Postwar atmospherica. High bop modernism and Afro-Latin sounds, twilight exotica and soundtrack moods, soul stompers and weepers, hypnotic R&B and blues, mystical '60s pop, lonely country, lonelier rock 'n' roll, instrumental weirdness, electronic creaking. Bringing worlds beyond into the worlds at hand.

Listener comments!

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:56pm Matt from New Orleans:

Hey Danny. Can’t seem to make enough time to listen to all the music I want to listen to. There just seems to be an ever increasing list of mixes on mixcloud and also keep finding new shows on WFMU too.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:58pm chresti:

Hello! !
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:02pm Uncle Michael:

This is such a great record.
Avatar 10:02pm Franco Twinkie:

This is the sound of to much Ganja Syrup.
Avatar 10:02pm TDK60:

Hello. Can't believe I'm up after 10 PM. // Matt in N.O., there's too much music, this is true.
Avatar 10:02pm Little Danny:

H'ain't that the truth, Matt. Hello good people.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:03pm coelacanth∅:

greetings Danny and All
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:03pm doctorjazz:

Hey Danny and all you out there
Avatar 10:04pm Little Danny:

This goes out in honor of JtotheK's avatar:

Avatar 10:05pm TDK60:

I'd recommend to a lot of bands they should throw in the towel and just collect stamps instead, but then they'd think I was a killjoy.
Avatar 10:06pm Little Danny:

@UM: There were also at least 4 other iterations of it, including these two!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:06pm Matt from New Orleans:

I can’t even begin to try to sort through bandcamp. I rely on others to help guide me.
Avatar 10:11pm TDK60:

The singer of Pere Ubu had a song about there being too many bands. Forget which album.
Avatar 10:13pm northguineahills:

101 Strings already auto-clickied!
Avatar 10:14pm still b/p:

This was cool...Spanish Guitar. Cool sound. Cool air to it. Cool as a Blue Flame.
Avatar 10:17pm Little Danny:

Thanks all! A little hectic here with some unseen tech issues, but it's all good now
Avatar 10:18pm northguineahills:

Ok, I'm losing it, I'm making pumpernickel toad in the hole, bruschetta style....
Avatar 10:19pm Franco Twinkie:

The Easter bunny is chewing thru the transmission cables.
Avatar 10:20pm Little Danny:

OMG NGH. What even is that? I demand pictures
Avatar 10:22pm TDK60:

Now I know there *is* Carnatic jazz. T.K. Ramamoorthy, keep your band together, no need to pack it up.
Avatar 10:22pm Little Danny:

Glad you dug it, still b/p. It's from NC. Flash Strap country
Avatar 10:23pm Little Danny:

TDK: I honestly agree with you. A lot of musicians should really just stop already.
Avatar 10:24pm still b/p:

There was a rabbit for a while were I used to work. Audio cables, video cables...started to become the land of gnawed.
Avatar 10:25pm Franco Twinkie:

If their not screwing there chewing.
Avatar 10:27pm Little Danny:

Nicely done, still b/p
Avatar 10:28pm northguineahills:

Not sure yet, just garlic, onions, tomatoes, chilies on pumpernickel bread, w/ a whole in the middle to fry an egg (olive oil on the bottom, butter on top).
Avatar 10:29pm Little Danny:

That sounds delicious.
Avatar 10:30pm TDK60:

Here's one orchestra that should always be employed, around *this* solar system at least.
Avatar 10:31pm Franco Twinkie:

NGH, So, is this a make it at home variant on the bread bowl full of cream soup kind of thing?
Avatar 10:31pm Little Danny:

Excuse me while I take this 7 minute track to go use the facilities
Avatar 10:31pm northguineahills:

oh, and grated padana cheese....
Avatar 10:31pm Franco Twinkie:

I'll use it to put my truck away.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:33pm Matt from New Orleans:

I never saw Sun Ra but I’ve seen the arkestra a bunch
Avatar 10:33pm northguineahills:

not a soup just a fried egg in the middle of the toast, that is fried together (I cut a hole in it the bread, first).
Avatar 10:34pm Little Danny:

Me too, Matt
Avatar 10:35pm Little Danny:

That is, I never saw 'em with Le Sun Ra at the helm
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:36pm chresti:

genius, ngh
Avatar 10:37pm Franco Twinkie:

Okay, a one eyed sailor type thing.
Avatar 10:37pm still b/p:

Pumpernickel was never in my childhood home, and in my world was only a typically comic reference in entertainments of the period, but I loves me some pumpernickel now....for any kind of sandwich or toast treatment. ("Mama don't allow no pumpernickerl round here...Mama don't allow no pumpernickel round here..")
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:37pm doctorjazz:

Great Sun Ra track (have this somewhere)
Avatar 10:38pm TDK60:

.."toad in a hole" my mom called it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:38pm chresti:

haha TDK60
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:40pm doctorjazz:

Saw the Arkestra with Sun Ra many times, what a fun show! For a while, they played rock clubs in Downtown NYC.
Avatar 10:44pm TDK60:

..saw post-Ra Ark twice. happy, therapeutic..
Avatar 10:45pm northguineahills:

I've only seen the Archestra post-Sun Ra. Still, amazing!
  10:45pm dano59:

I think Arthur Lyman did the bird calls on Denny's first Exotica record; he's also based in Hawaii (big fan)
  10:46pm Dean:

Buddy of mine was a pallbearer at Sun Ra's funeral.
Avatar 10:48pm Franco Twinkie:

Doc, this was the early 80's? L.A. too! I only saw him once, Chresti a few times.
Avatar 10:50pm Little Danny:

Oh man, that's so awesome doc.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:51pm doctorjazz:

That would have been the 80s, don't remember how early Franco. But they played around the East Village quite a bit, along with some Jazz venues.
Avatar 10:51pm Little Danny:

I really need to sort out those bird call credits, dano! Also the frogs
Avatar 10:52pm Little Danny:

It's going to get VERY HEAVY here for a moment
Avatar 10:53pm Franco Twinkie:

Chresti saw him at The Palomino, which was a shit kicking cowboy club in North Hollywood, twice!
  10:53pm dano59:

Per Matt's problem and all of ours: I can handle having a few favorite exotica artists but have yet to go down the rabbit hole of Les Baxter, 101 STRINGS, et al. I also just discovered the Continental Subway show this week ...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:54pm Matt from New Orleans:

Her name seems to be an intentional oxymoron
Avatar 10:55pm Little Danny:

It's a pretty great name tho
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:56pm coelacanth∅:

who are you and what have you done with little Danny?!
  10:57pm dano59:

Plus I have stuff from the last 3 Record Store Days I need to play and decide what I love
Avatar 10:57pm Little Danny:

  10:57pm Dean:

Sun Ra played frequently in these parts...when I wasn't here.

The "VERY HEAVY" bit reminds me that I thought there ought to be a band called Massive Feather (a la Zeppelin, Butterfly). Not so, to my knowledge, but there was a Heavy Feather in the early '70s. They sound like America, Guess Who...very pop, not heavy at all.
Avatar 10:58pm Franco Twinkie:

I saw him at this place called Myrons Ballroom, an old dance hall downtown. One of the Arkestra flew across the ballroom on a wire, just like Tinker Bell at Disney Land.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:58pm doctorjazz:

Forget it, no time to listen to all the FMU shows I like (and there are streams I haven't checked out yet), not to mention incoming albums piling up in the New Arrivals area. And, of course, there's family, work, the rest of the world...hopeless!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:58pm chresti:

Yay! Chaotica!
Avatar 10:58pm Little Danny:

Man, Massive Feather really does sound like an actual band
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:59pm coelacanth∅:

i was in the kitchen and if there was an explanation i missed it.
but i like the "very heavy"!
Avatar 10:59pm TDK60:

this an odd ditty; can happen on wfmu.
  11:00pm dano59:

My, how in-flight music has changed ...
Avatar 11:00pm Little Danny:

@chresti: first heard c/o Charlie Lewis years ago! (He used a Recchion track for some of his talkover music.)
  11:00pm Dean:

Thanks to Transparency, Sun Ra at Myron's is available: https://www.discogs.com/Sun-Ra-Arkestra-Live-At-Myrons-Ballroom/release/2640330

I have a few of their releases, including Club Lingerie, but not that one.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:00pm coelacanth∅:

"music beyond airports"
Avatar 11:01pm Franco Twinkie:

Tom sold me an old Hammond organ he used to make a lot of his crazy noised with.
  11:02pm Carmichael:

Heya Danny and music lovers.
Avatar 11:02pm Little Danny:

Jesus, Franco. Is there any cool musician in Los Angeles who hasn't talked to you? That's awesome.
Avatar 11:03pm TDK60:

..can't believe I'm up after 11. must be the charming guests...
Avatar 11:03pm Little Danny:

Carmichael! Hello hello hello
Avatar 11:04pm Little Danny:

