappointing but ah well
Avatar 6:59pm cometothesunshine:

Let it not go unsaid that Magic Hollow is an extraordinary work of art.
Avatar 7:00pm cometothesunshine:

Van Dyke Parks on the electric harpsichord, damn amazing.
Avatar 7:00pm mce1965:

Yes. In a year redolent with genius, this is right there along with all the other works of wonder
Avatar 7:00pm cometothesunshine:

I love where Lenny places the strings in this mix, always supportive. The voice is always crisp and focussed.
Avatar 7:02pm mce1965:

And the mono and stereos of Triangle are both perfect mixes. One of the few albums of the era where I like both equally.
Avatar 7:03pm cometothesunshine:

I think Are You Happy could have been a hit single.
Avatar 7:04pm mce1965:

I wonder if we'd look at these records any differently if they had become hits.
Avatar 7:05pm TDK60:

Hello, this may be my first trip to this show.
Avatar 7:05pm mce1965:

But, as Brian Wilson himself said in '88... "'Rio Grande' is a number 1 hit... yeah... on MARS!"
Avatar 7:05pm cometothesunshine:

welcome, TDK
Avatar 7:06pm cometothesunshine:

Hits, not hits - these songs are incredibly moving.
Avatar 7:06pm cometothesunshine:

And he has an identifiable sound, but is not recognized for this work.
Avatar 7:06pm mce1965:

Of course.
Avatar 7:08pm KarenS:

I love humble people like LW.
Avatar 7:11pm cometothesunshine:

Lenny did much better work with the Brothers elsewhere, but this was an interesting track that he recalled out of the others.
Avatar 7:12pm cometothesunshine:

And it is unique, because I was the first person to issue his finished mix of the song commercially on a box set that I produced.
Avatar 7:12pm cometothesunshine:

This isn't a far leap from things like Gone Dead Train by Randy Newman.
Avatar 7:12pm mce1965:

I can't believe that was 13 years ago
Avatar 7:14pm cometothesunshine:

This is the original mono mix of The All Golden
Avatar 7:15pm cometothesunshine:

Left on Silver Lake
Avatar 7:16pm TDK60:

Song Cycle is one of those '60s albums I didn't hear back in the '60s; bought it on cassette later, in the '90s.
Avatar 7:16pm cometothesunshine:

I owned it and had trouble getting through it for many years.
Avatar 7:17pm cometothesunshine:

But I respect it and enjoy it in pieces.
Avatar 7:17pm mce1965:

I still do, truth be told. All of his albums. His voice is not something I enjoy listening to. I'd love to hear an instrumental Song Cycle.
Avatar 7:17pm cometothesunshine:

It is like a Fellini film
Avatar 7:18pm Olivia Greene:

Almost SMiLE 2. Mind expanding then and now too.
Avatar 7:19pm TDK60:

I first heard of V.D. Parks from a note on the Fifth Dimension LP by The Byrds. I think he played organ on the title track.
Avatar 7:19pm cometothesunshine:

Yes, he did TDK
  7:20pm dano59:

That EB album is great -- The Price of Love!
Avatar 7:22pm mce1965:

Love love love this record
Avatar 7:22pm cometothesunshine:

I never asked how they randomly placed people on Warner or Reprise.
Avatar 7:23pm cometothesunshine:

A number of these songs have been presented on my show in the past, but I feel this is the best they have sounded in context.
Avatar 7:24pm mce1965:

Agreed. They are of a piece.
Avatar 7:24pm mce1965:

I wish I could stay in the chat room but I must head home. I'll listen in the car... thanks for this tour-de-force Andrew. Brilliant!
Avatar 7:24pm cometothesunshine:

The traffic noises are incredible. You can just imagine this guy lost on the street.
Avatar 7:25pm cometothesunshine:

Thanks, MCE - safe travels.
Avatar 7:31pm cometothesunshine:

My high school was known as Pali High. Lenny and I grew up in the same town and I went to school with one of his daughters.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:34pm Matt Clarke:

Ah got here just in time to catch a bit!
Avatar 7:34pm cometothesunshine:

Welcome, Matt!
Avatar 7:34pm TDK60:

..great show Andrew. I'm just now starting to explore the Ichiban and Sheena streams, been getting acquainted with the Drummer stream for a bit.
Avatar 7:35pm cometothesunshine:

TDK - so glad you checked us out!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:35pm Matt Clarke:

Cool Sal tune! Harkening back to Magic Hollow eh
Avatar 7:36pm cometothesunshine:

Very much so, Matt. We talked about Magic Hollow and Two Days Till Tomorrow. If you get a chance to listen to the first bit, you would dig it.
  7:36pm CC:

Great tunes and background info Andrew... groovy show for sure!!!...:)O(:
Avatar 7:37pm cometothesunshine:

Thanks, CC!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:37pm Matt Clarke:

Definitely going to catch the first part tomorrow on the way to work
Avatar 7:38pm cometothesunshine:

Right on!
Avatar 7:47pm cometothesunshine:

It is strange to reach this milestone of 150 shows. I feel like it was only yesterday that I started this in 2006. But all these years later, Come To The Sunshine is the only constant in my creative life. I love you all for listening. I hope it brings you good feelings and helps you through your days, as it has for me.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:48pm Matt Clarke:

Keep 'em coming Andrew!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:49pm Matt Clarke:

And congratulations on 150 shows
Avatar 7:49pm KarenS:

Keep shining Andrew!!

Thank you, Matt!
Avatar 7:49pm Woof:

Thank you for sharing this wonderful music with us, Andrew!
Avatar 7:49pm Olivia Greene:

So much healing beauty! Plus, the historical knowledge in this playlist chatroom floors me. Much appreciation for the opportunity to listen and learn from y'all. Especially you, Andrew. Happy 150th!
Avatar 7:50pm cometothesunshine:

Thanks all.
  7:51pm CC:

It always seemed peculiar to me that the Beach Boys were looked at more critically with their experimentation than when the Beatles did it???...:)0(:
Avatar 7:52pm cometothesunshine:

CC - the Beach Boys were misunderstood for decades.
  7:55pm uptownjen:

Andrew, thanks for sharing this epic interview with us and for all of your passion and efforts yesterday, today, and always. You’re a national treasure, and that’s no exaggeration.

Congratulations on your 150th!
Avatar 7:56pm cometothesunshine:

I truly appreciate all of your support - take care and enjoy your week!
  7:56pm CC:

Like empty boxes... misunderstood and overlooked...:)0(:
  7:57pm Santos L Halper:

Just happened to be sitting here reading Brian’s autobio...thanks for the interview, will have to hit the archive and catch the parts I missed.
