This song reminds me of an old proverb. The porcupine who falls in love with an inflatable doll must rationalize that a platonic relationship can still be true love.

@Sem - back in the 80s, I used to listen to Vassar's radio station regularly. On Monday nights, there was Polka from 6-9 PM, then thrash/death metal from 9-12 PM. I think I'd call the transition point between shows "death polka".
Swag For Life Member 9:45am tadpoles:

@Brian, the only other track I've heard of from that album is All I Want for Christmas Is a Dukla Prague Away Kit. I think that must have had some radio play, probably starting on the John Peel show

Swag For Life Member 10:19am Tiago from Portugal:

Hi Joe, great show so far.
Avatar 10:20am Brian in UK:

Odd. The thing that struck me about seeing Mdou Moctor was that he hardly ever looked at the fretboard. Most guitarists spend more time looking at their axe than taking in the atmosphere.
Avatar 10:20am Sem:

...the fuzz is tough...what was Lee ingesting when he wrote these amazing lyrics?
Rhetorical question, 'natch.

The same could be said of the B-52's and the db's. Since they're proper nouns and not governed by the rules of standard written English, we'll let 'er slide.
  10:34am Brendan:

@Joe, maybe you could do some spoken word / industrial noise .
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:36am coelacanth∅:

ohhh...thanks Brian. i have it on a 12" single. i didn't know what i was buying!

Avatar 10:36am Dominick:

stereo 45 from 1963?
Avatar 10:36am Joe McG:

@Roberto: Absolutely. @Brendan: Had I known there would be loud drilling and sawing underneath me today, maybe I would have prepared something special.
Avatar 10:37am Roberto:

It's too bad Kenny G's Hour of Pain isn't on anymore. He could have just pointed the mic at the construction noise for the whole hour.
  10:38am Brendan:

@Joe your shows are always special!
Avatar 10:38am Brian in UK:

Joe, time for that Rush special. Oh noooo.
Avatar 10:38am Joe McG:

@Dominick: Just looked it up and it appears that my copy is a 1969 reissue. Guess they found a stereo master or rechanneled it?
Avatar 10:39am Joe McG:

@Brendan: Aww, flattery will get you everywhere.
Avatar 10:40am Roberto:

"I'm Gonna Make You Love Me" was used for a Toyota commercial or something in the '70s or '80s, I'm not exactly sure when. I just remember being confused by the sentence structure -- shouldn't it be "yes I am?"

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:51am coelacanth∅:

Domonick @10.36 they definitely *could have* issued a stereo 45 in 1963 if they thought it was important enough. (that's probably not the case with a chantay's 45 though)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:54am Hughie Considine:

Singing about listening to specific singers is always so evocative. Like when Roger Daltrey siings about playing T-Rex.

@Brian in UK: E Costello "The Purse", Various Artists "Hillbillies in Hell Vol. 8", and the Sun Records compilation, which was a little disappointing. Hillbillies in Hell is a great series.

@Brian: I like that! Definitely a tricksy show. @Mark: It's changed the way I hear the album a bit, for good or ill.

Mark, sorry missed it. Looks good. Living in the country there are no shops nearby. Hope to check out one this week. I am sure that it will not be sold out.

It's funny to see things in stores still there from last year, or the year before, that just didn't sell. Won't somebody take this off our hands? Why is the Shocking Blue singles collection being released AGAIN this year? Where is the exclusivity!!!
Avatar 11:50am Brian in UK:

@Mark, taking a trip up to Abergavenny hoping the weather is fine. If you should see a black dog running free, well you know that it's mine.
Think those are some lyrics from memory.

Despite the fact that there are so many American towns with UK names, the USA seems to have more evocative names.

Thanks for the non-taxing show today, Joe. I do regret to inform you that Therese played a Wreckless Eric track last night. Love that New Bin!

I think my favorite moment in that Aretha film comes during her performance of this song. The choir director breaks down weeping (as I almost did) at the beauty of Aretha's voice. Great show as always, Joe!
