I play music that is old and that is new. Some of it is digital while some is analog. It is from many different countries; sometimes it is loud and at other times it is quiet.

Sorry to miss your show live, Mayuko.
Memorial service for a friend this afternoon, so will catch you and all in the archives.

Hi my radio family Sem. Sorry to hear about your friend and thanks for leaving the comment here.

Avatar 12:09pm Mayuko:

There are some Saturday working men and women and everyone in between, indeed! Are you one of em, rbrt?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:10pm fred:

On Tuesday I'll see a project called Yellow Magic Harpsichord. It does seem like it's one guy playing YMO covers on harpsichord. I'll probably be disappointed, but how could I miss that show?
  12:11pm rbrt:

no I'm not, although I kind of wouldn't mind it, and have like middle of the week Wed off would be nice
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:12pm Dropof Goldensun:

I'm here working on Saturday lamenting away with my harmonica.
Avatar 12:16pm Mayuko:

@fred You are very brave. But I guess who knows? Maybe you'll LOVE it??
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:16pm david w:

Deal me in! Hello Mayuko and all!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:16pm chresti:

Hi Mayuko and dizzy friends!
  12:17pm rbrt:

this Patrik Svensson illustration reminds me of something banksy-ish
  12:18pm rbrt:

Fred you should tape all the live shows you go to, like that taper guy...you would have a huge archive
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:18pm coelacanth∅:

Greetings Mayuko & Playverts
Avatar 12:19pm Mayuko:

@rbrt except weekend commute is HORRIBLE in NYC with all that MTA trap!
Avatar 12:20pm Mayuko:

@Dropof Haha! Your lab is not a disco today.
Avatar 12:20pm Mayuko:

david w! Welcome!! Good morning chresti! Thanks for tuning in coelacanth∅!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:21pm chresti:

I now have Saturdays off, after a change in my work schedule, Sunday is my Monday. Very happy to be able to visit the comments board.
  12:22pm rbrt:

oh yeah I really didn't think through the whole commuting process lol
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:22pm fred:

@rbrt: No, I prefer to keep it in the moment. Especially for dance, I rarely watch videos of dance shows. But there's a guy who I often see filming shows: vimeo.com...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:23pm Dropof Goldensun:

@Mayuko - Well, that's your fault! haha BTW, the harmonica is only a mental version not to interfere with your selections.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:24pm chresti:

rbrt-yeah, Banksy-ish, more whimsical though
Avatar 12:24pm Mayuko:

@chresti Hooray! Happy to have you on board and listen live!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:26pm fred:

Nice Fulani Musicians track. In keeping with the international side, I have some pretty close-sounding stuff from Southeast Asia
Avatar 12:32pm Mayuko:

@fred That horn sounding thing? I thought of Chinese Suona - hence the segue into Chinese stuff.

Good morning rw! Hi melinda! Thank you for tuning in!!
Avatar 12:38pm Mayuko:

Hello Michael 98145! Glad the weather turned much better today for the fair - though I'm not there either, haha. Independent bookstore day sounds pretty good too!
Avatar 12:38pm JosephB:

Morning rw!
  12:39pm rbrt:

is that Kōhei Amada the sugai ken rework?
  12:40pm rw:

Joe! What's going on, man? Me, I'm sitting here trying to get motivated but having little luck with it.
  12:41pm rbrt:

independent bookstore day sounds nice
Avatar 12:42pm Mayuko:

@rbrt yah, this one is his original recorded in 1970, B side is Sugai Ken.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:43pm fred:

That independent bookstore day talk reminds me I should preorder the new Colson Whitehead. It's only scheduled for July, but my fave bookstore's owner is indeed very independent, so it might take some begging
  12:43pm rbrt:

@mayuko thank you, love that
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:44pm Dropof Goldensun:

The record fair is tomorrow too, right?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:45pm Michael 98145:

Avatar 12:45pm Mayuko:

@Dropof Yup! Tomorrow is the last day.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:48pm fred:

That's nice Shô music there. I love the Cage pieces for it that I've heard too
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:49pm Dropof Goldensun:

@Mayuko - Thanks. I may try to stop by tomorrow if life permits me.
Avatar 12:51pm Mayuko:

@fred Yeah! Sho is one of the earliest drone music in the world! (Maybe!) It deserves all that re-interpretation!!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:52pm chresti:

ECF? @JosephB
Avatar 12:53pm Mayuko:

@Dropof Life sure doesn't permit many things!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:54pm Dropof Goldensun:

Amen to that Sister!

Hey chresti, I had the same question but just looked it up. https://www.ecf.net/ Looks like a cool program.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:55pm Michael 98145:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:00pm Michael 98145:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:01pm chresti:

Thanks rw and JoesephB
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:01pm coelacanth∅:

haha...i have an album called flower drum song i've had it since i was in my 20s, and i never considered that flower drum meant the kind of drum being played! i thought it meant drum music in honour of the flower!
  1:01pm JakeGould:

It’s very breezy in NYC but very nice too. So I recommend everyone go outside and enjoy the breezy spring. In NYC or elsewhere.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:03pm chresti:

I remember the movie with Nancy Kwan, Flower Drum Song
  1:03pm rbrt:

kite club!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:03pm Michael 98145:

@coel'c, me neither. i learn a lot around these parts.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:04pm coelacanth∅:

Michael true true.
i hate when i miss a class!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:05pm Michael 98145:

flying kites and warmed sake sounds like an excellent day
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:05pm chresti:

Enjoying the marine layer overcast this morning, in San Gabriel
Avatar 1:05pm JosephB:

That kite club sounds wonderful!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:06pm coelacanth∅:

i've never flown a kite but i'd join that club
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:07pm Michael 98145:

you always play such great music. thank you, Mayuko ♫
  1:08pm rw:

coel, you've never flown a kite??
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:09pm Michael 98145:

my kite attempts are seldom successful
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:10pm coelacanth∅:

rw yeah -despite how many times i've been told to go fly a kite
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:11pm Michael 98145:

loving this gamelan feel
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:11pm Ken From Hyde Park:

At least the kite didn't get stuck in a tree, Charlie Brown style.
  1:11pm rw:

Oh, and after last week (was it last week?) I had an image pop into my head of coelacanth∅ getting pulled over by the cops, car reeking of weed, and he and his buddies all in there eating carrots and apples as fast as they can.
  1:11pm rbrt:

the best part of flying the kite is getting it to take off
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:12pm fred:

Loro Bronto sounds so familiar. Maybe some earlier version of it was on the great Dust To Digital "Longing for the Past" release
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:12pm chresti:

I remember losing kites.
  1:13pm rw:

I need to start a kite flying club. When I was in grade school on kite flying day the kid who's dad worked for Johnson and Johnson always won the award for highest flying kite. He'd use dental floss for the string.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:13pm Michael 98145:

this track sounds like the record fair :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:14pm coelacanth∅:

rw hahaha! ...and the one fool who thought the potato was the way to go!

I like the hotel bar sounds.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:15pm coelacanth∅:

  1:15pm Rickwaukee:

Completely charmed by Amiek Dasuki
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:16pm Ken From Hyde Park:

When we were kids, Mom sent in a bunch of labels for a Green Giant kite. That thing sailed high into the air. Like a dummy, I tied it to the fence at dusk and we had a broken kite the next morning.
Avatar 1:17pm Mayuko:

@rw Dental floss!?!?!? Because he'd get endless supply from work?! Didn't know that was THAT strong string!
  1:17pm rw:

Poor Charlie Brown.
  1:17pm rbrt:

I can relate to charlie brown lol
  1:18pm rbrt:

this just needs a smug snoopy in the distance flying his kite perfectly
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:19pm Ken From Hyde Park:

@rw - Cool! Mint flavored kite string!
  1:19pm rw:

Mayuko, it's strong and it's light. I think the weight was the key.
  1:20pm rbrt:

the caretaker gets me every time
Avatar 1:20pm Mayuko:

SO many lovely sounding kroncong singers, Rickwaukee!!
Avatar 1:21pm Mayuko:

Hi Ken! Green Giant kite?! What shape was that?
Avatar 1:22pm JosephB:

Can we start a Play Vertigo Kite Flying Club?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:22pm chresti:

Seems like floss might cut the fingers, if the wind is strong..
Avatar 1:23pm Mayuko:

@rbrt The Caretaker turns everything from lovely to uncanny!
  1:24pm rbrt:

Avatar 1:24pm Mayuko:

@Joe B Haha, that should be the listener meetup thing for this show! We all meet in a desert or something.
  1:25pm rw:

Joe, I was thinking the same thing. And speaking of kite flying, my friend Noel had a german made contraption with wings and maybe a spinner that would travel up the kite string. When it got to the top it would hit a clip attached to the string that would make the wings fold down and it would travel back to you. It had a really cool german name that I can't remember.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:25pm melinda:

love the Caretaker. Great moody set.
  1:26pm rbrt:

that is one fancy kite, mine were literally 2 sticks and a light tissue paper
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:28pm Michael 98145:

@rbt, i never flew a fancy kite, either ..
  1:28pm rw:

rbrt, the german thing wasn't a kite it was more like a kite accessory.
  1:29pm rw:

I always liked the box kites. Never flew one though.
Avatar 1:29pm JosephB:

@rw so this device actually zipped up the kite string and came back down? Incredible!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:29pm Ken From Hyde Park:

It was pentagon shaped. I don't remember if we were able to fix it after the crash.
  1:31pm rbrt:

I always wanted a box kite too! prob very hard to get going!
  1:33pm rw:

Joe, yes! Man, I wish I could remember the name of it. We flew it at the beach and put bits of trash in the clip so when it got to the top and the wings folded the clip would release the trash over PCH.
Avatar 1:34pm Mayuko:

Ha, so pentagon shape one flies really well? I've had the best experience with a diamond kite. I love it's classic look, too. Some shapes must require some real skills, I suppose.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:35pm Ken From Hyde Park:

Note for later: design a kite-flying app.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:36pm fred:

I never flew a kite. And I have now idea why it's called "cerf-volant" in French (which would translate to "flying deer")
Avatar 1:37pm Mayuko:

@rw the whole thing sounds very german! Think the simplicity of dental floss is all I can handle.
  1:37pm rw:

I always had the best luck with bat kites.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:38pm Dropof Goldensun:

Sign me up for the kite flying!
  1:38pm rbrt:

flying deer..interesting!
Avatar 1:39pm Mayuko:

@fred Flying deer?!?! Sounds closer to Flying Saucer than a kite!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:40pm Ken From Hyde Park:

Now I'm recalling when the stores would put out kites for sale in the spring time. We'd beg for Mom to buy us one.
  1:44pm rw:

Mayuko, I need to paint the inside of my house and I think I'm going to take some color inspiration from your playlist page.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:44pm Franco Twinkie:

Hey Guys. Did any of you make hot air balloons with cleaner bags?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:45pm fred:

According to Wikipedia, the French name came from a mistranscription of "serp volante", which meant "flying snake", and makes a little more sense
Avatar 1:46pm Mayuko:

@Ken That's a nice memory. I guess flying kite is a good way of celebrating the arrival of spring, going outside to enjoy the weather.
  1:46pm rbrt:

oh flying snake I can see! I forgot about the little tails we used to put on them!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:47pm chresti:

Flying dragons, too
Avatar 1:47pm Mayuko:

@Franco Is that some drug terms?
  1:47pm rw:

Franco, no. Do you use chemicals or fire?
Avatar 1:47pm Mayuko:

@Franco also doesn't sound too safe to me somehow!?
  1:48pm rw:

Ha! Mayuko, I think you've got Franco pegged.
Avatar 1:48pm Mayuko:

Flying dragons makes sense. Since dragons fly too, deers don't.
  1:49pm rbrt:

I feel like you can't even fly a kite anywhere anymore without someone giving you a fine or something?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:53pm chresti:

I think drones are what gets you in trouble

Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:56pm david w:

Wonderful. Thank you!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:56pm Franco Twinkie:

No, It wasn't safe at all. You make a hoop with plastic drinking straws, with an additional X that you set with straight pins to impale birthday candles. You then tape this wheel to the edges of the bag. One person holds up the bag while the other person lights the candles, and wooosh! it takes off. Can you tart trees on fire? Most certainly!
