The core of Big Planet Noise was formed when Bob Irwin was just 5 years old. The day he picked up his first 45, the whole thing set to spinning – and records and music have been pretty much all he’s thought about ever since. Avocation eventually became vocation, leading to Sundazed Music and Modern Harmonic, all drawing inspiration from Bob’s legendary collection. But, what good is having so many records if no-one else can hear them with you?

Big Planet Noise is Bob’s way of inviting everyone over to hang out in the music room while he and co-host Gina Bacon flip through the stacks and play great records. And – the BPN chat room is where the action is… they yak about what’s on the turntable, tell stories, backstories, and share what was had for dinner, friends ’n family style. Gina keeps the celestial orbit steady-as-it-goes; making sure the stylus stays in the groove, the stacks don’t teeter and the drinks don’t spill all over the console. NB: Gina can also be heard on Saturday afternoons as the host of Someday Matinee (also on WFMU's Give The Drummer Radio stream), a show filled with live musical performances and artist interviews, direct from Music City.

There’s a reason it’s called Big Planet Noise… the show covers a lot of musical ground; familiar, forgotten, unheralded, unheard… The sonic menu is ever-changing; you’ll hear oddball teens, psychedelic wizards, mod lads, sitar savants, space-cadets, groovy soundtracks, and maybe even some bossa nova, when it feels right.

Avatar 8:25pm Julie P.:

Hey Gina - I dated a singing drummer and married another one!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:26pm Gina Bacon:

Hahaha! My first husband was a drummer...who sometimes sang.
  8:26pm Ken Blue Mold:

Gina, I'm a singing drummer too. Except I can't carry a tune with a forklift.
Avatar 8:27pm bigplanetnoise:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:27pm Gina Bacon:

Well, I guess they keep you low in the mix, Ken Blue Mold!
Avatar 8:27pm bigplanetnoise:

I miss the days when drummers stood up when they played.
Avatar 8:28pm bigplanetnoise:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:29pm Uncle Michael:

Pete Rivera, every week.
Avatar 8:29pm Julie P.:

That was when you didn't have as much foot action to deal with. Then people went to double bass drums and you had to sit to get more oomph out of the kick.
Avatar 8:30pm bigplanetnoise:

McCoys' drummer was a 'stander'.
Avatar 8:31pm Julie P.:

I do agree that stand up drummers looked pretty cool!
Avatar 8:31pm bigplanetnoise:

I'm still unsure how I feel about the whole double-kick thing...
Avatar 8:32pm Julie P.:

Drummers gotta compete in the mix, after all!
Avatar 8:33pm bigplanetnoise:

Uncle Mike - did Pete Rivera stand?
Avatar 8:33pm AlexClarkCaprio:

Dinner is ready
And I had a 45 of this Litter song, I think it was a Sundazed RSD release
Avatar 8:33pm bigplanetnoise:

Now that's a healthy dinner right there.
Avatar 8:34pm Mailman Tom:

I never heard this cover version of the Who's song before. I was a huge fan of the Who back in the day!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:34pm Gina Bacon:

Nice, Alex!
Avatar 8:35pm bigplanetnoise:

Funny you should say that, Mailman... I've been on a kick lately. I never really thought that would happen, because I thought I had OD'd on them so very long.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:35pm Uncle Michael:

He didn't stand. He's my favorite singing drummer after Levon.
  8:35pm Eargasm!:

Good evening everyone! Great show so far as usual!
Avatar 8:36pm bigplanetnoise:

Hey Eargasm! There you are!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:36pm Gina Bacon:

Thanks, Eargasm!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:36pm Uncle Michael:

I keep trying to OD on the Who but apparently I have the constitution of an ox.
  8:36pm Eargasm!:

The video of the Swingin' Machine on YouTube is flippin' amazing!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:36pm Gina Bacon:

I think Levon's my favorite.
Avatar 8:37pm bigplanetnoise:

Uncle Mike - hahahaha!
Avatar 8:37pm bigplanetnoise:

I guess I'm going with Dave Clark.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:38pm Gina Bacon:

  8:38pm CC:

Being in love can really overturn some'one's general perspective on reality..!..hehehe...:)O(:
Avatar 8:38pm Snayle:

Seeds and DC5 Every week ! YAY
  8:38pm Eargasm!:

Those early sides with Ringo singing are killer Beatles records.
Avatar 8:38pm Julie P.:

Dave Clark was pretty manic on the skins, wasn't he?
Avatar 8:38pm bigplanetnoise:

Eargasm - did they just have the one 45? That's all I have.
  8:39pm Eargasm!:

It's all Ive ever seen, BPN.
Avatar 8:39pm bigplanetnoise:

Just listen to Sky - he's TORTURED on this record!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:39pm Gina Bacon:

True, Eargasm. I ❤️ Ringo, too.
  8:40pm Eargasm!:

Have you seen their video for the flip?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:40pm Gaylord Fields:

Good one, Bob! No one can claim that DC's singing was worse than his drumming! However, for me, distant second and third go to Chris Curtis and Dave Munden.
Avatar 8:41pm bigplanetnoise:

Hey Gaylord! Wow - I forgot about Chris Curtis! Yeah - that's right up there!!!
Avatar 8:41pm Mailman Tom:

Jimi Hendrix did a sizzling cover of this Dylan song!
Avatar 8:42pm bigplanetnoise:

I'm not sure I knew that Dave Munden sang!
  8:42pm Eargasm!:

My vote for drummer /singer goes to Dick Dodd and those incomparable Standells singles!
  8:42pm CC:

It's like the first time she bent down to tie your shoe...etc...:)O(:
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:43pm Gaylord Fields:

Indubitably, Bob! And throw in Anne (Honey) Lantree as long as we're talking about Brit singing drummers.
Avatar 8:43pm bigplanetnoise:

Mailman - he sure did! There's a special story for me about this particular record though....
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:43pm Gina Bacon:

Hi Gaylord!
Avatar 8:43pm bigplanetnoise:

Yeah - you guys are killing it with the singing drummers! Dick Dodd and Honey!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:43pm Gaylord Fields:

Gina! Always a pleasure to hear what you and Bob throw down!
Avatar 8:44pm Julie P.:

Johnny Winter sounding a lot like Dylan here.
Avatar 8:45pm bigplanetnoise:

Yeah, I'll say, Julie!
  8:46pm Doug Schulkind:

The Winter of our content.
Avatar 8:46pm AlexClarkCaprio:

Could never get down with Dylan. I love Phil Ochs though if that counts for anything
  8:46pm CC:

Too bad Billy Cobham never wailed that much...?...:)0(:
Avatar 8:48pm Snayle:

I'm with you Alex...
Avatar 8:48pm AlexClarkCaprio:

Hey Snayle
  8:50pm CC:

I always liked that pressed rat and warthog song...hehehe...:)0(:
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:50pm Uncle Michael:

Avatar 8:50pm bigplanetnoise:

Avatar 8:50pm Mailman Tom:

Avatar 8:50pm Snayle:

That's classic ! If only it was the other way 'round! (oh I didn't just say say that... did I ?) :O
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:51pm Glynis GirlGroupGirl:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:13pm Gina Bacon:

Hello, pacific standard simon!
  9:14pm Tim from LH:

Speaking of Derv Gordon and The Equals, i saw him at Monty Hall at WFMU 2 years ago. Fantastic show!
  9:14pm CC:

The song Yes It Is...has got to be the best Beatles harmonies ever... I swear to Buddha..!..:)0(:
Avatar 9:15pm Julie P.:

Six hours, YES!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:15pm Gaylord Fields:

Bob, I see Discogs has a few for sale, mostly condition-challenged. (Also, post-hit Chubby Checker is great Chubby Checker.)
Avatar 9:15pm bigplanetnoise:

Hey pacific standard simon! Welcome!!!
Avatar 9:17pm bigplanetnoise:

Yeah - I just saw those, Gaylord. The Northern guys are on it, so they're far and few between in decent condition.
Avatar 9:17pm bigplanetnoise:

Julie - in theory, I LOVE the idea of a 6-hour show!
Avatar 9:18pm coelacanth∅:

i somehow managed to hear John Lennon's version of rip it up first. still at least tied for my favorite.
Avatar 9:18pm Julie P.:

Things usually look more attractive in theory. It's in the execution that matters get ugly! ;)
  9:19pm Jay S.:

Very rare Zombies - love it!
  9:19pm Eargasm!:

Remember the 6 hour marathon we did one night, BPN?
  9:19pm Eargasm!:

Avatar 9:19pm bigplanetnoise:

That's interesting, coelacanth∅ - I never woulda thought of that!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:20pm pacific standard simon:

You two play my favorite old bands of all time. Not the ONLY bands I love, but definitely my comfort food.
Avatar 9:20pm bigplanetnoise:

I do indeed, Eargasm - that was a lot of work!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:20pm Gina Bacon:

That was my first night on the air, eargasm!
  9:21pm Eargasm!:

Too much work!!
Avatar 9:21pm bigplanetnoise:

Thank you, pacific standard simon! That means a lot!!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:21pm Gina Bacon:

So many records flying around!!
Avatar 9:22pm bigplanetnoise:

Six hours of 7" singles. Whew.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:22pm Gaylord Fields:

The frustrating thing about the Northern Soul collectors is that I'm always interested in the side of the record they ain't. Someday I'll invent a laser 45 splitter and solve this age-old problem.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:22pm Gina Bacon:

Comfort food is great, pacific standard time!
Avatar 9:23pm Julie P.:

Flying records - sounds like fun! I think I recall three and four hour shifts in my early radio days. The marathons came later in TV doing telethon production for 12 hours straight.
Avatar 9:23pm bigplanetnoise:

I'm with you, Gaylord!
Avatar 9:23pm Julie P.:

Gaylord Fields, they are a strange breed, aren't they?
Avatar 9:23pm coelacanth∅:

bpn i always check out the source and at least 90% of the time i end up liking the original the best
but then, you never forget your first do you.

This Monotones record is so great on every level. I think it's the only killer Hickory side that's eluded me.
Avatar 9:25pm bigplanetnoise:

That's true, coelacanth∅.
  9:27pm Jay S.:

Very DC5-ish here
Avatar 9:27pm GregRnNashville:

Groovin' as always...
Avatar 9:28pm bigplanetnoise:

Hey Greg - welcome!!
Avatar 9:28pm Julie P.:

I've never heard this version of "Here Comes My Baby"!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:28pm pacific standard simon:

Wow, a crate diggers treasure, that Mickey Finn 45.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:28pm Gina Bacon:

Hi Greg!
Avatar 9:29pm GregRnNashville:

hi ya'll
Avatar 9:29pm bigplanetnoise:

Cat wrote this, Julie!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:29pm Gaylord Fields:

@Julie P.: Let's just say the mysterious ways of the Northern Soul DJ/collector can sometimes be opaque to an outsider like me.
Avatar 9:29pm bigplanetnoise:

pacific standard simon - it's a killer!!!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:30pm pacific standard simon:

Cat Stevens version is so much better than the hit version.
Avatar 9:30pm Julie P.:

I only remember hearing the Tremeloes version. I must have been distracted regarding Cat's version . . .
  9:30pm Tim from LH:

This is good but I’ll take The Tremelos.
Avatar 9:31pm Julie P.:

pacific, I agree! I like Cat's version better too!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:31pm Gaylord Fields:

@pacific standard simon: And after I just said such nice things about singing drummer Dave Munden upthread.
Avatar 9:31pm bigplanetnoise:

Hahahaha! I love 'em both!!!! Tremeloes every week!
Avatar 9:31pm Julie P.:

Sorry, Gaylord!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:32pm Uncle Michael:

Gaylord, do I count as a singing drummer?
Avatar 9:33pm Julie P.:

Ahhhhhh! Black is Black!!!!
Avatar 9:33pm Julie P.:

And sitar version! I'm falling back in time!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:33pm pacific standard simon:

I found this Yardbirds LP in a Goodwill bin in 1972 -- my first.
  9:33pm Jay S.:

Yes, Tremeloes every week, please!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:34pm Gina Bacon:

Not your average Black is Black!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:34pm Gaylord Fields:

@Julie P.: It's not like I lose sleep over it, but thanks for caring.
  9:34pm Jay S.:

This was a 45...amazing
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:35pm Gaylord Fields:

@Uncle Michael: You tick every box!
Avatar 9:35pm bigplanetnoise:

It was!!!!
Avatar 9:35pm Julie P.:

Sounds like the Tijuana Brass are doing the backing!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:37pm Uncle Michael:

Is this the best Walker Brothers track, or just my favorite?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:37pm Gina Bacon:

I love the horn/sitar combo sound!
Avatar 9:37pm bigplanetnoise:

Whew - Uncle Mike - it's right up there, for sure. Man.
  9:37pm Jay S.:

This is a great one, that's for sure
Avatar 9:38pm bigplanetnoise:

This mono mix has never been reissued as far as I know.
Avatar 9:38pm GregRnNashville:

this mix "swirls"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:38pm Uncle Michael:

A freakin' b-side. The mono sounds grand.
Avatar 9:39pm bigplanetnoise:

Styrene 45, too.
Avatar 9:39pm Julie P.:

Uncle Michael, it has that same lovely sweeping sound as "The Sun Ain't Gonna Shine Any More" without being a copy of that song. Just gorgeous.
  9:39pm CC:

It's always nice to have someone to spend the night with...etc...:)0(:
Avatar 9:39pm GregRnNashville:

a thing of beauty
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:41pm Uncle Michael:

After the Lights Go Out was written by one of Scott's pre-Walkers collaborators.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:42pm Uncle Michael:

Big Jim, as opposed to Little Jim (Page)
Avatar 9:43pm bigplanetnoise:

Sonny every week!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:43pm Uncle Michael:

Here's a Jim Sullivan treat for after BPN.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:44pm Gina Bacon:

Thanks, Uncle Michael.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:44pm Gina Bacon:

Sonny is one complicated dude.
Avatar 9:46pm bigplanetnoise:

How many syllables in "sight"?????
  9:47pm Eargasm!:

He took the caveman look much more seriously than The Strangeloves!
Avatar 9:47pm Julie P.:

Bob. I count at least twelve syllables!
Avatar 9:47pm bigplanetnoise:

I need a fur vest.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:47pm pacific standard simon:

'And now I wonder/what my laundry's doing tonight?!'
Avatar 9:47pm GregRnNashville:

I always think of Sonny as the bubblegum version of Lee Hazlewood :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:48pm Gaylord Fields:

I dunno, Bob, but Sonny never sings the same note twice on any of those syllables.
  9:48pm CC:

Some people might say that Cher was just too easy..?..:)0(:
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:48pm Gina Bacon:

Hahaha Greg! I can see why.
Avatar 9:49pm bigplanetnoise:

Gina's right - he was complicated. I love his production work. It's weird - mostly like a lo-fi Spector production. But it's really charming. In it's own way. Am I going on too long about this?
Avatar 9:49pm GregRnNashville:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:50pm Gina Bacon:

All of the above, bigplanetnoise!
Avatar 9:50pm Julie P.:

Nope, Bob! Sonny was definitely a lot more than "I Got You Babe" for sure!
  9:50pm Eargasm!:

and somewhere in a producers booth in 1967 two engineers looked in nodding approval to the groovy sounds that were going to strike a chord in the youth of the day.....
  9:50pm Jay S.:

I agree, Bob...Sonny's productions are always interesting
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:51pm nostrangerer:

Interesting comment Uncle Michael regarding your favorite Walker Bros. track. I really really enjoyed your Scott Walker tribute show. I don't know if I could pick a single track.
Avatar 9:51pm AlexClarkCaprio:

"Painted Bird" is my favorite track from the first Fallen Angels LP
  9:51pm CC:

Allman and Woman was well produced...imho...:)0(:
Avatar 9:52pm bigplanetnoise:

I had the privilege of going through many of the early S&C multitracks. Pretty amazing what he did with three tracks. Okay - I'm done now.
Avatar 9:53pm bigplanetnoise:

Alex - that's a great track.
  9:53pm Eargasm!:

I love first Fallen Angels album. When I moved to Nashville in 2004 you could still buy sealed original copies of it for $12. I bought a crapload of them.
  9:53pm Eargasm!:

At the Lawrence Brothers store
Avatar 9:53pm bigplanetnoise:

Is it okay if we go a little long tonight?
Avatar 9:53pm bigplanetnoise:

I have more to say, dammit!
  9:54pm Eargasm!:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:54pm pacific standard simon:

The thing I loved about Sonny Bono arrangements was his obsession with the oboe. Oboe rules!
  9:54pm Jay S.:

This is so, so Boettcher
Avatar 9:54pm Snayle:

Please go ALL NIGHT LONG !
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:54pm Gina Bacon:

Do they have a choice, Bob?
Avatar 9:54pm Julie P.:

Yes, please run over! I'm swooning to this Association track!
Avatar 9:55pm bigplanetnoise:

Jay - he's all over this record!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:55pm Uncle Michael:

thank you, nostranger!
  9:56pm Eargasm!:

This was another killer show, Bob and Gina!
Avatar 9:56pm bigplanetnoise:

Alex - please page Liz for me.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:56pm Uncle Michael:

My introduction to Curt Boettcher was via the Goldebriars. Think about that.
Avatar 9:56pm bigplanetnoise:

I ain't done yet, Eargasm!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:57pm nostrangerer:

OK, didn't expect Beefheart!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:57pm Uncle Michael:

  9:57pm CC:

if Cher would have toured with Gregg Allman before he died they could have made a billion bucks...:)0(:
Avatar 9:57pm bigplanetnoise:

I'm not much of a fan, Uncle Mike. Of the GB's.
Avatar 9:57pm bigplanetnoise:

That's true, CC.
Avatar 9:57pm AlexClarkCaprio:

Oh for the Captain?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:58pm Uncle Michael:

That's my point, Bob. I mean "No More Bomb"? Come on...
Avatar 9:58pm bigplanetnoise:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:58pm Gina Bacon:

I think of Liz when we play Beefheart, too.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:58pm Gaylord Fields:

Thanks for another corker of a show, Gina & Bob! (Bob, you now have 6 days, 22 hours to write that Sonny Bono manifesto. We'll be waiting.)
Avatar 9:59pm bigplanetnoise:

Right, Uncle Mike.
Avatar 9:59pm bigplanetnoise:

Gaylord - hahahaha! I'm on it!
Avatar 10:00pm AlexClarkCaprio:

Gina that made Liz laugh and she went "that's hilarious"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:00pm Uncle Michael:

Write a Mike Love manifesto.
Avatar 10:00pm Julie P.:

I'll be checking thrift stores for that fur vest, Bob! What size and what color (fake) fur? LOL
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:00pm Gina Bacon:

Avatar 10:01pm bigplanetnoise:

I'll fit into any size, any color, Julie!
  10:01pm CC:

keep doing it up right BPN..!..Cheerz!!!!...:)0(:
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:01pm Gaylord Fields:

And I'll get your Palm Springs mayoral campaign posters printed, Bob.
Avatar 10:01pm Julie P.:

Sigh . . . two hours goes by so fast on Monday night.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:02pm Uncle Michael:

Wonderful show, you two. Thank you.
Avatar 10:02pm Julie P.:

Gaylord, ROTFL!!
Avatar 10:02pm bigplanetnoise:

I'm starting on my pageboy as of right now.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:02pm Gina Bacon:

I agree, Julie. Way too fast.
Avatar 10:02pm bigplanetnoise:
