This is where all of culture and all of time are collapsed into one seductive portal and viewed through the panoramic lens of the exotic. Come and embark on an armchair-travel virtual-voyage to the heart of timeless darkness and beyond; embrace the numinous monolith of the exotic immensity. Let us find that place where hybridization meets its destiny as pure fantasy. Let us become observers observing those others who are ourselves. You wear your mask and I'll wear mine.

Some bitchin' vibrato here...

Hi Chresti, Hi Rev!

The Atlantics have such a great sound - wonder if Sven Libaek is on the controls for this one, my guess is yes

Wondefully surreal art this week Flash, like an Eastern inflected Matisse
Avatar 7:06pm Flash Strap:

Hi Arthur! it's a very nice Max Ernst from 1967 approximating an earlier work from the late 30s
Avatar 7:07pm Flash Strap:

the original was destroyed as degenerate art!

I've never seen any of the drummers credited, so your guess is as good as mine, and i'd say it's not bad
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:13pm Michael 98145:

Love me some Max Ernst. Thanks.

Avatar 7:23pm Flash Strap:

@Rev: not so uncommon as all that, but possibly the happiest. Though as ever – in all things – Leonora Carrington gives him a run for the title
Avatar 7:23pm Little Danny:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:23pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Germans occupied Mexico briefly? ngh will know precisely...Anyhow - the OomPa got in there!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:24pm Michael 98145:

Les rythmes sauvages!!
Avatar 7:25pm Flash Strap:

I think the oompa comes from Dutch settlements in Southern Texas and around that area
Avatar 7:26pm Little Danny:

RRN63: And henceforth there shall be accordion!
Avatar 7:26pm Flash Strap:

Jungle Flute is such a good composition, never heard a bad version!
Avatar 7:27pm Little Danny:

Flash: German and to some degree Czech settlers
Avatar 7:27pm northguineahills:

@Franco: I need my glasses, I first thought you typed, "let's polka around the cactus owl!".

Have you ever bought raw nopales w/o the spines removed? It's a PIA to remove them all, and even w/ gloves, you'll definitely at least get the small hair sized ones stuck in you (which is worse then the large, thick, long ones).
Avatar 7:27pm Flash Strap:

ah yes
Avatar 7:27pm Flash Strap:

@NGH: love that stuff
Avatar 7:28pm Franco Twinkie:

Last night we watched The Sir Douglas Quintet on Playboy after Dark. Chicano hippie oompa de Tejas!

Avatar 7:38pm junglepete:

Permission to come aboard, admiral?
Avatar 7:38pm Little Danny:

re: Buddy Holly. I like the cut of your jib RRN63. "Heartbeat" springs to mind
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:38pm Michael 98145:

@Franco T, we're a fan of those Cardenas Markets ... www.cardenasmarkets.com...
Avatar 7:39pm Franco Twinkie:

My dad was a champ at picking, cleaning and canning nopales. We had them year round back in the day when they were strictly seasonal.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:41pm chresti:

Mildly offensive exotic percussion
Avatar 7:42pm geezerette:

Was driving with a Mexican friend towards Zacatecas & passed a roadside stand advertising tunas. Boy was I confused. So far inland!
Never heard prickly pears called that before. :::::)
Avatar 7:43pm Little Danny:

I should take a picture of the beds of prickly pear that line the front of our house. They're monsters.
Avatar 7:44pm Flash Strap:

Come aboard Jungle Pete! oh how grand my man
Avatar 7:44pm geezerette:

Yep, sounds like a love ritual to me!
Avatar 7:45pm Franco Twinkie:

Michael, do the have comida preperada? We're going out to Joshua Tree next week and it seems like there mostly in the I.E. and high desert. We like to cook out there , but it's nice to take stuff already made.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:45pm Michael 98145:

@gz'ette, that would've confused me, too.

not to mention what Candians mean by "A Caesar" ...
Avatar 7:45pm Flash Strap:

Hello Geezerette!
Avatar 7:45pm Little Danny:

Flash: what album were those liner notes from? I partially missed it...

Ah, thanks
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:46pm Michael 98145:

@Franco T, i think they should have some things for you. We were just down in the Valley -- not for Coachella, however!
Avatar 7:47pm Flash Strap:

We used to live in Mexico and all this cactus talk is making me terribly nostalgic
Avatar 7:47pm geezerette:

Michael,....uh...what DO they mean? (Hope I don't regret asking.)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:47pm Michael 98145:

when we were there, all the joshua trees were in bloom ...

Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:49pm chresti:

Not offensive at all
Avatar 7:49pm Flash Strap:

Hey TDK!
Avatar 7:50pm geezerette:

We saw those too. First time we've ever seen them bloom! Looked like each arm was holding an ice cream cone, triple scoops.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:51pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Drum solos...holding attention. This is a thing.
Avatar 7:51pm Flash Strap:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:51pm Michael 98145:

@gz'ette, yes! some say they smell slightly like mushroom, but i didn't detect that.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:52pm Michael 98145:

enjoying all this. thanks!
Avatar 7:52pm Franco Twinkie:

Did either of you hike out to the dam?

We're pretty proud of them!
Avatar 7:55pm geezerette:

Franco, no, how was that?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:56pm Michael 98145:

@Franco, not this trip. Last time we saw wild goats there.

Have a fun drive. The worst part is probably just getting thru Riverside.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:57pm Michael 98145:

Wow. That is some -serious- cactus, Little D !
Avatar 7:57pm geezerette:

Danny, fantastic! Do you harvest the fruit? I really like them, despite the seeds. You guys have enough to make jam.
Avatar 7:59pm Flash Strap:

in Mexico we used to hike out to a certain spot where we could pick garambuyo berries, has anybody every tried those? they were like delicious little blueberries
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:59pm passiflora:

Avatar 7:59pm Flash Strap:

Hi passiflora! me too, this track is so lovely
Avatar 7:59pm Franco Twinkie:

I was just wondering about the level after this really wet season. The drive doesn't bug me at all. it's nothing compared to driving to UCLA.

Danny! That is amazing. August Bloom?
Avatar 8:00pm hyde:

@LD whoa, that is a lot of cactus
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:01pm Michael 98145:

thanks, DJ and friends. gotta go off-wire ..
Avatar 8:01pm junglepete:

that looks like blueberries attached to carambola!
Avatar 8:04pm Flash Strap:

@Franco: i lived in Guanajuato state, between San Miguel De Allende and Dolores
Avatar 8:04pm Little Danny:

Geez: we don't mess with 'em too much, but we have friends who make juice from them and we invariably wind up with some of it. It is really delicious.
Avatar 8:05pm Little Danny:

@Franco: Yes, late summer if I recall correctly...
Avatar 8:05pm geezerette:

Oh wow! Those berries are beautiful.
Avatar 8:05pm Franco Twinkie:

I want those cactus berries to make a pie.
Avatar 8:06pm coelacanth∅:

Franco i'm trying! i'm waiting for my laundry to be dry, which i thought would be c.7.30.
Avatar 8:06pm Flash Strap:

they have a very purple juice, like pomegranate or purple-fleshed dragon fruit. delicious
Avatar 8:08pm Little Danny:

@chresti: One of our cat likes to get in them he's trying to avoid us wrangling him inside. He's fearless. Comes in covered in spines all the time, seemingly oblivious
Avatar 8:08pm geezerette:

Evan, I've been in that part of the country. What a beautiful place to live!
  8:08pm Coo Coo Byrd:

Nice song. Big sounds.
Avatar 8:08pm Little Danny:

much agreed, LD
Avatar 8:09pm Flash Strap:

hi coo coo byrd!
Avatar 8:10pm Franco Twinkie:

Danny, Yup. A summer treat when you're harvesting the young paddles when they are tender, I could tell yours were mostly pencas - planks as we would call them. It's the little guys you want.

very crazy idea this record: exotica tunes + bird sounds, ok yes

harpsichord pop + rain sounds, very good and normal

BUT, all that together on one record? crazy
Avatar 8:29pm Flash Strap:

Hi Melinda! welcome aboard!

I couldn't help it, I ran out and got some nopales. I mean what else could we possibly have for dinner tonight?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:43pm melinda:

I'm having split pea soup and teff porridge for dinner. Had the root canal today and things are still sore, soft foods it is.
Avatar 8:43pm Little Danny:

That's awesome, Franco. I'm now definitely in a kinda cactus mood myself
Avatar 8:44pm Little Danny:

What sort of dish are you gonna make, Franco?

Love a nopales omelette
Avatar 8:46pm Flash Strap:

Oooh, feel better Melinda!
Avatar 8:46pm Flash Strap:

this really is one of the very best psychedelic 60s records, imo
Avatar 8:46pm Flash Strap:

very strange vocals as well
Avatar 8:48pm Little Danny:

That's good to hear, Flash. Been curious about this LP for a while.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:49pm melinda:

@Flash thanks, should get better in a few days.
Avatar 8:49pm Flash Strap:

i have a few more cuts sprinkled in here. it's 100% tho, whole thing's full of revelations
Avatar 8:52pm TDK60:

..never even heard Harumi. Verve Forecast, I think Blues Project was on that. Tim Hardin?
Avatar 8:52pm Flash Strap:

this record is so cool as well, for so long i had only heard Bo Hansson's solo stuff but Hansson&Karlsson is often better
Avatar 8:53pm junglepete:

This is damn dynamite.

Avatar 9:03pm Little Danny:

Whoa, Franco, amazing
Avatar 9:04pm northguineahills:

My wife has my igneous molcajete. I should of brought it as I use it more then her.
Avatar 9:04pm Flash Strap:

Yusef really flies on this track, something about it takes my breath away honestly
Avatar 9:06pm northguineahills:

Although I only have corn tortillas (I have a cast iron tortilla maker/fryer), I prefer the wheat, as the sweeter texture works well against the heat/sourness/vinegar of the salsas....
Avatar 9:08pm Little Danny:

Yusef in his prime East-West period. Agreed, GREAT track.
Avatar 9:08pm Franco Twinkie:

Ngh, Tu sabes!
Avatar 9:09pm northguineahills:

Fascinating, about that Harumi disc ; "The album was recorded sometime between 1967 and 1968 in New York. Very little is known about the recording of the album aside from what is on the sleeve of the record. Key personnel such as backing musicians are absent from the album credits."

Avatar 9:39pm TDK60:

I think Stan Getz was my entryway into jazz via my symphonic HS band friends....
Avatar 9:50pm northguineahills:

(actually, via his samba albums)
Avatar 9:51pm Flash Strap:

yeah those are massive entry-albums to jazz, and they're really fuckin great imo
Avatar 9:53pm Flash Strap:

Avatar 9:53pm northguineahills:

Yeah, those are awesome, (still listen to them), then I discovered Bill Evans, and what a rabbit hole I fell into and have to surface from!
Avatar 9:54pm Little Danny:

Oh, nice. Trish Keenan (RIP) put "What a Day for Me" on an old mix
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:55pm Michael 98145:

Thank you for the journey on our time machine.

BTW, does anyone know what that photo was on the drummer stream email for today?
Avatar 9:56pm Little Danny:

Thanks Evan! Another show of multitudes
Avatar 9:56pm TDK60:

maybe Harumi had a band? but if those were session players, some may have been the same folks who played behind Janis Ian, Tim Hardin, Bob Lind, Laura Nyro, etc. on Verve Forecast; maybe. Those vibes in the background sound familiar.