@TDK: and you're doing a great thing!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:04pm coelacanth∅:

the first time i got a computer, c.2008? the friend that helped me set it up told me i need pandora and to demonstrate how to use it he made a Tom Recchion station...and i've liked everything i've heard from him -so i don't understand why i haven't dug deeper.
Avatar 11:04pm Franco Twinkie:

I've know Tom since we were youngsters.
Avatar 11:07pm Little Danny:

Wow, Franco. Do y'all ever see each other? I love his music so much
Avatar 11:07pm TDK60:

the kind of party where everybody is urbane, sexy, intelligent, sooooooo interesting, and just a bit high, and cool.
  11:11pm Carmichael:

I don’t know anyone...
Avatar 11:11pm Franco Twinkie:

Oh yeah, not every day, but often. In addition to a Hammond organ, he sold me a refrigerator that stopped working soon after I wrestled it into the kitchen.
Avatar 11:12pm northguineahills:

I randomly djed the same gig w/ Tom (he was in town to play live) a while back, I only knew a little a bit about him at the time, but he was a superb person.

Loved the Esquivel!

I might be going into a food coma in a bit (once the burning in my eyes goes away after rubbing them after cutting chilis). So, if I'm not back, thanks LD!.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:14pm coelacanth∅:

i can't tell if i'm hungry or not! i don't think i should be; but i want a toad in the hole
-pumpernickel stylee.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:16pm coelacanth∅:

testing testing ...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:19pm coelacanth∅:

weird. post disappeared for 4 minutes.
Avatar 11:21pm Franco Twinkie:

I made a stir fry with beet greens, tomatoes and bread cubes, so I should be starving just about now, but I keep fooling myself by eating a lot of Easter candy.
Avatar 11:21pm TDK60:

ahh, it's a full moon tonight, might explain my late night soiree.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:21pm doctorjazz:

This Knights 45 is nice, books for the hour.
  11:24pm Carmichael:

What a high lonesome whine here ...
Avatar 11:25pm TDK60:

..it is bright in the sky here in Manhattan. Can ya see it out there in California?
  11:26pm Carmichael:

Nope. It’s 80 degrees and I am bbq-ing.
  11:26pm dano59:

Twangin' like Mr. Edmunds
Avatar 11:30pm Franco Twinkie:

TDK, it hasn't risen yet, but very early this morning I went outside to piss in the front yard, and it was very bright.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:31pm chresti:

Yes, the moon and sky are very bright now, here
Avatar 11:33pm Franco Twinkie:

She's right. It is up!
  11:35pm Dean:

Yes, it has risen. To the SE. Shiny, but not full.
Avatar 11:40pm Franco Twinkie:

Other Words Other Sounds uses the same cheesy back drop of outer space on the cover as Destination Moon by the Ames Brothers. Some one wasn't doing there job I suspect to let that one get by.
  11:40pm Carmichael:

Ok, just went and looked. The moon is low in my SE sky.
Avatar 11:44pm Little Danny:

You're right, Franco! I love that
Avatar 11:44pm Franco Twinkie:

And I can't remember which, but on one they didn't even smooth out the wrinkles in the drop.
Avatar 11:47pm Franco Twinkie:

Travis Whammack on guitar?
Avatar 11:47pm still b/p:

These last few are hitting the spot. Would be great spins for a partyyyy.
  11:49pm Carmichael:

Man, I live original surf stuff. The Lively Ones are one of my favorites.
  11:49pm Carmichael:

Avatar 11:49pm Franco Twinkie:

This is on a comp put out on Romulon called The Surf Creature.
  11:51pm Carmichael:

This is how you learn electric guitar chords. Absolute schooling.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:52pm chresti:

Love this, thanks Danny!
  11:53pm Carmichael:

And I think every surf song has that Am G F E7 riff.
Avatar 11:53pm Little Danny:

I do too Carmichael. I really wanna do an all-surf special sometime
Avatar 11:57pm Franco Twinkie:

Awhile ago, Chresti, her son, and myself went to the Avalon Ballroom in San Francisco the night before Easter to see/hear this great bay area psychedelic/surf power trio called the Mermen with a full on light show behind them. I got sp stoned, that later that night I fell out of bed onto an end table.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:59pm coelacanth∅:

moon very bright and beautiful here, upstate-ish.
  11:59pm Carmichael:

Franco, seriously?? The Mermen are modern surf legends! Next time, call me.
Avatar 12:00am Franco Twinkie:

You're on, bro!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:01am coelacanth∅:

Thanks Danny! Stellar program!
take care - everyone
Avatar 12:02am Little Danny:
